Title: Novelty foods/drinks
Post by: Pidgeon on February 16, 2011, 04:09:18 PM
Something I enjoy is seeking out weird foods/drinks and also anything foreign or "exotic" I can find (I love buying Jewish food, for example).

For starters, I bought some chocolate beer that I plan on trying tonight. I can't wait!

Does anybody have any experiences or recommendations to share?

Try finding this British brew--um, damn, I can't remember the brewery--it's Banana Bread beer.  I am open to exotic flavorings in the brewskis, chocolate stout. coffee stout, etc., but do not often find fruity beers to my liking.  This Banana Bread stuff though--fuck a stoat, that's good drinkin.'

I recently had Drank, the antienergy dietary supplement. Slow your roll.

(it tastes like flower soda)

It's Wells (http://www.wellsandyoungs.co.uk/home/our-beers/ales/wells-banana-bread-beer), unless there's more than one. I tried it last night, and second the recommendation. Thanks, cavwitnud!

I have similar interests. I run a website with a couple of friends where we review non-alcoholic drinks. We've found some pretty ridiculous stuff.

Check out the Hey Song Shaking Jelly drink. So strange and delicious.

My favorite international grocery store discoveries:

Puccho (http://puccho.jp/index.html), an amazing Japanese candy that's kind of difficult to explain

Speculoos, which has been more than making up for the lack of peanut butter in France

Something weird about peanut butter that I remember hearing about is that, outside of North America, it's really popular in the Netherlands. I don't know why (or why peanut butter isn't loved the world over, for that matter).

William F. Buckley often spoke and wrote of his love of peanut butter.  Maybe Europeans think that the stuff is a Republican plot.

Who wouldn't trust William F. Buckley with that accent of his?

There is a brewery in Dublin called Porterhouse that makes something called 'Oyster Stout'. It is good but hard to come by, and not cheap ($3.79/bottle at the one place I've found it here in town).

Was it Wells? I've had that and it was pretty deece.

There  are a few bars in town that get pumpkin beers around autumn. There's one beer, Southern Tier Pumpking, I think, that tastes EXACTLY like pumpkin pie- graham cracker crust and all. It's eery.

I want my beer to taste like pumpkin pie no more than I want my pumpkin pie to taste like beer.

Back when I used to drink I seem to remember all of the beer being sorta beer flavored. Do they make beer for adults any more or has all beer gone into Starbucks land?

If by "all" you mean "not much when compared to all the beer that's made," then yes (which I'm sure you did).

The Iron Monkey has a lot of "craft beers" on tap including what seems to be about a dozen different chocolate beers.

why are we putting chocolate into everything?  blegh.

personally, i can't stand chocolate or fruit beers/stouts, but i enjoy anything draught.

as for "novelty", in memphis, i enjoy the fried pickles.

I like this Alex vs. Alex crankiness.  It's cropping up all over the place.

I have no idea why I felt I needed to come to the defense of weird, unnatural beer.

Abita Strawberry, which is a seasonal beer from Louisiana, is awesome. Insanely great with boiled crawfish.

I like flavored beers when they taste good and don't when they don't.  I've had good pumpkin ales, good chocolate, coffee, and chicory stouts, and that banana bread brew.  Haven't had much luck with fruity ones, though I did once have a gooseberry beer that was pretty good, and I'm not just saying that because "gooseberry" is such a fun word. (Also, Dogfish Head makes something called "Raisin d'Etre" which is raisiny and good, but it costs over $10 for a 12-oz. bottle.)

Flavored coffees, however--gaaaahhhhh.

dogfish head doesn't make much of anything i don't enjoy; and i hear you on this one...i enjoyed it.

Comes with a Jon Langford-illustrated label too!  I think.

I thought it was pretty well known that a lot of beer, particularly unfiltered wheat beer, can take on a citrus or banana flavors.  I couldn't tell you a particular kind since I'm not much of a beer guy.  Chemicals.

Raison d'Extra is the one that is about $10 a bottle, it is a limited version of their Raison d'Etre which is about $10 for 6 12 oz bottles.  That's very good too if you want a cheaper option.

Not foreign or super exotic, just regional, but these are currently being devoured in great quantity in our household thanks to a care package from Marylanders.

Oh man, I try some awful Starbucks* thing every Christmas, never learning the lesson that any alien flavour in coffee instantly renders it revolting to me. I can't take coffee-flavoured stuff, either. Ice cream? Cake? Not me, man. I love coffee though.

*Just in case: yes, I know the lesson should be "don't go into Starbucks"

i'm familiar with the citrus, but not with the banana.

however, it is turning into that time of year where i enjoy a nice hefeweizen on ANY patio.
