Is there anyway to see a week by week frequently updated playlist of what Tom plays on the Best Show? I can never listen live so I listen to the podcast but still want to check out the music Tom plays.
And if there is no place, want to make this thread become that?
-
I'm sure you're aware of this, but they streaming shows on the archive have the music intact. Just mentioning it on the odd chance you weren't.
Still, this is a good idea for a thread. I'm too lazy to do it, though.
-
Here's this week's playlist -
5.24.11
White Stripes - There's No Home For You Here
Thee Oh Sees - The Whipping Continues
Red Crayola - Hurricane Fighter Plane
Black Flag - Can't Decide (1982 demo)
Queen-Don't Stop Me Now
And later on:
Young Governor - Old Hat
-
It's petty to complain about DJ's taking their time to post playlists on a FREE station but I am sometimes disappointed when I have to listen to a Music to Spazz By set without a playlist. I can NEVER remember when DJs list tracks.
-
Thanks, samir! The name of the Young Governor song is what in particular I was looking for. I kept looking for it at the beginning when Tom was running down the playlist and got confused.

Anyone know where one can get this Black Sabbath Alternate Takes LP that Tom's been playing?
They put out remastered versions of a lot of the earlier stuff on cd, with a second disc of songs with throwaway vocal tracks, alternate takes, and stuff like that.

A while ago, I started trying to do logs of old Best Shows from 2000 forward. I got to about mid 2003 before other stuff intervened, although I hope to pick it back up at some point. In any case, each log contains a list of the music played in the show, if you're into that sort of thing.

FOTs,
I have created a collaborative Spotify playlist, using the listings in this thread.
The tracks are organized by order of play within each episode.
http://open.spotify.com/user/123010029/playlist/6yBIcBhUX3zQ0DhxIhVpb3 (http://open.spotify.com/user/123010029/playlist/6yBIcBhUX3zQ0DhxIhVpb3)
Since it's a collaborative playlist, anyone can add tracks to it. So if you want to add tracks from older episodes or if I haven't added the latest episode's songs, you are more than welcome to add them to the playlist!
Enjoy!
--Amedeo
PS. I've been keeping a list of songs which I either couldn't find on Spotify, or that I used an alternate version of (if, for example, I couldn't find the demo version of a song). If someone can explain to me how to collapse text here, I'll add the list to this post (don't want to clog up the thread).

Snapped up a copy of that STP 7" off Discogs after hearing Tom play it yesterday. HOT STUFF
-
I saw MrGtD mention this in the chat. I've been meaning to compile my own playlist for some time using the ~450 shows that I've collected. I don't use Spotify, but I'd be happy to add to a public playlist as I make my way through. For starters, here's Jan 3, 2006. Mistakes are likely.
Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox - Guided by Voices - Propeller
Barricade - Volcano Suns - Thing of Beauty
Ode to a Black Man - The Dirtbombs - Ultraglide in Black
Radio Ready - The Pooh Sticks - Formula One Generation
Ballad of El Goodo - Big Star - #1 Record

The Story of Jazz - Yo La Tengo - Prisoners of Love
10:1 - Rogue Wave - 10:1
The Land of Light - Cafe con Leche - The Spanish Trip
My Obsession - Rolling Stones - Between the Buttons (UK)
-
10:1 - Rogue Wave - 10:1
A classic moment. This was one of the first few shows I "recapped," although the early ones were more like blog posts trying to sell people on the show. I described it thusly:
-----
The interview with relaxation guru Gregor McWilliams (starts at 1:58) is one of the most disturbing Best Show calls I've heard and another masterful use of the slow-burn twist technique that marks such classics as "Darren from Work" and "Timmy von Trimble". Gregor's initial attempt to test his dubious skills via the radio are derailed when he uses a parade of Republican politicians (Rumsfeld, an owl that looks like Reagan, etc.) as vessels of relaxation for Tom. Then, we gradually get a more revealing portrait of Gregor's troubled cosmus: his legal troubles over providing female patients with his "Rainbow Elixir" potion (i.e., Knob Creek bourbon), a troubled childhood that included driving the family car through his parent's bedroom because they would not allow him to see David Cronenberg's Rabid, and ends with Gregor in fully-demented, Dream Warrior mode commanding Tom to murder Mike the Call Screener in his name in order to remove the bloodlusty demon bears that he had previously implanted in Tom's dreamscape.
The finale: Gregor's piercing cries of "KILL"---->Click---->immediate throw to Rogue Wave's "10:1". Brilliant.
-----
The Best Show in 2006 is untouchable. The greatest run in radio history.
-
Off-topic: Just a stretch of an association, but Tom played Cornfield by the Volcano Suns (the last song before Wurster came on). And yet, Gregor (Wurster) sounds a lot like the American Buddhist Jack Kornfield, who was used by Joe Frank in his radio monologues (ironically, I think). Tom has taken some stabs at Joe Frank before, so he's heard it. Again, a stretch.
I'd like to add more playlists, just not sure where. I'd rather stay away from things like Spotify, though I have nothing against it. Perhaps a public Google Spreadsheet?

I don't know what he played but I do know that it was TOTALLY AWESOME. "In My Time Of Dying" I hadn't heard in a long while, so rocking. Then I found myself laughing at the end, when after like a 10 minute super heavy song then Robert Plant finally starts making orgasm noises. It was almost as if he thought "oh i forgot to make my orgasm noises this whole time, i'll just tack them on the end!"

TREX-BUICK MACKANE
BLACK FLAG-RISE ABOVE
THE SWEET-ACTION
(SECOND SET)
ALLAH-LAS-SANDY
TY SEGALL-WOULD YOU BE MY LOVE
The transition from AC Newman to T.Rex to Black Flag was a resplendent emotional roller-coaster. When describing AC's album Shut Down the Streets Tom said "if you're sad it'll make you happy or it'll make you sadder." Well, I have to admit I've been feeling down for quite a while and "I'm not talking" made me cry it was so beautiful, especially that amazing clarinet hook. So yes it did in fact make me feel better. That punch in the gut was swiftly followed with a kick to the face with the super sweet guitar lick in T.Rex's "Buick Mackane", and after that the primal rage of Rollins and Black Flag beckoned us all to burn it down.
So in a span of three songs I felt happy just to be alive, that I possessed the power to conquer the world and later that I should just destroy it.
Bravo Tom.
-
Hello! Long time listener, first time boarder. Does anyone know what the first song played on November the 20th was? It was the song before Von LMO & Tom didn't say what it was unless I missed him doing it somehow.
I ask because IT WAS GREAT
thanks in advance!
-
Tom playing Bowie and not just that, but "Time" (12/18/12? Didn't know he was a fan, and that's a real deep cut there....
-
If anybody is listening to the 12/4/12 show and can list what I played on this thread that would be awesome. I have to list the songs for RIAA reporting purposes but that particular episode makes me want to jump off a roof.
Thanks!

Apparently some dude JUST added over 100 songs to the editable Spotify playlist that I made back in 2011 for the musical sets played during The Best Show. Didn't think anyone was even looking at it anymore, BUT I GUESS I WAS WRONG. You can find it here: http://open.spotify.com/user/123010029/playlist/6yBIcBhUX3zQ0DhxIhVpb3

No idea if these are in any particular order, since they appear to have been added all at once. If anyone feels like going through them to check and reorder FEEL FREE TO DO SO! I will not stop you.
And thanks to "James M.," whom/where ever you may be.
-
I am listening to the shows in order from the beginning and am really hoping someone can point me to playlists from the earliest shows? Thanks!
-
Some other dude named Jared has an almost 1200 song playlist that's still being updated of just the WFMU show's playlists. https://open.spotify.com/user/1224693779/playlist/32dyqfv10Vh3R5WTkJxP7E

I don't want to start a new thread for this so I guess I'll just ask this here, but can anyone tell me what the song at the end of the 8/18/2009 show? (https://wfmu.org/flashplayer.php?version=2&show=32631&archive=54945) It's at the last 4 or so minutes of the show. There's a refrain of "eat your pie before you die" and googling the lyrics is coming up with nothing.
-
It's called "Pop It" by Herman Brood & His Wild Romance. It was the first song of Evan "Funk" Davies' show that night. You can listen to the whole show here - http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/32630 (http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/32630)
-
Ah! That makes sense. Thanks!
-
Herman Brood has/had traction in the US? Good to know.
-
Sadly not enough for me to find a copy of this song anywhere online, other than on that stream of The Evan "Funk" Davies Show. I guess I need to fork over 20 bucks to buy a hard copy of the album.

I'm a fan, I love this song, Saturday Night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mEjmWnihrc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mEjmWnihrc)
But yeah, you almost never see his records in the shops, though if you watch John Carpenter's "Prince Of Darkness" you'll see a giant Herman Brood cutout in the record shop that they run through trying to get away from demon zombies.

Nice, love that song too. His biggest hit.
I should watch that movie sometimes. Also because it's the only John Carpenter '80s movie I haven't seen yet.
-
I found out about him via a movie called Cha Cha. You can view the trailer [NSFW due to a cameo from Herman's wedding tackle] here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7TSunodF50).
-
I saw a play about him and Nina Hagen once. Can't remember if it was really all that good, except for liking the performance of a friend of mine as Hagen, including musical performances.

Carpenter's Prince of Darkness is not so good except for the Herman Brood cardboard cameo. Oh, also Alice Cooper murders someone by stabbing them with a bike. Such a Wurster way to die!
-
The first hour or so of Prince of Darkness are amazing, then the third act sinks it. But I am having trouble remembering where there's a record store in the movie? Doesn't everything after the first 15 minutes happen in an old church?

Oh I might have confused Prince Of Darkness with the Village of the Damned remake which I saw on the same day? SHAZBOT!!!
Oh well, if you are looking for a cardboard cutout of Herman Brood in a movie then I suggest watching both of these not-so-great movies back to back!
