Bob Grant died on New Year's Eve. He was a right-wing talk show host in NYC for decades who arguably invented the format. He was famous for yelling "Get off my phone!" at callers who disagreed with him, and exhorting listeners to "Get Qaddafi" while signing off from his show.
According to the May 29, 2011 edition of NY Magazine, Tom "...became a fan of Howard Stern and Bob Grant, a talk-radio right-winger whom Scharpling abhorred politically but admired as a broadcaster. “Grant made the show fit him,” he says. “He did not try to fit into the talk-radio-show [format].”

Thanks for making this connection. Hey, check out this clip where Bob Grant threatens Alec Baldwin. I think it will delight anyone who enjoyed Tom's challenge to the Zodiac Killer. There's also a GOMP after about 15:10.

It speaks very well of Tom's powers of discrimination and focus that he was able to put aside his disagreements with what Bob Grant said and find something there in Grant's use of the medium to take inspiration from.
That said, Grant was pretty much a shitbird.

I agree. A brief Google search reveals Bob Grant's world of hatemongering. For such an entertaining gentleman of the old broadcasting tradition, he sure was cool with a lot of crypto-KKK guys.

I feel like Tom is the complete opposite of everyone on this show (morton included) while somehow also being a perfect distillation of all of them combined.
