Title: Dreams for the Final Wurster Call
Post by: Mr. Spacely on October 30, 2013, 02:25:56 AM
Would love for Jon to call in as "himself," and announce he's moving to Newbridge. And then we slowly find out this version of Jon Wurster is, of course, complete human garbage.

Also would love to finally hear from other Scharpling Family Members (John, Shawn, Danny, and Lon) as well as the great Roy, Jr.

Addendum, 11/1/13: The more I think about the End of the Best Show, the more I'm bothered by the idea that Newbridge could possibly be destroyed in these final calls. I'd like to officially go on the meaningless-record as saying that it is my solemn hope the Best Show ends with Newbridge being perfectly fine (well, "fine" in its own, sick way) and chugging along in whatever alternate dimension it resides. This is because I care (again, in a kind of sick way) about all its fake denizens, but also because I really, really, REALLY hope that Tom & Jon continue making comedy, and Newbridge-centered comedy at that, whether in the form of a TV show or book, or more albums or some new, stripped-down "Tom Show" podcast that Tom starts in the future.

It should either be less than 10 seconds long or take up the whole three hours, I'm not sure which.

Weird. I have been envisioning exactly the same thing for many years. Which of course means that is not what will happen.

I have have written fanfiction about my ideal final twenty seconds.

Quote
Hot Rockin’ Ronnie pushes Tom Scharpling out of his chair. The night is December 17th. No, now it’s the 18th. With Tom on the floor making sounds of pain, Ronnie takes the microphone, “This has been Hot Rockin’ Ronnie gettin’ Hot Rockin’. Tuesday is now Wednesday, and I don’t WANNA go, but I GOTTA go. Stay tuned for Solid Gold Hell with Sue P.”

While the Best Show as we know it is ending I take comfort in the belief that Newbridge will go on even though we won't hear about it.

I'm hoping for something like the Mayubenatorial Debate, or the call from the future that updated everyone's life.

Or a call from Bryce that reveals that Newbridge was just a bong-clouded dream he had while listening to the Mothers play Jazz Fart at Red Rocks (1983).

I love the Hot Rocking Ronnie idea.

I actually think the final may not be so final, as I fully expect (i.e. pray for!) them to continue Newbridge on into the future in some way.

I hope the last part of the last show includes an in-person visit by Carl to disconnect Tom's voice modulator for the final time.

Hammerhead = Len Ploppleton = Darren's older brother; Darren = Tom's best friend. So...it's possible!

I always pictured Jon calling in as himself as well, and talking about Superchunk and saying he how has been hearing about the show for a while so he figured he'd check it out. Then, of course, it turns out he is human garbage.

That's three votes for Jon calling in as "himself" and being human garbage!

God, I really want this to happen now. I love the idea of Tom's Newbridge Persona being really excited to hear from the drummer for Superchunk. Maybe Superchunk is going to be playing at the Newbridge Commons to herald the opening of Captain's Cronuts.

Hot Rockin Ronny is so fitting for the last call, if not it should be Philly Boy Roy. I do like the idea of Jon calling in as himself.

Maybe not ideal for the FINAL call, but at some point in the next two months it would be funny for Jon to call in as Chuck Woolery or Gary Schandling (or someone who represents them-i.e. their agent/publicist/lawer) to settle their Twitter feud once and for all. It could either be an effort to make peace, or them gloating about the show ending. Either way, it would probably have to end with a death threat.

While the Best Show as we know it is ending I take comfort in the belief that Newbridge will go on even though we won't hear about it.

I was honestly worried about this, for fear of some scenario where Newbridge gets a nuke dropped on it, or some such terrible situation.  Hopefully it will live on, even if it's never directly addressed again, though making an occasional return in other various forms of media would be better.

Zach, I'm terrified Newbridge will be destroyed, too! I was just about to add a Note to the first post on this thread making my feelings known on the matter.  Because, you know, everyone cares what I think. /sarcasm. But still! I just want to go on the record as saying that I want Newbridge to live on, and in other media!

Since Tom is actually mayor of Newbridge I was thinking maybe his shoddy mayorsmanship would somehow destroy Newbridge, but I'd hope it was temporary.

This speculation is reminding me of the final season of Archie Bunker' s Place.

Would love to hear from Bryce. And also Juan Pablo Fontana, the popCulture-savvy archbishop of the Newbridge Archdiocese. There's too many loose threads to tie up in seven weeks, but I'm just gonna throw my 2¢ into the wind.

(and just hope that the wind is not so violent that it would cause mere pennies to cause indentations in the faces of those who would be in the path of pennies swept up by said wind).

If during the next WFMU marathon, the station offered a DVD set of all the Best Show episodes as a super premium to make up for no Best Show marathon shows, I think they would get a LOT of people making donations for that. I know I'd put down a lot of money for a chance to have these shows forever! Or maybe S&W will put something together to sell themselves?

while unlikely to say the least, some kind of "Under the Dome" situation seems fitting.  tom starts the show distraught, and over the 3 hours we come to find that Newbridge is not only traped under the dome, but the situation is is very grave, with Murace Kerns taking control big jim renny style.  i see this playing out in a sort of "War of the Worlds" kinda of radio drama.

More Best Show finale fan-fiction.

Tom glances up and down Muffler Row. He sighs. The street has seen better days. He has a jacket over his arm. Feeling cold he puts it on. It's a leather jacket. The type made famous by the Gorch. In a Sons-of-Anarchy style patch, it appears that the jacket is really a jock-jack for The Bridge.

Having finally graduated from high school radio onto terrestrial, he then climbs into his jockcopter. A 'Suicide is Painless'-esque version of Barry Dworkins' hit 'Rock and Roll Dreams'll Come Through' begins to play over the radio.

The helicopter takes off. Tom looks down over Newbridge as altitude is gained. It's like he's the last one to leave. Behind Newbridge Commons where the Lady Foot Locker use to be, there was no hut. Bryce was still in Australia.

As the helicopter continues to fly Tom continues to reminiscence. Out of the corner of his eyes he sees the rubble of where the Newbridge Debate Pavilion collapsed years before. Mayor Ziegler never sent in the cleanup crews. Tom knew there were bodies still probably underneath the pile.

He looked to where the Newbridge Little League Stadium use to be. That was the cause of this, he thought. "We should've listened to Mike....that kid was fat....he slid into the bomb....now everyone's gone."

No.  Philly Boy Roy will NOT be calling at any point during the final three episodes. His run on the program is over. The final S&W pieces will be a new character named "George Fuzzlichtner," Postal Slapfighter Keith Garfinkle and Pudge's sister, Gretchen Palfner.

I've discussed the issue with S & W, and they have assured me that they plan to work very hard (talk of cocaine-cronut all-nighters) to deliver some calls that meet your standards.  They are very concerned that you were displeased with The Gorch and Roger Scharpling. If they cannot come up with anything good, the show will end a week or two early.

Okay, so maybe I spoke too soon.  A little worried about what Darren's actions will have wrought, come December 18th.  Maybe Pudge will somehow save the day, as has been suggested.  Still, we haven't heard from Roy since the announcement, right?  I imagine, even having left the mayubenatorial duties with Tom, he will make one final return.  We shall see...

Reading every single "history of the Best Show" article leading up to tonight gave me an idea for the last caller. The last Wurster character is Smash, the MTV VJ. In every article about the show for years, Tom and Jon both mention this mystery dude that they both loved, but nobody else remembers. So perhaps Tom and Jon have been gaslighting us all for years, preparing for the final show. Sounds likely.

Neither Tom or Jon appear on the final show. The entire three hours will be presented from the perspective of three archaeologists seventy-five years from now who have just dug up a time capsule of recordings made by residents of the long-lost town of Newbridge.

A further epilogue at the end of the show features aliens digging up the remains of the archaeologists from the frozen wastes of the earth many thousands of years in the future, revealing the previous three hours to be a Trent L Strauss movie script as directed by Steven Spielberg.

It will be like the end of Bloom County, where Trump buys Milo's meadow, except it will be Chuck Woolery taking over Newbridge.
