For your consideration Mr. Scharpling, sticking with AC/DC...instead of the long "Live Wire" how about IF YOU WANT BLOOD YOU GOT IT. Talk about a fightin' song! It also calls out all who want a tussle...those miscreant journalists, podcasters, and trolls who call in. It's a minute and a 1/2 shorter and it moves right along. I think the lyrics reflect the Best Show fightin' spirit...

Here's an idea. Each week, pick one Lou Reed song at random, and pick one Metallica song at random, and play them at the same time.
-
OK, not tried this before, let's see if I can do it.
My suggestion for theme song 2012..
The Bags - We will bury you (1978) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwE8WJw0jNk&feature=related#)
-
999 : No Pity : AUDIO Punk Vinyl. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY_eVBazngc#)

A bevy of themes by Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo.
Consider this- a defiant anthem of ultimate triumph:

A warning to all not to underestimate you or the show. This is an obscure gem. It could be ALL yours.

I held off on calling the show with this suggestion.
It's likely too tounge in cheek and unable to be stomached for multiple weeks.
But a week ago, my wife and I were laughing about the use of the Dropkick Murphy's song ,
"I'm Shipping up to Boston" in 'The Departed'.
It has the punch in the face quality you were speaking of.
But it is also pretty ridiculous.
Maybe more in line with the Mike Show.
But Tom, 'I LOST MY LEG'.
-
I'd like to suggest Minor Threat's Seeing Red. It would kick off the show in that rowdy, rampageous way you're looking for, and in just sixty-three seconds. I prefer the first demo tape version, it's screamier.
I'm new to the forum, but a habitual listener. Thanks for the great show this week.

The more I think about this, the more I think that some version of "Good Guys Don't Wear White" would be the perfect Best Show theme song. It's a perfect Joe Lunchpail anthem that avoids any hint of gurgy classic rock-ism (not that there's anything wrong with glurgy classic rock).
The original Standells version might be a little bit to droopy:
The Standells - Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwE4OPwer1Y#)
But the Minor Threat version kicks ass, and would be a funny counterpoint to Rollins covering the Pink Fairies:
Minor Threat - Good Guys (Don't Wear White) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yTScP163rE#)
-
I am assuming Superchunk is off the table? too bad... I think Precision Auto would be a great start to the show.
-
Your Phone's Off The Hook, But You're Not
-
I had to break my three-year lurking status to post a possible theme song.
Wake Up! by Les Savy Fav
http://cellfortyfour.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/04-wake-up.mp3 (http://cellfortyfour.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/04-wake-up.mp3)
It starts sparsely, but still powerfully, and really picks up around the 50 second mark. And the last minute is especially "punch you in the throat" intense.
Also while the lyrics can be kind of murky, they can easily be seen as a warning or a call to action.

This seems like a good choice.

Lyrically I have no idea what it means, but the energy of this has Tom written all over it
Blue Oyster Cult - The Red And The Black (with lyrics) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLTxGdM7SFk&feature=fvsr#)
This too. Right Omar?
King's X - The World Around Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmETRAr7UQo#ws)
Or this. And lyrically it makes more sense. You could even jettison the Peter Gunn intro of it was too long, but dear GOD don't jettison the Peter Gunn intro
Cheap Trick - On Top of the World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X-Sr3ToBEo#)
Or this?
Jellyfish-Joining a Fan Club (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JojV8kNfWK8#)
Or this version
Puffy AmiYumi - Joining A Fanclub (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB3bbdngYQM#)
Sorry, I guess, wanted to share some tunes.
-
I wanna destroy you - Soft Boys
someone must have suggested this one...(?)
Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You (1980) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAt7hK_zKr0#)
-
Elton John - I'm Still Standing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHwVBirqD2s#)
-
The lyrics don't seem very apropos, but they're hard to hear anyway, and dig that title:
The Like Young - "Snobs and Slobs" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OajN6e7wSTU&feature=player_embedded#)
-
I stand by my original suggestion of "Wake Up" by the Replacements
-
Shakin' Street by MC5.. good riff and New Jersey reference..
Shakin' Street - MC5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbVdrnRm4R4#)
Shakin Street - MC5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASKJaV61eU4#) live version is more energetic but this is poor quality.
-
See, I like that song--but didn't Tom just talk the other week about the MC5 becoming lame after the first album?
-
My suggestion for Best Show Theme 2012: Nazareth's "I'm Not Fakin' It".
1. Learn about history
2. Get pumped up
3. Re-iteration and exhortations about NOT FAKIN' IT!
Nazareth - No Faking It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUBmIOJndws#ws)
-

Less that they became lame and more that they had lameness thrust upon them. The REALLY good version of Shakin' Street is the mostly acoustic version on Babes in Arms (and it would be an excellent Best Show theme song). The alternative versions and mixes on that comp (which is on ROIR) turned me me around on that band -- they didn't get worse, they just got the worst treatment from record labels and producers ever.

Those guys sure aren't fakin' it.

So I guess I'm alone in thinking that Kick Out the Jams is by far the worst of the 3 MC5 LPs?
-
If you insist on that "by far", then yeah, I don't agree -- it's a close call between Kick and Back in the suckstakes. Only High Time is really good, but that ROIR comp is the one to have if you're having only one.

I like Back in the USA, but I think that's more because I like the bands that I see as having been influenced by its sound and energy (Radio Birdman is a big one). In terms of songwriting, I don't think it can be argued that Back in the USA is a better album that Kick Out the Jams.
As for KOTJ, it could've been their best album but it's marred by poor song selection. Minus I Want You Right Now, side two is a zero. Here's the tracklisting for my dream alternate version:
Side One
1. Kick Out the Jams
2. Come Together
3. Rocket Reducer No. 62
4. I Want You Right Now
Side Two
1. Black To Comm
Mind you, this would have to be a really hot recording of Black To Comm from the same shows that the album came from. If such a recording exists, I don't know about it. Black To Comm is great but every version I've ever heard sounds like garbage.

Nah, I agree. Give me Back in the USA over all that silly "brothers and sisters!" nonsense any day of the week.
-
My pick is:
Led Zeppelin: Wearing and Tearing
others:
Lee Harvey Oswald Band's cover of "Junior's Farm"
Circle Jerks: When the S. Hit's the Fan
Queen: Keep Yourself Alive
Les Fleur De Lys: Hold On
Soggy: Waiting For the War
The Nubs: Job
The Nils: Fountains
The Fleshtones: I Was a Teenage Zombie
Personal and the Pizzas: Brass Knuckles...though maybe save that one for the Gorch to cover.

the best show needs to be protected by the red, the black and the green...sissies!
X CLAN "FUNKIN' LESSON" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMlBT0MnaRA#)
-
Ted Leo's cover of "The Spirit of Radio"
-
"Is It Familiar" by The Fastbacks. At five minutes it's too long but all the tempo changes are a blast.
