Personally I think it would be best if it remained Hard-R (especially if open lines are still part of the show) but maybe just a bit softer than WFMU Hard-R.

By "Hard R" you mean "PG?" (PG-13 at most?)
I only know The Best Show from 2011 on, but I had the impression that Tom kept it clean for more than just FCC reasons. Like there was nobility in it- or at least a challenge, considering that obscenity is an obvious crutch for some comics. I could have it all wrong. I hope that aspect of the show doesn't change, though. Some of what made the Newbridge stuff so brilliant was how they painted such warped pictures with only euphemism, innuendo, and timing.

As a fan of the sloppy bleeping on the Bugle which since the show's independence from the Times is in no longer a requirement enforced by anyone, I agree that a respectful understanding of the power of toilet talk can make stuff funnier whether you use the filth language or not. I do think it will be less of a headache for everybody if the occasional guest drops the occasional f-bomb and no listener-funded cultural treasure is put in danger because of it.

Yep, it bewilders me that some people don't grasp the concept that free reign to say anything doesn't equal comedy genius, and like you said, working within parameters can actually lead to hilarious euphemisms and workarounds. And we even have Scharpling/Wurster stuff to analyze, I'm not nearly as big a fan of the filthier uncensored stuff like the Mike Sajak call. Just doesn't seem to work in the same way.
I remember having this debate with people about Arrested Development when it was supposed to be picked up by Showtime way back in the day. Some folks genuinely did not understand how hilarious the bleeping was and how it made the dialogue 10x funnier than an uncensored line would've been.

This is kind of a random example, but on Candid Camera Allen Funt claims he tried to bleep people who who saying perfectly innocent and broadcast friendly epithets just because it was funnier that way. The network wouldn't let him and forced him to uncensor the words.
I could be wrong, but Tom (& Jon) never seemed like the type who would start cursing just because he could so I don't see the content changing dramatically.

Good find. Can't believe that hasn't shown up here before. I have an old mp3 called "Crop Circle Complaint" aimed at the show "History's Mysteries" that mines similar territory, only I think that one includes real anger.

Hey, dude, uh, I don't know what your (f...) problem is, but,uh, I saw your tweet last night and it was pretty (f...) sarcastic about, uh, a lot of the stuff I was writin' on Twitter.
I was writin' some real (f...) funny (s...) about the Manhunt, and some boat stuff, and I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy, uh, tone, Bro. We're all in this business together, ah, I think you'd (f...) realize that we're, uh, basically, uh, uh, co-workers or brothers-in-arms, or whatever you want to (f...) call it, ah, but I don't appreciate you being a piece of (s...) just kind of (f...) raining down negativity on something while I'm trying to make some (f...) jokes about something that's (f...) funny, which is the Manhunt.
We had a sad enough Monday, and now it's time to laugh at the Manhunt, you (f...) piece of (s...)!
