This book is so weird, but I can't put it down.

I read it, I think, when I was 14 (1972 or 73). I don't remember a damn thing about it. I believe I read it again, or portions of it, when I was about 20. Still I got nothing.

I have an as-yet unread copy.  But I saw a theatrical adaptation of it in NYC and it was pretty great, also irresistibly weird.

It reminded me of both The Warriors and Lost.

I read it maybe 10 years ago, and I still remember scenes much more than any other book I read at the time.  I don't know if this is due it being good or just memorably bizarre. There are parts that are really hard to get through.

If you finish and like it, I recommend the Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe.
