Title: Tom a chump?!
Post by: Sarah on April 19, 2007, 08:34:57 AM
Anyone listen to last night's Seven Second Delay?  Andy Breckman had the audacity to call Tom a chump!  Why?  Because Tom cares about his listeners!

I have three words for Mr. Breckman:  "How dare you!"

P.S.  Ken said the Best Show's is WFMU's most popular podcast.

Sounds like Mr. Breckman is campaigning for a stint in the Hate Pit.  I'm sure Matt Drudge and Mickey Dolenz would welcome the company.

Mickey Dolenz is mayor of the Hate Pit!

It's the only show on WFMU I've ever listened to.. It's pretty much my favorite radio show ever.

That's weird (but wonderful).  But it doesn't really jibe with the total subscriber figures that Tom reported.  How does that work anyway?  I'm a Best Show Podcast subscriber, but if I don't actually update on a certain week (because I had the luxury of hearing the broadcast live) does that lower the total number of subscribers for that week by one?  To be precise, when I fire up iTunes, my Podcast item shows the available number of new podcasts for download -- I have to explicitly update the podcast myself.

Just curious.

Well, it is a high school station.

I have a feeling Tonto (why are we calling him that anyway?) hasn't been giving out the real numbers. Another possibility is that they are considering it the most popular by downloads, not subscribers.  I don't know why you would manually download it every week when subscribing will do it automatically, but it's possible.

I can confirm that the subscriber totals that Tom has revealed on the show are 100% accurate.  I've done the research.  The low numbers are sad, but true, although I suspect there was a boost during the SAVE THE PODCAST initiative leading up to the marathon.

It just seems odd that so many people came out of the woodwork to save the podcast if there were only like 40 subscribers or whatever.

I was wrong.  I am subscribed.  I noticed that the Return of The Kid podcast was there in my podcast listing in iTunes, and I did nothing to put it there.

Omar, is there a distinction between downloaders / subscribers? Is it possible for a Best Show Fan to download an episode (i.e. a podcast) without being a subscriber?

Yes -- one can download specific episodes without being an official subscriber.  I just received word that the subscriber total is up to 87!  The Save the Podcast inititative yielded a boost.  Also, wasn't Petey supposed to promote the podcast as part of his bridge troll sentence?  Did he lasso any new subscribers?

The 87 was an older figure.  It's up to 112!!

If I knew of a way to manually download each podcast episode to my computer, I would much rather do that than use iTunes. I don't use iTunes for anything else, it's really slow and annoying, and it doesn't name the files right. It's really irritating.

So, if anybody knows of a way for me to manually download the podcasts via a website or different program that doesn't eat RAM the way iTunes does, please please let me know. :)

Are you on Windows, Missy? Because, yes, iTunes is slow and awful on Windows.
