I have become fascinated with last.fm (I know, I am always the last to the party.)
I like to open the console/scrobbler, and click on the "Tune In" tab to track down circles of similar artists. So, for example, you type in Beach Boys, and it gives a list of other artists. I believe that these are artists who are intended to be the most popular/comparable to the one you typed in. One of the groups is usually in giant letters, so that the Beach Boys get most closely compared to the Beatles, and there's a long list (Beck, Blur, Bob Dylan, etc...)
"Superchunk" gives you "PORTASTIC, Archers of Loaf, Beat Happening, Big Star,..."
"Ted Leo" gives you "THE DECEMBERISTS, AC Newman, Architecture in Helsinki, Belle and Sebastian, ..."
If you know what I am talking about, go that spot and type in "Scharpling".
NOTHING COMPARES/STACKS UP TO SCHARPLING!!! NOTHING! HE'S INCOMPARABLE.
Of course we knew that, but it's nice to get independent confirmation.
You folks have a great week!

By the by, if you like The Beach Boys, may I recommend The High Llamas? That is some good stuff.

Dave, you might also dig the new Dr. Dog album, "We All Belong." They rock because they get so tantalizingly close to being a "The Band" cover band but then toss a firecracker (e.g. spanner) into the works. If you are in the middle of a Christian vs [] debate, it might also make you cry. But your mileage may vary.

PS Dave, thank you for providing ballast to the TBSOWFMU.
