Title: The Rest Show with Hatch
Post by: Jason from Huntsville, AL on August 29, 2012, 09:30:07 AM
I feel like "The Rest Show" really came into it's own last night. We were literally taken places we've never been taken before. Everyone did a super job dealing with the lack of calls and rolling with the chaos.

Also, I'm glad I didn't have to use this graphic:

(I didn't see a thread for "The Rest Show," so I started this one. Feel free to move or whatever, Mods.)

Is that what it's called now? I liked "Hatch Patch."

It will always be "The Hatch Patch" in my heart. Hatch HATES that name for some reason, though. Fear of pirates?

Gregg, I'll have to check Power Grid out. I've been playing this, both the physical form and the app:

And yes, everything Jason said.  This past Rest Show was one for the Library of Congress.

On a side-note, anyone who hasn't been to the Library of Congress should go. it's the greatest.

I haven't heard The Rest Show yet but boardgame talk excites me!

My friends and I are playing a ton of Catan and the expansion pack: Seafarers of Catan which adds islands and ships. We also like Ticket to Ride: it's somewhere between traditional board games and the German style games.

Also, Dominion is a fun card game. I've been meaning to try out Arkham Horror.

In Grateful Dead live recording notation, my personal high point of the program was A Tiny Panther Is Attacking My Arm>Turn down the Steely Dan, Mike>It's a Chevy Cavalier>Are They Saying Turn Up the Steely Dan?

My favorite part of the show was Mike bragging about his pretzels.

Yes, that was a highlight.  I couldn't decide whether "I'll put my pretzel up against yours any time" was completely innocent or utterly filthy.

I like how Murderin' Mike can pass off vicious hate crimes so casually. It's all just fun and games to him.

If I was the co-host I'd come in wearing a stab vest.

It'd be ok. Mike calls in from prison, that would be great radio.

This is for people much more familiar with The Best Show and its fill-ins to decide, hence the question mark:

Best fill-in show ever?

No. The Wally Wackiman/Greggulator Hatch Patch was easily the best.

Edit: That might have also been the show where Skeevy advised Wally Wackiman to "get some ass," which is one of my favorite Best Show moments ever.

Hey FOT,
I was really disappointing that there was not even an ATTEMPT to install the ceiling fan.  Maybe next Rest Show.  I do think it would at least make for interesting radio, based on Mike and Hatch's bickering-old-married-couple dynamic from the car and Massa's.  I can imagine it, now:

Hatch:Okay, Mike, now hand me the phillips-head screwdriver.

Hatch:No, Mike, I didn't ask for you to hand me a beer!  I'm already in enough danger on Joe Puppy's wobbly step-ladder.  I don't need to be inebriated, too.

Mike:Come on!  Live a little!
(Followed by a Big Ang impression)

Also, glad you guys liked Wally & Greggulator's showdown.  It was fun.

I appreciate Mike's take on unemployment. It really is heartening. People think working in an office 40 hrs a week is soul crushing, but nothing is more soul crushing than sitting around with nothing to do watching your savings rapidly decrease. I listen to a lot of podcasts, but Depravity's Rainbow is second only to the Best Show in my opinion.

The ceiling fan is up, but the lights aren't working (I think there's a problem with the wall switch connection). I'll do it again tomorrow, changing a couple connections. At least this time I'll know what I'm doing. For now, the breeze feels good. Just in time for...fall.

Attempting to install a ceiling fan in the dark would have been a disaster. Try it yourself and you'll see why.

Doing it at night woulda been fine Mike. I bet the lights would be working if you'd let me help install it.

The lights are working now, smart aleck. It would have been a disaster, trust me. And we probably would have set the building on fire by connecting the wrong wires in the dark.

I was catching up on the last few episodes and I was surprised to suddenly hear discussion of one of my favorite board games, the German gem known as Power Grid, on The Rest Show. I was not expecting them to let you go on with your analysis of the finer strategic considerations when building your plutocratic energy empire but luckily for me, I got to hear the only discussion of the game from someone outside of the couple friends I used to play with during my formative years in NJ.

Thank you Greggulator, for championing the seemingly mundane yet incredibly fascinating game. I suggest you look into the China/Korea expansion for more variations in natural resource and bidding procedures.

INCREDIBLE Rest Show last night.

Re the Superman to Danzig's Batman: Rollins seems like an obvious choice, even though he has the wrong letter on his chest.

Mike needs to be featured more on these Rest Shows. No reason he should be manning the phones. His comments on The Blair Witch Project and Dario Argento were golden.

Giving him some credit, solid call by the H-Man--on point, illuminated the topic, and managed not to draw the wrath of B_Buster.

Fun show with a wide cast of characters. Good job by Hatch keeping it all together.

Z-Man was right about it being from a Wizard magazine casting call, specifically the January 1995 issue:

Thanks for the compliments on the call!  I was at first confused, thinking my brother called in, too, without me noticing.  I checked with him and clarified that you must have just gotten your "-Man"s mixed up.  Otherwise, nice to see a scan of that Wizard casting call.  It brings back memories.  I wonder if I still have that one, or ever did, or just read it in a Barnes & Noble, somewhere.

Otherwise, more recently, he actually spoke about being approached officially about playing the role: http://www.avclub.com/articles/danzig-says-he-was-asked-to-play-wolverine-wouldnt,75704/ (http://www.avclub.com/articles/danzig-says-he-was-asked-to-play-wolverine-wouldnt,75704/) .  Again, I don't know much about him, but I have no idea what he's talking about with Jackman's portrayal.  I know the guy's into musical theater, but nothing of a stereotypical nature came off in his portrayal of Wolverine, unless I missed something.
