Title: PREMIUM UPDATE.
Post by: Tom Scharpling on May 20, 2012, 12:39:22 AM
Here's an update on this year and last year's WFMU fundraising premium.

The 2011 Premium is pretty much done. The singles are pressed and are being assembled. The download code was just digitized. The posters are done. The shirts are done. The buttons are done. They will be put together and mailed out to everybody who pledged in the next few weeks, I would think. Thank you for your patience with it - a couple of the tracks for the single took longer to be finished. But trust me - it's going to be worth the wait!

The 2012 premium is being worked on. The first thing I want to do is figure out how to get the Radiovision download out to everybody ASAP as a thanks for pledging in advance of the premium shipping. I'll keep you posted on that. The Best Show magazine and CD are a ways away from being done but they are being worked on. Trust me when I say that we're working on these things - we want them to get done as soon as possible but we also want them to be GREAT.

Thanks again for your patience!

Tom.

I don't know if you're looking for suggestions on how to distribute the Radiovision panel. If not, please disregard this post.

What I think would be easiest would be to upload the files to Dropbox or Google Drive and email a link to everyone to those who pledged. The drawback to Dropbox is that I believe you have to have an account with them in order to download. Also, I'm not sure if the location of the files could be returned in a DracSearch (or other internet search engine) query. With Google Drive only the uploader would be required to have an account with Google. You would also be able to limit access only to people given the link to the files (the files will not show up in DracSearch queries). I'm sure there are other avenues that the more tech-savvy FOT's could suggest. These are just the two that immediately sprang to mind.

Excellent point! I wouldn't want those leigons of AltaVista and AskJeeves-using bastards to steal this stuff without having made a pledge.

Thanks for the update, Tom.

This post made me realize I have a forthcoming issue: I'm moving this July.  I had the foresight to have the 2012 premium sent to a permanent family address, but this didn't occur to me when entering information for the 2011 premium.

I hate to be a needle-in-a-haystack bother, but if Tom (or anyone who has been in a similar situation in the past) has a suggestion on how I could go about correcting this, I'd love to hear it.

Mr. Gibbard's version is much funnier and far more pleasing to my ear.

Thanks for the tip.

I spent several hours today at 43 Montgomery Street, Jersey City.

If you're receiving a medium shirt there's a chance that I put your premium pack together. If you're getting a large shirt there's a pretty strong chance I folded it.

There's a wonderful team of people that are working hard at getting your items to you. I feel incredibly privileged to have been part of it for a single afternoon. I'm not sure what the status is of small shirts, XL shirts, etc. But things are happening and your items will be on their way soon if they're not already.

 :)

FAIR WARNING PEOPLE!!!!

I don't know if I should make a separate thread about this, but when you get your premium, DO NOT simply rip it open like you just got your Christmas gift.

Be very careful when you open it. I ripped my poster before I even got to see it. I don't want to complain about it. My fault. Just warning you guys so that you don't do the same.

Also, are the buttons coming at a later time or were they nixed?

I've been a fan of Duh since that album came out. What I *didn't* know until recently was that the singer of Duh is the one and same as that of Hank IV!  A fellow FOT told me this, and it was the crashing of two great worlds.

Until Rated GG I had never actually listened to any of GG Allin's music. While I did enjoy Rated GG I must say that I think I could have lived a long, happy life w/o having ever listened to "Expose Yourself to Kids." He was a better guest on the Morton Downey Jr. Show than he was a musician.

I've never heard GG Allin's music. I enjoy the record and the digital bonuses! I find myself singing "Plead Me To a Lesser Charge", "Friends In the City", and "Nice Face" all the time, and the Julie Klausner track was the necessary cap on it!

The Geeg Cast is one of the funniest things I've heard all year.  Brilliant switch up with Jon playing the straight man and Tom voicing a puny G.G. Allin obsessive.  I dig the cover songs as well, but this is the highlight of the premium for me.  Great job fellas.

i haven't gotten my 2011 premium yet.
who should i ask about the status and more importantly how long should i wait to ask?
i know this is quite a process, so i dont want to be "that guy" and a nuisance.

Give it a few weeks, I do not think they have all been sent out yet. But if you are worried, email Joe McGasko, he is on the case and is never less than 100% courteous.

Is there someone I can email to check on the status?... I don't want to bother TS with
my 'where's my premium' bleating...  :)

I was explaining Rated GG  to a friend who saw the 7" in my house earlier. First I had to quickly explain WFMU, The Best Show, and then I had to explain who GG Allin was (cue aghast face).

"So", I said, "The joke is that the songs were originally filthy, but they have cleaned them up to be suitable for kids, as the cover suggests"

She turned the record over, looked at it for two seconds, and pointed at the band name Fucked Up.

Anyone have a link to Hated that we could watch along with Julie? Its up on YouTube, but in a "special edition" that doesn't seem to line up... or is her commentary condensed to hit the highlights?

Having watched Hated once 10 years ago, I'd say you're much safer just listening and imagining what you're seeing (unless you're a fan of the food you ate earlier not staying in your stomach).

I tried watching it along with the DVD, and it pretty rapidly went way out of sync. It does seem to be a commentary just on selected moments from the film. If you have seen Hated before, you will know what she is talking about. If not, well, you may just have to watch it I'm afraid. But (and without spoiling it for anybody who hasn't seen it),  Julie does a brilliant job of excoriating the pretense of GG and his fans.

I think I have listened to the Geeg Cast 30 times.  So much that I think I could make a podcast about the Geeg cast.  I can't even think about Mayhem's (Andy's) repetition of the word  "Children!"  when correcting Don Reiger without chuckling to myself.

I had the displeasure of seeing Chicken John perform "P.G. Allen" once in S.F.  Baby Ruths replaced the fecal matter. It was pretty dumb.  The two times I was supposed to go see GG play #1 my ride OD'd, and #2 he ended up not playing because the L.A. band wouldn't let them use their gear without a fee.
I had tried to book him through Merle for a show in the Palm Springs area promising $400 and my band's gear to use on that tour, but Merle said "I wouldn't play my living room for less than 600!".
Sorry, it's a sore spot with me that I never got to see him live!  Did get a lot of footage from Merle and Pete De Mattia back in the day though...the Jabbers stuff is still my favorite.

I have an email account that I haven't actively used for about 8 years and I check it very infrequently. But when I did check it recently, I found the email with the link to the Radiovision download there. I'm not sure why it went to that address. So for people who didn't get the info, I would say to check any email accounts that you might have used to pledge to WFMU in the past, and maybe you will find the message there.

Here's the latest on the 2012 premium.

First of all, thank you for your patience. So many people have been working very hard on it for so many months and it is getting there.

The Best Show magazine should be off to the printers in the next few weeks.

The Vance stress ball is being manufactured within the next week.

I should have the songs for the flexi disc in my possession in the next day or so and it will go off to the pressing plant ASAP.

I'm hoping to have the premium out the door for late March.

Again, thanks for your patience. It will be worth it!

Tom.

The magazine is my favorite pledge premium ever, and I loved Rated GG an awful lot.

It's full of funny stuff, but the biggest laugh I had was on the inside back cover, from the list of new Spike names for celebrities:

France Leg Weak.

Just finished the magazine, and it is just as great as I thought. Many highlights, but Samir's pieces is one of my favourites, a perfect evocation of how one gets 'into' the show, and very similar to my own experience. I started listening in February 2008, almost exactly a year after Samir, and also being from the UK, many of the references went over my head initially. Nowadays, a huge amount of what I know about American culture comes from the Best Show.

On an unrelated note, has anyone received their non-Best Show 2013 swag yet? I haven't, but I imagine if the Best Show premium is imminent, they may be waiting to send it out all at once.

I received my FMU T-shirt and stickers and Therese's premium. The other premiums I'm due were marked as back ordered.

I don't think the 2013 BS premium is imminent is it? If the single needs pressing and packaging that can take a while...

 8) I emailed Joe too.  He took care of it.  All is right in the world.

Did the 2013 Premium go out? I heard the single on CBC but never received anything.

It has not. The record is still in the process of being pressed.

Did this arrive with 2014 FMU marathon stuff, or did it ship separate?

I totally forgot about this.  Found a package from 'fmu on my stoop this afternoon containing a record, a slicker (which anyone named 'Bob' can borrow) and a set of buttons.

What a wonderful surprise. Thanks Tom!

I got mine but there was a hole in the box. There were only three buttons included?

Also, I pledged for the colored vinyl/autographed single. Should I contact Joe to swap out or did this not happen? Scanned the forum and didn't see anything.

And if anyone else is interested, I just got word that the colored vinyls are being shipped separately and should be arriving shortly. :)
