Title: Future of The Best Show Archives
Post by: dave in the yard on October 30, 2013, 10:32:31 PM
A lot of people have been mentioning this on the boards.  Will The Best Show Archives stay up on wfmu.org?  This is really important information to have.

I can't think of a good reason why they wouldn't stay up there. Unless Tom wants them removed.

Bandwidth and maintenance.  It won't be a current show on the station.  I don't know if they maintain archives of other shows that aren't on the air anymore...

At the bottom of the WFMU archives page (http://wfmu.org/playlists) there is a lengthy list of "Alternate channel, Archival, Fill-in, Off-schedule, & Web-only programs". I would hope that the Best Show would find a permanent home there.

I would hope that the Best Show archive would stay online, and would think that Station management would see the value of driving traffic to the station's website.

That, and the Friends of Tom could make it clear that they still support the archive by donating to the still-extremely-worthy WFMU after the Best Show leaves its airwaves.

They do. Lots of them.

I'm happy listening to The Best Show however I can get it, but I hope for POSTERITY the higher-quality 128k mp3s are kept somewhere safe. Mel?

I still listen to The Hound.

Usually the only archives removed are at the request of the DJ (I still mourn OCDJ's shows removal) or because they've done something bad for the station, like that hacker who got a shortlived show, weev or whatever he was called.

Unless Tom wants them taken down they should stay on the site for now.

Adding to that, hopefully the Gems podcast will continue.

I asked Joe if the higher-ups would consider starting the Best Show feed from Episode #1 so that we could get something on iTunes for portable listening purposes. He thought it was a good idea and said he'd ask!

I'd love that. Would be great to catch back up on the 1st 5 or so years of the show. Hard to get thru that much if you can only listen to it while sitting at a computer. I'd be happy to pay $25 or so a year.

That would be amazing.

This just made my day. Hope this happens as it's an amazing idea. Would gladly donate/pay for such a service.

They have done the re-air for posterity thing for other FMU shows, most notably Steinski's "Rough Mix" show which they streamed once a week on the GTD radio stream.  It would be cool if that were able to happen for the Best Show too.  Btw, those Steinski archives are totally worth checking out guys :)

I'd also be more than willing to pay for a Best Show app, which was mentioned on here recently.

So, any idea whether the archives are going to stay up?

Based on the attention the show has gotten over the past 2 weeks (tons of ink!), I'd be absolutely shocked if they took them down now or in the near future.

And yes, I would pay plenty for an App for all the episodes (and am still holding out hope for a DVD box set like the first 100 episodes WTF set, only....bigger.)!

This would be awesome if it happened. Trying to listen to the first episodes from the Real Player is driving me bonkers. It won't let me fast forward, so I can't listen to a piece one night and then pick up where I left off the next. Grrrrrr.
