Is this show a piece of crap or what? I managed to get maybe 4 episodes in, and it just appears to be so bad that I can't continue watching it. However, I might just have a short attention span.
I really, really want there to be a historical drama-type show as good as Rome, but they have been serially disappointing. (See also The Tudors.)

I hated the Tudors because of many things, but ultimately I just couldn't get past the historical inaccuracies. I think that makes me "wrong."

I know you folks recently (ish) rejected the teaching of evolution, but surely there's some mechanism in Tennessee to demarcate the difference between historical fiction and stuff entirely out of S. Spielberg's head.
Gladiator is my least favorite movie of all time for the same reason I hate the Tudors, and for how on-the-nose it was to call the main character "Maximus" for American audiences. Thumbs down. As it were.

There are historical inaccuracies and then there are historical inaccuracies. Rome is full of them, but they mostly consist of reasonable compression of events and timelines or are just small mistakes (e.g. Cato wearing a black toga earlier than he should). Or characters might appear older or younger than they should. As long as you keep the general story of what happened right, and the general sketch of a character right, I don't think most people care.
What made the Tudors unwatchable, and what afflicts The Borgias to a lesser degree, is really bad acting and boring storytelling. Also, making historical figures look like pouty modern models.

I saw the thread title and I was reminded of this:

My board replies were outsourced years ago.

If you are looking for a show like Rome that is historically accurate you should be watching Spartacus.
I kid.

I, Claudius is a mini-series (though a pretty long one) rather than a TV series, but it fits the bill for "historical drama as good as Rome." And Game of Thrones, though it's fantasy rather than history, is a better medieval political drama than most shows and movies based on real medieval history.
-
I, Claudius is great, but it doesn't have the whole package.
I mean, it's well-written and well-acted but Rome has all of that plus really good costumes, sets, little historical detail grace notes, etc.
I've been meaning to watch Game of Thrones. I waited until it was over to see if people still liked it. They do.

Well, he was the Pope of sub-G-rated comedy.
