Them too.

That Joy Division box (look, I like the band and I understand their place, but I don't want to hear 30 shitty live tapes of "She's Lost Control", okay?)
I could keep going.

Come on, Colin, you're kidding, right? I mean, just look at this:
I wouldn't say I didn't like it (I do), but I've always been a little skeptical about the rock-nerd fetish for Pavement and their offshoots, and Neutral Milk Hotel. There are probably other bands like this too that I'm forgetting. It's practically an article of faith that anyone with good taste must love these bands, but their stuff all sounds kind of the same to me. I do, however, love GBV, though it took me a while to distinguish between their stuff and the other 90s-indie/jangly-guitar/lo-fi/arcane lyrics bands.
I like Arcade Fire OK but I think they're ridiculously overrated. Not that crazy about Vampire Weekend, CYHSY, The Decemberists, or Death Cab (sorry, Gib Benson!).
I (legally) downloaded The Clean's 2-disc set on the recommendations of Ira Kaplan and Brian Turner, but can't get that into it. But again, I wouldn't say I don't like it.
I also like the cover versions of his songs, and I want him to succeed, but I can't really listen to most Daniel Johnston recordings. And I only kind of like The Beach Boys and most Power Pop. I also appreciate MF Doom/Madvillain more than I actually like listening to him/them. Not a huge fan of Joanna Newsome, but I don't think that's all that unusual. I don't really see the appeal of the MC5 (though again, I downloaded a whole 2-disc set from eMusic). And I prefer "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "You Are Free" to all of Wilco and Cat Power's other, cooler records.
-
Any kind of mash-up, dance music (e.g. Girl Talk).
-
I'm not into the Decemberists either. Talk about all your songs sounding the same. The vocals get pretty tiresome after awhile.
-

I think that YHFT is considered their coolest record. Jim O'Rourke produced it for goodness sake. The hipsters are pissed that they've reverted to their "old sound" now (which is, I must agree, boring.)
-

Agreed.
I'm also a big fan of a bunch of pop-punk bands (I'm currently depressed about the Ergs! breaking up), but I've never really been into some of the others usually placed in the same category (The Steinways, the Unlovables, etc.).
-

What he said. (I saw Arcade Fire live by the way, and in addition to dressing like the "weird" kids from your high school, they were boring as hell.)
Also, Radiohead (our generation's Pink Floyd).
-
Along with most of what has been listed: Trans Am and Atmosphere.
-
I had to Google Jim O'Rourke.
-
I like Radiohead, but I could never get into "OK Computer" which everybody seems to think is their masterwork. I like the stuff they did afterwards.

Everything Beth said, plus:
The Arcade Fire (does everything have to be overly dramatic? Calm down, people.)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
!!!
TV on the Radio
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Hot Hot Heat
Hot Chip
Cold War Kids
Silversun Pickups
Dan Deacon
Franz Ferdinand
Devendra Banhart
Joanna Newsome (I've actually had to leave restaurants, cafes and stores where her albums have been playing)
Kings of Leon
Lavender Diamond
Basically, any band that would be asked to appear in a "Fashion Rocks!" issue of Vogue or something like that. I suppose this goes into the whole "why I dislike hipsters" thing: the answer is because I hate anything having to do with fashion. How good can your music be if you're so busy artfully ripping up your fishnet stockings or getting full-sleeve tattoos?
-
Basically, any band where the members look/dress at all fashionably or look cooler than I do. I hate you all. I don't even care what you sound like!
Me too! I ignore them so easily without even giving them a chance. But I think doing that puts me on the losing end- there are some exceptions in this vague category of bands. The Kills come to mind. I ignored them for a while purely based on their appearance but later on figured out that their music is fun.
Anyway, cool music that I don't like-
Bob Dylan
Pavement
Deerhoof
Ratatat
All post-rock - just turns me off.
Brian Eno after Another Green World
Fiery Furnaces
All the Billy Childish stuff - I like some of what I've heard so far but I'm not completely on-board yet
I really love The Velvets and The Clean though.
-
Also, Radiohead (our generation's Pink Floyd).
Yes, another of mine (though I like Pink Floyd, and I think I like the post-Syd stuff better).
-
The last couple Of Montreal albums have been garbage.
I'll defend Joanna Newsom live, her voice is much better than on the albums.
-

I'll defend Joanna Newsom live, her voice is much better than on the albums.
I think her style is interesting and okay in small doses but she sounds too much like Lisa Simpson.
Of bands that I saw as opening acts in the past that I couldn't stand: The Fiery Furnaces, Deerhoof, and Black Mountain.
I'm pretty sure I just dislike all the bands with animals in their names. Somebody needs to put a ban on any more bands named Wolf or Deer something Cat Power and Dr. Dog might be the only animal bands I like that come to mind.

What are your feelings on Ladyhawk? Neil Young & Crazy Horse? The Groundhogs?

I'm itching to defend so many bands in this thread, but Pavement: I can get behind not liking them.
-
I'd like to add Man Man to my list. Sounds like lame drunk pirates took over a music studio for an hour.
-
I should add Elvis Costello to mine, although I might be coming around on him. I picked up Armed Forces after reading the 33 1/3 book and it's easily the best thing I've heard by him.
-

I'll defend Joanna Newsom in any situation. I love love love her. I don't know anything about Of Montreal besides The Sundaelic Twins, but I really like that record. Are there any others worth checking out, or do they all pretty much sound the same?

Ugh, I saw them a few years ago and it was even worse than the album.

I still enjoy the first couple albums they put out in the late 90s, when they were closer to that Elephant 6 sound. Those albums sound very different from the current ones, which seem like they're trying too hard for that "epic" sound. It was actually their live show that put me off the most, trying way too hard to turn it into a spectacle, like a more flamboyant Flaming Lips.
-

Well, the song 'Requiem For OMM Mk2' is the death of their second era, ushering in a third. Their early stuff was incredibly colourful, happy/twee 60s influenced guitar pop that can be a bit grating in large doses. They went towards a more rampant classicist approach on records like Adhils Arboretum and Satanic Panic In The Attic, the latter of which is my favourite of theirs - incredibly poppy, some excellent melodies but somehow a bit more 'modern' (however many liberal references/homages there are - eg. 'Climb The Ladder' sounds like Todd Rungren).
Some would say they sound the same because of the voice singing them, which is very singular, but their middle records are very good.

-Sleater-Kinney: the Go-Go's if their idea of fun was a Sunday afternoon listening to NPR
-dead prez: robbing pizza delivery guys isn't a revolutionary act, dipshits
-The Knife: so you want to listen to dance music, but you're scared it'll make you also want to have sex or do drugs, and besides you're more interested in scowling than dancing? Have I got the band for you
-Love: the early singles are fine, but Forever Changes is like a slightly-above-average Moody Blues record
-
I guess it only pertains to a certain set of people, but I've never been as huge a fan of the Lawrence Arms as everyone else seems to be.
-
-Love: the early singles are fine, but Forever Changes is like a slightly-above-average Moody Blues record
Ouch! It hurts because I can see it might be true!
-

This just makes me want to go give the Moody Blues another chance.
-
I'm-a have to say R.E.M. I've tried to get into this band, but I was never able to figure out which early-period record was so good that it atoned for everything after 1991. Their trajectory has gone from meh to ugh for me.
-
I had to Google Jim O'Rourke.
Mr. Grote, I recommend you procure copies of Eureka and Insignificance forthwith, if only for the cover art.
-

These made me laugh, even though I do really like Sleater-Kinney. Mostly because they're so LOUD.

I can't think of anything offhand beyond the usual picks (Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, CYHSY). So I'll borrow one from a guy I just ran into while walking back to my apartment:
Guy: You look like you're in a really good mood (I wasn't, actually). What are you listening to?
Me: The Minutemen.
Guy: I don't know them. Can I listen to a bit?
(I hand him the iPod earbuds. He listens to 20 seconds of "The Anchor," then hands them back.)
Guy: They're alright - not intense enough for me. I like stuff like Nine Inch Nails.

Seconded! The records are great, but so is this:

There are definitely bands that fall into that cool-looking category that I do like (Blondie, I guess?) but really I remain mystified by the seemingly unanimous decision that like-minded music fans have made about this being the height of male/female attractiveness:
I get so distracted by the fact that I want to feed these people carbohydrates that I automatically discount their music. Also, it leads to idiots like these getting famous:

Actually, this post has nothing to do with music. I just wanted to share these photos with you all.
-
I don't know any of those people except Karen O and Terry Richardson. Which reminds me: hopeful sign that the 00s might finally be over #1 of 1 (if this has legs maybe I'll start another thread):
I was in St. Marks Books the other day, and there was a whole huge pile of Richardson's porn coffee-table tome on the remainder table, heavily discounted. This might mean that photos that look like the "Beaver Hunt" section of Hustler circa 1983 are no longer considered high art!

Done! Thanks for the tip. Except that one in the lower left corner bugs me a little bit. Call me a prude, but I really think that bestiality is not OK!!

I can't think about this topic. Toooo much to think about.
*brain explodes*

You should really devote at least 60 seconds to the Minutemen before passing judgment on them.
-
Crystal Castles. I don't hate them or anything, they're just not very edifying.
This cements it.

Less an example of prudery than an objection to the impossibility of real consent, surely?
-
That might be true. I have no real objection to the dude being violated by the Octopus, but I'm taking a bold stand against the rape of cute fluffy bunnies!!!!!
-
A few more big ones (a few have been mentioned by other folks):
Husker Du
The Minutemen
Flaming Lips
R.E.M.
-
I don't know, guys, as a life-long Malkmus apologist, it seems to me that Pavement is one of those bands that everyone thinks everyone else likes a lot, but nobody will admit to liking themselves. Except for me! Favorite band of all time.
Back to the topic, I've borrowed a lot from other people's lists, thanks for the reminders:
definitely The Decemberists
Lavender Diamond is awful.
Arab Strap
Moldy Peaches
Will Oldham and his many guises
The Ramones
The Clash
Holy Moly do I hate Interpol
The Flaming Lips
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Arcade Fire
Royal Trux (I'll absolutely love every fifth song I hear by this band, and the rest of the stuff just hurts)
I haven't even bothered with getting to know Clap Your Hands Say Yeah or The Hold Steady based on name alone, so I can't say whether or not I like them.
-
the Melvins
Neutral Milk Hotel
most of that Sublime Frequencies stuff
-
most of that Sublime Frequencies stuff
I have a whole bunch of it, and it seems totally designed to appeal to the collector scum in people (myself included). I can be like, hey, I have a whole album of pop songs from North Korea! That will make my wife want to murder me if I play it, and I'm not so crazy about it either!
I am otherwise into the whole world-nuggets trend generally, though, like that Hungarian comp Well Hung, or that series of 60s pysch from different countries around the world, or the stuff Beth posts.
-
Agreed on the Flaming Lips.
I've tried to like them a couple of times...

Agreed on the Flaming Lips.
I've tried to like them a couple of times...
I think they were really great until they stopped being a rock band. Check out their 1990-1995 output. "the Soft Bulletin" is okay but for some reason the unlistenable garbage that is Yoshimi made them huge.
-
I want to like The Black Keys, but I don't.
I want to like X (and John Doe solo stuff), but I don't.
I don't want to like Olivia Tremor Control, Apples In Stereo, and other Elephant 6 stuff, and I don't. (I DO like Neutral Milk Hotel though)
I like some Neko Case, but I think I dislike more tracks than I like.
-
I don't much like Grizzly Bear. Music is nice. Lyrics...ew buoy.
-

Since Starbucks started selling her album.

I want to like X (and John Doe solo stuff), but I don't.
Ooh, good one! Never got the X love.
-
Also Bright Eyes and Tilly & The Wall.
And Yoko Ono, although I'm not sure if she's considered "cool".
-
To clarify; I don't think Joni Mitchell is 'cool' as say, Eric B, but by cool in this instance I mean 'canonical'.
-
Kimya Dawson/The Moldy Peaches
-
!!!, The Rapture or any other dance-punk band.
Oh yeah, and back when I lived in New York in the early part of this decade, I could never get on board with Fischerspooner, Peaches or anything Electroclash.
-
i'm sure someone's said it already, but radiohead. they seem like decent enough guys and all, but damn if their music don't bore me to tears.
EDIT: and let me just say, i'm mortified that people put the minutemen on here. shame on youse...
-
I thought Kimya Dawson was verboten for FOT because of the "Juno" connection alone...
-
I want to say Sonic Youth, I really want to, but I won't.
However, I will say Live Sonic Youth.
-
I'll say Sonic Youth.
-
I'll say Sonic Youth.
me too.
-
Led Zepplin.
Sorry kids.
-
I want to say Sonic Youth, I really want to, but I won't.
However, I will say Live any Sonic Youth.
Ive never seen what the big deal was with these dirty hipsters but I was always shouted down by other less famous dirty hipsters.
Also Pavementzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (is this really rock?)
-
I'll say Sonic Youth.
me too.
I think the same as Flaming Lips applies for me. I really like them when they decide to perform rock music, like recently in Rather Ripped. When they move out of rock, then, booooooring. Also boring is using your guitar in weird tunings and for sqoinking.
-
Joy Division.
Moan Moan, Bore Bore.
-
-The Knife: so you want to listen to dance music, but you're scared it'll make you also want to have sex or do drugs, and besides you're more interested in scowling than dancing? Have I got the band for you
perfect!!!
-
Is Bruce Springsteen cool or would he belong in uncool music you like? To be fair, I like about 15-20 of his songs, but really dislike everything else.
-
!!!, The Rapture or any other dance-punk band.
I actually like !!! as a band but they are totally undone by their sub-Anthony Kiedis buffoon singer.
The Hold Steady do nothing for me. Who needs Craig Finn when we have Greg Cartwright in the world?
-
the smiths and the cure, im with Rollins on this one..
i can understand why someone would dislike Sonic Youth, but i can put on any one of their albums and listen to it start to finish any day...
i cant stand most of that new Emo Rap, whats the deal with that?
-
I haven't heard any emo rap but I'm excited by the notion.
While we're at it: Rollins. Does nothing for me.
-
I can't stand emo rap. 99 percent of the time the beats suck and it's almost always whiny. I also have a bad taste in my mouth about it because I've met a lot of people in the scene and they haven't been very good people. The only good thing that has come out of the scene is that some of the good elements of it crossed over to mainstream hip-hop.
-
WTF is emo rap?
-
like Atmosphere?
-
I'm afraid I'm going to need some kind of description based on the formal aspects of the genre, not just names of rappers or bands that I don't know, thank you very much.
-
Yeah, can someone link to something? It's fascinating. What's next, lo-fi y'allternative spaghetti boy bands?
-
I don't even know if it has a good description anymore since it has kind of branched out into mainstream and a lot of things are called emo rap that probably are in some ways but lack some of the qualities of how it started. I also am not an expert on it. I normally hear it described as intelligent hip-hop aimed at white kids- many times performed by hipsters. I don't know if that is a fair description anymore... the Minneapolis scene still has that feel. I don't know if I buy the "intelligent" label.
-
These two are a couple of the bands that were big on the Mpls. scene a year or two ago. I stopped paying attention.
Doomtree:

Mel Gibson and the Pants

-
And of course Atmosphere:

-
We should probably just wait for Trembling Eagle to explain this all.
-
Hm, that wasn't so bad. The Atmosphere song was just kind of mediocre, but I kind of liked Doomtree, even though they were basically a cross between Digable Planets and a Benetton ad.

Saw this mentioned at the AV Club today:
Music tastes link to personality (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/7598549.stm)
My favorite is the description of Indie: low self-esteem, creative, not hard working, not gentle
-
That doomtree thing seemed okay. Unfortunately, I have a real hard time separating hip hop from the idea of race politics, so I can never listen to stuff like that, because white people make it.
I like intelligent rock music aimed at black people. What's that called?
-
I tried. I really tried.
Elvis Costello
Black Flag
Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs!
Guided By Voices
Kanye West
Bad Religion
N.W.A.
UK Subs
Sonic Youth
Bruce Springsteen
Faith No More / Mr. Bungle
I never really tried.
Wilco
Small Faces
Blur

I'm kinda surprised by all the Sonic Youth backlash. I wasn't blown away by their more recent stuff but the first few albums are so great. I have only seen them live once so I can't tell how good they are as a live band. But I gotta say, when I saw them live, they did the entire Daydream Nation album and that was one of the most memorable live acts I've ever seen- so thorough and professional!

TV on the... no, wait, they're not aiming at black people, are they? I dunno, Mos Def? He's aiming himself at black people, but they appear to be ducking. Coldplay?
I'll have to ask around.

Sonic Youth are on my list too. Sorry.

Do you ever have those moments where you ask someone to listen to something or you put something on in the car while someones with you and you realize that they probably think it really sucks? That happens to me all the time. You all of the sudden become aware of why the record you adore hasn't gone platinum.
-
no, i just assume i never listen to bad music.
there. i said it.

Gang Gang Dance
-
In a word: Animal Collective.
Although Panda Bear isn't totally horrible.

MF Doom, a lot of people i work with LOVE him, but i dont get it... the wisper rap thing does nothing for me.
-

I thought he was more mumble-rap than anything; I read "whisper rap" and I think the Ying Yang Twins. And most of Doom's appeal hinges on his whole cliche/truism-tweaking "oh hey those goofy phrases scan really well as rhymes without sounding forced" style, plus dude is just straight-up funny sometimes. Ever hear any of his older stuff from the early '90s with KMD, when he was going under Zev Love X? It's pretty different, more of that Native Tongues style.
(Also, this is a weird coincidence, as I'm actually wearing my MF DOOM shirt today.)

yeah i have heard some of his early stuff and dont dislike it. i do however really like the monster island czars albums and the Grimm/Doom album, however he did more production on that stuff. but i gotta say the stuff he has done the last few years i just dont like. however i really like the stuff Grimm and Megalon have put out since the split...

The Fiery Furnaces
i saw the Fiery Furnaces about a year ago, i thought that they where the Flaming Fire, got real excited because a few weeks before the show i heard the Flaming Fire live on WFMU. after the first song i had a WTF moment... needless to say i figured it out after the show.

Quite Possibly. I've given them enough listening time and I've even seen them sleepwalk through a show or two.. I just dont get it.

I haven't heard any emo rap but I'm excited by the notion.
While we're at it: Rollins. Does nothing for me.
Sonny Rollins? That old jazz guy?
I myself never liked the Who.

I thought Kimya Dawson was verboten for FOT because of the "Juno" connection alone...
I kind of like Kimya Dawson. And I didn't hate Juno.
I think the idea of something being forbidden just because Tom hates it is repulsive. Plus, Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, and JJ Jameson are all in Juno, and they're all still awesome.
-
Black Kids. Grr. Saw them open for Mates of State last year and they blew out some equipment, stood on stage for a long time, then did a weak set with the lead singer doing a shitty Robert Smith impression. And after THAT they got signed. I still agree with Tom's old statement that we already have enough bands.

This guy was in Juno?!

I've become on the fence with the Animal Collective. They have moments of brilliance but the 13 minute jams of completely forgettable music really make it hard to be very wholehearted in any endorsement of the band. They are amazing 15% of the time, good 20% of the time and boring as hell the remaining 65%. Is that a great band?
On the subject of Michael Cera, I wonder how long he has left of being awesome. I don't blame the guy for riding the train he is riding, but my guess is that he will start being the best part of bad movies for a while and then become just another part of bad movies the way that Jack Black did.

Blasphemy!
Just kidding. Of course the idea of disliking something because Tom dislikes it is silly. Almost as silly as using the word "verboten." I really did hate "Juno," though, with or without the Best Show blessing.
I also really dislike Led Zeppelin, as Spoony mentioned earlier. Take that, Tom!

michael cera plays george michael bluth in just about everything. im really pushing for him to expand; i dont want to become bored with him.
-
I too wonder what will happen to him once he grows up and becomes a proper adult. I hope for the best.

He'll replace John Cusack in all those shitty movies.

I love Kimya Dawson. Honest, funny songwriting from an honest funny person who doesn't have a pretentious bone in her body.

I've always thought the exact opposite. Isn't she a hippie?
-
I have no idea. But the first word that comes to mind when I think of hippies isn't "pretentious". It's more words like "phish", "reggae" "frisbee" and "organic"

not to mention: broom skirts+hemp purses+dirty feet+dread locks
pretentious and hippie is a judgement best served on a case-by-case basis.
-
When I hear "hippie" I think "dirty" and then I think "self righteous" and sometimes I think "really passive aggressive".
-
Towns with a lot of hippies (e.g. Boulder) tend to have a lot of restaurants I like. On the downside, they tend to have a lot of concerts that I don't like.
Plus, I think that hippy girls can be pretty cute. I like the earth mother/peasant dress angle, yes sir.

aka "peasant skirts"

When I hear "hippie," I think "parents," and then I think "goddamn parents."

this makes me think of patton oswalt on "feeling kinda patton"
"oh hey, man, we sold your bed for belly dancing lessons."

I made fun of MGMT last week. To their face. It was glorious. I'm still glowing for the opportunity that was handed down to me from above.
