Tom Scharpling announced last month that his beloved, long-running radio show/podcast The Best Show on WFMU will be ending its run on December 17th after 13 years on the air, and it looks like the station has found a replacement. New Jersey-based station WFMU has tapped comedian Dave Hill to take over the Tuesday 9pm to midnight slot currently occupied by Best Show, Current.org reports. Hill and WFMU station manager Ken Freedman are still figuring out exactly what the comedian's untitled show will be, but it may include interviews.
"I think he’s really funny,” Scharpling said of Hill. "I’ll support him however I can. My goal is to finish up these shows and take a break." Freedman sought to find a replacement who previously had been a guest on Best Show and who would appeal to some of Scharpling's fanbase. Hill's show will presumably launch in early 2014.
For those unfamiliar with Dave Hill, he hosts a live show, The Dave Hill Explosion, at UCB NY, and a podcast, Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident, on the Maximum Fun network. His first book, a collection of essays called Tasteful Nudes, was released by St. Martin's last year. For more, you can read an interview we did Hill when the book was released.

Appeared on this show:
May 22, 2012: CHRIS GETHARD's worst idea ever. Atlantic City. Dumpster woes. Calls from Newbridge High class presidential candidate Mike Wilkens & his campaign manager, Kyle. Entertainer DAVE HILL, author of “Tasteful Nudes”, and comedian NICK FLANAGAN in studio!

I was hoping for Hodgman.

It's not a competition or anything, but I held Michael Jackson's wiener plenty of times too. Just saying.

Yeah. Not all that excited about this.
-
u kno what happens when a national treasure is replaed???
IT DIES
-
I was hoping for Hodgman.
I was hoping for Mike.
In fact, I think it's straight up insulting to Mike that it isn't Mike taking over.
If WFMU want to carry the audience over from TBS to a new shpw, then that would be how.
I know nothing at all about Dave Hill, never heard of him or anything he's done but now I'm starting off pissed at him, just because he isn't Mike.
Yes I know that is unreasonable.
-
Yes I know that is unreasonable.
Mike should have at least gotten a shot.
Valley Lodge is a good band.

I agree.
I'm willing to give Dave Hill a chance, but I do think that Mike was cheated here. He earned and deserved that time slot.
-
Yikes. Dave Hill rubs me the wrongest of ways. I would much rather hear Mike do a three-hour long recap of Dancing With the Stars.
-
Depravity's Rainbow could be the "Facts of Life" to the Best Show's "Diff'rent Strokes." Spinoff, baby! Hatch Patch is funny as hell too- perhaps the "Hello Larry" of this analogy.
Mike has been on some next level shi... er, stuff as of late- subtle one minute and clubbing listeners over the head the next. His book review of The Bible should be a Best Show Gem even though it wasn't on The Best Show.
-
Tasteful Nudes by Dave Hill: The Incredible Book Trailer Music Video (cleaner version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb3NaYRlfIs#)
"Tasteful Nudes, it's a book I wrote all by myself. Tasteful Nudes, it makes the Great Gatsby seem like bullsh*bleep*."
Can't wait. SO funny.
And yeah, Mike got robbed. After watching that dreck, watch the AP Mike Day video. The difference in quality is incredible.
Also, how the hell does this clown (who someone the other night in a chat far far away referred to as "a gay Oscar Wilde") get a book deal? Why doesn't AP Mike have a book deal?

Yeah. Not all that excited about this.
It's not about who the host of the new show is. It's about losing Tom. The show is Tom, Tom's what I want, Tom is what I will miss. There is only one Tom.
I love Mike too and would love to hear him on the radio post-Tom but at the end of the day it's all about Tom. I'm really going to miss Tom!
But I'm sure Tom will be podcasting or something. Why would you abandon the thing that makes you great and that everybody loves you for?
-
I hope Mike is still on the air with another show.
-

They couldn't get Nancy Mckean to replace Therese so they gave up this idea.
-
Therese and Mike have a fantastic repartee. Plus, adding DP to the roster would contribute to an increased gender balance. WFMU's ladies are heavy hitters, I know there are many more out there.
I'm gonna give Dave Hill a chance- listening to his podcast right now. Not bad...

Adding to the chorus for Therese & Mike. I loved their shows.
Happy Dave Hill is coming to FMU though--hope he does whatever the F he wants and doesn't try to pay homage to what Tom built though. you start with your own blank piece of paper.
How about our own industrial magic. Deserves a big platform too. I'd like at last one show of someone reading posts/tweets from him (or her).

Yep. I don't see his charm at all.
-
Does anyone know if Mike even wants to host a 3 hour show every week? Might be putting the cart before the horse with this "Mike got screwed!" talk.
-

You raise a valid point.
Perhaps Mike had no interest in doing a weekly show.
-
Would the FCC allow a weekly Mike show?
-
There was encouraging talk of a podcast in the chat.
-
Can we please get this thread back on track with more praise of Mike? Thank you.

You're God's gift to radio, Mike.
-
Is there some sort of formal way for us to band together and request a weekly spot for Depravity's Rainbow? Not feeling this Dave Hill as the solution to our post-Tom needs (no offense)

First impression from those videos is that he seems to nice, hopefully we wont have a Pete Holmes situation on our hands.
I wonder if he will call in and get Tom to bless him.
-
I'm a big Dave Hill booster. The overbearing asshole persona is transparent posturing that is really funny once you're in on the joke, much like a certain someone's prickly grouchiness. Tasteful Nudes is a very funny book, and he seems like a class act.
I *do* think, if he's willing, that Mike should stay on board with Dave... I think they'd make a good pair, and that Dave would play off Mike's weirdness well. With Mike's blessing, we should definitely lobby for it.
Overall, it won't be TBS - nothing ever will be - but it's got promise to be a solid followup in whatever form his show takes (also, let's face it - odds are, Spike will call in within the first month, and it'll be unclear if he'll know if anything has changed).
-

Pony up a huge donation to the station in the name of Depravity's Rainbow. 200 grand oughta do it.
-
Mike, whatta ya wanna do? What would you like see happen? Stay on as a sidekick, be the fill- in show with Therese, take a much needed extended chiku break, or host your own 3 hr show (which I would happily listen to weekly because there's nothing like you anywhere in the entertainmentverse)???
-
Very surprised but very happy about this announcement. Valley Lodge are awesome, as are his other bands, which maybe is a cause for concern as he might need more fill-in shows than Andy Breckman. He just got a third album out and tours around. So Mike I'm sure will still be called on often to help with the slot.
But really I'm glad it's someone who is familiar with WFMU, he played a bunch of times with bands on Evan's show, those are worth searching out, and has his own funny podcast (which I guess is ending now?) which has been very good. So he has the experience and as someone already said he has charm, you just need to give it a chance. Surely it's safe to say that for a lot of people it was the same way with Tom.
Oh also in common... friends with John Hodgman, so he won't become a stranger to the WFMU airwaves even after Tom goes.
-
For the doubters.
Ask a Grown Man: Dave Hill on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/38794436)
-
Doubters as in people who doubt that he's unfunny, right? That video was horrendous.
-
I reserve my judgement until I hear what he does once he's had a little time to settle into the show.
-
Doubters as in people who doubt that he's unfunny, right? That video was horrendous.
No doubt, he's a snooze.
-
No one is "replacing" Tom. There is no replacing Tom. It's just a time slot, and Tom had different time slots before. If this Dave Hill thing ends up being one more show on WFMU I can't stand then so be it. There's still plenty to like.
And I co-sign all the praise of Mike.
-
Hey Mike, how about a show called "Bayonne or Bust"? ;) ;)
-
Instead of coming together to block Dave Hill, can we come together to do something positive like giving tons of money to WFMU during next year's marathon?
-
Why are you guys so whiny? LOL.
-
Dave Hill f'n RULES!
I'm 100% behind this. Sorry that a lot of you guys hate him so much.
And I'm actually surprised that a lot of you guys hate him so much. I started listening to the Best Show (like 8 or 9 years ago) cos the humour was right up my alley & I've been following Dave Hill for many years cos his humour/music is right up said alley. And Tasteful Nudes is one of the funniest books I've read in years.
Chill out, homies. It's gonna be okay!! 8)
Signed,

As I said, I'm more than willing to give him a chance. I just hope that Mike will still be on the airwaves in some capacity, whether it's as part of Dave's show or perhaps getting a timeslot of his own at some point in the not too distant future. Maybe even a podcast?
-
A Mike Show podcast would be amazing.
-
It would be. It seems it might make more sense than a show on WFMU, too. "Hard G" could be too constraining for such an NC-17 personality.
-
I guess the chances are slim to none that everything will stay the same the Newbridge scenarios, Jon Wurster calling in, but Tom is replaced by this Dave Hill.
-
I will just let Dave Hill do his thing and see how it goes. I've heard him on several podcasts (plus the Best Show) and he seemed likeable enough.
That said I will be very sad if we never hear from AP Mike again. I hope he is still involved in WFMU in some way, although if as the occasional fill-in host I hope everybody gets the word out when he's on so I don't miss it.
-
I hope everybody gets the word out when he's on so I don't miss it.
Where?
-
Not a fan of Dave Hill, but I'm willing to give his show a shot.
I think a full time Depravity's Rainbow show would have been awesome, but maybe the station isn't looking for a spinoff, and who even knows if Mike would have even wanted to do it.
I do hope that Mike is involved in Tom's future plans in some way. Their rapport is my favorite thing about the show and he makes a perfect foil for Tom.
Who knows what either of them have planned going forward though.
-
I hope everybody gets the word out when he's on so I don't miss it.
Where?
On the streets. 'Word on the street is Mike is on the air Monday at 9pm', that kind of thing.
-
Did Night People get axed? Once I eased into it, that show revealed itself as a top-notch gab fest.
-
Mike's not the only part of Depravity's Rainbow. Therese has a show on FMU. It's nearly thee hours of great tunes followed by the beginning of "All Talk with Therese & Amedeo."

"Dave Hill's WFMU Show Will Be Called 'The Goddamn Dave Hill Show'" (http://splitsider.com/2013/12/dave-hills-wfmu-show-will-be-called-the-goddamn-dave-hill-show-debuts-january-7th/)
His show hasn't even started yet and this guy's already a toilet mouth.
-
I don't really mind toilet mouthing -- fuck, shit, motherfucker, whatever -- but ugh, that title.

Seeing the photo, hearing his interview... man it's starting to hit me that IT'S OVER. I'm curious what he'll do and check it out for a while but my expectations for Dave Hill's show are about as low as his energy.
-
In case you missed it, the last Seven Second Delay was devoted to sorta introducing him as a radio personality. Seemed like a nice enough guy, not unfunny, but I was left with no sense whatever of how he'll do at sustaining a three-hour show week after week.
-
I can't believe the hate in this thread. I'm not even sure I'd be this mad if Seth Green took over the slot and kept the name "The Best Show on WFMU."
Give it a chance, if you don't like it, whatever. It's not that different than if Dave Hill got a WFMU slot on Sundays at noon. No one here would blink, and I'm sure plenty of people would enjoy the show anyway.
I listened to Dave Hill's practice run of sorts on Seven Second Delay, and thought it was pretty funny. His on-air personality is very different from Tom's, but he still has one.
EDIT: Just realized this was my first post, guess I'd just been lurking for a while. I promise I'm not Dave Hill.
-

Sunday afternoons belong to Jonesy and X-Ray. An outstanding show with listeners all over da world. Glen is a radio legend.
-
I'm being overwhelmingly negative because he's an unfunny douche. Just read his Twitter feed. He sucks.
But whatever. Just because he has Tom's time slot doesn't mean he's Tom's substitute. He's just some idiot with a terrible show (I presume it'll be terrible, anyway) on WFMU. Whatever.
-
.
But whatever. Just because he has Tom's time slot doesn't mean he's Tom's substitute.
And this sums it up whatever you think of him. It's a radio show unrelated to Tom or anything he's done. Give it a shot. Or don't.
-
Just heard Dave Hill on Seven Second Delay...not too shabby, I liked him. No, he's not 'the replacement', it's just a time slot and for the most part I would only listen to the Best Show on the internet the next day to listen to at work so the Tuesday night slot isn't woven into my memories of listening. Obviously, Dave brings a different style and energy but he's engaged and I like his taste in music.
-
Re the first David Hill program, I love the idea of an on-hold Dick Cavett listening to Phil Anselmo refer to one of the new members of Down as "fatter than Pig Champion, may he rest in peace."
-
It was okay. A lot of toilet talk (as was to be expected) and even the flushing of a toilet at one point. The back-to-back calls by Phil Anselmo and Dick Cavett (who both seemed drunk and/or high) were amusing. I loved this exchange: Dick Cavett advises Dave Hill not to play down to his audience; Dave Hill says he did indeed play Down (the band) to his audience; Jon Benjamin chimes in, saying, "Same thing."
I don't think Dave Hill is funny at all, but if he can get interesting FPs on his show on a regular basis, "The Goddamn Dave Hill Show" (ugh) will be something I can listen to.
-
I never got into his podcast but I do find Dave Hill's "fashion week" videos to be very funny, so I'm willing to give him some time to find a voice on live radio, which is a totally different medium/energy level.
-
I also hope Spike somehow slithers his way onto the show.
-
Whats and FP?
-
Famous person.
-
It was decent. A bit awkward, but it's to be expected for the first time around. I'll give it a few more weeks, but I'd say there's a good chance that I'll listen to the show regularly, but not live. I already use the WFMU app daily anyway, so this is another show that I'll download off the archive and listen to at work, but I'm not setting aside Tuesday nights to listen to the show live unless I've got nothing else going on.
-
Haven't listened to the full episode, but so far im disappointed Tom didn't call in and wish him good luck or even shout him out on twitter.
-
Dave Hill probably didn't kiss the ring. Or he kissed the ring, but did so while farting or soiling himself or whatever it is he does.
-
Haven't listened to the full episode, but so far im disappointed Tom didn't call in and wish him good luck or even shout him out on twitter.
Tom's said plenty of times that he likes Dave and he wished him well in the release I posted at the start of the thread.
-
Dick Cavett was a pretty cool guest, Best Show or Goddamn Dave Hill Show.
-
The less said about yesterday evening's show, the better.

And I forgot to mention that not only was the show a hot heap of garbage, but was also really boring. You will get nothing out of listening to the archive.

He should be referred to only as "that guy" or "some guy." He's lost the privilege of having a name.
