For the first time ever thanks to Flannelgraph and Light in the Attic!
Scharpling & Wurster /// Rock, Rot & Rule /// RSD 2014 Announcement on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/86865061)
Limited edition red vinyl limited to 1,000 for Record Store Day, black vinyl due this summer.

Records - RULE
Record Stores - ROCK
Record Store Day - ROT

I am curious... will it have a side a and side b? Will it only be the one call? Will it be only on one side? Does anyone know?
-
Sweet!
-
Hi!
To answer your question, the call is divided into the first 23:36 for Side A and the last 23:29 for Side B. The break comes after Clontle says "I totally disagree" to a caller.
-
Definitely sounds worth seeking out.
-
excuse my RSD ignorance, but is there any way to know which stores will have this? I'm worried the odds of me finding one in Dallas are pretty low :(

short answer: No.
longer answer: You can find out which stores in your area are participating but they typically wont say what they have/aren't allowed to, so you just have to show up and hope for the best. RSD is basically just a giant pain in the ass, because it makes going to the record store not fun, between the queuing up for hours, not even knowing what they have, and jerk bags buying up stuff the store did have that you wanted, that they don't want and buy just to sell on eBay when they get home.
At least with this Rock, Rot & Rule release, there's a non RSD issue coming later in the year, so there's the option to wait for that instead

Hi, clearly we've never met ;)
-
for others nowhere near a record store, like myself, I asked Light in the Attic (who is distroing) and they said they would have copies on their site for sale for RSD as well, but that they would go fast.
-
I don't suppose anyone knows if this'll be making it to the UK?
-
As someone who works at a record store, a pressing of a 1000 is a pretty decent run, but as Record Store Day is becoming an uncontrollable beast in a lot of ways (good and bad), if you are interested in getting this and live near an applicable store, I can't stress enough that you should pester them to order copies now and not assume they'll have them. There's so much stuff to choose from and lots of stores don't have unlimited budgets, so I know that for us we order stuff based on demand prior to the day. If the store orders it they should be able to get at least a few copies no problem.

Nice to see around again, John.
-
I'll have to try emailing the two semi-local record stores in my part of the world, maybe one of them can try ordering if they weren't planning on it already.
Nice to see around again, John.
Thanks Fredericks, I do pop in occasionally but sadly someone had stolen my keyboard so I couldn't type anything. That previous sentence may have contained a lie.

I'll guess: "I do pop in occasionally".
AmIRight?

It was the "Thanks Fredericks" part, I'm really an ungrateful little git.

I'm still grateful for my logo.

I will be ordering a few at my little record store in Nashville. The only other thing I've heard about this RSD is a 10" box set of soundgarden's superunknown, circling the drain much RSD?

Which store in Nashville is yours?

The Flaming Lipz are releasing more junk!

Jon posted this on Facebook today!
I don't have a turntable so I am deferring to Tom regarding approval of this test pressing. He's a stickler for appropriate low end on speech-only recordings but hopefully he'll sign off in time for Record Store Day.

Only CASSettes for JW.

I work for Mckay books, we are so small we're barely on the map.

Not worthy of its own thread so I'll ask here, but I was just wondering if any of the historians here knew if the released version of R-Squared was unedited and if not whether the full version has ever been circulated in some form. It always sounded like there were cuts (especially around the Madness parts), but I wasn't sure if it was just the quality of the recording.
-
R-Cubed?
-
This general topic has come up several times - do a search for "unedited" on the message board and you'll see some posts about it.
To my knowledge, an unedited version of "Rock, Rot and Rule" has never been released.
I don't know either of the gentlemen personally, but I do know that JW cut the calls for the CDs. Some of the unavailable-episode calls exist online, but most ("The Gorch," an unreleased part of which is played in a later episode) don't.
Neither Mr. Scharpling nor Mr. Wurster, to my knowledge, has ever indicated that releasing the uncut CD calls are of particular interest to them. Often, the people doing the cutting consider the edited versions to be superior.
Rabid completists (including me) are probably the only ones who care. I'd love to hear the full Gorch and Jeff Cooper calls someday, but I'm not holding my breath.

In terms of editing the calls for the CDs, I am aware of one case in which a call was edited for possible inclusion on one of the releases, but the edited version was ultimately not included because the cuts were too deep (it was going to be a struggle to get it to fit on the disc) to allow the call in question to fully bloom, especially since it would have been a major character's CD debut.
-
There are two unedited versions of CD tracks floating around out there that I know of: the Todd and the Audio Guru calls and Mike Healy's first call.
-
I have an unedited Mike Healy, an unedited Mother 13 (with the original song clips and maybe some extra dialogue?) and I also think -- but am not certain -- an unedited Gorch and Chippert Report on the same disc. I'll have to check on those last two to confirm.
-
OK, looks like it's just the standard Gorch that I have, but Chippert Report is indeed a lot longer. Includes discussion of his book called "A Chippert Off the Old Rock." ("The expression is 'block,' not 'rock.'" "Well I don't write about blocks. I write about rock.")
I've got a much longer "Tom's Daddy," too.
And a "Kid eBay" that seems to have an extra 15 minutes or so.
-
well even though this thread turning into an interesting discussion of un-edited versions of S&W calls, I thought i'd mention that Rock Rot & Rule will be out on BLACK vinyl later this summer for those who can't make record store day or prefer black vinyl.
-
So who picked it up today? I had no such luck here in Brooklyn. I went to Rough Trade, and by the time I waited through the 2 hour line, someone snatched up the 1 copy that they carried in stock. Oh well!
-
I found one left at Vertigo in Ottawa, Canada. Judging by Twitter, a lot of people were not able to get one in their local establishments.
-
Turn It Up! Records in Northampton, MA didn't get any copies, apparently. Newbury Comics across the street didn't have any either, but I wasn't really expecting them to. They might have been gone by the time I got there; I wasn't especially on a mission, what with the non-RSD release forthcoming.
-
Check with Flannelgraph Records who put it out. There were plenty of copies at Landlocked today.
-
I picked up a copy at SULLIVAN'S RECORDS in Charleston, W.Va. I was home for Easter weekend. Dude who runs that store is so nice. He had ordered a copy because I had asked him to. Not really a pre-order since it's first-come, first-serve, but it's pretty ace of him to do that.
The worst part about being back on campus is my copy is now 50+ miles away from me. It's so beautiful.
-
i got one from Good Records in Dallas and one from CD Source. One of them has a ding'd corner from being dropped, and I would probably sell it to an FoT. My cost plus shipping only :)
-
I nabbed a copy from Fond Object in Nashville, then hung around long enough to meet the man himself.
Best Record Store Day ever!

I probably touched the copy you bought at Good Records [that sounds really creepy...but there it is]. I was there all night Friday helping unbox and shelve stuff; I also inflated a few hundred balloons.
-
Camped out at my local store and snagged one. The whole experience was just incredible. Hanging out with some music nerds for hours and hours to get a special release. Good people.
And the red vinyl is beautiful. Anyone know if the "Time will vindicate me" notation will be on the black vinyl?
-
I scored the first of five copies they had at Academy Records in Brooklyn. Got in line a little before 8:00 (store opened at 10:00), I was the 4th person there. Line at Rough Trade was already down the block by that point.
-
To people who scored a copy, how much did yours cost? I unfortunately couldn't get one but I was wondering what a fair price was.
-
i got one for 20 and one for 25

I didn't realize the Dallas contingent of The Best Show was so strong. I called Forever Young Records in Grand Prairie and they said they weren't getting a copy. I figured any copies at Good Records or CD Source would be well gone.
-
CD Source is the worst, what a shithole. With the exception of one extremely helpful and nice young lady, the employees are unhelpful pricks. Also, did I mention the corner was a bit crunched? Extremely lucky I found two copies :)

Landlocked music in Bloomington got a few more copies in yesterday. Supposedly they can do mail orders if you email them your info. landlockedmusic.com

I believe I paid $25

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The guy that owns CD Source is one of the biggest jerks I've ever encountered.
I got my copy at Good Records for $20.

I can't seem to send PMs, or at least nothing is showing up in my "sent messages". Is anyone else having the same issue? If the member who is interested in my copy could contact me via email, I would appreciate it. My username here at gmail :)
-
Just fyi, I have a copy for sale. $25 (my cost) plus shipping. If you're interested let me know. I'll eventually list it somewhere else, probably, but I'd love for someone here to get one if they want. Pics above, cover got a tad crunched. vinyl is unplayed.
-
i still can't seem to send PMs so if the people interested could please email me I'd appreciate it very much

Sold! I apologize for spamming the thread but I really did try to PM :)

is the audio kinda sped up on the LP?

Hi!
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on the pre-order for the black edition of this.
The 150g black vinyl will be released on July 29th. Light In The Attic will be distributing it for us, so it should be available at your local record store.
But if you would like to order one directly from us at flannelgraphrecords.com you can do so beginning this Thursday, July 10th!
xoxo
