Title: The Best You Can Do Is Be Worse Than the Best Show
Post by: buffcoat on June 06, 2007, 03:35:03 PM
Got my premium CD today.  Five tracks:

Two short-to-medium Pudge bits from the show, a "Get on the Rascal" style bit from Philly Boy Roy, Zachary Brimstead introduces his new new new band on "Newbridge Now," and "The Consolidated Cardboard Tapes."

This last one features a whole bunch of S&W and their buddies leaving messages for CC in 1984.  Apparently "Aggregated Cardboard" in their primary competitor.

"Where's my daddy?"

ditto that, my refrigerator is now officially the coolest appliance in my kitchen.  Wow, the Gorch AND Roy appear live in the studio last night, the Victory pack arrives today, and in my dvd player at this very moment -- The Queen!  It's like some kind of Best Show Celebration Week.  'just wish i had caught the Saturday fill-in appearance (has anyone checked if it's been archived?)

Quick t-shirt poll: Pulaski Skyway or sasquatch drumer?

Tick one for sasquatch drummer , and up close right here it is quite the looker!

Got mine yesterday! Actually, it arrived on Tuesday, but the neighbor who picked it up for me said he got too drunk to bring it up to my apartment. Still, it's all mine now, including the Sasquatch shirt. Thanks, Tom!

The archives page now has Saturday's hour show and this past Tuesday's show. I am very happy about this.

Just got it!!! The Pulaski Skyway tshirt is very nice, but the magnet is amazing. Can't wait to listen to the CD.

Best of all, Tom signed the bag with the helix symbol from NBC's Heroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:HeroesSymbol.jpg), an utterly amazing callback to an obscure Josh from Miami call during the "Tom on..." segment at the end of the May 15, 2007 (http://www.recidivism.org/2007/05/the_belt_brigade.html) show (for completists only (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=23089&archive=35184&starttime=2:54:53)). Also, thanks to whoever picked up my lead and asked for "Tom on... real life heroes".

I'm doing the monthly installment plan for my donation. Do I have to wait until the full ten months have elapsed?

I'm happy to get you mp3s of the set or other people who are waiting for their physical CD to arrive.

Nein!  You still get it later in the summer if you're on the installment plan.

That track was a mind-blower in so many ways  --- shrill cassette answering machine beeps, ten-dollar corporate brain farts ("please by advised whether or not this is going to impact the Reynold's order"), and consummate voice work.  The drunk, profanity-laced phone calls sound like Stevie Blue :)  Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

I also got my Kings of Comedy disc signed thingamabobs.  Very exciting!

The ZB bit is classic.

The new lyrics to "Barbershop Lover."  Barbershop Eros.

"It drips down from my carriage erotically to the pleasure of all."

I sent in my pledge money last week and Megan at WFMU told me I should get my swag when they do their next wave of mailing in mid-July.

I'm listening to the CD again right now.  I already posted about Pudge in a Pudge thread (can't believe I didn't recognize the voice when I heard the calls during the show; there must be more distortion when I listen live than I realized ), but here I wanted to sing the praises of "The Consolidated Cardboard Tapes."  Amazing stuff.  It was particularly lovely to hear Tom being someone other than Tom.  He's  straight man supreme, sure, but, damn, he's so much more than that.  We get hints on the show, but his various characters during this answering-machine bit made me long for more.

Oh, there's also startling new information about the device.  It's way, way bigger than I imagined (not that I've spent a lot of time thinking about it--I promise).

I just got mine yesterday, Laurie, and all week the DJs were thanking volunteers for sending out mouse premiums, so I bet you'll get yours soon.

Ditto here -- the Consolidated Cardboard segment was genius, and that same line "please be advised whether or not" cracked me up too, along with the calls "I've driven my car off a cliff" and "I've been arrested for murder."  Great work, Tom and John!!!  And thanks for the bag of surprises Tom!

I got my package last night, but the villain who delivered it failed to ring the GD bell. It sat on my doorstep overnight, and it was not stolen, and it did not rain! JOY!

So, is it bad that, when I ran into a friend that I hadn't see in a while on the F train last night, and she talked my ear off all the way home, I was a little annoyed because all I really wanted to do was listen to the Consolidated Cardboard Tapes again?  That's bad, right?
