Hey y'all. I'm gonna be in NYC May 2-5th. My wife's speaking at a conference and I'll have the city to myself during the day for a couple days. I'll be staying right between Washington Square Park and Union Square. I'd love some recommendations on cheap to free stuff to do. Thank you kindly.

Some of my favorite cheap/free/odd/good eatin' NYC places are:
The Cloisters
Roosevelt Island
The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve/Jacob Riis Park
Brighton Beach/Coney Island, which might not have been destroyed yet
Walking or biking over any of the three bridges between Manhattan and Brooklyn
Most of the museums have a "suggested donation" policy and if you're not vain about it, the counter people are usually very cool about it
PS1 in Long Island City, Queens (weather permitting)
The Brooklyn Flea, right down the street from my home
Arthur Avenue in the Bronx
The Staten Island Ferry
Battery Park
I'm not sure when Governor's Island opens up, but it's pretty incredible
A visit to WFMU in Jersey City
The Chinese food court in Flushing, Queens
Brooklyn's Chinatown
Indian food in Jackson Heights, Queens
Interesting cheap theater or performance art at PS122 or The Kitchen, or sometimes Joe's Pub

Just spitballin' here:
Free Picasso exhibit here during your stay:

The High Line is cool... it's a disused elevated train line, now a walking park/garden through Chelsea:

Thanks, dudes ("dudes" being a sexually ambiguous term)!

There's a semi-hidden in the east village my gf and I like to walk around-

The LES tenement museum is great.
Trinity Church but equally cool is to walk around the side and you see Alexander Hamilton's grave right from the street. Kinda cool and a unique photo opp.
A church that is actually called The Little Church Around the Corner - http://littlechurch.org/history.html (http://littlechurch.org/history.html) - fun old timey interior
The Staten Island ferry is free there and back and a good way to see the city from the water if you have an hour to kill.
St. Marks Place hotel where interview portions of GG Allin: Hated were filmed.
Agree with Highline. I would go during the day and at night if you get a chance.
Visit Frank in Weehawken in Weehawken.

Swinging through Knoxville on the way back? Cause I've got some secret lodges I want to show you.

Gonna be up this weekend and would welcome any other tips about events or things to do not mentioned upthread. I'm already going to the Sunday night show at UCB. I see the Atlantic Antic, which I've heard of via Paul's Boutique, is this Sunday. Worth checking out?
-
Atlantic Antic is a street fair. Occasionally it has some good things on it. The Art Walk in June is better. So if you're already in the neighborhood and want a good walk, do it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
Louis CK is doing two shows at The Bell House on Friday. Tickets go on sale on Friday, so it will be a mad dash to refresh browser.
If you're feeling artsy fartsy and want some tickets to MoMA left for you, drop me a line.

Dan Melchior is also playing, at the Cake Shop and Issue Project Room. And I'm actually around for once in my life if any FOT wants to plan a get-together -- my wife and kid are going to Indiana and right now my plan is to get depressed, eat myself into a stupor, and pass out under a table like in that episode of Louie.

Great call, Sir Melchior is great live. Wish it woulda fell during my time in the city.
-
Sadly, I won't be in until Saturday, otherwise I'd go see Melchior.
-
I think Issue Project Room is Saturday. I'm not sure which one I'm seeing. Maybe both.
-
You raising Cain, Grote?
-
You could go occupy Wall Street.

I was a Perry man, but now that Herman's got Dennis Miller's endorsement, I'm on board.

Well, I agree it's sad that they are going to Indiana, but I wouldn't take it THAT hard.

Miller never lies and he's always right.

I have an extra ticket to the UCB ASSSSCAT show Sunday at 7:30 if anyone wants it. Look for me there, I look just like my avatar.
-
I'll meet you there if nobody else has claimed it yet.
