Post by: daveM on August 07, 2006, 12:45:10 AM

Hi Tom,

'just wondering if you'll watch this on Monday so you can skewer it on the show.

Looks like it's Gene showing off what an ass he is.

Here's a link to the homepage:  http://www.aetv.com/genesimmonsfamilyjewels/index.jsp

I'm sure that Gene's show will fulfill many fontasies, at least for Gene at any rate.

Mostly the fontasy of still being on TV 28 years after his last relevant work.

And, to quote Charles Martin, "that iiiiis stretching it."

I whipped up a little Gene post as part of Recidivism's Programming bulletin series:

His version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" has to be heard to be believed.  It's no "Sweet Pain," however.

Again, my fondest wish for the Best Show is that Tommy play "Living in Sin (at the Holiday Inn)" from the same album.  Featuring Rose from the Poster Children.  I mean, Cher.

Actually my fondest wish is for an all-Zachary Brimstead spinoff, but I'll bide my time on that one.

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE tell me someone else saw Gene Simmons on The Henry Rollins Show this week.

I've never heard GS talk in an interview format, but he literally held up the KISS Visa card. There were mentions of his sobriety and My Dad the Rockstar, and I'm also pretty sure that he adjusted his wallet early on (not joking).

It was pretty amazing to see Rollins eat the whole thing up with a spoon. I know he's not an interviewer by trade, but he didn't even try to challenge anything GS said.

I saw this!  How about the God of Thunder's rant about the music industry!  I missed the wallet adjustment, but I'm sure it happened.

Are we forgetting about the legendary Fresh Air interview he did with Terry Gross?

I always thought of this interview as the inspiration for Gene Simmons as a "character".  That and Tongue magazine.

Nice! They played the end of that recently.

I was getting a 403 with the direct link, but if you go here (http://www.erim.net/archives/gene-simmons-and-terry-gross-interview), it'll work just fine and dandy.

EDIT: Read the comments!!!
"while you faggots pounder genes words, make your little comments on him, i remind you he lives how he wants, bang the best ass on the planet, makes more in a day than you make in a year, and he’s the fucked up one. the man is the man, accept it and move the fuck on you little losers "

Oh, my heaven.  I'm listening to it now.  Amazing.  The smugness!  The condescension!  The pretension!  The self-delight!  The studiedness!  The sleaze!  That contemptuous chuckle!

Truth be told, he reminds me of quite a few men I've met, though he's an exaggerated version thereof.

Glen Jones interviewed him over the phone on his interview show around the same time.  Gene was eating like a candy bar or something the whole time and was talking about something completely unrelated, then all the sudden busted out with "And I'm eating a Hershey bar, and that's just life."  Glen Jones was just like "Yeah, of course!"  Something like that.  (Completists, please dont' call me out for getting the food wrong, I got bigger fish to fry.)

The greatest moment in "doing something else while being interviewed" history is:

"... and he just blocks him!"

I had to stop there.

And just imagine how many times he's hauled out that bon mot.  He was so unspontaneous, it was scary.

I actually enjoy this show a lot. I think Simmons is pretty absurd, but he seems like he's probably a pretty decent, loving dad (at least the show portrays him that way, relatively speaking) and the real stars of the show are his kids because they are hilarious. I think the new episodes are on during Ice Road Truckers, though, so I don't watch anymore.

I watched the show for awhile and enjoyed it - but the outside the house stuff got to be too scripted and too contrived for me (the bull semen episode being the worst).

The family stuff is good though - for all his horrible, horrible personal faults, he and Shannon Tweed seem to have raised two very grounded kids, which is an accomplishment anywhere, but especially in the richer parts of LA.

Perfect point on why I don't watch and because Gene Simmons tries to get a buck out of anything

I love that he's still saying "if you welcome me with open arms, you have to open me with open legs" too...Yuck!

a Simmons call that was even better (if this isnt the one you were already talking about) was the one he made around hour 91 of Jonesy's Guinness World Record broadcast --- during that call, Simmons was eating a sandwich (i am pretty sure, or at least that's how i like to remember it), Jones was completely delirious and Simmons was prattling on and on about him, himself, and everything to do with him, while Jones was very obviously about comatose.  i remember Simmons said he would call back in later, as Jonesy got closer to the world record --- i can still hear simmons smacking his lips the whole time...

Oh yeah!  I remember that!  That wasn't the same call, it was the preamble to it.  That was the great thing I remember now.  The one of Jones's regular show was sort of a follow-up to the out-of-nowhere call from the marathon.
