Very positive article with some good photos! Surprised so see Spin do anything decent these days..

So, we're at the point now with Jon, where we can say he's on that weird anti-aging drug all rockers seem to do, right? Full head of hair? Slim? Wrinkle-free? How do (most) musicians do it?
-
YOGA!
-
I had no idea Jon was a stutterer. I find that to be kind of inspiring.
-
It's a great writeup. Somehow, it popped up in the "Paul F Tompkins" section of my google news page.
I don't even recall making a Paul F Tompkins section.
-
As a relatively new listener (only 4 years or so) I really appreciate these "background story" stories. The AVClub interview was good too.
I didn't even know they still made Spin. I am getting 90s retro really bad now.
-
does anyone know what the name of Tom's music only show he did on WFMU was?
-
Tom will probably take this the wrong way, but isn't he looking pretty svelte nowadays?

Same here, listening to his calls on the show, I have trouble believing it! He is very composed on the radio, and has such a natural, conversational flow.

Having read this article, and having listened to a number of podcasts wherein "the origin story" is recounted, I'm really curious about the pre-Best Show Scharpling doings, too. Does anyone have any tapes or mp3s or other audio files of Tom's old show(s), whatever its name was? Besides 'Rock Rot & Rule," that is. (Of course, if Tom wants to let that stuff go unheard, that's cool too. I'll respect his wishes. Just curious.)

I was suprised too, but now listening to it you can kind of hear it in spots. Then again if I was on the radio I would be completely bumbling over every other word.

My ladyfriend made some sort of cat-like sound when she saw the photos. Please note I'd probably drop a cool $50 for that Flyers t-shirt.

This is my experience, as well. It's a remarkable thing for a self-described "lifelong stutterer" to become known for his smooth delivery and total recall during 45 minute weekly radio calls.

Tom is looking rather chiseled.
I think you have to get the Eagles hat with the Flyers shirt (which is awesome). The marriage of the green and the orange are what makes the ensemble such a visual treat. I expect to see more Philadelphians copy this look.

Expect? Entire neighborhoods (including my own) wear that like a uniform.

There are a lot of stutterers who get through the problem by acting. Emily Blount supposedly could barely speak when she was a girl and then she got through it by speaking in an accent in a role in a school play.
Also: GREAT article. Tom and Jon remind me of a cool older cousin and his best friend when they're hanging out and doing dumb, funny stuff.

The print version came today, and the photo on the scooter is sweet. A simple line drawing of that on a hoodie would make some fabulous top-drawer premium prize.

Let's stop dancing around it; they're both totally teh cutez. I mean, c'mon: they wear PF Flyers/lowtop Chucks non stop, plus teeshirts & pants with 30" inseams even though they're both at least 6ft, and it looks like neither of them ever brush their hair. The men don't know, but the [little] girls understand.
Never mind that scooter, the pic that makes me laugh every time I see it is:

Just in case you wanted a single image to show anyone who wondered what the show was like.

Yes. That is it exactly and it makes me happy that it exists.

Here's the enigmatic Smash AKA Asher Benrubi kicking it with his bros
Guns N Roses on Headbangers Ball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oLhlcJgasU#)

Woah, so Smash's son was "Kube" on "Parker Lewis Can't Lose?"
circles within circles!
-
He IS Classic Rock radio come to MTV.
Those guys had lightning in a bottle for about 5 minutes. I wonder if they had any idea what was going to happen?
-
Smash really does drop "... and the boys" when referring to band line-ups! If anything, this proves that S&W have astonishing pop culture memories.
-
That Smash video is great. My favorite part is around 3:30, where Steven Adler starts banging his hubcap on the ground out of sheer boredom.
I picked up a copy of SPIN yesterday. This is the first time I've paid for a physical copy of Spin Magazine in ... a decade? Maybe even two decades?
It's great. I like DR* ... I like the Best Show, I like Patton, I like the Best Show and I like Eddie Pepitone. Nice to see them all getting proper respect.
The Das Racist article was pretty good ... comedian Hari Kondabalu gets off some good zingers about his brother Dap, and I also liked his line about doing a show at the Sasquatch festival: "My set went better than expected, considering I was performing in front of many white people who had no issue wearing Native American headdresses and face paint and didn't even have the decency to finish off the impression by being unjustifiably killed".
(*DR = Das Racist and/or Depravity's Rainbow. Although I don't think Depravity's Rainbow got mentioned in SPIN. That's okay though ... Mr. Fogelnest had a lot of territory to cover in a small amount of space, and he did a pretty good job of it).

It's "King Kube." SHOW SOME RESPECT!!!

This is my first post. I hope it is a good one:
Roadmaster - Who Can Sing Like Fat Boy Do (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAROabfLX8o&feature=related#)
I remember the Smash from my early adolescence in the greater Baltimore area -- he was drive time on 98 Rock, I think. Had an amusing theme song "Smash, smash/Dig the Smash/Smash, Smash/I'm digging the Smash".
