When I discussed my awful Neil Young concert experience, I was not being metaphorical. It really was horrible!
-
He's my all-time favorite and I haven't seen him. So it's better this than nothing imo. But I watched videos on youtube and I liked it. Maybe he'll change it up a little this time. Does he do any acoustic?
-
Nothin'.
-
Also, these clips alone make me want to go:
Neil Young - After The Gold Rush - Live in Winnipeg July 27, 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGkvh4DGcOc&feature=related#ws)
Neil Young - Old Man (live 7-29-2010) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDnZ8hhyTzI&feature=related#ws)
-
I'm seeing The Dead Milkmen, Ted Leo, Screaming Females, and a bunch of other bands on Saturday at this thing:
http://mwtxparty.com/ (http://mwtxparty.com/)
It's also going to be my birthday, I'm pretty excited.
-
I missed seeing Walter Lure playing with Charlie Pickett because I don't check my Gmail account very often.

Very little. Not nearly enough. That concert was 20 minutes of joy, 55 minutes of tedium. At a buck a minute, that's a bad mix.
-
Man or Astroman? & Barrington Levy in recent weeks. Different bills, obv.
My spring/early summer is looking like:
Strange Boys
Pixies
Guitar Wolf/Cheap Time
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
Anvil
and probably the Sled Island music festival in June.
All in all, not too shabby.
-
Titus Andronicus
Wire (maybe)
Really kicking myself for missing Wild Flag last week.

That's a nice bill. happy birthday.
I plan on seeing Mike Watt in early April.

Re: Concert Un-attendance
This year I've already missed
-Superchunk... had to work late
-Belle and Sebastian... it was on the night of girls festival and I had to do family stuff

Yeh I missed The New Pornographers, Neko Case and Yo La Tengo of the last two years. I also had tickets to A silver Mt Zion, just didn't go. I'm dumb. Gunna be a while before I get the chance again.
Has anyone seen Earth? Should I see Earth? No?

I saw Earth when they toured on their last album. It was enjoyable but it got old fast. I didn't stay for the whole show. It's the only rock show I've ever seen where the drummer didn't sweat.
-
Mike Watt in April, Ted Leo solo in early May and Mary Poppins: The Musical in a couple weeks. I don't go to many shows these days (claustrophobia issues/enjoy getting to bed before 2am) but I'm pretty excited for these three. Wanted to see Neil Young when he comes to town but that's a little too rich for my blood.

Pogues w/ Titus Andronicus tonight at Terminal 5. Terrified of crowd's level of drunkenness, though...

I don't usually know what shows I'm going to until a week in advance, so I can't make a months-long forecast. Here's the docket for the next 7-10 days:
Tonight: River City Tanlines/Sweet Eagle
3/21: White Hills/Birds of Avalon
3/25: Japanther/Surf City (maybe)
3/27: Destroyer/The War on Drugs
There are some Memphis shows I'm looking forward to: Guitar Wolf/Cheap Time, Jonathan Richman, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I'm considering going to Austin to see Wire, but I probably won't.

Victoria, BC (Vancouver Island), a pretty small market, so its nice that so many good shows are coming to town. The only one I need to travel to the mainland for is Guitar Wolf, but it will be so worth it: rock n' roooooll!
-
I'll probably be at Sled Island as well, hardweek. Could a Calgary gathering be in the cards?
-
If I can find my ticket I too will be at the Godspeed You! Black Emperor concert this Saturday.
-
Recently caught The Parting Gifts, Obits, and Ty Segall. All were fantastic.
Upcoming is Destroyer, Lightning Bolt, and The Mountain Goats.

sounds great!

I'll be seeing the Mountain Goats three or four times in the next month. Should be great.

I'm gonna see James McMurtry with The Bottle Rockets opening up next friday. Pretty pumped. Cool points = -50.

I saw McMurtry about 10 years ago. He was great. He's near the top of the singer-songwriter charts for me.
-
Strange Boys & Fresh and Onlys next Tuesday at the Echoplex in L.A. Be there.

Sled Island is shaping up nicely, once again. Looks like I'm going to Calgary in June. Recordland or bust!

I saw Black Lips the other weekend at the troc and the sound was really bad especially for the Vivian Girls. They were good but place was empty though. But I think I've just been to sold out shows there. Next up is Iron & Wine on Thursday.
-
I'm seeing Black Lips/Vivian Girls tonight at the Southgate House in Newport, KY (basically Cincinnati). It's usually a pretty good venue, so I hope the sound's better.
I saw Todd Barry and Neil Hamburger on The Spring Value Tour at the same venue this past weekend. It was good. Sound was fine.
-
I'm seeing the Black Lips/Vivian Girls tomorrow night at Logan Square Auditorium. Unfortunately it's an all-ages show which means it needs to be over by 10:00 PM thanks to Chicago's insane curfew laws.

Maybe this is a sure sign I'm getting old, but a concert that has to end at 10Pm kind of sounds amazing.

I recently hit that point for shows during the week, though 10pm on Friday is still pretty early. Any show past midnight has to really be worth it.
-
I saw Vivian Girls/Black Lips a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't feeling BL live. Not blaming the band - they brought it; I guess I just wasn't taking it.
Ted Leo on Wednesday. This will only be the third TL solo show I've seen out of 25+ times I've seen him live.
-
Titus Andronicus on Thursday
Ted Leo Solo on Sunday.
Good weekend.

Neil Young on Saturday.
Great Weekend!
ps- Sloan and The Strange Boys are playing Kung Fu Necktie this summer. How is that venue PP? Also if I wasn't going to Neil I'd def check out Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings playing a free show on Broad St. Saturday at 6.
I saw Iron & Wine at The Electric Factory last Thursday here in Philly. It's been lingering in the back of my mind for a while and a few others I know agree that the sound is such shit that I'm afraid I have to boycott. The show was almost unlistenable. Vocals were shooting feedback all over the place, the sax(which I don't like to begin with) sounded other-worldly(in a bad way) and the quiet songs were ruined with backup vocals that were screechy and even louder than the lead singers. I left early.
So apparently I won't be seeing Dinosaur Jr. play BUG. Unless I can be convinced otherwise.

Dave you've warned me a few times but my stubborn attitude and the fact that Neil isn't getting any younger are my driving factors. You liked Bert Jansch right?
-
Bert Jansch was great, but the unwashed masses in Knoxville weren't giving him any love. Rich baritone voice, intelligent Brit-folky lyrics, and 45 minutes of some of the loveliest guitar work I have ever heard. And many people at the concert I attended loved Neil, too. But I think they were just in denial.

I've never actually been to Kung Fu Necktie for a show, I'll report back after Ted Leo.
Agreed on Electric Factory, horrible venue.
-
I saw the Hank IV and Mudhoney in Oakland tonite. The Hank IV was a good time ... lotsa funny between-song patter. Mudhoney was great. I moshed like I was 20 again ... For short periods of time. With several rest breaks. My energy was starting to dip towards the end of the show, but then they played "Hate the Police" in their encore set and I was totally revivified.
-
Reporting back from Kung Fu Necktie, it's a cool space, pretty small, basically a mini version of Johnny Brenda's.
Ted Leo was great in general, but his final 3 songs could not have been more perfect. 3rd to last was an acoustic Bottled in Cork with the audience singing along. Followed by Timorous Me, my favorite TL song; when he announced he had one more song, a part of me was thinking how cool it would have been if he'd have closed with my personal favorite. Then he started playing BACK SEAT OF MY CAR off Ram. I loved it so much. Ted Leo is the best.
-
Would it be inappropriate for me to request the How Was Your Week theme when I see him on Thurs.? Because I can't get it out of my head.
-
@Paul DePhil, I am curious, how do you manage to attend so many shows? Do you save your ticket stubs? Are you in the music business/field? Do you average one show a week all year? If you do, would you post the shows for your whole year? It would be interesting to see a music-viewing self-portrait.
-
Well here's the deal. I work a fulltime job that pays decent for a single guy and I pay a fairly reasonable rent downtown with utilities included. I am also a wheelchair user because of a neurological condition I got when I was a teenager, which sucks yeh, but it also gives me VIP seating in most venues which makes shows very pleasant and worthwhile. I was dating a girl for half a year and my concert attendance slowed down alot but now that I am single again I only have to buy one ticket to everything, which makes it alot more reasonable.
Some shows I went to this past year: My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk, Mark Kozelek, Joanna Newsom, Elvis Perkins, Josh Ritter, Devendra Banhart, Mountain Goats, Kurt Vile, Pavement, John Prine, Swell Season, David Cross, Paul F Tompkins, Louis CK, Soupjam Stevens, Bill Callahan, The Flaming Lips, Explosions in the Sky, Black Lips, She & Him, Godspeed, The Felice Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, David Rawlings Machine, Justin Townes Earle, Neil Young
But like when I go to shows at the theatres in town the ADA section is usually 10 feet from the stage. So that makes a $50 tickets seem more worth it.
So going to shows is pretty confortable for me. But I can understand why others might plan their attendance more carefully.
-
I hope you also have a pair of acoustic ear plugs, as you can get hearing loss and tinnitus easily from only 9 minutes of too loud music. The shows that you've been to sound great, and I agree, and know from the time when I was able to get VIP seating, it makes a world of difference. For me, it also helped me bring my kids with me to see bands that I wouldn't have brought them to with the standing on the floor/no available seating plan of a lot of clubs.
I would have loved to have seen Monsters of Folk when they performed, I wonder if they'll do that again? As well as the David Rawlings Machine, and many of the ones you've mentioned here.

First time there but I liked this place a lot too. The knick knacks and other assorted kitsch hanging behind the bar were pretty cool. Was also nice to have some room to move around at a sold out gig.
Ted absolutely killed it. Words can't do justice to how incredibly great he was. An amazing show and well worth the wait.

I think they said there's going to be a follow-up. It was the next best thing to MMJ. Acoustic Smokin' from Shooting was awesomesauce.
-
I went to see Soupjam Stevens in Manchester last night. I don't get to many gigs, and the last one I saw wa Pet Shop Boys last July. I wasn't expecting Soupjam's show to be camper, more spectacular or have more onstage dancing and costumes. But it was and it did.

I hated it. I really hate Sufjan now, it's official.
Did he do that dumb little seminar about the Louisiana artist?

He did! I really enjoyed it, but I did get off on the fact that people around me were getting so frustrated! I think a lot of people just expected him to do Illinois, but, y'know, that was 6 years ago. In fact, there was a bit of a Dylan/Free Trade Hall vibe.
-
Saw Rush last week. Going to see The Mountain Goats on Sunday.
-
Mission Of Burma on Thursday.
-
Next week: The Greenhornes/JEFF The Brotherhood and Wanda Jackson/Holly Golightly, if I have the money.
-
I just got back from Fleet Foxes and what a great one that was. It's been a while since I heard such great acoustics at a show.
But I have the biggest freaking headache right now because the guy sitting next to me wreaked of cheap cologne and cigarettes.
-
Still recovering from the Guitar Wolf onslaught last night.
Just as good as ever. First time seeing them without Bass Wolf, but the new kid is pretty awesome in a CJ kinda way.
I'm pooped.
-
I saw Austerity Program last week. They rocked.
-
Gearing up for Sled Island next weekend. Can't wait!
-
I'm pretty pumped up about tonight's show at Terminal 5 - F@cked Up, OFF!, and Dinosaur Jr. featuring interview by Henry Rollins.
-
I just got a cheap ticket for Archers of Loaf Sunday at Webster Hall, from Stubhub. Thankfully the Music Hall of Williamsburg show sucked up all of the hype and people are dumping tickets for the Webster Hall show like yesterday's trash.
-
I'm going to see Art Brut at the MHoW tonight. I am excited.
-
Anyone going to the Dinosaur Jr show at the Electric Factory tomorrow night? I just got a free ticket, so I'll be there. 8)

I wish. They put on a pretty fine show tonight in NYC. Got there late and missed Off! but made sure to see Fucked Up's set and holy cow, it was amazing. Not to mention Tom himself jumping into the furious, but loving, mosh pit. Some dimwit threw a shoe on the stage while Rollins was interviewing J, Murph, and Lou, which made for a humorous moment as Rollins threateningly chewed out the shoe-tosser.
Enjoy it!

Did you go? Just got back from the show at Webster Hall and had a great time. They really haven't lost a step. Matt Gentling also made a Jon Wurster reference toward the end...
-
Drove 4 hours to see Yo La Tengo in Minneapolis on Friday. Got to say hello to Ira for a minute. The show was so strong, I left completely pulverized.
-
Just saw Brian Wilson and his band play their Gershwin show in Winnipeg. They ended up playin all sorts of stuff i didnt expect like Salt Lake City and pet sounds
-
The Rollins interview at the Dinosaur Jr show was a waste of time. I couldn't hear a thing but my friend up front said it was akward as hell and after a few seconds people were already demanding music.
Might go see Fountains of Wayne later this summer.

I did, they were rock solid. And they played "All Hail the Black Market"! Now bring on those Merge reissues.

Complete with the threats to the shoe thrower and the unnecessary applause at the mention of the year 1985.

Has anyone seen Thurston Moore solo? I am going to his show in August mainly because I've been itching to see Meg Baird live. Is he good solo, I've been into his solo albums but haven't heard the new one. I hear Beck produced it.
-
I saw Hall and Oates at Summerfest. It was fun.
-
Going to see SWANS in Nashville this September. Am super excited about it since I've never seen them and thought I'd never get the chance.
I saw Austerity Program last week. They rocked.
I love this band. Wish they could make it down south sometime.
-

I saw them in the fall and it was even better than I had hoped. Gira's crowd interactions are always great.
-
I noticed there's a lot of Philadelphia concert talk on this thread. Here's a not entirely comprehensive list of some shows I've seen recently:
Damon & Naomi @ the Unitarian Church side chapel (not as good as I thought it would be)
Earth @ Johnny Brenda's (WAY better than I thought it would be)
Crooked Fingers @ KFN (last night!)
I'm also planning on seeing Bill Callahan, Gang Gang Dance, The Psychic Paramount, Mountain Man, War on Drugs and probably some others later this summer. I'm out of town for the Archers of Loaf reunion, which is sad, but I saw their Jimmy Fallon performance on youtube and, while good, it didn't make me regret even more not being able to see them.

Had tickets to see him once at Johnny Brenda's (when he was touring to support "Trees Outside the Academy") but got there too late and didn't feel like pushing through the crowd so the wife and I left. Couldn't hear very well from where we were standing anyway but Thurston was wearing a GZA t-shirt - so that made it sort of worth it I guess. Saw him again about a year later opening for Roky Erickson in New York and I thought he was as good as any Sonic Youth show I've ever seen. Great show.

I saw Bill Callahan for free at AKA two years ago I would go to this but family is visiting that weekend. I'm debating seeing MY Morning Jacket at The Mann. Neko Case is opening!

I think the Mann is a decent place to see a show. The first show I saw there was Pavement last Fall. The sound for Kurt Vile's opening set was awful, but Pavement sounded great. Personally, I find My Morning Jacket really annoying. But Neko Case is amazing. We should all do whatever it takes to see her as many times as possible.

I saw GBV at the Cannery back in January. We had a few drinks at the Mercy Lounge. Its a pretty cool place.
-
Saw Fucked Up/JEFF the Brotherhood tonight. It was a great show. NO WEAK PITS. Damian is the nicest guy, giving out hugs to everyone.
-
keyloser - I was at that GBV show as well. I seem to remember they had a list of drink specials named after GBV songs. I think I had the Official Ironmen Rally Screwdriver or something.
I saw Fucked Up in St. Louis Friday night. It was one of those joyous, life-affirming rock shows you're lucky to see every five years or so. They were really spectacular, and I will never fail to be impressed by how Damian can make those crushed cups stick to his head.
Saw about half of R. Stevie Moore last night. The stuff he played with the band was really great and got everybody excited, but then the band left after about four songs and Stevie played a rambling, uncomfortable solo set that succeeded only in clearing out the room. The band ended up coming back, but I was still tired from driving home from St. Louis the night before, so I left.
And thaaaat's the story of concerts!

I have nothing to look forward to 'til the end of August. I might go see Barrington Levy.
-
I had so much fun at Barrington Levy this past spring.
I had so much fun at Fucked Up last night.
It has been SUCH a surprisingly great year for shows. The cup runeth over.
PS: That Ty Segall/Redd Kross poster is so great-thanks for posting it!

Got a free ticket to Slayer, Rob Zombie, and Exodus last night (why do I hear Tom's "I'm sorry" voice in my head?).
So, so dumb, but so, so entertaining!

The Ettes Saturday!

I saw Ted Leo and The Pharmacists at a free show on Cincinnati's Fountain Square. They were great, and he gave a shout out to Yetta! His guitar pedal seemed to conk out a few times, but he said that he was going to buy a new one the next day w/ all of the sweet coin that they were making from the show.
The next night, Talib Kweli had a free show on Fountain Square. Sadly, no Yetta rhymes were incorporated into the set (e.g. "nobody's betta", "loves to eat chedda", "allergic to Feta", "Leon Panetta", "pancetta", "bruschetta" ... and further jokes.)
Paul McCartney is playing at Great American Ball Park tonight, but tickets were a little steep.

Just found out we're getting Earth and Man...or Astro-man? in Memphis in the near future. That and the Swans show in Nashville next month have got me super excited.
Thinking about going to Nashville twice in September because Elvis Costello's doing the Spinning Songbook at the Ryman on the 25th. I've seen him five or six times, but I imagine this'll be a great show. Plus, Blood and Chocolate is my favorite E.C. record, and this tour is like the one he did for that album.

Personal & The Pizzas tomorrow night! And I think I am gunna see Dr. Dog and Justin Townes Earle for free this weekend for something to do.

Next week, I'm djing between two bands I couldn't care less about, but couldn't resist taking the gig: Nashville Pussy & Reverend Horton Heat. Guess I'll have to bust out the brylcream and gas station jacket to go with the Vince Ray poster.

I watched the pride of Philly, Matador recording artist and friend of the show Kurt Vile playing and singing his greatest hits to a huge, responsive outdoor crowd in Malmö tonight. Then I watched Swedish legends Bob Hund.
-
A few weeks ago I saw Prince in Dublin. If anyone heard that episode of the PFT's podcast where he discusses going to a Prince show you'll know how good this was.
-
I have nothing to look forward to 'til the end of August. I might go see Barrington Levy.
I got my ticket two weeks ago and the show sold out right after. The show was supposed to be last night, but was postponed (for obvious reasons) thankfully (instead of outright cancelled) until the end of September.
Yo La Tengo in a couple of weeks!

This week is a projected W with Meg Baird opening for Thurston Moore tonight then free Deer Tick on Friday and free Dr. Dog and Justin Townes Earle on Saturday.
I just read that Ray Davies is coming in November. It seems like he's one of the few greats that isn't afraid to play his old songs.

Meg Baird is great, but if Thurston's set is anything like what he did at Pitchfork fest this summer, you'll have a nice nap.

I saw Eddie Money play last Friday, he's not afraid to play the old songs either. Also he plays his own saxophone, which I thought was very classy.

I liked Thurston and his band a lot. They were actually very upbeat and semi-enthusiastic. For a guy who supposedly listens to 99% noise music, he sure can make some beautiful compositions. I'll say that I was pleasantly suprised by the performance and I'd recommend it to anyone. But after a long day of work I found it hard to keep my eyes open during the Meg Baird set of all new material. The new songs don't click like her last collection. They may work differently on the new record, we'll see.

I sympathize with Mr. Moore; I've only been able to listen to air mixes since 1997.

Tonight is going to be fun.

I saw Justin Townes Earle last night. It was staggering. If you, like me, were/are a fan of his old man who hasn't enjoyed a record of his since Transcendental Blues, the baton has been passed. Justin's songs, singing and playing are amazing, and the backstory of being his father's son makes the whole thing electric. I was thinking last night, I don't know if I've ever been a huge fan of a musician and then ended up liking their offspring even more.
If you're a fan of his records, do NOT miss him when he comes to town.
This video doesn't even convey the experience in person.

I saw Barrington Levy at The Ocean Mist in Matunuck, RI on Saturday. It had been rescheduled because of Tropical Storm Irene. It was good but short. The band's flight from Costa Rica was delayed. He played a second show on Sunday, but I couldn't spare another $30.
Next month is The Aggrolites, Screaming Females, ZOUNDS (beat out the Lemonheads who are playing the same night), and Jonathan Richman all in one week, and only one trip to Boston.

I won tickets to see Elvis Costello last night! Still amazing after all these years!!! Spinning wheel, and a circus cage where his dancers and some lucky audience members got to dance!
After a few dancers pulled from the audience danced in it and sat at a little bar on bar stools, MARY LOUSE PARKER (yes, my favorite mom character, from Weeds) came on stage with Elvis and when he asked her to sit at the bar and try the cage, she remarked, "It might need some sanitizer before I attempt that!" as one of the previous audience member dancers "Bernadette" had looked like she was right out of stripper/ pole dancing class with a touch of something; it was an hilarious zinger! (Sorry Bernadette, wherever you are, but every 15 minutes of fame comes with a price tag.) Mary Louise Parker then rocked that dance cage for two or three songs!
Elvis played and played and played, (including a Cash and Prince song) then at the end of the show came out and played an incredibly long encore set!
I am still smiling!

Good lord, did you time travel to 1986? Because I pretty much saw the SAME SHOW then (minus MLP). Not kidding.

Saw Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin and Human Eye on Sat. One of the best shows I've seen this year.
Cronin's self-titled debut is one of my favorite albums of the year and he was fantastic pulling double duty with his band and then Ty.
