In which parallell universe is Donna Summer rock and roll? The very fact that the Rock and Roll Hall of fame exists in an indictment of.... well....everything.

In which parallell universe is Donna Summer rock and roll?

The same one that Aretha Franklin is? Or Billy Joel?

That is seriously my least favorite argument in the world, as though "I Feel Love" is less "rock'n'roll" than dumb old "Piano Man". I heard enough of that complaining when hip hop acts started getting inducted, and it was just as irritating when people whined about ABBA getting in. Hell, I say the more crusty old Stevie Van Zandt types go on complaining about the sanctity of "real" rock being violated by this sort of thing, the more straight-up pop and rap acts should get inducted. I can't wait for the ballot where every single member of the Wu-Tang Clan is nominated individually.

Oh man, Rush is the Susan Lucci of the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.

I would get into the 'why isn't ___ on the list', but I don't know who's already in there.

Every year people complain about the inductees of the rock and roll hall of fame and all it does is give the institution some kind of notoriety that they don't really deserve. I've been to the R&R HoF and it was fun and they had some cool stuff but why not just call it a rock and roll history museum and skip all this induction bullcrap?

I would love to see a Giorgio Moroder exhibit in a museum that showed pictures of Giorgio Moroder and his machines and Donna Summer and whatever else. Moroder's funny pants. The remnants of his moustache.

I hear you, mostlymeat. I shouldn't pay attention at all but I can't help it!

For me the big joke (apart from awards in general) is not what is or isn't 'rock and roll', rather it's who's influential, inventive, great, talented, etc. In other words, music would be different if the band or person never existed.

Like, I don't really enjoy Guns 'n Roses, but it's undeniable how metal/hard rock/whatever took a huge turn once they came along. Same thing with the Cure. I haven't been able to listen to the Cure without shuddering since I was maybe 13, but again, I think pretty fucking influential. The one on this list that makes me crazy is the fucking Red Hot Chili Peppers. All their songs sound the same, and for all their mugging and monkeying around, the band has no personality at all.

Now technically, in order to be nominated you have to have put a record out at least 25 years previous to that - RHCP formed in '83 and 1st record was '85. I wiki'ed it. So, other musicians established in '83:

Nick Cave & Bad Seeds
Flaming Lips
Jesus & Mary Chain

'84: Dino Jr
'85: Gang Starr

Kinda burned out looking at band lists right about there. Lots of bands formed earlier haven't hit the list too.

What people should really be upset about is that Sly Stone lives out of his car now.

Beastie Boys
The Cure
Donovan
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns N’ Roses
Heart
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
Freddie King
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rufus with Chaka Khan
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Donna Summer
War

That wouldn't be a bad class, actually.

Once again, though, The Monkees were snubbed. And that in and of itself invalidates the RRHOF's existence.

Once again, though, The Monkees were snubbed. And that in and of itself invalidates the RRHOF's existence.

Not fictional enough. Fictional bands that are 25 years or older:

Spinal Tap
The Archies
Josie and the Pussycats
... and some kind of Flinstones-related project, I can't remember right now ... y'all can google it if yr so inclined. And I seem to recall the Munsters having a Beatles-ish band on one of their episodes.

Have these people even been nominated?

New York Dolls
Big Star
Devo
Kraftwerk

... and keep in mind:

I think Old Skull will be eligible for nomination three or four years from now.

Beastie Boys
The Cure
Donovan
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns N’ Roses
Heart
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
Freddie King
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rufus with Chaka Khan
The Small Faces/The Faces

I feel about the RRHOF the same way I do about the Oscars.  They're ridiculous, they're founded on a bad idea (artists in competition), they serve nobody's interest except the industry's, and the relationship between their seal of approval and actual quality or significance is next to random. Consequently, although I understand the temptation and have succumbed to it at times, it really doesn't make much sense either to root for your faves to make it in or to care about the injustice of certain people who've made it.  But then, I strive to be a robot with no human feelings.

I'm not arguing that Donna Summer isn't rock and so much as I'm arguing that a Hall of Fame isn't rock and roll. Anybody in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (TM) is automatically not very rock and roll to me. If I want shrink-wrapped rebellion I'll go to the mall and shop at Hot Topic.

The only joy to be had with the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is speculating which members of bands will be allowed on stage in bands where members hate each other and/or have been fired by fellow band members; speculating who will induct the eventual nominees and trying to guess what songs the inductees will play and how badly they'll play them. If you stick to these topics, you can enjoy the HOF without addressing any of the many reasons why it's terrible.

When Van Halen was announced, I was very caught up in the possibilities of who they'd let on stage and which one of them might say something insane(Dave) or terrible (Dave/Eddie/Alex) or stupid (everyone ever involved in the band) or about tobasco sauce (Michael Anthony) or incomprehinsible(Dave/Eddie/Sammy) or if someone was finished with their meal yet (Gary, presumably attending as a waiter). GNR has the potential to be even more interesting, and KISS is the ultimate train wreck in waiting.

I want Donovan to go in this year because I think he'd try to get Paul McCartney to induct him, but would have to settle for either Mike Love (who continues to hold the top spot for the most insane Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame appearance) or maybe David Lynch, who I'd like to see induct Donovan in character as Gordon Cole.

And there's always the recurring situation where they can't find anybody suitable to do an induction speech for someone, so they either hit 1 (Bono) or 2 (Kid Rock) on the induction speech speed dial.

I mostly agree with this argument in general, and more specifically because it's the best rationale for considering Yes, who I think deserves to be in for the same reason as Devo; they drove entire scenes into public awareness. And every incarnation of Peter Gabriel ought to be in there several times over.

I hear you, mostlymeat. I shouldn't pay attention at all but I can't help it!
