Title: Unironic Wrestling Fans
Post by: JeffertonFromTX on February 07, 2015, 03:43:26 PM
I was in the chat the other day during a show and I saw someone ribbing someone else about the upcoming Royal Rumble but it was toward the end of the show and I never got a chance to fully get in on the conversation.

Basically, my wife won't even try to get into it so I can only talk to people on the internet about wrestling and I figured that all of you would be less likely to be your average (mutant) wrestling fan.

Maybe this is a thread more suited to the Mike and his Ilk board...

I'd swear there was another wrestling thread on here, but I'm up for a new one. I'm really looking forward to the NXT special this Wed. NXT is reason enough to pay my 9.99 for the WWE Network every month.

I watched wrestling up till around when WWE bought ECW and things started going downhill for me. I still watch one in a while but don't keep up with the story lines. I actually watch old matches on youtube though.  recently watched the bloody pat patterson vs sgt slaughter match

Stoked for the NXT special this week. Pissed that FOT and NXT Superstar Aiden English will likely not be a part of it.

I got into WWF when Shawn Michaels became the commissioner in the late '90s. I left around the time Bischoff came to TV. Watched off and on around the time the "new" ECW started up, and really picked it up again in 2011/2012. I probably have a Tazz shirt in storage somewhere from middle school.

Oh, man, YES! This is exactly what I wanted.

NXT has become my main justification for getting back into and staying into wrestling now. I had heard about it vaguely before last year's Rumble and started watching again seriously after year's huge blowup due to the result and CM Punk's subsequent walk out, but where the main roster has left me feeling a bit cold, NXT has always been amazing.

Do you guys watch any other promotions like PWG or New Japan? Because a buddy of mine started sending me links to New Japan stuff and I've been pretty damn into it since. This year's Wrestle Kingdom might be one of my favorite shows I've ever seen.

I got into it around the Network's launch. It's the reason I subscribe, more or less. I wish it were kept as a separate brand, touring and such in conjunction with the main roster. I frequently worry about what will happen when Zayn/Owens/Neville/Itami/Balor/Vaudevillains/Banks/Charlotte/Bailey get called up, because they're better than 95% of the main roster and they get to show their strengths at NXT. I doubt they'll be able to do the same when they're on Raw.

I sadly do not. I try to see local shows around Brooklyn, which happen pretty often, but I rarely get to go to them. I'll eventually check out Wrestle Kingdom.

Yes, we should all support Aiden English aka Dumm Oaf. FOT and a very good wrestler with a great gimmick. On his interview on Austin's podcast HHH basically said that NXT is his baby and if you don't like Raw it's Vince's fault. I also dread the current NXT crew getting called up. To me Tyson Kidd has a sweet deal. He gets to be on Raw and he also gets to actually wrestle and be a part of the storylines on NXT.

Every year PWG has a 5 DVDs for $40 deal and that's become my main conduit into the Indy scene. Their BoLA and DDT 4 tourneys are always great.

Man, this thread has already become a goldmine. Once I figure out how to embed videos, I'll start posting some amazing New Japan stuff on here. It is truly some next level in-ring storytelling.

ALSO, I'm glad to see a lot of PWG and NXT love on here. When I first started getting back into wrestling, the same buddy that pointed me toward New Japan also sent me a few PWG and Chikara matches and that's how I first saw the Young Bucks, Steen, The Colony, Chuck Taylor, and Cesaro. A lot of amazing stuff there.

I also really worry about NXT stars getting the call up and getting completely buried, like the Ascension, but then again I think Rusev is 1000% a face so what do I know. Some of the new guys, like Devitt, are main event ready now, but for some reason since Vince still has final call, they all get saddled with trash gimmicks or just completely ignored. I almost want them to bring back the brand split just so they stay in their own little pocket and just randomly show up to upset the balance of the main roster, ala Nexus. I read an interesting bit of fantasy booking that cast Cena has having some PTSD due to Nexus and that's why he actively fears anyone who isn't him or the four other guys working main events.

Annnnnnnnnnyway, how ABOUT Tyson Kidd? That guy has become one of my favorite workers in the whole company this last year. I'm kicking myself that I hadn't been watching him before.

He needs to be used more on TV. The Vaudevillians should get the tag titles for at least bit and show their strength in longer matches.

He's also the only reason my girlfriend will watch wrestling with me. During Royal Rumble, she asked if the Vaudevillians were going to show up. I had to tell her "probably not for another year or so." :/

Oh, man, that just broke my heart to even think about him entering a Rumble. I'm just sitting down to watch the newest NXT special now. I'm really hoping that during the Tag Titles match we get some Vaudevillians shenanigans and at least see one perfect senton from English.

I said I would post some stuff, and I finally figured out how to do it. SO let's start with a SUPERKICK PARTY.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V_aTFBEWFM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V_aTFBEWFM#)

Kevin Steen vs. Shinsuke Nakamura from ROH: War of the Worlds '14. Nakamura is, bar none, the coolest man on the planet. Him sidestepping Steen's apron senton like its nothing is one of my favorite moments in wrestling.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf3Zc65uRN0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf3Zc65uRN0#)

Daniel Bryan and Cesaro tagging against Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw from a Chikara event in 2009. I desperately want to see a Chikara event live. It looks like heaven.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1QzDuhGLbE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1QzDuhGLbE#)

This is just a super funny sequence to remind everyone how great Kenny Omega is. This is from PWG last year. ACH hits a stunner and Omega pretends to be the Rock.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUO1opfLY7U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUO1opfLY7U#)

And, finally, some Great Muta vs. Liger, because we all love great things.

Hey! I'm new to the Best Show, new to the board, but I'm a long time wrestling fan.

I have been to over 100 wrestling shows live, have been to Ring of Honor many, many times, been to Chikara, been to several wwe house shows, Raws and pay per views, including the last three Wrestlemanias. I got to meet Daniel Bryan back in 2008 (when he was still known as Bryan Danielson, which was pretty awesome because he's been my favorite wrestler since 2006) after a ROH show in New York at the Hammerstein Ballroom. He's such a great guy and I love all the success he's had. I actually was at the show when he won his first World Heavyweight Championship at TLC 2011, and I was at the Wrestlemania where he lost the belt. I also got to see him win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WM 30. I also met Cesaro a couple years before he was hired by wwe.

I wanted to be a wrestler since I was 10 years old, and actually did so for a little while, before realizing that I wasn't physically cut out to take all the punishment that those guys endure. It stinks that I couldn't do it for a living, but at least I went for it. Better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all, eh? At least I got to train with Chris Hero several times, and since he's one of my favorite wrestlers it made it all the more special to me.

But yeah, I'm probably the biggest wrestling nerd around these parts. I'd be seriously surprised to find someone as nerdy as me when it comes to wrestling. I mean, the last two years I counted every single wrestling match I watched and the total for both years was over 1200.

Anybody into the Botchamania/OSW Review scene? That's been my ticket back into wrestling fandom. Specifically, watching old Rumbles, Wrestlemanias, and This Tuesday in Texas from the late 80's and early 90's. Gimme Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth in the ring, and my former governor Jesse Ventura as the heel commentator any day. No one cuts a promo like Randall Savage.

I keep up to date on the current scene, although Cena being generally repellent and the hard, hard push for Reigns are just too much to bear. Thanks, Vince.

One of the most fun weekends I ever had as a wrestling fan was going to the 2012 King of Trios. The atmosphere at Chikara shows is absolutely amazing. The fans have so much fun and that makes the show so much more fun. If you can ever get to a Chikara show, I would suggest going. It's definitely worth it.

Anybody into the Botchamania/OSW Review scene?

I just recently started watching Botchamania and now I can't get enough of it. I haven't watched much OSW Review, but what I've seen of it I have really enjoyed.

Chikara is a thing I kinda stumbled upon after I started watching NXT because someone had told me that my new favorite Face Sami Zayn was also a masked, orphanage running lucador named El Generico and that led me to a bunch of Chikara stuff, which THEN led to me loving Chuck Taylor, The Spectral Envoy, Colt Cabana, and The Colony. I have read stuff about King of Trios and some of their other tournaments and it just sounds like an absolute blast. As a matter of fact, one of the best pieces I've ever read about wrestling period was Danielle Matheson's piece for Uproxx about that Joshi trio that made it to the finals last year, I think. It reminded me of everything that I love about wrestling.

As for the new crop, I really just pick my favorites and kinda try to suppress my hatred for some of the other junk I hate. For every time Reigns looks really strong and Cena kicks out at two and behaves like the sadistic heel that he actually is, I just remind myself that Samoa Joe is coming back to ROH, Shinsuke Nakamura is still the coolest mammajamma on the face of the planet, and that Lucha Underground is still blowing the doors off the El Rey Network.

Awesome, thanks Jefferton!

This is my all time favorite match, Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit from the 2003 Royal Rumble. I think it's as perfect as wrestling can get as an art form. The intensity that both guys always show, but even more so against one another, brings the best out of one another in what I think is their best encounter. They had several ridiculously good matches against one another, but this takes the cake for me. What do you guys think of this match? Have any of ya seen it?

I actually hadn't seen this one before, but you are right, Beniot and Angle always tore it up when they wrestled. They were both so technically sound and were master storytellers in the ring. I've been watching some of his New Radicals stuff and I had forgotten how much I loved that angle.

Oh man. Here is a gem for ya.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYv8z9TVcKY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYv8z9TVcKY#)

Do you know Mitsuharu Misawa? In my opinion he's the greatest wrestler of all time. He had a ridiculous run in ajpw, putting on 5 star match after 5 star match after 5 star match. He is the dude in the green here, facing Jumbo Tsuruta, another of the all time greats. Jumbo was THE MAN in All Japan Pro Wrestling throughout the 70s and 80s and wasn't about to let some young punk come in and take his place. Misawa and Jumbo feuded for two years, and the only reason the feud ended was because Jumbo got Hepatitis and had to cut back from wrestling.

Man I could seriously talk about this feud for days. It was so freaking good and it involved SO MANY WRESTLERS. Their feud helped out several of the best young up and coming wrestlers on the roster like Toshiaki Kawada, Kenta Kobashi and Akira Taue. Those three along with Mitsuharu Misawa went on to become the three aces of All Japan throughout the 90s, every one of them held the All Japan Triple Crown Championship, ajpw's world title. In the 90s All Japan had this revolutionary policy of having their main event title matches end in a clean finish, no lousy disqualification endings or stupid double count outs. It made the championship and the wrestlers and the wrestling in the ring mean so much more. In my opinion the King's Road style that these guys utilized during the 90s is the greatest style of wrestling. I mean, if you look at the matches that Dave Meltzer rated 5 stars it has these dudes all over it. He also rated more Misawa matches 5 stars than any other wrestler.

Seriously, check out this list:

http://starratingslist.blogspot.com/2009/09/wrestling-observer-5-star-ratings-list.html (http://starratingslist.blogspot.com/2009/09/wrestling-observer-5-star-ratings-list.html)

How many of those matches have you seen? I've seen just about everything on that list, some of them many, many times.

Misawa was a legit legend. I haven't seen a lot of his stuff but I have seen a bunch of his matches with Kobashi and they were always barnburners. I am really tempted to subscribe to New Japan World because I am pretty sure they have the All Japan tape library.

Also, random, but the anime Space Dandy did a wrestling episode and Misawa was one of the main wrestler characters featured.

Did you see their match from Noah in 2003? One of my all time favorites. It's got one of the craziest spots I've ever seen in it. Kobashi tiger suplexes Misawa from the ramp to the floor.

I did, yeah. I think it is unfair of people to place that solely on Rey's shoulders, but still, it is a tragedy all the same.

Last I heard, they had ruled the cause of death as a stroke brought on by whiplash because the ropes were too tight. I feel bad for people in the crowd honestly because Owen Hart's death is still burned onto my skull. I watched that PPV live and it was just a horrific experience.

The video from that Rey Mysterio thing is absolutely disturbing.

Chikara is the best. There are actually a bunch of total comedy nerds in Chikara. Their ref/announcer dude Bryce is a founding member of Philly's oldest sketch comedy group. A bunch of those dudes do the wrestling show at UCB and the like. Ultramantis also has his own hardcore band these days. And at least some of the members of the great Pissed Jeans were early Chikara wrestlers, too.

I hosted a comedy tribute to pro wrestling a few years ago. I co-hosted with Colt Cabana. Cesaro (then Claudio Castiglione) and Sara Del Rey judged the first annual Alex Wright Memorial Dance Off. That snake dude from The Osirian Portal won. Super fun. All three of them were as nice as could possibly be and really funny goofballs.

NXT is the best. It's just so much fun to watch. Aiden English is great. He's actually engaged to Eddy Guerrero's daughter. I've talked with him on Facebook a few times and he's a huge FOT and comedy geek. Great dude. It's funny because he'll have posts from friggin' Vicki Guerrero on there.

I got a $25 coupon from WWE for subscribing to the Network since day 1 and the first and only thing I wanted was a VaudeVillains t-shirt. I feel like they reside on earth Chikara, but somehow wandered into the WWE Universe.

And speaking of Chikara, I am proud to say I saw this match live. On the whole it's amazing that they managed to put on the show that they did with such a low ceiling. Apparently they were slated to be in the larger building but got screwed at the last minute.

I had no idea that so many people in Chikara were into music until I read that John Darnielle article where they took him to a Chikara show. I mean, now it makes all the sense in the world, but still, I never thought that in a million years beforehand.

I'm glad Chikara/NXT has a largish following now. Aside from New Japan, nobody does performance and in-ring storytelling better than those guys. You could argue PWG, but I haven't seen enough to have a solid opinion.

Pwg was far and away the best thing going from 2009-2014. I have fallen several months behind recently, so I'm not 100% sure they're still as good as they have been, but for those 5 years you couldn't find anything better. Definitely give Pwg a chance. It's like a rated R Chikara.

I've seen a few random ACH, Kenny Omega, and Young Bucks matches from them, and I've loved them, but I really want to buy one of their DVDs in order to truly see what they have to offer.

I finally saw my first ROH TV show when I visited some family up in Oklahoma and other than the crowd, it was amazing. I've heard nothing but horror stories about the ROH crowds so I'll probably never see one of their shows live unless I'm prepared to fight a misogynist.

There actually is a new promotion that popped up here in Texas called Inspire Pro Wrestling that is co-run by Brandon Stroud from Uproxx and everything I've seen from it is amazing. I'm really hoping I can pop down to Austin for their next show which has their champion Dirty Andy Dalton vs. ACH as the main event. They also have one hell of a women's triple threat lined up with my love and life Deliah Doom in the center of it.

I haven't seen any ROH in years, but recently discovered that I can watch their TV show. I've only seen one and a half episodes, but it's good.

PWG is definitely worth checking out. I've heard rumors that ROH isn't letting their contracted guys wrestle there anymore which could be a big blow if it's true. Of course I've also heard that WWE plans a huge talent raid on ROH for when they start doing full fledged NXT tours so who knows how it'll all shake out.

This is one of my favorite nights of wrestling ever. This is when Evolution and The Shield were in their feud. The Shield were THE BEST. The WWE was so great when they just came out and destroyed everyone for two years. I think my favorite Shield subtext was how they made that goof Ryback their personal chewtoy for so much of their tenure.

In this feud, The Authority booked an 11-on-3 handicap match. This touched on the previous year when The Shield were their Blackwater-style hitmen and to cover their tracks HHH/Steph put them in a similar match that they nearly won. I think that was their first loss, actually. Anyways, this is now 11 heels on The Shield. The Shield spend the first part of night just beating the hell out of absolutely everyone they come across in the back to even the odds. Their destruction of Brad Maddox (the power figure of the night) was the best, highlighted by crazy ass Ambrose getting some last deserts. I also love Layla's face when she realizes her man Fandango is about to get his ass whipped. And Wade Barrett worming his way out of the conflict and setting ADR up to take a Superman punch was also an A+.

The Shield were the best. Except for The Wyatts, who were 4-1 against them, I believe.

Brad Maddox had great potential as a total weasel. Smug attitude and a hateable face.

They never should have let Ryback, Harper, or Rowan utter more than one syllable words.

Did they ever reveal who was the laptop RAW GM? What about Adam Rose's bunny?

Rey Misterio should come back and sell that weak kick thing like it was Ox Baker's heart punch.

Anyone here going to the joint Ring of Honor/New Japan shows in May? I'll be there! Sooooooo stoked to see Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada and my personal favorite SHINSUKE NAKAMURA live for the first time!!!!

Those ROH/New Japan shows are always top notch.

I was gonna try to address all of these replies but I'm too busy cackling over that stupid Austin Aries podcast that Fredricks posted. Whatta maroon.

In all seriousness, I hope NXT gets to a point where they are touring and recording episodes out on the road. NXT is, bar none, my favorite televised wrestling right now.

They taped one from Ohio a few weeks ago. I forget what matches were on it but I enjoyed the show. They're supposedly going to tour around a bunch more. Rumor is it they're going to have a show at the old ECW ARENA which is the best idea ever.

Nxt is going to be in Philly the day after the Ring of Honor/NJPW shows, so it looks like I'll be going to that show now too! Please tell me someone from here is going. It'd be awesome to meet up with somebody from here!

I'm an admin on another messageboard, www.loonybinforum.com/forum (http://www.loonybinforum.com/forum) and I have met up with a bunch of people from there and made a bunch of friends from all over the world going to shows. If anyone is interested in coming there and joining up, you're more than welcome. We don't just talk about wrestling there, everything goes. Plus, I could use some help turning those buncha munches into Best Show fans!

I'll try my best to go to the NXT show. It depends on scheduling and the like. I almost flew down to Orlando earlier this year to go to one of the live shows. Airfare was an excuse to not go. The real reason was that I'm a 37-year-old man with a career and a mortgage and a master's degree. Going to go see professional wrestling in person is hard enough to admit to people as is -- even if it's Chikara and I actually know a decent amount of people involved in the promotion. But flying down for the WWE's minor league is ridiculous.

(Of course, I openly talked on my brother's show about my lifelong hobby in e-fedding. I only recently got out of that world. But it's because I was in some drama and am mad at people, not because I don't love it still.)

I don't regret missing the Royal Rumble in Philly. I didn't go because tickets got sold out in minutes and scalping mark-up was absolutely bonkers. But I'm largely glad because the Rumble sucked and my tolerance for smark meta reactions to live wrestling is nil.

Dude I know came up with a great fake headline: Crying Daniel Bryan Fan Consoled At Ringside By Triple H. (If you remember Triple H consoling a kid.)

I've met a ton of FOTs in person through meet-ups and when people are in Philly for whatever reason or when I'm somewhere visiting. It's always a great time. One FOT I met actually came over to my parents' house for Thanksgiving two years ago. And one of the most fun days of my life was the day Jason From Huntsville and Fred From Honolulu were in the studio. I took the day off from work and met up with them (and Jason's wife) in North Jersey, drove down to Princeton, met up with Jon From Lawrenceville and broke their Wawa cherries before dropping them off in the studio.

So yes, I'm always down to meet whoever. It's sort of a hobby of mine and I love it.

http://theclassical.org/articles/its-all-fake-my-life-in-virtual-wrestling (http://theclassical.org/articles/its-all-fake-my-life-in-virtual-wrestling)

I wrote this article about e-fedding for The Classical. It's one of my favorite things I've ever written and explains why I stuck with a very shameful hobby I started at the age of 12. It goes beyond just the whole "the only thing I still do that I did when I was a kid" thing and having grown up (virtually) with a lot of these people. It's a collaborative process where you have to come up with stories for your characters. I wanted to be a screenwriter or a comedian or the like when I was younger. My career took me in a different route -- journalism. I also met my wife and am very pragmatic and never wanted to live in New York, so I decided to make comedy a hobby and not an avocation. (My brother, also a former e-fedder, went all-in with that goal when he was in high school. He's more of a risk-taker than I am.)

But this hobby lets me create characters and tell stories and the like. I've used some of these characters since I was in high school. They have fully formed backstories. I also think my characters can be really funny. (Troy Windham went from the slacker younger brother of a wrestling legend into becoming an entertainment industry star. He thinks he's a huge deal but he's relegated to being a celebrity judge on B-grade reality shows or playing recurring roles on USA dramas and/or Lifetime originals with Tiffany Amber Thiessen.) And I mostly perform as characters in my comedy so they're all really the same thing I've done my whole life.

But the world also gets very competitive and people's egos get in the way -- just like "real" wrestling. Some people want their characters to have titles, and that can get heated. Also, one person's story might interfere with another, and whoever is the booker of that league has to try and juggle all of that and it doesn't work out.  I got tied into some of that and got burnt out.

It gets all confusing and maddening but it's really fun if you're willing to engage in a silly hobby.

Man I did some e-fed stuff for 2 years and got caught up in the ego stuff and got so burned out I had to stop. It was a lot of fun though. I had a great story that I went to the boomer with about a guy who was abused as a child who had blocked off all the memories and was trying to go through his life as a good guy. Then he started having these dreams about the traumatic abuse he endured as a child and it haunted him, and slowly over time the dreams troubled him to the point that he lost it. He turned into a Charles Manson cult leader psychopath and led a group of guys that didn't feel like following the two year story I had written out and okayed with the booker and ruined it.

On one hand that sounds like a ton of fun, on the other hand for a lot of people I can see how they could be such big fans of wrestling that they would get a huge kick out of creating back stage drama in an e-fed, especially since they don't have a pay check to worry about like actual wrestlers do so they can just be complete dicks without worrying about it.

You have no idea how much this stuff goes on. It's the same sort of thing like the weird Dungeon Master in D&D campaigns who just acts like a total douche on some weird power trip. There's one guy in my e-fed circle who is particularly known for starting all sorts of chicanery and garbage. He's only partially literate but his characters are always "over" largely because he's such a pain-in-the-ass and knows how to constantly curry favor. I've stayed away from him for like 10 years.

I quit because I was just accused of "burying" another character in a league I was helping to write. But alas this was a well-plotted out reverse strike. I was not trying to bury any character but got accused of doing so. The other handler did a great job of becoming a martyr and gaining all sorts of sympathy. It was so dumb.

My brothers and I developed a fairly complicated role/roll-playing pro-wrestling game back in the 80s. I revived it with some pals back in the 90s, but alas I was the guy who drove alone 80 miles one-way to see z-grade matches in high school gyms in Detroit and so it soon died out. On a few very sad occasions I actually played against myself. That my friends is how Ace Skidmark became the World Champion.

The e-feds sound fun, but it sounds goddamn time consuming. Is there a version of e-feds for casual fans?

Hey folks. Long time, first time (that means 'long time reader, first time poster, you Sports Enterdummies).

I honestly registered solely so I could get the MP3 downloads but this is a cool place and this seems like as good a place as any to start, since JesseFromInsurance was the first time I heard about TBS and I kinda know that guy from prowres discussion first and foremost. Grew up on the stuff, grew out of it, came back mid-00s really into indies (IWA-MS and Wildside primarily), grew out of it again and now I just check for what seems cool and is free to watch. Seems like Kevin Steen getting to punk John Cena on live TV is pretty cool, so how do we feel about that?

I don't understand why he doesn't have the U.S. title yet, but a SummerSlam match with Cesaro might be a dream come true for me. People are complaining that he's already getting shoved down the card now that Cena has his wins back, but he's still tearing it up with Finn Balor and his next feud looks awesome so I'm happy.

They did an episode of Talk is Jericho (which got a mention on the Best Show this week oddly enough) that was really enjoyable and in a similar vein to their Dinner For 3. All those Dinner for 3 shows have been good. This week's with Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler and Ryback actually got me liking Ryback. He is a guy who knows his weaknesses and isn't afraid to laugh at himself which is a good trait to have.

I got really burned out of wrestling and have hardly watched anything this year. I didn't watch anything at all for like 5 months. I've started back watching nxt and have been really enjoying it, but I need to not overdo it like I did. I've been to probably over 200 shows now and spent ridiculous amounts of time and money getting to all of the shows, and over the last couple years I kept track of all the matches I watched and it was over 1300 in both 2013 and 2014. I really had to cut back.

What are some matches you guys would recommend someone watching who has really only seen nxt this year?
