Sadly, no.

I've always thought it would be funny if we lived in a world where a batter would go out to bat and the entire 15-hour Ring Cycle played-- but that no one really saw this as out of place.
I haven't really *always* thought that. First off, I haven't *always* been alive. It is a thought that I had a few years ago, though.
And Omar, did a baseball player really run onto the field to a Mercyful Fate song?

I wonder if "what would your music be as a hitter or as a closer in baseball?" would be one of those sports topics Tom could do without the non-sports fans rebelling.
The new Music Tapes album - Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes (http://www.mergerecords.com/store/store_detail.php?catalog_id=543). It is fantastic.

Back in 1983, I saw Richard (oh you probably know him as "Goose" Gossage) trot out to the mound to the strains of Liquid Liquid's "Optimo." I did a little dance in my seat, and then my mom got mad because I spilled sodey on my pants. I was surprised ESPN did not include a clip of this in their Yankee Stadium montage during Monday night's HR Derby.

I'm sure I read on Shovel.com that he's planning another album. Plus (from what I have read online) he still plays shows relatively frequently. Just not as Neutral Milk Hotel.

You got this exactly right, MOP. I used to assist on shifts on the local college radio station, and I specifically remember that every person that worked there practically worshipped U2 until Sunday Bloody Sunday started playing on MTV, and overnight they became pariahs. We had an advance copy of The Cars debut, it was a big office favorite.....until it got released and they immediately started playing "My Best Friend's Girl" on the local commercial rock station. REM, same story. In my opinion, it's one type of bad thing to like something because all of the tattooed and pierced people do, but it's at least as bad to dislike something because you saw some some hard hat grooving to it. Look to yourself to form your opinions, not to your environment. What are you, 14?
"Moongirl," by Stellastarr, which got to me when I typed "Crystal Stilts" into Last.fm. Not too shabby!

WOAH. I don't want to get too hopeful for this... but... I can't help it... that would be amazing!
Laurie and Omar aren't the only ones who like twee crap, I like a lot of it too. Case in point: "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" by Camera Obscura. I think they're a pretty mediocre band, but this song is stunning:

I'm a sucker for handclaps and references to Lloyd Cole, sorry.

One of my very best friends has a sister, who is also a friend, who has a daughter, who is a passing acquaintance who falls squarely under the heading "seems like a good kid." She's a singer in the praise band for a mega-church somewhere in Florida. She sings on 3 of the 16 songs, and her voice is a beautiful crystalline thing, like bells ringing, with very little affectation in her voice, and the production is phenomenally good for a local band, but almost everything else about the disc is is bad bad bad. I am trying to formulate a strategy to break it to her the next time I see her, which traditionally is at Christmastime. HOOO boy. In one of the songs, a nearly note for note Coldplay rip, the band sings the phrase "Your will is my will" 64 times, at which point the lamest possible rap breaks out.
Someone help me, please.

If it's produced really well, just compliment her/them on that. "it really SOUNDS good!".
you also don't have to say anything about it. were you specifically requested to do a critique? if that's the case, then make a list of strong point and weak points, with suggestion as to how maybe they could improve in those areas.
if they are a young band, they'll mature and get better as they continue working at it. Take a listen to the early Vessel recordings: yeah, you thought back in '78 that a 17-minute vocoder solo was genius, but time has proved otherwise.

I had to get a cab this morning and when I got in, the cab driver had the radio up really loud and "La Isla Bonita" was on. He quickly turned it down and tried to be cool and play it off like it just happened to be on and the radio just happened to be really loud at that moment, but no way, no day, pal. You were way into the Spanish Lullaby this morning, and I caught you.

I was having dinner at a steakhouse with my parents tonight (don't judge/not braggin). On the stereo as I was leaving: La Isla Bonita. Haven't heard it in at least ten years, and now two references in one day (Wes' post and on this week's Never Not Funny)? Coincidence? I think not, sir.
I was just listening to the first ever dfk call, from the same show as the spike exchange re: carol o'connor, where he discussed getting beat up by don ho. Funny stuff!

What kind are they? I've always wanted some sort of wireless headphones, though my mental image of little in-ear earbuds minus all cords probably won't be around for a while.
As a joke, for my 50th, my family stuck a nice 50 dollar gift certificate inside a copy of "50 Irish Pub Favorites". It's horrible, as if it was arranged by Lawrence Welk. So every time any one of them walks into the room, that's suddenly what we're listening to. That'll teach them.
"Long Haired Lady," by Paul & Linda McCartney, which reminds me of The Best Show where the "love is long" chorus skipped for what seemed like forever. Which in turn reminds me of the night I spent in a seedy Econo-Lodge by the PDX airport, in a room where I am sure at least one person had been murdered, listening to The Best Show on my Zune in a (largely successful) attempt to ward off mortal terror.
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. After years of not really getting all the hoopla surrounding this album, all of a sudden it clicked into place for me and now I'm borderline obsessed with it.
My Bloody Valentine is the Joy Division of GenerationXY.
(I didn't care for it at first either. The real reasoning for this was: I was wrong.)
Okay, so for some reason I'm listening to "Never Did No Wanderin'" from the Mighty Wind soundtrack.

Beck has been involved in Scientology for most of his life; his wife is also a second-generation Scientologist. Marissa and her twin brother, Giovanni, were delivered by Beck's mother, Bibbe.[62] Beck publicly acknowledged his affiliation with the controversial Church of Scientology for the first time in an interview published in the New York Times Magazine on March 6, 2005. Further confirmation came in an interview with the Irish Sunday Tribune's i Magazine on June 11, 2005, where he was quoted as saying, "Yeah, I'm a Scientologist. My father has been a Scientologist for about 35 years, so I grew up in and around it."
I know the history, but I'm basing my official "embracing" point on the release of Sea Change, where, although he had always been around scientology, he finally dumped his non-scientologist girlfriend via scientologist intervention, made a crappy, over-produced soft-rock album, and jumped the shark whilst inadvertently(?) sending album-cover-designer Jeremy Blake into a paranoid downward spiral that resulted in a crazy-ass double-suicide, then went on tour with the Flaming Lips and got totally upstaged by them.

The Theresa Duncan/Jeremy Blake double suicide thing is why I just can't listen to Beck anymore. Inadvertent or not, when I'm hearing 'Beercan', I'm envisioning somebody discovering Jeremy Blake's remains.

I don't know if you intended this post to be funny, but now I'm thinking of a dead body washing up on the shore and those weird voices at the end of "Beercan": "Awwww Yeah. My goodness!" Am I sick for thinking that's funny?
I saw that cutlery/glassware percussion thing live and it was pretty impressive. I also liked that it was a funny bit of stagecraft, with the backing band "taking a dinner break" on stage.
I'm fairly ambivalent about Beck. It's hard to get excited about him anymore, but that might just be because of the high degree of output. I liked that album "Guero" a lot, but wasn't crazy about "Sea Change" or "The Information."
I like Guero and the first half of Midnite Vultures. The rest can go jump in a lake.

My neighbor has been playing that Kid Rock song a lot lately. It's pretty horrifying. Kid Rock's talent really has gone down hill since Bawitdiba. He showed such promise.
That's the first time I've heard that Kid Rock song; it sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd fronted by Michael McDonald. Poor, but listenable.
You guys already have the new iPod?
the genius thing is somehow connected to the iTunes store, which feels very big-brothery. I don't know if it has an algorithm that actually analyzes the content of the song, or just compiles a list based on what other customers purchased. It also wouldn't let me make a genius playlist for songs that weren't in the iTunes store.
I was surprised when Genius did a really really good transition (quiet song, quiet then loud song, loud song), but it may have just been a coincidence.
Genius seems to mostly pick out popular/well-liked songs, which is a good way for me to re-listen to stuff I may have overlooked that I already have.
But yeah, it's no Pandora. Which sadly may not be long for this earth. It would sure be nice if Apple or Amazon or someone floated some cash to Pandora, Muxtape, and the other cool-but-can't-afford royalties services which must in some way increase sales. Ah well.
I am asking again.....do you guys already have the new iPod? How are you hearing genius?
Is that a real song? I never knew what that was until an English friend explained it to me w/r/t the fat guy in the British Office. That shit has disco fries totally beat in the disgusting olympics.

Rollins Band! Low Self Opinion! But I blame Pandora for this, they took me there through picking the Melvins as a start off point. They played this particular Rollins Band track because "it features punk roots, great lyrics, mild rhythmic syncopation, repetitive melodic phrasing, and extensive vamping."

As Martin alluded to, Tribe Called Quest did.
Now I, too, have listened/watched that video a handful of times. If you check "related videos" on the YouTube page, someone upped the Larry Levan edit, which is all kinds of awesome.

Possibly the most heart-wrenching Christmas song ever written. Next to "The Cat Carol" (http://www.catcarol.com/) of course.

The show is so strange in the early days. Two hours, no GOMPs, no Spike, Petey, Julie, Fredricks, etc. and LOADS of Wurster and Benjamin calls? What a backwards world it was!

Doug Benson's I Love Movies podcast from Jan 26th. It's a funny one.
the new hunches record. i am a little frightened and or disturbed by how accurately it sums up my attitude re: life right now.
Every XTC song I have in a mega-playlist. Surprisingly few duds. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I've always considered their post-Terry Chambers output to be a mixed bag. It's all sounding pretty good now, though - might be time for a reevaluation.

Upgrade everything but Oranges & Lemons. That gets my vote for the biggest disparity between what an album's cover promised me the album would sound like and what the album actually sounded like. I still like a few songs on it, especially The Loving, but I really hate how the whole thing is produced.

It's my favorite. Skeleton Steps Out, Chalkhills and Children? These are incredible. Also, one of the greatest bass guitar albums of all time. The first six or seven songs are amazing examples of McCartney-style bass melodicism (is that a word?)

I just listened to the Beach Boys' 'Friends' for the first time. First impressions
1 - Is that it?
2 - Were any of the songs actually finished? I'm sure one of them fades out part way through a verse. I have bootlegs of Smile that sound more complete.

I can understand why you didn't like "Friends." I personally like it, but I think "Smiley Smile," "Wild Honey," and "20/20" are all better.

i just joined emusic even though i'm bleeding money right now. got the latest thee oh sees and just finished it. very good. think i'm gonna get the new jeffrey lewis thing, too.A little over a year ago, Jeffry Lewis and his band crashed at my house after they opened for the Mountain Goats in Eugene. I had never met them before nor did I know much about them but I talked to them for a bit at the merch table before the show and again afterward. They said they were looking for a place to crash and they asked if we had floor space. I told them we do but that we lived an hour south of Eugene. They said they were heading south anyway so they came down and stayed. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his music (which I like) I just wanted to say that they were all so incredibly nice. Just top notch.

It's actually my first time listening to it and I've listened to it two times through already. It's pleasant, jazz-tinged pop. Musically and lyrically sophisticated. The lead singer sounds a bit like Glenn Tillbrook of Squeeze.
Next up: The Fall-Perverted by Language
I'm listening to Prefab Sprout now too (since I love Squeeze).

This is worse than The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape. Big Black is overrated.
As I see it, the problem with Big Black is twofold. First, everything from the music to the lyrics sounds contrived. Secondly, if it's abrasiveness and unpleasant aesthetics they're going for, they fail miserably on both counts. I've heard old free jazz records from the 1960's that are far more abrasive and unpleasant sounding than anything Big Black ever recorded. Some people say they like Big Black because they offer a unique insight into the ethos of Middle America. For me, it seems like Steve Albini is just trying to piss people off. I'm just not impressed by them.
Aside from a handful of good songs, they mostly suck.
Oh and now playing:

Bricolage by Amon Tobin. Highly recommended.
Hey Fredericks, are you still listening to that 89 cent Booker T. and The MG's record? I wish I could find a bargain like that.
If I'm not mistaken, Bricolage was awarded a rare 10.0 by Pitchfork. Doesn't necessarily make it better than any other album. Just an interesting fact.
I've found some good LP's at Half Price Books and like A basement.
Frederick owns an Amon Tobin album. Mind officially blown.
I saw Eugene Chadbourne (and his non-musical daughter) open for They Might Be Giants at the Ritz in the late 90s. Ew buoy.
The TiMBuG show was the second most excited I've ever seen a crowd of nerds - Morrissey at the same place is the clear #1.

That analogy doesn't make any sense, does it?
I work for a company that builds those annoying automated agents that you deal with when you call a company (you know, the ones where you scream "AGENT" to talk to a person). My job is to make them easier to use. I direct the voice talents, write the prompts, etc.
Right now, I am listening to recordings of people calling into one of our applications. There is definitely some colorful turlet talk.
One of the more infamous call recordings: Our automated agent helps this guy get his cable TV working again. "She" asks at the end of the call, "Now did that solve the problem?" The guy responded by saying: "Hmm! Thanks robot bitch!"

Agreeing with Scratchbomb, I too would love this. If there are any FCC-friendly tracks, it would make for a good found audio radio play hour, along with some of Paul Stanley's stage banter and some other odds and ends I've been collecting.
The album is Bitte Orca by the band Dirty Projectors. Dave Longstreth is the band's lead singer and the two girls on the cover are two members of the band. They "reinterpreted" Damaged by Black Flag a few years ago.

I myself am indifferent to KISS. I certainly don't hate them. However, there are some music fans that actually do hate KISS. I know of a lot of music critics that actively dislike KISS. I think that's who Paul Stanley was talking about.

Sorry buffcoat, that second volume of Paul Stanley stage banter sucked. He isn't as funny and, moreover, all he does is rant about sex and "KISS-haters."

This was my first and still my of favorite Sanders' record. Sonny Sharrock was/is my favorite jazz guitar player.
Check out Sharrock's "Ask The Ages" to hear the two of them reunited years later. First time I ever did a radio show I played stuff off both those records.
Good taste TRG. And it tastes good too.

There ought to be a copy of Ask The Ages in every home. Sonny Sharrock was a genius. It's a shame his life was cut short.
If you like Sonny Sharrock also check out some of these albums he appeared on:
"Eternal Rhythm" by Don Cherry
"Tauhid" by Pharoah Sanders
"Super Nova" by Wayne Shorter
"A Tribute to Jack Johnson" by Miles Davis (specifically the second track "Yesternow" where he's absolutely killer)
"Black Woman" by Sonny and Linda Sharrock
"Guitar" by Sonny Sharrock
They're all great albums.
Also, his work with Last Exit is good (depending on your tolerance for free jazz).

Have you ever been on the ilx message board? Momus used to post there all the time. I don't know whether he still does or not.
I don't think he does anymore. But we're not short of Momus' writings. His blog and articles are generally very good.
Message boards like ilx intimidate the heck out of me, but I do periodically scan it for people's "Best Albums" lists. Maybe I should give it another go.
By the way, Momus is really uneven as a musician--he has a lot of duds mixed in with his occasional pop gems--but this album and Ocky Milk are really good.
What are the good momus albums to check out? I've got star forever and really like it.

Just snagged the LP today.
You have exemplary taste, Grote. Have you heard any of the material he recorded with the Second Quintet?
I wondered way back in the 80s: how much older is that one guy in Slade than the others? It's like if Limp Bizkit had hired Lemmy.

I believe when that picture was taken, they were 32, 32, 32, and 29. Not sure which one you think was lots older than the others.
Not a flea market find, but a recent download. I just learned that she's the daughter of Don Cherry, is (or at least was) married to a member of The Pop Group, and was a backup singer and stage dancer for The Slits. I remember in 1989, after 2-3 years of being a hardcore kid, I decided to just give in and bought the cassingle for "Buffalo Stance." Little did I know that I was remaining a music snob!
It does have that late 80s-early 90s hip-hop overproduction thing going, but it's still pretty great.
Dave, I know you're sensitive to guys looking old

Wow. Really? That's where you want to take this? I have a team of writers working on a response.
That Giorgio Moroder album keeps popping up everywhere lately.

Those guys opened for Dinosaur Jr., when I saw them, earlier this year.
I thought they had a powerful psychedelic, southern gothic feel.
Just a little creepy. I like that.
I haven't heard the CD yet; do my observations hold when applied to the recording?
Thank you.

Even though I seem to be meeting more and more people who are into Galaxie 500, they still feel way under appreciated to me.
Grote, that's the an interesting class idea, but I think you're going to ruin This American Life for some of your pupils. For shame.
I had a Galaxie 500 DVD, and those guys are about the alternative-est looking guys ever.
I've always liked the lyrics to Strange:
I went alone down to the drugstore
I went in back and took a Coke
I stood in line and ate my Twinkies
I stood in line, I had to wait

Dave, I'm young and I don't get it. I understand what the band is attempting to do, it just bores the hell out of me. But hey, Kevin Shields is supposed to be a genius. Who am I to question him?

I didn't like the album when I first heard it and would revisit it from time to time to make sure I hadn't missed something but would always walk away scratching my head. Then, for some reason, I played it again last summer and finally "got" it. Now I can't stop listening to it.
Swervedriver satisfied my need for that stuff.
Unless that record's got something special hidden underneath, oh masterofsparks.
What's it taste like when you get to the center?

Although both were considered shoegazer, I don't see much in common between Swervedriver and My Bloody Valentine. Swervedriver were a real rock band, definitely the most rock of that genre (especially if you're listening to Mezcal Head). MBV (or at least Loveless) is pretty much ambient music. Most of its thrills are textural.

Sleater-Kinney. Up till now I've only listened to Dig Me Out, which I played on repeat at least a dozen times before moving on to something else. Right now I'm making my way through my 3rd listen of The Woods. It's great!

I wanted to share this somewhere, but my iTunes was on shuffle and played "The Draft" by Bum Kon (off of their reissued Drunken Sex Sucks) followed by "My Kind of Soldier" by Guided by Voices.

That LP is oddly adored by Julian Cope. I am a massive Kiss fan but cannot break into that record. Comically, the used copy I own has a radio station's scribble on it that states "Good, but weird."
That new old Jay Reatard song "Wounded". I got the demo on his blog a long time ago and played it all the time, so it's nice to see that it's gonna be on his new LP. And the final version of it is pretty fantastic.

I can't get enough of these guys right now. The lazy comparison (which I've been guilty of is the Black Lips) but they're actually MUCH more like the Deadly Snakes in a way. The singer's voice is like a perfect combination of Andre Ethier AND Age of Danger. TOP NOTCH!

Totally obsessed with Brightblack Morning Light at the moment. Everything sounds exactly the same but I'm not minding.Word. I haven't heard their first one, but the one from last year, "Motion to Rejoin" is awesome. Definitely has a dulled-senses vibe to it.
i don't expect to garner much respect, but I got a random hankering for "Thunderstorms & Neon Signs" by Wayne Hancock. So that is what I'm listening to.

I saw him on that tour (opening for Ronnie Dawson). I had no idea who he was and his set blew me away.

Yea, Ronnie Dawson was great as well. I think Wayne Hancock poached Ronnie's guitar player after that. At any rate, I didn't make it through the whole album (too much clarinet for crying out loud) so now I'm on to the the Hi-Fives.

Yes! Great album. In fact, that run of albums he had from 1970-72 (Curtis, Roots, Curtis/Live!, and Superfly) is one the greatest runs in music history.
Holy crud. I just found an awesome deal on emusic. They have a new thing where certain albums only cost 12 credits. Well there's this thing called The Roots of The Cramps. It's all songs the cramps covered or were influenced by and it's 56 tracks for 12 credits. And you get great stuff like The Sparkles "Hipsville 29BC" which is one of the greatest garage recordings ever for my money.

Heh. I just checked the Miles Davis offerings and Pangaea, an album with only 2 tracks, is 24 download credits.
In perusing the website it appears that anything over ten minutes in length is "album only." iTunes has a similar policy.

That's real awesome from 0:00, but it is a fun visual effect in the second song. I remember seeing this when it first aired. I wonder who the band members were? Was that Earl Slick? And that bass player, despite the occasional disco-y lick that was popular in the day, is fantastic.

it's an odd period in bowie history, 1979, after lodger but before scary monsters. he wasn't touring in this period (from 1979-1983) so this band was hired for this appearance or a set of appearances or something. thus it might not even be his regular players like earl slick.
i do know that his backup singers are joey arias and cult icon klaus nomi though

Isn't that Carlos Alomar on guitar, and there's no reason why it couldn't be George Murray on bass? I dunno, it sounds like the band that played on Station to Station to me, slightly different arrangement.

I wasn't that big a fan of SUMMER SUN when it came out; it seemed like AND THEN NOTHING TURNED ITSELF INSIDE OUT, Pt. 2, but without the catharsis of a "Cherry Chapstick" to liven things up. I like the record now - it's great nightime/wintertime listening. It still wouldn't make my top 5 YLT albums, though.
I think ELECTR-O-PURA is the best.

Ryan's is a very frightening place to eat. I associate it with a general relinquishing of any hope for the future.
My friends and I used to have eating competitions at Ryan's in my late teens and early 20s. We would eat enough so that we would have to go back to the house and just lie there for an hour. It was awful. And so American. I say that with pride.

creekmore_banks, are you in memphis?
Yes. Yes, I am. As a matter of fact, my name here is stolen from one of the Earles/Jensen characters.
Technically, I am separated most of the day by the Mississippi River about 10 minutes away in WM, but all of my time away from the apartment/work is spent in Memphis. I'm a self-identified Memphis resident. God bless Memphis--publicly humiliated on a weekly basis, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
I think Eric O put it best in an interview from several years ago when someone asked him what Memphis was like:
"Memphis is Memphis. It's fucked up and great, and fucked up and terrible. It's dirty water and soul. High crime and great gangsta rap. Fried chicken and the best barbecue ribs & sandwiches (pork, not beef) in the world. Sometimes I gotta get out, sometimes I can't believe I'm lucky to be here. The river, the music, the food. The heat."
Indeed.
I didn't realize there was a fellow FOT in Memphis---I think I remember hearing that Tom came to Gonerfest a few years ago. I heard him plug the fundraiser for Zac's daughter a few months ago. The fellow from Knoxville calls in pretty regularly, but I don't remember any Memphis calls lately.
As for the Antenna reunion, it was pretty much as much fun as you imagined. Sorry.
30-something days until Gonerfest. Huzzah!

Geez, I forgot Clear Spot. That is a good album.
Regarding TMR, I think its status as a classic may have something to do with the number of critics and musicians that have championed it over the years. I think Lester Bangs said that it was the greatest album ever made. But I don't believe it's any great piece of art. It sounds pretentious and mostly unlistenable to me.
Although, the same could be said for LMDOB. I like it though.

Pretty sure, it's a known fact that it was the Mothers on The Blimp. It's a Frank Zappa backing track.Geez, I forgot Clear Spot. That is a good album.

My favorite Trout tune wold have to be Dachau Blues.

There is some debate regarding the the Mothers rather than the Magic Band backing the Cap't on THe Blimp.

I mean, I'm a blur fanatic. I love pretty much all their albums in different ways. Obviously it's a bit different due to Coxon being axed but...like all their albums, it's got it's ups and downs. But I still will take blur over any other Britpop any day of the week.

Steve, you should check out Ethiopiques Vol. 7. It contains the entirety of Ere Mela Mela by Mahmoud Ahmed, one of the greatest albums ever recorded by anyone, IMO.
There's a 2 cd Ethiopiques best-of as well.

Jebus, these Ethiopiques you all are talking about ... what's this all about? I've never heard of them but you guys are all talking them up ... I've got to go listen to some of their stuff.
Ethiopiques is a series of compact discs featuring Ethiopian and Eritrean singers and musicians. Many of the Ethiopiques CDs compile various singles and albums that Amha Records, Kaifa Records, and Philips-Ethiopia released during the 1960s and 1970s in Ethiopia. Prominent singers and musicians from this era appearing on Ethiopiques releases include Alemayehu Eshete, Asnaketch Worku, Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke, and Tilahun Gessesse. However, some Ethiopiques releases are new recordings.Really some quality stuff.
The Paris-based world music record label Buda Musique began the Ethiopiques series in 1997 and initially compiled Ethiopian popular music releases from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the subsequent CDs focus on traditional music, while others highlight individual musicians or specific styles. As of September 2007, there have been 23 releases. None of the CDs feature modern-day synthesizer-based Ethiopian pop music. Francis Falceto is the producer of the series.
Some songs from Ethiopiques Volume 4 were featured in the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers.
There's a 2 cd Ethiopiques best-of as well.

Oh, hey friend-- I like Tool also, because they are so ridiculous and navel gaze-y and prog metal and everything with the goofy time signatures. I saw them a few years ago, and it was the loudest goddamn show i ever was at ... it took 3 full days for the ringing to stop.
Saw them in an in-store appearance about three weeks ago, and me and AFK had to have it. It's real twangy, so you Cynics fans probably won't care for it. Gillian was surprisingly tall, and could just about fit in a mailing tube.

A weirdly great album.

She knows all their names, and talks to them like their in the room. I got her the "Albums" box set and the "ABBA Scrapbook" which she's looked at so many times, I've had to tape sections of pages back in to the the book.
Japanese pressing! Which makes no difference as far as I can tell.

Astoundingly beautiful
Writing with movie scores as, uh, soundtrack. Dracula by Wojchiech Kilar was too intense, but this Code 46 score by The Free Association is excellent lo-fi soundscape background.

Just reliving how great this is and realizing that if a band today released this as their debut they'd be dropped before they could make a second album.

I am currently obsessing over this Jay Reatard version of "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle." I never paid much attention to Nirvana's original, but this is a masterpiece. I certainly don't remember it being such a great song.

If you love those Cheap Trick records, bet you would love Alice Cooper's Killer and/or Love It To Death. Very different, yet somehow compatible.
Soft Machine's first album, the only one people really like by them, I think. Tom has played stuff off of it.

oh yea and on this subject I dont know if its been discussed on this forum or not? but in terms of improvised music drummers Fredricks' call out and enthusiasm for Hans Bennink was great, coming from the view point another who is enthusiast for Bennink, does Fredricks post here?
dfk, have you ever heard Kornet - from Sweden? Fusion heaven, or what? I went to a get-together over the weekend and a friend threw them into the mix. I was sure it would cause people to leave

What a magnificent fucking album! I listen to it maybe every other month and every single time it feels as exciting as listening to it for the first time.
I love that album too, BUT (and I'm going to sound like a record snob now) the only version of it I listen to is the original, never-officially-released white label entitled GIMIX - which is essentially Since I Left You before they cleared the samples (and had to cut lots and lots of samples from the record). It's amazing, one of the best party albums ever. I almost can't listen to the official release now without hearing what's missing.
Listened to some of the new Joanna Newsom album and... liked it? She sounds more in control of her voice now; more Joni Mitchell-ish. I wonder how the forest creature community is taking it.
So, who else on here is using lala? I just found it a week or so ago, and I think it's pretty great-- if anyone is interested in starting/joining a cool kids club on there, lemme know.I do sometimes, it's a pretty good service, although I wish they'd let you stream a song more than once.

I didn't know about the five bucks thing. I'll have to look in to that. Thanks. So, who else on here is using lala? I was a little bummed about that too at first, but honestly, you can pay five bucks and get the ability to stream at least fifty songs an unlimited number of times from any computer with a halfway decent internet connection... it's a pretty good deal.

Found at the Princeton Record Exchange, and also a cutout. On heavy, heavy rotation. It took a lot of record-buying, but I've come to realize that we could cut our entire collection down to this and an obscure late 50s Miles Davis record my wife plays over and over.
Forever Changes is one of the best albums EVAH. Haven't been able to find any of the original albums on LP for a price I can afford, but the greatest hits has all the greatest hits on it.
The Scharpling and Wurster Merge Records thing.
Best line: "It's a black fella telling like filth jokes or something."

Toto, "Africa."
Don't judge! It's the iTunes' fault.
Yo La Tengo playing Blue Line Swinger live on WFMU!!! One of my favorites of their songs.
edit: What an amazing show! Some other highlights: Secret Blood (Dump), Roadrunner (Modern Lovers), Sex Drive (Embarrassment), White Light/White Heat (Velvets), Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash), Sex Bomb "extended jam" (Flipper).

One of my very favorite albums from the 90s, it's like a perfect blending of arena rock and psychedelia. You get muscular, guitar-led rock songs with "Oh yeah"s and "Baby"s aplenty but lyrics about comic books, spaceships, and psychedelic drugs and song titles like "Negasonic Teenage Warhead," "Ego, The Living Planet," and "Look To Your Orb For the Warning."

Clutch is a lot more metal than those guys. That wasn't bad but even though it seems like an unpopular choice amongst FOTs, I love Clutch (not the most recent album as much).
I suppose fans of one would be fans of the other, but to my ears Monster Magnet are much more psychedelic (as in the Nuggets boxes, Back from the Grave/Pebbles/Boulders/High in the Mid-Sixties/Scum of the Earth comps) and write better songs. And Dave Wyndorf's a better singer than Neil Fallon.
Here's a good starter track:

Lloyd Miller received a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Utah. His thesis was entitled "Music and Song in Persia". While writing his thesis, he spent 7 years in Tehran as an arts writer for several publications and a PR person for the Center for Preservation and Propagation of Iranian Music.
He is native in English and fluent in Persian, Dari and French, and during the 1950s and 60s, Miller played with top jazz artists in Europe like Don Ellis and Eddie Harris. Miller was interested in eastern culture and music. He moved to Iran and mastered Persian music as well as Iranian folk music genres under the supervision of masters Dr. Daryush Safvat and Mahmoud Karimi.
Dr. Miller is also known as Kurosh Ali Khan, a name he used while hosting a prime-time television show in Tehran, Iran in the 1970s. The program was known as Kurosh Ali Khan va Dustan, or Kurosh Ali Khan and Friends, a variety show with music.

LCD Soundsystem's cover of "Jump Into the Fire." It's a surprisingly good fit, especially considering the disparity in vocal ability between Nilsson and the LCD Soundsystem dude.
Disregard "Flagpole Sitta" (which is a decent and catchy rock song but overplayed) and this album is really fantastic, in my humble opinion. I suggest you check out the tracks "Carlotta Valdez" or "Jack the Lion".
Also, their album after this one, King James Version, is even better.

Couldn't agree more. I was just telling my wife yesterday that this is slowly becoming my favorite album EVER. A great mix of "mellifluous" Beefheart (e.g. Too Much Time) and "chew-on-this-for-a-while" Beefheart (e.g. Big Eyed Beans from Venus), but never seeming disjointed. The production, the lyrics, the music, and Don's voice are all top-notch.
I would like "Cowboy Song" a lot more if it weren't about cowboy stuff.

Of course I can see why NPR wouldn't contact Tom, the Best Show's humor is clearly not what they are going for. However, I think what Benjamin Walker can produce, largely by himself, beats NPR at it's own game. I don't think it's the intellectualism of NPR that is its flaw but it's self-satisfied smarm. TMI's edginess, as I see it, is not something I would imagine NPR would embrace. Although it has been compared to This American Life.
I think Clay Pigeon could find a home at NPR. His voice is like the Bizarro World version of the typical NPR voice.

Oh my God. Oh, oh. How much do I hate Clay Pigeon's voice? Oh, SO much. Maybe because I grew up in the Midwest and his voice is like somebody took everything I loathed about where I grew up and fed it through a FEEL THE HORROR modulator, but I will NEVER. EVER. listen voluntarily to that. Maybe that's why I don't hate NPR? Except for Car Talk and Garrison Keillor, I do hate them.
Etc. etc. I hate this, I hate that, blah blah.
Well, he does that dumb/supposed-to-be-creepy-I-guess voice usually, but what about his regular voice that he uses to talk to other DJs and people on the street?

Scott Walker seems to receive most of his acclaim from outside the United States. People I know who love him don't speak English as their first language and if you look at critical acclaim, most of it hails from European countries especially Germany. Yes, I have done a lot of research on the appeal of Scott Walker because I don't understand it!

Not making any assumptions, but I just want to point out that his name is Scott Walker, too, and he's also had a recent resurgence, if not in popularity, then at least in notoriety.
The new PJ Harvey album over and over again.
That really is a stunner, that one.
Just getting to it. Falling in love.

I was joking! I don't know if the musician is really having a resurgence in popularity.
I currently happen to be listening to an astrology podcast called Saturn Scene from about a month ago solely because the guest is PFT.
Marc Maron interviewing Paul Krassner.
I like it.
check it out. Will do, Steve O'Bloom.
Disco Outlaw sounds alot like Reigning Sounds/Parting Gifts stuff. Jack O is Jack Oblivian formerly from The Oblivians. It's very soulful, twangy and Memphis-y. Here is a song and article: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/4951 (http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/4951)
The Belle and Sebastian album is very catchy and poppy. There are a few slower songs that are just as good but for instance the title track will crawl into your memory and never come out.
I think I like Sun Kil Moon just a little bit better.
Clips of Greg Cartwright solo and acoustic at Gonerfest 4. I love everything he does, but this is particularly fantastic.

Yeah me too. Kozelek's a favorite. I have all of his stuff.
Have you heard his album Tiny Cities? It's all Modest Mouse covers. I really like it.
"Discipline" by King Crimson...
I'll probably have to stay up all night to finish school work, so I think I'll listen to "Do It" over and over again.

The one soon after that, hosted by Hot Saucerman, with King George VI unveiling his stand-up aspirations nearly made me pull the car off the road. Big, very cruel laughs in that one.

Today I listened to the Violent Femmes debut album 3 or 4 times. And I enjoyed it.
I just got the first Roxy Music album. I like it! I should probably get more.

You should at least get the second one (Music for Pleasure). The ones after that are different (but still good IMO).

Their first two records with Brian Eno are tremendous. The subsequent albums, like Country Life and Siren, are slightly less tremendous, but still great.
Actually, I think Country Life might be my favorite album of theirs.
er, so it's not actually David Bowie on the record?
That whole plot line where Squiggy found that cold fusion generator and carried it around with him all the time is easily the second or third weirdest episode of Laverne & Shirley.er, so it's not actually David Bowie on the record?
Correct. When I pulled the actual vinyl out of the sleeve, it was this instead:

A true story is that I bought the Roxy Music live album at one time and inside I found a Whitesnake record (Slide it In). Some friends who did not share my preferences in music thought I had lucked out and that I should have taken the Whitesnake record and been happy about it instead of taking it back to the store to get the Roxy Music record.

Anyone else here into Richard and Linda Thompson? I've been listening to them a lot lately.
In my book, Richard Thompson's work up through Hand of Kindness in 1983 qualifies him as one of the all-time greats, but for some reason, after that he lost me all but completely. He's obviously still a guitar god (though I saw him live, at my gf's insistence, within the last year and frankly I thought he was phoning it in a bit by this point), but something big went out of his songwriting for me. Spiritual intensity, or conviction, or something. He just never seems to have written any songs since then that really feel like they needed to have been written. (And aaaggh, I know how his cult loves that motorcycle song, but I don't.)
I love The Sundays so, so much. I wish I could find someone else who does.

Because Thompson's early work seems so inspired, this analogy comes to mind: Bob Dylan once said that after some years in limbo, he had to figure out how to do consciously what he had been able to do unconsciously. I think RT forgot how to do the latter and never managed to do the former.
So, hmmm, he goes from smash to trash one album after dumping Linda, and half the songs on that one are about her. Coincidence? I've always suspected that she may have been not only a great singer, but the best muse/critic/quality control he ever had.
You know, that kind of hurts, Dave. When I was feeling the sting of being singled out for derision on the air by Tom, I remember thinking "I bet Dave from Knoxville would understand me. Dave from Knoxville would understand anything."

I did not mean for it to hurt. But aren't you the one?
Ok folks I am coming out. I know NOTHING about Phil Spector. I'm pretty sure he wrote and produced songs for other people? In that case, when I here people say they've been listening to a ton of Phil Spector what are they talking about? What is a good starting point? Can someone clue me in? This is embarassing.
Thanks for the tips guys.
I found a double LP yesterday of The Byrds Mr. Tamborine Ma and Turn, Tur, Turn albums and I must say that side one of Turn, Turn, Turn is flawless.

Speaking of F'd Up, for those who haven't heard, Matador is doing a Buy Early, Get Now for David Comes to Life. For $30 CD/$35 vinyl, you get the album on the release date, a digital download of 5 non-LP tracks, an early digital download of the album (released in 4 parts, 1 part per day on May 10 - 13), a digital download of David's Town, and 4 exclusive 7"s of non-LP tracks.
Sorry if this sounds like an ad for the album, but it's a pretty good deal and also exciting for a record nerd like me.

I got this and I'm listening to the first part of the album right now. Incredible stuff.
I listened to that new Kate Bush record today, too. I've had "Red Shoes" and "Sensual World" for a few years now and I really liked them, I was really looking forward to an update of some of her more underrated material, but "the director's cut" just seemed really unnecessary. While the songs no longer have that early 90s timestamp to them, it was really disheartening to hear everything transposed down, and the new arrangements ranged from boring ("This Woman's Work") to cringeworthy ("Rubberband Girl"). God bless Kate for keeping going, and I can't wait to hear the record of new material.

Listening to "David Comes to Life" for the second time. I know I'll get flak for this, but the album just doesn't seem to connect with me. Sure it has its moments, but on the whole, it just doesn't appeal to me all that much.

Honestly, this is the way I've felt with F'd Up from the beginning but I've just kept it to myself. It's a bit too loud of singing for me. But I guess that is the typical vocals of hardcore, right? It's a genre I'm not very familiar with.

I think you just hit upon the reason I don't particularly care for the album. The vocals.
I know there's some type of narrative involved. But I'll be damned if I can discern it. The vocals don't help in this regard.

I think I was surprised as well as a bit turned off by Damian's vocals when I first heard them but I stuck with it and, ever since THE CHEMISTRY OF COMMON LIFE, I have been completely on board. The new album has been getting a play almost every morning since I bought it last week. I now can't imagine their music without his voice. They are on the top of my "must see" list right now.
I can't really say you're "missing something" though. That would be like trying to talk me into liking oatmeal which I can't even swallow. But at the very least - like you with Fucked Up - I have tried it. It just isn't for me and it probably never will be no matter how hard people try to convince me how great it is.
But it's OK; just like I can eat something else for breakfast, there are a TON of great albums that have been released this year that can fill you up. Some of my favorites so far are this years releases by The Mountain Goats, The Dodos, Obits, Smith Westerns, Telekenesis, Thee Oh Sees, & Kurt Vile. Great stuff, I think.

The "took off my hat and said 'Imagine that!'" part is definitely the biggest phony hippie fantasy to appear in music. There's no way that happens. It's like they thought hippies had some magic Looney Tunes powers or Hobo Magic or something, where they could hide all their hippie hair under a hat and suddenly walk into an office building and fool the boss into thinking they were wearing a shirt and tie just because they had the long tucked up into a top hat they found in a dumpster somewhere.Waterfalls from the remastered vinyl

I gotta thank you's guys that was talking about Bill Fox on here. I got his two albums (there are only two, right) a while back, but didn't get a chance to listen until the four-day road trip back to L.A. that I just completed. There are some awesome awesome songs. I can tell this is going to be an important discovery to me.
Is it okay to admit to both listening to and absolutely loving The Gold Album by The Bouncing Souls? Because if it is, then that's my answer.

I've been listening to ZZ Top's first 6 albums. It's occurred to me that today a band described as 'blues rock' would be the last thing I'd want to listen to, but I love those old ZZ Top records.

Yeah, I think they were trying to simulate Texas onstage. 'Tres Hombres' is my favorite album of theirs, but I'll check out Rythmeen on Master Of Sparks' recommendation. I've been listening to the 'Six Pack' comp, which actually has the first 7 minus Deguello.
I am always disappointed whenever I see greatest-songs-ever lists, and Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago never gets a mention. That first record is an underappreciated gem, as well. And Just Got Paid is incredible, if only for the drumwork.

Ok so when I was about 19 I was at Grimey's in Nashville and I picked up what I thought was John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band but it was Yoko's album of screeches and yelps. I remember the guy behind the counter asking me if I had heard it and I said yeah thinking he was talking about John's album, and he said "Isn't it brilliant!?" And I remember thinking, "Geez cool out, everyone likes this." But now I think how much that guy deserved and "Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww boy, you like THAT?"

Sandinista would probably be higher in my estimation if it was cut down to a single album.
I only know The Stranglers from Butt-head's take on the "Skin Deep" video.
Sparks had about three career highpoints, and some pretty dumb shit. I preferred the first two albums overall. "You Can't Be Too Strong" is one of the few songs that piss me off so much I want to yell back at the speakers, like it was Bill O'Reilly on the radio or somethin.'

That IS a brilliant comp, and the first alb by the Jam I ever owned (bought it on a cassette from Record Town in 1992). There are a lot of really great Jam songs that aren't on that comp though - for instance, "But I'm Different Now;" "I Got By in Time" and the original version of "A Solid Bond in Your Heart." Really, the Jam were a great singles band AND their albums held together well too. I would suggest getting the box set that came out a few years ago - There are essentials on that thing that SNAP! ignores.

I actually thought punk rock was supposed to get rid of overblown monsters like Led Zeppelin and Queen, but I guess we all have our own interpretation of punk rock.
Oh yeah - on one of the early, early archived shows, Tom takes NRBQ apart; IIRC, he claims that NRBQ traffics in the kind of pre-punk "boogie" that punk rock was supposed to get rid of.

Let's Wiki it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boogie_Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boogie_Rock)
This Wikipedia article on "Boogie Rock" mentions Canned Heat, ZZ Top, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Status Quo, Humble Pie, Savoy Brown, Foghat, and Engine. (Engine?) But Tom likes ZZ Top. But then almost nobody's theories about what makes music good match up with their actual tastes exactly.

I've been on a kick of pop-punk stuff I was into from the ages of 16-19. Don't Back Down is so friggin' awesome. It's so catchy with amazing choruses and melodies. They listened to a ton of early Beach Boys and bubblegum stuff before they made this and it shows. The final song on the album is "I Can't Get Over You" and is a duet with Lisa Mahr of the late, great Cub. It really should have been a huge single for them, in a fair and just world.

I'm digesting Miles Ahead right now. If you remember, I am the dude that started the jazz recommendation thread. This one is at the top of my wanted vinyl list:
This is a great, great album that I considered recommending when you opened that thread but thought it might be a little out there. It may also be the only album ever released by a name artist with liner notes by the artist's psychiatrist.

Better or worse than an album produced by the artist's therapist?
"Unentitled" by Slim Cessna's Auto Club...How is it? I have every album through "Cipher" (I even found a copy of The Blackstone Valley Sinners album, which was my gateway into SCAC). I've fallen off the wagon, because they hadn't played in RI in such a long time and when they did recently I was too sick to go. They are one of my favorite live acts.
Speaking of Effed Up (as someone was in this thread back in June), I just saw them on the Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations Christmas Special. They played Jingle Bells.
I recognized the lead singer right away. I was pretty amazed by how "guy on the street" the rest of the band looked. They did a good job!
I love Bert Jansch and think that maybe I am ready for Pentangle.
At a record store I called him "Jansch" and was corrected by an asshole, lonely middle age record collector type who mutter "It's "YAUNSCH" under his breath. I then proceded to pronounce it "Jansch" two more times in the conversation.

Yes, this band is named Diarrhea Planet. Yes, the best song on the 7" is called "Ghost with a Boner".
We Take Care Of Our Own (With Lyrics) - Bruce Springsteen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3Bz0d2xm7U#ws)
What are the thoughts on the new Bruce single?
I LOVE IT! You all know a lot more about music production and arrangement than me but this has so many things to it that I'm picking up.
1) The first few seconds or so has a guitar that subtle sounds like an alarm. It kind of reminds me of London Calling a bit -- it has big marching drums and a guitar that sounds like an alarm sound, but then the melody comes in and overtakes it.
2) I love Bruce's pitch, especially when he references the Superdome/Katrina. it's down a notch (I think) from where it was a bit earlier in the song.
3) AWESOME HAND CLAPS! Such an awesome touch for a song about community togetherness. This could also show up again at the end when backup voices join in.
4) I love the repetition of the "Where's the promise from sea to shining sea" line -- it really tells you what the song is about. Times get tough for us Americans, but we take care of each other and can get past awful times.
5) I'm really looking forward for this song to be used as political propoganda throughout November!

The synth line pushes me away. The message however is timely and timeless.
I might argue pointy and pointless.

1. "We Take Care of Our Own"?1. Evolutionary biology.
2. "We Take Care of Each Other" a much better sentiment?

No, I haven't! Actually, I've heard some of the radio bits they did for that show --but never the whole thing. Do you know if it's available anywhere?

Whoa, this is heavy duty! Thanks for posting!
Lee Ranaldo & Band on Brian Turner's show. Kinda rocking me. I've found Sonic Youth mostly a bore for thirty years now but this is surprisingly scratchy to my Neil & Crazy Horse/Husker Du itch.
Listening to new Springsteen, which I like very much, though it's been a looooonnng time since he made an album where every track's a keeper. The best of this cuts deep and is very rousing. Always up-to-the-minute, he's been listening to the Pogues, apparently.\
As a rule, angry Bruce is good Bruce, I think. Takes a little piss 'n' vinegar to keep his earnestness from tipping over into the murk.

The Moody Blues - On the Threshold of a Dream
I'm building my MBs collection. At first I asked myself why, until I listened to In Search of the Lost Chord for the first time last week. Threshold doesn't quite reach the heights that The Lost Chord did for me, but I liked it.

Heh, I amassed a bunch of Moody Blues albums several years ago, and I think my favorite is To Our Children's Children's Children.
People who listen to this show have great taste...I always assumed - especially from many of the callers - that no one gets a lot of Tom's references.I nearly died from laughter when Tom was talking about some headphones he bought and their heavy low-end (Oct or Nov 2011). "Remember when Sly & Robbie did that one ABBA album" (or something to that effect).

I got to see them last year in SF and didn't expect them to come back so soon since they are from Australia but they are touring the states again now, heads up!!!

It's a very good album. He's still at the top of his game lyric-wise. And the arrangements and production are top-shelf too. [H]is voice is painful to listen to, but it's not so bad that it greatly detracts from the quality of the album. Taken as a whole, it's Dylan's best work in quite some time.

Overall there are three or four solid tracks on Tempest and I don't think you can say the same about either of the past two albums.

I'm not the world's biggest YLT fan, but this is really an excellent album.
Despite them being one of my all-time favorites, I used to be really slow to warm up to new YLT albums. Around "Summer Sun" I decided to just trust them, and take my time letting a new album sink in (but "Popular Songs" I loved from the first listen).

Lately I'm listening to Open Mike Eagle a lot. I discovered him via Paul Gilmartin's Mental Illness Happy Hour Podcast, of all places.
I would like to nominate David Essex's 'Man on top Again!' speech from this as the greatest motivational speech ever. Better than Agincourt, Bosworth, Churchill's 'Fight them on the beaches' or Mike Bassett's half-time team talk.' If you don't feel like wiping out a few Martins yourself after David reveals his plan then you don't have blood in your veins.
I would love to see an actual Martin meet David Essex. A quick 'Hold Me Close', a 'Silver Dream Machine', one 'Gonna Make you a Star!' and of course 'A Winters Tale' and then gobble.

I'm listening to a bootleg of the Rolling Stones at Altamont. The strange thing is that after the killing of Meredith Hunter (which took place at the end of "Under My Thumb" and doesn't register on the audiotape at all), the performance takes off into the fucking stratosphere and is maybe the most incredible Stones concert I've ever heard, and I've heard a few.
I'm not sure if this occurred after the murder, but their performance of "Sympathy for the Devil" at Altamont is phenomenal.
Oh, nec13, just seeing it made me dig out my copy. So fantastic from start to finish.

Why do you consider Traffic prog?
There are no rules, Fredericks, except for this one; you should always agree with your more weathered elders.
At the moment I am listening to the 7th in that fantastic series. It covers 1974-1983, and can be accessed here

It contains these songs, some of which Fredericks may claim are not PROG. But he's wrong.
Yes – Changes
Can – Dizzy Dizzy
Medina Azahara – Busco
Goblin – Suspiria - Originale
Rush – Subdivisions
Rick Wakeman – White Rock
Camel – Another Night
Styx – Boat On The River

I was reading Sylvia Robinson's obituary this morning.
Doug Yule said Sterling Morrison played like Mickey Baker (http://www.furious.com/perfect/yule2.html) so I had to find out who Mickey Baker was.

I'm listening to "The Velvet Underground & Nico" straight through for the first time in over 10 years. Just flowing over me like the first time.
I'm at the end of "All Tomorrow's Parties" right now.
I'm listening to "The Velvet Underground & Nico" straight through for the first time in over 10 years. Just flowing over me like the first time.I realize that it's probably sacrilege to say this, but I think that album would be a million times better sans Nico. I think she's the main reason why I don't think all that highly of that record.
I'm at the end of "All Tomorrow's Parties" right now.
I guess icy, Teutonic vocals really don't do it for me.
This past week of melancholy, DFK and all his prog playlists, and the impending arrival of my copy of "The Road To Red"...

Does he sound better than Jim Derogatis' voice?
I am on a jazz recommendation of the day kick, and today it's Stan Kenton's Artistry in Music. Really wrapped up in the 50's and 60's so far, but it will process into the present eventually. So far I have recommended these;
1952 Milt Jackson Wizard of the Vibes 31-Aug
1953 Duke Ellington and His Orchestra Ellington Uptown 1-Sep
1954 Clifford Brown and Max Roach Clifford Brown and Max Roach 2-Sep
1951 Duke Ellington and His Orchestra Masterpieces by Ellington 3-Sep
1956 Ella Fitzgerald Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book 4-Sep
1949 Duke Ellington Liberian Suite 5-Sep
1957 Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus 6-Sep
1947 Duke Ellington Duke Ellington at Carnegie Hall 7-Sep
1946 Stan Kenton Artistry in Rhythm 8-Sep
Benjamin Booker's recent full-length on the way home from work. I was initially disappointed in it when I first got it a little while back, but it's really grown on me since. He got his start in Tampa, FLA.

Blue Cheer - New! Improved!
Oh man, I haven't listened to my Blue Cheer albums in forever. I'm gonna have to dig them out now.
Mr. Gravy – very nice to see your Meade-based postings. The three-album Chainsaw Kittens run of Violent Religion, Flipped Out in Singapore and Pop Heiress is fantastic. It seems unlikely to happen, but it would be nice if some label (re-)issued FOiS and PH on vinyl. I don’t think either album was every released in that format.

I'd be happy with a Pop Heiress t-shirt, but I think I'm going to have to make a bootleg version.
if you don't have the new album, it's available on heavy yellow vinyl, at a very good price. also, the complete collection of his band prior to the Kittens, Defenestration is available on his bigcartel site for digital download (personally, I have the vinyl). http://tysonmeade.bigcartel.com/ (http://tysonmeade.bigcartel.com/)
I had a much longer post typed, because if there's anyone I'd happily street-team for, it's him, but it was full of dirty name-dropping and assumptions.
I wanted her to sing like a 16-year-old girl who screwed truck drivers.

The latter; I discovered CK in 1992 when a friend recommended Flipped Out in Singapore (I believe he saw them open for the Smashing Pumpkins on their Gish tour). I bought it at a Sam Goody at the mall! Said Sam Goody remains one of the more baffling retail outlets I've ever encountered. It was a chain store in a suburban mall and they had sections devoted to labels like Trance Syndicate.
Lee Hazelwood suffers from mentally calling up both Lee Greenwood and Joseph Hazelwood in my mind.Lee Hazelwood's son suffers mentally from a Planet X fixation. wow...THAT GUY.

that's awesome! I've always maintained that they should have been much larger rockstars than a walk-on t-shirt in the movie Empire Records. I think, for what it's worth, a few of the Smashing Pumpkins tried, but then one got a nasty crack habit, and the other was James Iha.
I'm listening to Kazak Lullabye performed by Keiko Abe and Katarzyna Mycka on Spotify.I was the first viewer of this video. It was good.

Tom Waits. Still getting it, still not liking it.

I gave Waits another try recently. Unfortunately, my opinion of him remains unchanged. He sucks. Captain Beefheart did it first and he did it better.

Reminded me of the hideous drum-based soundtrack to Battlestar Galactica.
Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly"
Gene Ween covering Billy Joel for an entire concert. Awesome "Sometimes a Fantasy" freak out.

Fate in a Pleasant Mood. I'm not sure which era that would be in, because it was written when he was in Chicago but wasn't released until he was in New York. Are the different eras based on the decade the music was released of the location he was in at the time the music was made?
Love me some Sun Ra... really need to get Atlantis on vinyl thoI recently picked up Cosmos. A little raw and I like it.

I missed out on a lot of metal when I was growing up. Recently started getting into weird mid/late period Sabbath likeI don't know much about this stuff; I do (mostly) trust Omar. Listen to him.
