Am I right in thinking that Tom & Jon get a little more personal benefit if the S&W stuff is ordered through www.stereolaffs.com (http://www.stereolaffs.com) as opposed to Amazon?
At any rate, when I ordered directly from Stereolaffs, there were a few extra goodies in the package that made it all worthwhile...
-
Norm Macdonald's recent "Me Doing Standup" is excellent.
Don't buy "Feelin Kinda Patton"--get 222 instead.
David Cross's "Shut Up You Fucking Baby" is a classic.
-
Both Greg Giraldo albums (Good Day To Cross a River and Midlife Vices) are excellent. I'd also recommend Anthony Jeselnik's Shakespeare, Eddie Pepitone's A Great Stillness, Dana Gould's Fun House, and Rory Scovel's Dilation.
-
Wow, thanks guys! I'll definitely check out that Norm MacDonald album, in particular.
-
I don't recommend the Baron Vaughn album (I thought it was dull and that he relied too heavily on singing his punchlines). Todd Barry's From Heaven doesn't really have new stuff on it, from what I recall, so you can leave that off your list.
As an FOT, I think you'll really like Correctamundo by Team Submarine (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/correctamundo (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/correctamundo)!/id391839354).
I enjoy Maria Bamford and also liked Jen Kirkman's Self Help.
David Cross's It's Not Funny is also a favorite. I'd skip Bigger and Blackerer.
-
Laurie Kilmartin's Five Minutes to Myself is really funny. Lots of very dark material about being a single parent in her 40s.
-
Wow, thanks guys! I'll definitely check out that Norm MacDonald album, in particular.
While you're at it, check out his standup on Netflix Watch Instantly. The opening bit about death is, in my opinion, incredible.
-
A bootleg cassette of David Cross from the spring of '02 recorded in Baltimore. 9/11 and the Catholic Church sex scandal are still raw "whoa" moments.
oops, sorry, the thread is about recommends not favorites. Maron's "Final Engagement" is pretty funny and raw.
-
Man, that Anrew Daly album is great. I don't know how many times I've listened to the "Life of the Party, Inc." bit.
-
I haven't heard much of Andrew Daly's standup, but I put that album on there going by this alone:
Andrew Daly is a genius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW6SHmzKZv4#)
I listened to it three times in a row.
-
Nine Sweaters might be my favorite comedy album ever.
-
Neil Hamburger Sings Country Winners
-
Speaking of Neil Hamburger, I think he has the only field recording comedy album

That is hilarious, I need to find that album.

Funny as fuck - What's even better is having the visual to go with the verbal b/c he looks so innocent - almost midwestern! You put that with whatever he's saying and it can come off insane or even psychotic - remember he was that weird neighbor on Reno 911?Like, that guy has body parts in his basement weird? He was also excellent on that Lewis Black show Root of all Evil - a smartypants wiseguy but he looks like a dude who might try and give you a Jack Chick tract when you pass him in the subway station.
-
It's weird b/c I used to listen to comedy albums all the time but now since everyone has podcasts or live recordings on Netflix or Amazon Instant Video, etc - I'm not sure I've bought a comedy album lately.
I would back up the Dana Gould Funhouse suggestion from Master of Sparks (? Was that you?)- He's also got Let me Put My Thoughts Into You as a CD and I think it's still streaming ... he's just started a podcast also. He's one of my all time favorites.
I also think Galafanakis's Live at the Purple Onion is probably the best "capture" of what his live performance was all about - who knows if he goes back to stand up at any point in the future - this is always out there. I think it's streaming on at least one of the services.
Other random ones I can think of:
Bruce McCulloch - Shame Based Man. Not really live stand up, songs and pieces. If you liked his characters on KITH this will probably make total sense to you.
Goldthwait - I Dont Mean to Insult You... If you heard that interview on WTF several months ago and liked that you'd probably like this. He's totally in this "Here's my shit, here's where I'm at now, don't really care if you don't get it" place with his movies and his whole thing lately, and it's pretty great.
How about older ones, anyone?
Woody Allen -- Standup? Pretty amazing, even if you can barely tolerate his movies now. Boy did that Paris one stink.
Cheech & Chong -- hearing Earache My Eye on last week's show made me think of a bunch of those old records, same thing with:
Nat Lamp - I think i'd probably want to find a best of complilation b/c I'd bet I couldn't take some of the bits anymore, but some of them I still remember probably word for word!

The fake John Lennon song (I think it's called "Genius Is Pain") from the Radio Dinner LP (I think...) is unbelievably funny, especially if you're familiar with some of the early Lennon solo stuff.

I bought this on CASSette upon its release!

As great as "Earache My Eye" is, their albums never really did much for me. I'm not a pot guy though, so maybe I'm missing something. I will still stand by Up in Smoke though.
-
Comedy Death Ray! Am I right, guys?
Pretty much every set is great. PFT says some unkind things about Tower Records.
-
Man, that Anrew Daly album is great. I don't know how many times I've listened to the "Life of the Party, Inc." bit.
Same here, that track kills me so much. That whole album really is gloriously funny.

That one and "Our Amazing Future" are unbelievable. Nine Sweaters is definitely my favorite AST release. Andrew Daly is just so obscenely talented.
A fun comedy nerd game is to try and guess the people intro'ing him on each track.

I'm gonna add that Nine Sweaters really is that good and deserves all the praise. Every track is deeply and memorably funny.

I really loved this 37 years ago; don't know how it's held up http://www.amazon.com/Good-bye-National-Lampoon-NATIONAL-LAMPOON/dp/B000URBE8A (http://www.amazon.com/Good-bye-National-Lampoon-NATIONAL-LAMPOON/dp/B000URBE8A)

Invite them up and COmedy Death Ray are good places to start because you can get exposed to a lot of great stand-ups.
-
Does anyone know a good source to know about upcoming releases? And thanks a lot for all the suggestions.
-
Cannot believe Richard Pryor wasn't mentioned.
Is It Something I Said?
Bicentennial Nigger
Those are the Rubber Soul and Revolver of comedy albums.
-
I really hope you didn't pull the trigger on multiple Doug Benson albums.

I've heard enough Mudbone & Little Feets routines for 10 lifetimes, thanks.

What about "Drive My Car" and "Michelle"?

But he's my favorite out of that list. :(

I don't know why you wouldn't if you're a fan. Some are better than others, but at least the first two are excellent IMO.

[REDACTED]'s special "Laboring Under Delusions" was good, though you've probably heard all of it on the many podcasts he appears on.
A spot-on Antony impression at 14:20 of the encore here: DVD Exclusive - Paul F. Tompkins - Full Encore Performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-IKKgIEDOY#ws)
The set proper contains a good half-dozen Steve Martin channellings and they are DARLING.
-

I listened to it three times in a row.
Andy Daly's characters on Comedy Bang Bang ('Hot Dog' and others) are the reason I keep listening to the show (his and James Adomian's). Haven't heard his album, but now I have to get it.
I grew up with the George Carlin albums and saw him live a couple of times. He's a favorite although I know some people are not fond of him. More recent comedy albums I've bought:
Thin Pig by Todd Glass
'My name is Hannibal' by Hannibal Burress
'Falling off the bone' and 'From Heaven' by Todd Barry
'A Great Stillness' by Eddie Pepitone
'Freak Wharf' by PFT
'Rock, Rot and Rule' by S&W
all of them are solid. I need to check out many of the albums listed in this thread.
For most of my comedy needs of late it's been a combination of podcast appearances, Netflix specials, and the occasional live show at The Comedy Attic.
-
All of Steve Martin's standup comedy albums are fantastic bar The Steve Martin Brothers, which was an ill-conceived idea wedging a side of comedy and a side of banjo playing together. An early indication of Martin's musical proclivities which are currently in full flower, but not what a laugh-starved teenager wanted to hear.
-
"Mitch All Together" "Strategic Grill Locations" and "Do You Believe in Gosh?" by Mitch Hedberg are all great with "Mitch All Together" being the best of the 3, especially if you get the CD/DVD set that features the unedited version of his Comedy Central special.
-
That's the one Mitch Hedberg I don't have. I'll have to pick it up.
-
Comparing the edited and unedited versions of the special is fascinating, by the way--it's not simply a matter of swear words cut out, it's the entire taping that was chopped up and rearranged to try to fit Mitch into the standard Comedy Central standup format. Completely different experience.

There's a great box set called "Buy This Box Set or We'll Shoot This Dog: The Best of 'The National Lampoon Radio Hour'" that killer. The ongoing bit about screening times for "The Ryan O'Neal Story" always kills me...
-
I've listened to John Mulaney's "New In Town" a whole lot lately, very funny album.
-
Here's a link to "Genius is Pain" from the WFMU blog http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0512/Magical_Misery_Tour.mp3 (http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/KF/0512/Magical_Misery_Tour.mp3)

I'll back up the Maria Bamford recommendations, I listen to her albums over and over. The first John Mulaney is great, Nine Sweaters is Magnificent, the Hannibal Burress is great. If you get "Feelin' Kind of Patton" try to get the 222 version, which is the whole show the album was made from. Amazing. It's out of print, but there are some used copies available on Amazon.
I think the only thing that hasn't been recommended so far that I enjoyed a lot are Mike Birbiglia's albums. Two Drink Mike and My Secret Public Journal are really good.

I'm pretty sure you can still buy 222 at the Chunklet website.

Who's new, and maybe a little bit under the radar? There's a lot of great recommendations here, but they're the old favorites for the most part and I haven't been keeping up the past couple years.

The Rory Scovel and Pete Holmes albums will probably fit the bill.
