Title: Which athletes best display the spirit of the Best Show.
Post by: dcgut on April 19, 2011, 12:29:15 AM
Since I mosty watch hockey I'll say Mike Bossy. Perhaps the greaster scorer of all time. Holds the current record for nine straight seasons with 50 + goals, similar to Tom's 10 year reign at WFMU. Played his entire career with the NYI, just like Tom is loyal to FMU.

My vote is for Kevin Durant. Classy, professional, doesn't get the respect he deserves from the media, and damn good at what he does.

Who was that scrappy Rudy guy that played for Notre Dame? I forget his last name, but he had heart.

I think John Starks is close. Secretariat should be considered.

For the Mike Show, it is either Keith Hernandez (aka the Prince of Darkness) or Jake the Snake Roberts.

Bossy is a great choice. His shot was laser accurate and quick, not unlike Tom's GOMP trigger finger.

Plus he was a humble dude and a winner....(cue 'awwwwwsss' now).

I grew up on Long Island and loved Mike Bossy but when it comes to embodying the spirit of the Best show it's John Starks all the way. If there was a Best Show sports hall of fame Starks would be in, no doubt about it. Starks was a guy nobody wanted who fought his way to being a starting shooting guard in the NBA.  To anyone who tries to knock John Starks by bringing up game 7 of the 94 series...I'll treat you like Tom would treat the Zodiac Killer.

Meant to mention for the Mike show it would easily be Dock Ellis for Mike, and perhaps Steffi Graf for Ms. Therese?

There is a lot of truth to this statement. I've always really loved the guy. I have fond memories of watching a young John Starks play for the Cedar Rapids Silver Bullets as a kid.

I went w/ KD on my first ever call into The Best Show. As Tom put it: I score all the points!

I also nominate "The Red Rocket" Matt Bonner, for his really bizarre comedy videos on the San Antonio Spurs website, and someone Tom patters his game off of.

I was going to suggest this yesterday, even before Tom made the Bugs Bunny comparison last night. The athlete who best displays the spirit of The Best Show is Delonte West:

Quote
“Bugs Bunny is the smoothest dude I ever met. You know he be chillin' like it just be a normal day and he- it be cold just like how it is in Boston and he just want to dive in the ground, pop up, he be like oh man this ain't Albuquerque. Thats got to be the tightest life you just hop underneath the ground and go! No traffic, no Mass pike, no tolls, no taking Yankee hats off- just underneath the ground...BAM...carrots...Albuquerque. It might seem crazy to you but it's just a different way of expressing myself. I think it's kind of freaky.”

That's the Tom part of the show. And West driving around the city with a shotgun in a guitar case represents the callers, both Newbridge-based and otherwise. I bet you Delonte would be all over burning Christmas trees if anyone ever introduced him to the idea.

Anything that may or may not have happened with LeBron's mom could represent the Mike part of the show.

Don't forget the incident where Delonte was driving around on a moped on a DC-area interstate carrying several shotguns.

Delonte's actually a bit of a tragic figure. He suffers from bi-polar disorder which has contributed to at least a few of his troubling activities. I also knew a few kids who went to St. Joe's when he was there, as part of the most absurdly talented backcourt I ever saw in person on the college level. He wasn't too big of a fan of basketball and the pressures that came with it and did no socializing with the rest of the team. He took a ton of art classes and was supposedly pretty talented at graffiti and that style of art.

Perhaps I romanticize the 1994 Rangers a bit (much as I do with The Best Show), but I have to go with Mark Messier.  He was not afraid to be bold, and he delivered on his promise...in epic fashion.
