Tom,
Confirming what you said about Garry Shandling and The Comedy Store picket line. According to the book I'm Dying Up Here, Mitzi Shore didn't think too much of Garry's act until he crossed the picket line and it was only then that he got stage time. pp. 205-206.

That was a pretty good book. I remember that bit and in fact it put me off Garry Schandling (who I had liked during Garry Schandling show days) for a while, until Tom's general praise of Hank 'Hey Now' Kingsley got me to give the Larry Sanders show a try. IIRC Garry had come from a 'management' family and did not have much sympathy for strikes and unions as a result, not that he was exactly in a management position when he crossed the picket line there.

Etymologically speaking, it is perhaps worth mentioning that "Shandling" is derived from Middle Low German for "little shameful dude", while "Sharpling" is derived from the Middle Low German for "sharp guy". No kidding.

What's Friedrich derived from?

English form of a Germanic name meaning "peaceful ruler", derived from frid "peace" and ric "ruler, power."

I recently re-watched this episode of "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (because it had a Tom Petty performance) and it's just as funny as I remembered (pretty funny!)
It's Garry Shandling's Show Season 2 Episode 2 No Baby, No Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbumJb1ko-0#)
I could never get into Larry Sanders though.
