Title: Welcome to Baltimore
Post by: erika on May 27, 2007, 07:16:53 PM
Since there was so much talk of Charm City in the "What do you do for a living thread" I figured I'd start a special thread for this oh so special place that is Baltimore, MD.

(I'm not sure if I split off the thread properly so if we need to copy the last few B-more-related posts in here let me know)

some of my favorite Baltimore-ish things:

Sadly, I couldn't find a photo of Crab Imperial. But it's creamy and delicious and everyone should just trust me and order it if you visit my fine city.

PS. These are the best chips IN THE WORLD. Challenge me on this. I dare you.

Yes!

Back in January, there was a battle between Bawlmer's Dr. Brown's Black Cherry and Philly's Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak in the food tent at the Popadelphia Pop Nation fest.  The Good Doctor won!

Yes, Erika, I wholeheartedly agree.  It's because they don't douse the taters with sodium (which they begrudgingly proclaim on the package copy).  Recently Wurster invoked the name of the company, pronouncing it "AUGHT-Z."  I always thought it rhymed with "BUTTS."  Which is correct?

Of course, I'm being lazy.  There must be an UTZ Podcast on Odeo.com.

Anyone else ever been to Whole Lotta Stuff?  I think it shut down and went all internet in 1999.  IT was ALL vintage t-shirts and rock/metal merch, dirt cheap.  Exactly the stuff they'll sell now at Fred Siegle(sp?) in L.A. for like $120.  I think that's what the old metal head dude that ran it ended up doing--just selling everything to boutiques and making a killing.  There were literally piles and piles of shirts.  A lot of posters too, I believe.

My dad and I have our Baltimore routine perfected.  We arrive for an Orioles game around 4, easily find street parking by the Babe Ruth house, and buy primo seats for face value at Camden Yard's "legal scalping" area.(This is a real thing) Even for Yankees or Red Sox games, if you show up at the right place at the right time, you can score seats right on the dugout for 20 bucks.  Boom.

Tickets secured, we walk a few blocks over to Lexington Market and enjoy Faidley's crab cakes, fried catfish, collard greens, and the spiciest macaroni and cheese I've ever had.  We wash our food down w/ 1 dollar plastic cups of beer, and then back to the park to catch BP.  After enjoying the game in this country's finest sporting venue, we're back on 95 south within 5 minutes, usually discussing how far the O's have fallen since '83 and how they should be managed by Eddie and owned by Cal.

Say, do any of youse Baltimore FOTs have connections to the music scene there? My band is travelling from NYC to play a show in Washington DC on June 16 and would love to stop in Baltimore for a show on the 15th. So far we haven't had much luck finding anything. I'm always terrible at trying to describe what we sound like, but I guess you could say it's indie rock with a bit of country thrown in. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have any music connections really. Sorry! But check www.citypaper.com.

David, that picture of Cal makes him look like a baby! Did you ever try the freshly made bbq utz they sell at lexington market? Or the lemons with sugar sticks/candy canes stuck in them like straws? Instant lemonade!

(Gosh I love food.)

Thanks for the responses...I think we might just play a house party in PA for the 15th. Next time, we'll try Charm City again.

Hey kenkwan, your band is pretty cool (Power Pop Pop-Pop would enjoy). Consider us befriended and I'll send a reminder about the DC9 show.

Since it's the hot hot summertime I thought I'd make mention of the Baltimore phenomena that is the Snowball:

I had a chocolate snowball with marshmallow in the middle this weekend and it hit the spot like nothing else. Next time I'm gonna mix it up and have them mix cherry flavor in with the chocolate and the marshmallow. Divine.

So this is a snow cone in a Styrofoam cup as opposed to a nice biodegradable paper cone?  Fie!

hmmm sorta. Sometimes they're in a paper cup. But the ice and flavoring is a little different (flavoring is thicker and the ice is more chippy) than a snow cone.

plus, you can get ice cream or marshmallow stuffed into the middle of all those tasty icee chips.

the one i ate this weekend was in a coated paper cup.

Well, I'm a white person and I tend to go back and forth between the "Arnold Palmer" and the "Half and Half" so does that somehow make me confused about my race?

Also, does anyone else remember these:

It's called rainbow cake and it's really popular in jewish deli's and restaurants. it's dense, almond flavored cake with raspberry jelly in the middle and it's dipped in chocolate shell/icing type stuff. Sometimes they put chocolate in place of the raspberry but it doesn't taste as good IMHO.

It's popular in NY and NJ too but whenever I eat it it makes me think of home.

I recommend the following, in order from favorite to less-favorite:

- Plain non-ripple (trust me, they're the best)
- BBQ non-ripple
- Salt n Vinegar
- Carolina BBQ
- Sour Cream and Onion (non-ripple)
- Salt and Pepper

and then all the others are good too. I don't love the Crab Chips (old bay) but some people adore them.

I was surprised about the existence of garlic and onion -- i've never had them or heard of them before. All their snacks are good -- pretzels and chocolate covered pretzels included.

I'd say make sure, no matter what, that you try at least one of the flavors of BBQ and the plain ones, and then any of their other snacks. Even the cheese curls are good and I don't usually like those. Too much powdery cheeze.

i'm one of the many boston red sox fans who make short vacations out of traveling with the sox down to baltimore and turning camden yards into fenway park south.  my first time down there i expected to just spend most of my time in washington dc, but baltimore grew on me and now i devote at least a couple of days exploring the city. we have most of the utz chip line here too, and i finally gave in and tried the crab chip when i found out that there was no actual crab in it, but old bay seasoning.  here's my little tribute to baltimore.

strangely enough i don't remember boardwalk fries being seasoned.  i think what's so great about them is that they're made fresh with the skin still on, and deep fried in peanut oil, and it's almost a sin to put ketchup on them.  we used to have a franchise at a mall up here in boston when i was a kid.

the proper way to eat boardwalk fries is with apple cider vinegar and maybe a little old bay. i stick with just the vinegar.

I think it's a Sarah thing.

Partial review:  The whole grain sticks are good but don't have that particular taste I'm looking for in a pretzel.  The specials, however, come near to what I want and may become my pretzel of choice.  Chipwise, I've only tasted the plain variety yet.  Perfectly good but not overwhelming enough to persuade me to get them all the time.

I'm delaying sampling the Carolina BBQ and onion and garlic chips because I want very much for them to be wonderful, and as long as I haven't tasted them yet the possibility still remains.
Title: Re: Welcome to Baltimore
Post by: Sarah on August 02, 2007, 03:46:58 PM
Utz review the second:

Last two varieties sampled.  The Carolina BBQ chips are indeed very good, vinegary and hot.  I'm curious to see how the regular BBQ variety compares.  The onion-and-garlic chips are not exactly what I'd hoped for (I have unrealistic desires here, since I want something that matches a flavor from my childhood), but they're still better than the other alternative (Wise).  I also had another couple of plain chips for comparison's sake and today found them delectable.  The whole grain sticks, however, remain disappointing.  And the big winners are the specials, which I'll definitely buy again.

I now feel ever so slightly sick, not that I ate masses of any of these this afternoon--just enough to make me long for some nice, grease-free fruit.  And all I have is grapes.  Damn.

And here endeth the disquisition.

I was walking through Mt. Vernon a few weeks ago on a beautiful day, and I turned to admire this really cool billboard (Utz Girl + Natty Boh guy) from afar, and was immediately stopped in my tracks. I felt sick instantly.

I saw something like 8 shrouded bodies arranged around this park bench. As we got closer we saw that it was an art exhibit from MICA called "Too Many of Us".

The juxtoposition of the "bodies" against the pretty urban backdrop was really stunning. Pics:

Whereabouts did you take your day-in-balmer photos?  Some of these look kinda like my old neighborhood (in Pigtown, off of Lombard).

I've never watched an entire episode of Mad Men, but it appears to be a show about smoking. Is that true?

Oh wow I didn't notice that. I'd been watching the show, but mostly in the wee hours of the night/morning...

Utz are the best. No doubts about it.

Get yourself an extra lean corned beef sandwich on rye with swiss and mustard and smoosh some Utz plain chips onto it. I learned that from Cliff Huxtable.

Erika!

I'm from Ellicott City/Columbia (so I can't rep Baltimore as hard as I want to) but my oh so Pikesville grandparents bookend every celebratory event with this delicious rainbow cake!

I didn't even realize how real they kept it.

Coddies,

The gentrification train is coming through and it's going to plow over a good portion of a community on it's way...

If you have a second, check out this article about the Copy Cat building (http://xml.baltimoresun.com/business/realestate/bal-te.md.copycat02feb02,0,5592680.story) (or this one (http://www.citypaper.com/news/story.asp?id=15165)) that is about to be gutted and it's residents "relocated". My boyfriend lives in this building and has for about 4 years. It's an awesome building, although parts of it are pretty run down... it's got some decent apartments in it and all different sorts of residents, artists included. (Even though these articles only focus on the artists...)

Essentially, a developer wants to kick out the residents, gut these apartments, raise the rent, slap a starbucks on the corner and call it an "arts district". What's funny is that most of the people they're kicking out of the building (which is portrayed as just a bit too quirky in this Sun article... I guess they needed to spin it some way) are artist-types.

The other FUNNY part of this is that the blocks immediately surrounding the building are what anyone would call run down... to put it lightly. For those few of you who might have caught any of that series they call "The Wire", the housing would look familiar... boarded up houses, general poverty, cops on every corner, homeless, etc.

So I guess the idea is to get some DC transplants (commuters) interested in this property and the surrounding area. But what happens to the people that live there? Instead of attempting to actually make the neighborhood into a community, they just move the "problem people" and replace them with starbucks and apartment buildings that will probably sit empty due to the housing market and also the fact that most of baltimore KNOWS that this part of town isn't worth paying $1500 a month in rent...

My boyfriend's neighbor just received a 60 day notice of termination of lease. We're waiting to hear from his landlord to see if he's going to have to move. If these articles say nothing's been finalized, then why are they already kicking people out.

Any talk these developers have of relocating the residents are bullshit. The lot they mention in the article is a place full of crack pipes and needles. It looks like a bomb went off there. I can't imagine them taking the time to even bother... If they actually build any sort of artist housing I'll eat my own foot.

Developers suck. Why does no one value actually improving a community instead of bulldozing it?

Fucking lame.

People don't even know what a community is because for anybody under 30 it really has never existed if you grew up in a metro area. If people actually knew what a community looked like I think more people would fight for sustainable communities.
Title: Re: Welcome to Baltimore

Actually, I think the reason is that the developers are greedy, and it costs them less to bulldoze and build (cheaply) anew than to restore what already exists.  You see it in microcosm when people buy houses around here:  the good ones take the time to fix what's there; the jerks tear 'em down and put up something new instead.

I also think many developers have no stake--they think--in preserving the existing community because they don't think there's enough money in it for them.  Often, of course, they find that by disrupting a community's ecosystem (for want of a better word), after a short spell of extreme profit, they see no returns at all, because, as you say, Gilly, the new Frankenstein community is not sustainable.

My local developer is fifty years old; he grew up in New Brunswick (Canada) and Aroostook County, though he arrived here after years of being a creep in Florida.  He knows, or at least once knew, what a community looks like and, specifically, what a community in rural, coastal Maine looks like.  He claims to value the community here.  But he also claims he knows what's best for it, and what's best, apparently, is what he hopes will make him the most money.  Thus, as I type, the factory that he claimed he had every intention of maintaining as a working waterfront venture is being gutted and fitted with apartments (though meanwhile a lobster bait concern remains in one portion--have you ever smelled lobster bait? just what someone purchasing a high-priced condo wants next door).  My one satisfaction is that he hired one of the worst carpenters in town, a young fellow whose work ethic also suffers somewhat from his addiction to oxycodone, so the resulting units will likely prove to be jerry-built pieces of shit for which Mr. Victor "Lying, Greedy Bastard" Trafford will not be able to get the no doubt exorbitant prices he intends to charge.

It's the end of an era.  Major money problems have led to the final curtain call for the Senator Theatre.  The landmark theater has shown its last film as its owner faces foreclosure.  Mike Schuh has more on the struggles.

For the first time in 70 years, the Senator has closed.  To run this landmark, it costs $100,000 a month.  Money from admissions doesn't even come close.

Title: Documentary on Baltimore's Unlicensed Venues
Post by: erika on January 26, 2010, 11:16:26 AM
http://citypaper.com/digest.asp?id=16846

Quote
Nicky Smith (the son of City Paper co-founder Russ Smith) has a short black-and-white documentary, Shut Down and Shut Up, circulating online right now that is worth a look. Basically, it's him sitting down with the proprietors of the since-defunct Scarey Studios, Floristree, the Hexagon, Hamilton Arts Collective, the since-defunct Wham City, the Bank, and the "NC" ("Scott," with his face blurred and voice altered), and talking about the challenges and motivations behind running a DIY space. It's to-the-point and brief at 16 minutes, but it gives all of the folks involved plenty of opportunity to talk candidly about their spaces. Rocking back and forth in a chair, Dan Deacon muses, "It's weird to have a level of responsibility that revolves around other people being irresponsible." Maybe our favorite line, however, comes from Floristree's Shaun Flynn: "There are three working bathrooms, and people will still piss in the elevator"

One of my best friends is highlighted talking about his old place Scarey Studios...he's accompanied by another good friend who passed away a few months ago. Besides all that, this is a great little documentary on the "scene" here in Baltimore. There's another project happening here that's pretty interesting as well: http://deadvenuesofbaltimore.blogspot.com/
