Title: soundtrack to my Hawaii trip.
Post by: Andy on April 22, 2007, 06:53:44 PM
I'm about to go to Oahu for a week and I want to fill up my ipod for the trip.  What should I go with?  New music?  Old music with a theme?

Are you going to drink cocktails out of a pineapple on Mel's lanai?

Also, can we have a moment of silence for Don Ho? He passed on recently.

I should probably sell my Don Ho tiki mug on eBay. It's HIDEOUS.

I got nothin (besides the late Don Ho already mentioned above) -- have heard Hawaiian pop music from internet friends, but can't remember any of the bands or singers they recommended.  I wasn't too impressed with the stuff I heard, a little too sentimental for my taste, but when in Rome ... I always try to check out public radio stations for a few minutes at least before or when I travel someplace where there's interesting local stuff to be heard.  In Hawaii, I don't remember if that exists.  Commercial radio usually blows, everywhere, but in Honolulu there are a few stations that might be interesting for a few minutes.  Or they might suck.  I'd tune in anyway.  This is risky, so please don't blame me if this turns out to be a bad idea.

Not as literal a recommendation as the others, but I think Sam Prekop's first album (http://www.amazon.com/Sam-Prekop/dp/B00000GBRB) would be wonderful in that setting.

You should listen to a bunch of reggae and calypso just to throw things off a little.

Luke Vibert and BJ Cole - Stop the Panic

Quote from: Discogs
BJ Cole is an experimental Hawaiian steel guitarist. He plays the slack-key style of slide guitar but takes it to other dimensions; ordinarily he'd be playing with a combo more likely to suit Fred Frith or Hans Reichel, but apparently he and Luke Vibert got to be mates and decided to record some light-hearted fun together, with spectacular, cohesive and fun results, as the previous comment notes. breaks, d'n'b, hawaiian lounge and acid, like a mai tai in heaven.

Great album.

Reggae is actually pretty popular in Hawaii, which came as a surprise to me when I found that out.

I spent my formative years in Hawaii (4-14 years old, from 1980-90) and the radio there was and still is just as corporate as the rest of America.  I had to listen to the Jets, Expose, and MC Hammer throughout this time period. I go back every Christmas and their big radio show is Alice Cooper's, whose  show apparently originates from California.  Your best bet these days while there is the University of Hawaii's radio station which is pretty much the only free-format station in the islands, I forget the number on the dial.  Check out Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Facing Future" if you want to hear what the locals are into, i.e. Eddie Vedder covers these songs when Pearl Jam rolls into town and it makes front page headlines the next day. Also Keola & Kapono Beamer's "Honolulu City Lights" is a true local classic.  Yes, Reggae is popular there, but there was an insipid trend of music in the early '90s called "Jawaiian" music which mixed reggae with ukuleles and the sort.  It thankfully was extinguished within two years.  Not a fan.  HAVE FUN!!!

I just found this thread...two years too late. There needs to be a msgboard bat-signal for things like this. Hope your trip was good in any case, Andy.

And Jack, you'll be horrified to learn that "Jawaiian" has not only NOT been "extinguished", but is as popular as ever. In fact, the ad agency I just finished a big wireless TV campaign for used insipid Jawaiian music as the signature soundtrack for the commercials.

I find it sadly ironic how much I hate "local" Hawaiian music, and yet when Shellac played a show about a block away from where I worked a few years ago, I blew it off in favor of taking a much needed nap at home.

I apologize for Jack Johnson, as well.
