Title: Best Show vs. Comedy Bang Bang
Post by: ryansartor on June 28, 2012, 05:37:58 PM
Do you guys think there is any comparison between what Tom does with the Best Show and what Aukerman does on Comedy Bang Bang? I enjoy CBB on occasion, but it's very hit and miss.

A friend of mine whom I greatly respect the comedy taste of prefers CBB and I just can't even entertain that opinion. I think Best Show is far superior.

What do you think?

Too different in pretty much every aspect. It would never come to mind to compare them both.

Are you asking if Tom has guests who are funnier than he is and interrupts their flow with dad jokes and anticomedy? I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

I like both shows, The Best Show more, but they really are apples and oranges.  TBS is all about Tom & Jon, whereas CBB varies wildly depending on the guest.  Andy Daly, Nick Kroll, and PFT are all pretty fantastic every time.  On the other hand, a listener could tune into CBB cold and pretty much get it, while TBS takes either 3-4 shows or an isolated Scharpling & Wuster bit to really get the jist of it (at least it did for me).

I don't like this game! Everyone gets to have fun with both things existing. Hooray for everyone!

They are probably too different to compare aside from being audio based entertainment featuring comedians. That said I think Comedy Bang Bang sometimes devolves into kind of bro-ish humor and I can do without hearing people play the 'Would You Rather' game ever again in my life.

On the other hand as mentioned Andy Daly, James Adomian, and Nick Kroll really bring it whenever they are on. Also I kind of liked the TV show, in part because there's way more Reggie Watts.

Yeah, that one's getting a little worn out. I do enjoy "What am I Thinking", though. And some of the more ridiculous non-games like "Dead or Not Dead"?

Scott introducing every game with "We all know how this is played" never gets old for me.

While it doesn't translate to audio I do have to say that "What am I thinking?" is quite fun to play in real life. I do think maybe they could have retired it after that 20 minute long version with Jon Heder and someone else.

Yeah, Aukerman obviously doesn't know what he's doing...   ::)

Both shows are great. I often listen to CBB first, because it's shorter and a little less demanding. I know I'm going to get laffs, but probably not much else. The Best Show, however, requires a little more attention, and can be an emotional rollercoaster.

I have to admit I also like:

- playing 2 minutes of the intro song
- The 'Hollywood Facts' game, which we haven't heard for a while

Scott Aukerman's one of the few LA podcasters who's improved his show over the years.  Unlike Doug Benson.

PS: well the increased commercialization of the show sucks but I s'pose it's a necessary evil and I can easily FFwd thru.

Doug Benson was really overexposed for a while. A couple years ago he was on every podcast there was, but it was nice in terms of making you search out and give some other podcasts a chance. I haven't listened to Doug is loving the movies for some time now.

Best Show vs. podtrash

Best Show wins every time.

The Best Show has a heart.  Comedy Bang Bang is exclusively about getting laughs.  If Scott A. had a bad week, it wouldn't be brought up on the show.

That being said, I like Comedy Bang Bang; but if I had to choose, it's the Best Show by a mile.

if CBB doesn't have a good guest, it's awful. Aukerman can't carry a show on his own, but he sure does have funny friends.

CBB is all JOKE JOKE JOKE, but I can only get hit over the head with silliness for so long before it gets stale.  TBS has so much more depth that the highs are much higher.

Also, I do really like Doug Benson....but I also like smoking pot.

I also enjoy CBB. but preferred it as Comedy Death Ray (back when it was cool). I am impressed with their fully realized characters and only get irritated when Aukerman  plays dumb "comedy" records, during the breaks. Tom has superior taste in music, as we all know. I started on the TBS by being hooked on the music and became a devotee because of the patter and mythology of Newbridge.

I think Aukerman's biggest talent is bringing out the best in his funny friends. For example, I have a hard time with PFTs podcast, because a lot of the Tompkast is Paul sitting alone with a microphone, riffing off on way too many tangents, and laughing at himself in a manner I find to be a little too self-satisfied. And the character work in "the great undiscovered project" on the Tompkast also suffers from a lack of other humans.

But those same characters, with Scott prodding them in various directions on CBB? Much, much better.

... also the construct of Bob Ducca being Scott's needy ex-stepfather? (Who was married to Scott's Mom for like, three months)? Perfect way to introduce that character to the world.

We don't even get the comedy songs anymore on CBB. They appear to have been entirely replaced by ads.
