Title: Question Regarding Band Name Changes
Post by: wood and iron on December 09, 2010, 06:31:13 PM
As something of an obsessive about a nice and clean iTunes library, I an frequently mired with grand philosophical questions that keep me up all night. The current one is this: when a band changes their name, what do you do? You can just keep the old music under the old name and the new music under the new name and that's that. However, when you want to find all of the music by the same artist at one time, it is tricky. You can change all of the music to be under the new name which is a good choice but seems to avoid history and the old music wasn't really released by that name. Changing the music to be under the old name seems unlikely to be an elegant solution.

Note: now, I realize there are all sorts of doodads and gimcracks that iTunes has in order to sort stuff. I'm more interested in the quandary of this rather than a practical solution.

Is this such a common phenomenon that it's really laying waste to your classification system?

As someone who obsesses over precise classification myself, I would only keep the old name for albums that were released under that name.

Me too.  Now that we've disposed of the quandary, do you want a suggestion for a practical solution?

That's not very nice.

This thread is a death knell for the FOT forum.

Sorry guys, my bad. It was fun while it lasted.

But seriously, that's not cool. I read this board as much chance as I get to keep up to date on FOTs and all things Best Show and don't contribute a whole lot because at times this place feels like the cool kids table and its hard to get noticed in a situation like that and also feel accepted.

But with comments like that, who needs places like this? I mean I get it, it's the internet and people are dicks all over, but this place thinks of itself as something different and I do too.

It was an admittedly stupid question but I thought it might provoke some conversation on a board filled with music nerds.

If you don't like this thread that much, just delete it.

I prefer to think of it as among the auguries for a shiny new, revitalized, nerd-friendly, "Don't Stop Me Now"-era Best Show forum!

That's just Jason being Jason. Sometimes he makes girls cry and quit the boards.

And by girls, I mean me.

I personally liked the question, WoodAndIron.

My vote is to keep the old stuff and the new stuff separate.  If the band changed their name, there was probably a reason and so the music before and after that point has some important distinction in artist's head.  I say respect the artist's distinction, even if it is improbably stupid.

And I feel your pain. I get similar low-grade angst because of iTunes' treatment of albums when an artist collaborates on a song (or songs).  iTunes categorizes that track separately from the rest of the album.  My two Ghostface Killah albums are scattered all over my library. Yes, I could organize by album, but the situation I am talking about is the exception, and so should not require me to switch from my preference of sorting by artist.

I'll chime in as a fellow obsessive. I reorganize most things that make browsing a disaster. And by disaster, I mean anything that challenges my alphabetical air-tight system. So I rename 'Bob Dylan' to 'Dylan, Bob', for example.

Like Jon brought up about Ghostface (and most any rappers), they've got so many guest artists, there'll be like 30 listings one you're done uploading a Wu-Tang album. I usually just rename tracks with parentheses.

Anyway.

I wouldn't change band names. It's your iPod, so you'll remember in the end which era and album you're looking for. I usually stick to what's comfortable and try not to think about the perfect way to organize. It's only gonna be perfect to me in the end.

Again, just use the Sort Artist field. That's what it's there for.

That's a practical solution, but what about the quandary?

Hey Woody, may I suggest adding the name or initials of a consistent band member to quandrifying artists/groups?

Yeah, that's what I end up doing.

yesno: I'll give that a try, too. Thanks.

Fredericks: That sounds like a good idea, too but I think I'll try the Sort Artist field that yesno offered.

Here's another tagging question:

How do you batch convert an entire library so that every album is tagged with the year in front of it? I know how to do it on a filename, but can't figure out how to change the actual album tag to read Year-Album.

Gilly, it won't help you if you don't have a Mac, but Doug's Applescripts site is pretty indispensable for fancy track wrangling.

I don't have a Mac. Normally Mp3tag can do everything I need, and I think it probably can do this too. I just can't figure out how.
