Title: Happy Record Store Day!

How'd everybody make out?

There ain't a record in the world I want enough to stand in that line at amoeba today.  Hoping against hope that they have some David's Town LPs left at the end of the day.

The only Record Store Day exclusives are the Big Star and Televisio. But I also got the Rocket from the Crypt 7", The Ronnettes 7", and 2 OOP Oblivians 10"

Had to pass on the Television, and missed the boat on the Big Star.

That Music Machine/RFTC single is excellent, btw.

BTW, how do I make this pic show up as a pic?

You hit that mona lisa button up there and put the direct link between the things.

Looks like you made off nice, Paul!

Didn't buy any exclusive stuff, but I picked up Dream Syndicate and Dead Moon live LPs.

I skipped out on standing out in the rain this morning but hit up the Numero Group's pop-up store here in Chicago. They were out of LP copies of their exclusive release for today so I picked it up on CD. Also picked up the amazing Syl Johnson Anthology on LP. Can't recommend it enough. Could've spent all day digging in the crates but I wanted to get home to watch the playoffs.

K, figured it out, thanks.
Stuck to exclusives, got the Off!, Bad Brains, Stones, & Cults 45s. The lp was a limited edition (300 copies) RSD comp of Vancouver/Victoria bands put out by Mint Records & CiTR radio (note the Destroying head of the totem lol). CDs were a stack of freebies. It was a good day.

Anyone get the Ty Segall Ty Rex or New Pornographers 7". My stores had neither. They said Record Store Day is unfair and wildly unreliable and never to get your hopes up for anything.

No dice on Pornographers or Ty Rex either, but I was told weeks ago that there wasn't a hope for either.

My numero comp is coming Tuesday. Wish I coulda got that 13th Floor Elevators. Wish I coulda afforded the Big Star record....

That Alexei Sayle record cracks me up, Martin. I'm a few weeks behind on Best Show, and I just listened to the bit that references Get Carter, and I immediately had that song in my head, for the first time in many, many years. I forgot about the Kray Twins pic sleeve!

We had lots of local in-stores, and this guy, who was really funny, and poignant, in more or less the style of early Dylan.
Hayes Carll - "She Left Me For Jesus" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3ie4VhcLT0&feature=related#)

I didn't buy anything, but I drop about 50 bucks a month in there as it is.

I got the New Pornographers 7", Superchunk/Coliseum split 7", and David's Town LP. No Ty Rex at either of the stores I visited. I did buy a Ty Segall live LP that was marked as a RSD exclusive but turns out not to be.

The New Pornographers 7" has a digital download not only of both tracks but the video, which is awesome. Unfortunately, the download has crapped out twice in mid-download (it's 300 MB, so it takes awhile), which means I only have 1 attempt left. I'm hoping it's just everyone who bought the 7" trying to download at the same time. I'll wait a day or two to see if I have better luck.

I got the New Pornographers 7" but there wasn't a download code inside. Pretty bummed about that, but I was able to grab a copy of David's Town as well so that makes up for it I guess.

Anyone who missed out on TY REX should check the Goner Records online store for the next few days. There were tons of copies in-store, and I doubt they'll sell out by the end of the day.

I thought I missed my chance on everything, since I'm visiting Seattle (actually in the airport to go home now) and the record store I chose to go to, Georgetown Records, didn't actually have any stuff. I bought some records from them, but as they're a mostly used shop they didn't get any special record store day records.  The super nice people there, though, gave me a bunch of swag and are shipping my records as well as stuff from Fantagraphics back home for me.

But then I totally scored Thee Oh Sees singles comp, a Davids Town, and a Moves single, from Everyday Music and Wall of Sound elsewhere in town. Sonic Boom was picked over, dry as a bone by noon.

I actually had heard a record store employee looking for a Davids Town with a customer--but then I found it in a bin they had not yet scoured. Dog eat dog world, my friend. But I had to make sure to ship it back to myself from a FedEx Kinko's, to keep it from falling into enemy hands.

I have a lot of forthcoming praise for the FOTs who gave me Seattle advice.

I didn't pick up any exclusives or new pressings or anything. But I got caught up on some stuff I was lacking like Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain by Pavement; In on the Kill Taker by Fugazi; and Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective.

I got my hands on a turntable last Tuesday, it was broken but I repaired it using scissors, super glue and tape. I wish my iPod was so easily fixed. Record Store Day marked the my first day of buying records and this is what I bagged...

For folks like me who missed the Ty Rex 12", Goner has it for sale on their website. Dunno how many they have or how long they'll last, so I'd suggest grabbing it now if you're interested.

I went to the Princeton Record Exchange and got...

Fucked Up - David's Town
Grinderman - Evil and Palaces of Montezuma
The New Pornographers - Moves
Superchunk/Coliseum split (yellow vinyl)
The White Stripes - Let's Shake Hands and Lafayette Blues

And while I was there I also picked up a cheap used copy of ABBA Gold, which was obviously worth every penny.

Paul, I got the New Pornographers and the Ty Segall.  I was at AKA.  Where'd you find the Big Star Third?  That was at the top of my list but AKA didn't have them.  This whole dumb holiday is a real scam and I just can't stop participating in it.  But I think this is the last year for me.  Besides, I'm in some record store somewhere at least once a week so they're getting my support through out the year.

I didn't get any exclusives. The Kate Bush Hounds of Love 10" (probably the only one in RI) had been sold by the time time I started my quest. I'm still sick about it.
What I did get:

The Rolling Stones Their Satanic Majesties Request/i] with the 3D cover. Some dummy tried to do the maze on the inside with a pen.
Mick Ronson Slaughter on 10th Avenue
UB40 Signing Off printed in West Germany
Kate Bush The Dreaming
'til tuesday Voices Carry '80s Rick would be proud

Late to the party but wanted to say that apparently Maine is the place to be for RSD as one of the founders of Record Store day is the owner of Maine's largest chain of music stores in the State. I was able to find everything I wanted.

Big Star - Third Test Pressing
Arthur Russell - World of Echoes (only 300 pressed and somehow maine got 9 that I could find)
Television - Live
Franz Ferdinand Covers EP
Daft Punk 10"
Husker Du/Green Day 7"
Built To Spill Ripple Single
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (was looking for the 45 RPM 2xLP version but accidentally got the regular version. Didn't know there were two versions released)
Gorillaz - The Fall
Fela Kuti 7"

Larger than expected haul. But I was happy and surprised to find so much of what I wanted. Definitely glad I didn't drive down to Boston like I was thinking as everybody else I know had a lot of trouble finding even half of what I listed.

Circle - Manner LP
Mariachi El Bronx / Bronx - Live split EP
White Hills - White Hills LP [I don't think this is an official RSD release, but the store had it in the area with the RSD releases so I nabbed it]
Feist / Mastodon - Feistodon split 7"
Flaming Lips / Mastodon - A Spoonful Weighs A Ton split 7" (Side By Side series) [Mastodon did a meet & greet at the store on Thursday. The store had them sign the vinyl sleeve the single came in]
MC5 / Afrika Bambaataa - Kick Out The Jams split 7" (Side By Side series)
The Mynabirds - Generals 7"
Nobunny - Maximumrockandroll 7"
Otis Redding / Aretha Franklin - Respect split 7" (Side By Side series)
Mikal Cronin / Apache Dropout / The Paperhead / The Liminanas - 4-Way Covers split 7"

EDIT: I checked on the White Hills LP. Not a RSD release.

There's nothing I ever care too much about owning, so I stayed home.  I'll drop some money at Amoeba and Recycled tomorrow when the mayhem is over.

I've moved all my records 4 times now which has SUCKED, and my cats like to scratch the spines and paw at my turntable when I play them.  Collector nerd years = OVER! ;D

I had too many chores to do to get anything good at the record store by my house. But I did get to see Jesse Malin (of D Generation and 80s hardcore band Heart Attack) BRING IT during an in-store set. It was really great. He ended by doing some covers, including "Death Or Glory" that had the whole crowd singing along, including parents with little kids.

The Spinto Band were the headlining act. I don't know how much cachet they have outside of the Delaware Valley but they're very good. They have a little bit of an REM/Talking Heads/random indie pop twee in them. They're releasing a new album in a few weeks and the songs were all very good.

I did pick up Big Star's Radio City on the way out. I don't have it on vinyl.

This was by far the best RSD 2012 release, and I haven't seen any chatter about it anywhere! Truly sickening!  Michael Sniper and the rest of the Captured Tracks foot soldiers have delivered a glorious box. (Shot Forth ... and The Buried Life are available separately.)

I heard that Jack White released a 7" filled with Blue Raspberry Faygo.  Is that true?

I didn't make it to RSD but Darren from work (aka Husband of the Puppetress) told me Amoeba had a copy of my long-time want, Steve Walsh's Schemer Dreamer! So I went on Sunday and picked it up for $1.99. It's going in a frame on my wall because it's the best record cover ever.

Is that the Steve Walsh that's vocalist for Kansas?

Yeah, Steve Walsh from Kansas! Having only heard "Carry On" and "Dust in the Wind" on the radio for  a million years I had never heard that Steve Walsh was a total fucking maniac. You owe it to yourself to watch this video of Steve with Kansas totally destroying Carry On.

1. Short shorts/No shirt
2. Knee high socks
3. High kicks
4. KEYBOARD HANDSTAND
5. bongo fury

The beardo in a tuxedo is just icing on the cake at that point.

STEVE WALSH: HERO FOR EVER!

Wow!

How coked-up do you think he was? Also, were he and The Ultimate Warrior separated at birth?

Thank for sharing that. Now my quest for that album begins.

Answer: very coked.

Here is one of my favorite Steve Walsh quotes, in response to Kansas "selling out":

"Once upon a time we were young. We made records, and we were good. We had each other, and very little else. Luck played it's fickle roll by annointing us with fame and fortune, and we loved it. BUT, the music that Kerry wrote was from his heart, and not about the money, and is to this day-timeless. Over the years, we seemed like we went out of our way to confuse our loyal fans, and truly some if not most of our fans did wander away. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky, but we soldiered on with the fans that are still very loyal and caring. As our record sales dwindled, we were forced to take riskier gigs, and make recordings in a new and more economical way, because we had to. What was once all about KANSAS, is now about our individual lives, and the lives of our families. There's no turning back to the days when we headlined huge concert arenas and had elaborate light shows. We still do the best we can, and I happen to think we're still pretty good. But the fact remains, that our lives have changed. The record business has changed. And we now are forced to do things differently-because at 55 years old, we are an albatross. So hold this Subaru commercial against us if you must, but know that at some point in everyone's life, it has to be about a lot more than personal integrity and pride, and the money we earn from the sale of our beloved "Dust", will buy one more roll of toilet paper that will wipe the asses of the ones we love."

Well, my mail-ordered copy of the Unrest 7" box arrived today, and it's really a beautifully packaged set. Mark Robinson even included a hand-written thank you note.

Still haven't snagged a copy of the St. Vincent 7" I was wanting. It looks like most of the Ebay auctions are starting at $25. Eh, might just chalk that one up as a loss.

I added JEFF The Brotherhood's "Upstairs At United" and the Tomahawk boxed set to my haul today. The shop I go to didn't get the Tomahawk set in until Thursday. It was only $40, too. Not bad for three 12" LPs. The shop has leftovers on some of the RSD releases. Mostly stuff by acts I've never heard of.

@danner: Wait a couple of months and you can probably find that St. Vincent 7" on eBay for significantly less than what it's going for now.

I'm seeing her live in a few weeks, so I'm holding out some hope that maybe she'll have a copy or two at her merch table.
