Thirty-one seconds into the classic 90's dance floor filler 'Hideway' singer De Lacy makes a noise that sounds like she's vomiting into a metal waste paper bin.
Ladies and gentlemen I give you the worst note in music history.

C#
-
A lot of people think that C# is one of, if not THE worst notes.
I say they're just copy cat wannabe Philistines who can't make their own minds up.
C# has stood the test of time and I think it will be a while yet before it's dropped from the musical scale or even relagated down to the far end that most people generally ignore.
-
C#M is Johnny Marr's favorite chord and god bless him for that.
-
I hate music; it's got too many notes.-- P. Westerberg.

C#
C#maj7 is a solid, solid chord, and a great place to go to after E or A.
D# on the other hand is pointless and should be removed from all instruments past or present.

When I was young because I was tall our music teacher forced me to play the double bass.
Like putting the 'fat kid' in goal is good enough for a lot of PE teachers being the tallest lad in the class is a curse that usually winds up with you playing the double bass.
I had no musical aptitude at all and couldn't fathom where the notes ont he page were on the strings.
It's only now that I realise that it's because the 'DB' has TOO MANY NOTES ON IT! If they got rid of about 3/4's of them I might have stood a chance, plus it would have opened up this horrible instrument to some of the smaller kids who got away with playing two acorn shells or a match box with elastic bands stretched over it.

Ah, Tom Hulce.

Among all the notes played on Chicago albums, how can only one be singled out? They're all the worst.
However, I learned this interesting fact from the Wikipedia entry on "Color My blearrggh -- wait. "Color MBLAAAAGGGGGH -- Sorry. Can't type it out. You know. That song:
"The major seventh chord that begins the song has been called, 'the most famous major seventh chord in the history of music.'" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_My_World_%28Chicago_song%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_My_World_%28Chicago_song%29)

I think the first 3 Chicago records have some interesting stuff on them.

I agree.
Chicago never made a great album. But they did make one or two very good ones.

I have to agree here.

Supposedly, Hendrix was a fan of his.
And lest we forget Danny Seraphine. Dude was a hell of a drummer.

They played 'That Don't Impress Me Much' or whatever it's called on the radio this morning.
While Shania irks me more than she really should the note she uses to screech the words 'You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine....' really has to be up there with the very worst.
Specifically the 'You're one of those'
Awful awful awful.
As a side note we were in Hyde Park one day and Shania was doing her soundcheck for a concert she was giving that night. As a consequence we heard her 'best' songs for 'free'.
When I say 'best' obviously I mean 'least bad' and when I say 'free' obviously there was some emotional scaring but what can you do? It was a lovely sunny day and we were there before she was so why should we move?
Digressing off the 'worst note' path a bit, y'know that song where she says the 'best thing about being a woman' is to wear a 'man's shirt, short skirt whu-hu-ho!' Yes dear, 'totally crazy' I know but I've always tried to think of what the 'best thing about being a man' is.
I think I've cracked it.
I was writing something earlier when I absent mindedly started scratching the back of left hand with my stubble.
The ability to scratch your left hand with the stubble on your chin while writing.
THAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MAN!
In your face most ladies and Gillette.

Yes, Hendrix was asked about any new bands he liked, and he said something to the effect of 'there's this band called Chicago that's going to blow some minds'.
Also a co-worker told a tale of seeing them open for Hendrix once. So there was a connection.

I've thought of another one.
M People. One Night in Heaven.
goes.
One night in Heaven, One night in Heaven,
merneep, mernoop.
One night in Heaven, One night in Heaven,
'Wurrrrghhhhhhaaaaayyyhaaayyyheeeaya!'
That bit. Rotten.

I've thought of another one.
Katrina and the Waves awful 'Walking on Sunshine' starts off with a drum being walloped then Katrina or a Wave goes 'Yeow!'
It's not an 'Ow!' of 'Let's go!' or an 'Oi' of 'pay attention' it's definitely a 'Yeow!' of someone who's just stood on a plug, kneeled on a piece of Lego (or as you Americans call it 'Legoes') or received an electric shock of the microphone.
It isn't a note whatever it is and I can't imagine how it got past the eagle ear of the technicians at Katrina and Waves HQ.

Ben Buff, you are a funny dude. Is there someplace on the net where we can read more of you when, as seems inevitable, this board begins to go dark?

@CWN
Thanks for the praise. Err, you can usually spot me moaning about the quality of British TV in the telly pages of The Guardian and if you want to over look the poor grammar, spelling and lay out then coffeymagic.blogspot.com is the place you should go.
There is some good stuff on there.
Like the time I beat Maggie Thatcher at table tennis.
Who else can claim that?
