Hey all!
As you all know, the WFMU fundraising marathon started this week and TONIGHT is Week One of The Best Show On WFMU's fundraising shows. If you didn't know, WFMU is a listener sponsored station that doesn't take corporate sponsorships or sleazy grants that compromise our ability to be 100 percent freeform. It lets me do what I do every week! But the only way that continues is if we receive your pledges!
We make it worth your while. I put together a premium that I am SO proud of called the DONT STOP ME NOW FANTASY PACK. Any pledge for 75 dollars or more automatically secures it. The pack consists of:
RATED G.G. - a vinyl single comprised of songs by notorious scum rocker GG Allin cleaned up and recorded by people exclusively for this single! The single will feature tracks by BEN GIBBARD, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, TY SEGALL, FUCKED UP and TED LEO! There will also be a bonus DIGITAL DOWNLOAD of the single that will feature additional content by HOME BLITZ, SCHARPLING AND WURSTER and MORE!
The single will not be for sale in stores and will only be available by pledging DURING MY MARATHON SHOW!
The fun pack also includes a POSTER designed by CHARLES BURNS! And there will also be an amazing T-SHIRT! And a BUTTON!
And the only way to get these things is to pledge DURING MY SHOW TONIGHT - from 9 PM to midnight EST!
You can pledge by calling 800-989-9368 or online at wfmu.org, but again - you must do it DURING MY SHOW.
We try to make the marathon shows fun instead of being a boring PBS pledge snooze. And I could not be more excited to have two VERY special guests live in the studio tonight: TED LEO and CARL NEWMAN of the New Pornographers will be in studio playing songs and having a ton of fun!
I will also be giving out all kinds of prizes during the show with random drawings. Great books and records and signed stuff and super rare things!
WFMU also offers a variety of premiums that you can get for pledging at different prize levels. You can check them out by going to http://www.wfmu.org/marathon/tch.shtml (http://www.wfmu.org/marathon/tch.shtml)
I will also be explaining everything that you get when you pledge at the different levels on the air tonight.
And for the high rollers I am also going to have a work of art designed by STEVE LAMBERT that goes to the person who pledges the most money over the course of the two weeks!
But high roller or entry level pledge, we need EVERYONE to step up and make it happen! TONIGHT! wfmu.org! 9-midnight EST!
Thanks for any and all help with spreading the word! I am grateful!
Tom.

And if someone could post the t-shirt in this thread I would appreciate it!
Thanks!

Tom, I can't say how amazing the shirt is! My pledge is all set for 9PM. Come on, FOTs!
-
Home Blitz!
I am very excited for this premium!
-
Badabababa, I'm lovin' that shirt.
-
Spike made it on the shirt...SPIKE MADE IT ON THE SHIRT! That shirt, is incredible, and I will wear it proudly.
-
The poster by Charles Burns might well have been sufficient to garner pledges from FoTs. But the shirt and the G. G. Alin covers make it irresistable...
-
I cannot wait to wear that shirt.
-
I cannot express how excited I am to see the Charles Burns poster. One of my favorite artists.

This is so exciting, I'm so glad the record was broken and i'm glad i could help, even if in the smallest of ways.
Carry on Tom!

Congrats Tom. It was an honor to be there.

Simply amazing! I think the fact that Spike got on the shirt made more people call.
-
Yeah!

Successful Best Show pledge drives always get me pumped up, triumph of the slobs. I feel like I could lift a truck over my head.
Way to go Tom and all the pledgers.

This is so awesome.
I grew up about two miles from the old studio in East Orange. WFMU was such a large part of my formative years -- it was such a great way to discover punk and garage rock and indie music. I also developed my radio prank phone calling skills on various WFMU talk shows until I was unearthed and grounded. (Gerard Cosloy was one of my frequent targets and gave my family's phone number out over the air. Forgive me -- I was 12.) And then I ACTUALLY started calling into shows and talked to so many interesting people.
But WFMU was so much more than hearing "Another Girl, Another Planet" or being able to talk to Jim Carroll or the authors of The New Roadside America. It was like a secret code amongst weirdoes. The people I still hang out with from growing up and consider my best friends were all WFMU fans (and a few pledged last night).
I'm so glad that the station is now an international phenomenon and people all over the world can listen and have it influence them the same way it did me. And obviously the station still has a big influence on me -- I'm way more of a comedy nerd than a music nerd these days and The Best Show has been my favorite thing in comedy for a really long time.
So thanks to everyone who worked the phone banks and all of that. It's seriously fantastic that people put in time and money to help out the station.

A huge THANK YOU to everybody who pledged and helped out and generally made last night a complete triumph!
We will be back NEXT WEEK with more guests and thrills and surprises!
Tom.

Thanks to everyone who pledged and helped out during the show. You're the best!

I tried to pledge but the number didn't work. What was that number again, Mike? 1-800-989-9369?

1(800) ASK- MIKE

Tom, you forgot you will be back with more triumph as well...

What can I say? It was a Freudian slip. Or just a sexy slip (69 being the sexiest number).

I decided to listen really hard to the thank-yous. I've never heard my name read out before. It was difficult to know which one was me since every other male FOT seemed to be called 'Jeff'.
Impressed with Therese not fumbling the name of my town though. Half the people I speak to get it wrong.
-
I watched as Theresa read the names of the donors, including mine (she used my real first name).
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I don't think my name was read out but there was at least one other person from Calgary who donated. Made me feel oddly proud and I had a big smile for the rest of the day after I donated.
