OAKLAND -- A group of high school athletes were robbed at gunpoint of their backpacks during a soccer scrimmage at a West Oakland park Wednesday afternoon.
Police said 12 to 15 soccer players, ages 16 and 17, were practicing about 3:30 p.m. at Lowell Park between 12th and 14th streets when two men came and started taking their backpacks that were lined up on the field.
When the players confronted the men, one man pulled up his shirt and showed a gun, police said.
No shots were fired and no one was injured.
The backpacks contained shoes, wallets, cellphones and other valuables, police said. Police declined to say what school the players attend. The men drove away in a car, but police did not release a description of the vehicle.
A description of the suspects was also not released.
No one has been arrested. The players told police they had been practicing for about 90 minutes before the robbery occurred.
