Title: MP3 Archive
Post by: smirky on December 12, 2011, 08:54:31 PM
Hi everybody.

I've only been listening to the Best Show for a few months and have already run out of episodes to download. Aside from the WFMU podcast page, is there somewhere else I can go to download more Best Show episodes in mp3 format? Sorry if this question has been posted a million times, I just need to know because I'm running out of episodes!

Thanks

Nope. You can monkey around with converting Real Audio to MP3 though.

And for the gap after the downloadable Real Audio files expire you can record the Flash streams. Could be tricky but should be possible. There are lots of self-help pages on the net for that, just search for "record flash streams" or something like that.

I admit that I never bothered to do that myself, even though I would love to have Best Show episodes to carry arround on an MP3 player.

There's also a download out there called "Real Alternative", which lets you play Real Audio files without downloading the horror that is Real Player.

I wrote a script to download all of the Real Audio archives and covert them to MP3 automatically but I don't think I have it anymore. It's not that difficult though.

I know there's a torrent out there somewhere but it's currently dead.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll have to stream for now, until there's mp3s of all the shows.

In case you did not know: MP3s get automatically purged from the archives after a certain time. And it's highly unlikely that WFMU will go back and make complete MP3s archives that had got purged available again. According to station manager Ken Freedman, they switched to Flash streams because the MP3 downloads were too taxing on their servers' bandwidth.

tl;dr: Download MP3s from WFMU while you still can.
