Title: All Things Must Pass...right by Eric Clapton
Post by: jgcomas on March 29, 2011, 12:09:55 PM
Tom,

I've wanted to ask you for your opinion on this for years. What is the deal with George Harrison letting Clapton spread himself all over All Things Must Pass? What do you think Harrison saw in Clapton?

WHY WHY WHY!?!?

Just wondering

Uh, I'm not Tom, but I do think some historical context is called for here.  Clapton was a very good guitarist and didn't have the extensive record of being a schmuck in 1970 that he does today.

Also take into account that a previous Harrison/Clapton collaboration resulted in "Badge," which is one of the best songs ever.

I heard Taxman was about Clapton's wife.

Plus also don't forget that Clapton is playing the lead guitar on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Plus George Harrison could see into the future and it turns out that "Tears in Heaven" was his favorite song.

Did you know that a convicted murderer played drums on All Things Must Pass?

How could George have let this happen?

You could possibly even make a case for two murderous drummers on the album, depending on what you think the ethical implications are on Phil Collins watching that guy watch that guy drown.

Re: Tom's story on last night's show, I would/would have been OK with Harrison, Ringo, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Joey Molland, Pete Ham and Tom Evans signing the front of my copy of ATMP. Alan White, Gary Brooker, Ginger Baker, Klaus Voorman, Mal Evans and Dave Mason could sign the back. Everybody else would have to sign one of the inner sleeves except Collins and Gary Wright, who would have had to sign their names next to "I Remember Jeep" and "Thanks For All The Pepperoni" on the label on the last side of the Apple Jam record.

I can't decide which of "Thanks For The Pepperoni" or "It's Johnny's Birthday" is my favorite. I suppose it depends on what kind of mood I'm in.

That's one half-ape half-drumming machine?

Clapton's work with Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Cream was revolutionary. The guy was an incredible talent.

But I do think that once George opened the door for Clapton, he couldn't get rid of him until Eric stole George's then-wife (and Clapton's then-future-wife) Pattie Boyd-Harrison-Clapton.

How creepy is it to be so obsessed with your friend's wife that you write an album about it? I don't care how talented of a musician you are that's just messed up.
