Title: Bad, bad entertainers
Post by: Fido on May 15, 2008, 09:24:39 PM
Over the months and years, I've listened to Tom and various listeners attack the integrity or worthiness of various movies, entertainers and musicians whom I find to be perfectly adequate but may or may not really admire.  I've thought that about Juno, the Rolling Stones, Robert Rodriguez, Airplane!, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, and many, many more. (In fairness, Tom may not have been bashing the Stones but only saying that they've seen their day and should hang it up, or something to that effect.)  A lot of the preceding is pretty middlebrow fare, some of which I like, some of which I don't.

No doubt, the trash talk makes the show more interesting. But I think to myself, oh Tom, it could be oh, so much worse. Why not leave well enough alone? What do I mean? The following link lists the acts appearing in the concert series at this year's Iowa State Fair, the granddaddy of all state fairs. It's an absolute horrorshow, one act worse than the one before, full of washed up has-beens and never-weres.  I'm sorry to say, as a native Iowan, that it probably makes the West Virginia State Fair's concert series look like that of Carnegie Hall. Don't click this link if you are prone to nausea.  Even the word "demolition," as in demolition derby, is misspelled.  And this from a state that boasts, with some justification, that its public education system is among the best in the nation.

The clincher is Garrison Keillor at the end there.

Horrifying. At least Iowa has a tractor pull in addition to the demolitian.

Yes!  Garrison Keillor and tractor pull!

The worst is Charlie Daniels. If you have only heard "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", you have not heard this jerk really shine.  He is the scariest redneck, right-wing, homophobic, racist SOB to ever hit it big in music.

You didn't like his last book, Ain't No Rag?

I think he's a jerk based purely on "The Devil Went Down To Georgia". No matter what you think of the merits of the Devil's fiddle solo vs. Johnny's fiddle solo - and I happen to think the Devil smoked him, and that Johnny bnringing in back-up singers was cheating just as much as the Devil flying in his demon band - the Devil is pretty cool about the whole thing.

He thinks Johnny beat him and honors the deal, bowing his head and giving him the fiddle of gold as promised even though he could easily backstab him with his Devil powers. And what does Johnny do? Does he win graciously? No, he calls the guy a son of a bitch! This is the guy Charlie Daniels wants us to root for, a bigger asshole than the Devil?

Finally someone has the courage to point this out.  Thank you, Wes.  For once, the Devil gets his due.

Why are State Fair tickets always so dang expensive for crappy acts, most who haven't put out an album that more than 5000 people have bought in years? If your state's grandstands are anything like MN it's not even a great atmosphere to see a show.

But then we have Taste of MN which is totally free (other than food, but no purchase is required) and often has pretty good bands or at least the member that everybody knows playing with a backing band. But, it doesn't cost 25 bucks to see Cinderella or Rick Springfield. In fact, Rick Springfield played Taste the other year. I've seen Alex Chilton, Ringo Starr, Herman's Hermits and a bunch of great local bands all for the price of $0 and maybe some cheese curds.

They're not too outraged by the naked pictures of Vanessa Hudgens, apparently, to book her.

'The Big E' (short for Eastern States Exposition... sort of like a huge state fair for all of New England) lineup is all kinds of horrible including Esteban, Tiffany and Hate Pit resident Mickey Dolenz.  I kind of like state fairs for the close-up look at agriculture and 4-H club aspect to it, but the entertainment, midway carnies, demo derbies and the mutants that crawl out of the hills to attend are just too much to endure.
