Friends of Tom Secret Santa Gift Exchange
If you would like to participate in this year's FOT Secret Santa Gift exchange, please send an email to fotsecretsanta@gmail.com no later than November 25th at 11:59PM EST (try to get them in by midnight, por favor...)
Include in the email:
- FOT Username
- First and Last Name (like, what people call you in real life)
- Full address where you can receive packages
- If you don't want to receive baked goods or have dietary restrictions please include a note about that.
- Subject line: Secret Santa
I haven't decided whether to pick names out of a hat or a cat, but I'll let you know what I come up with.
If no one objects, I'd say the price limit on a gift should be $20 or less.
No price limit!
PS. If you sign up, feel free to use this thread to post your interests. Especially if you don't have a lot of posts on the site that would let people know what sorts of goodies to send you.
-
No meat through the mail, please.
-
Jeez, MOS. I SAID I was sorry!
-
done.
-
Done!
-
No meat through the mail, please.
No Rahm Emanuel care package for you!!!
-
$200 or less?
-
This should be loads of fun! I won't tell the police if anyone wants to send me contraband of any kind.
-
$200 or less?
Only for you. And only if you're going to be my secret santa again. Which can be arranged.
But really, I promise not to cheat....
-
Yes! Honestly, I hope I get Martin, only because I've never sent a package to Sweden before.
-
Done and done.
-
done, and this time i remembered to include the address where i'll actually BE over the break.
college kids: don't use your school address if you won't be there for a few weeks. then you'll have to wait ages to get a bundle of goodness from jixby phillips.
-
i hope i dont send someone a Baron fun pack with junk they already own.
-
I just realized there was no price limit last year. Is 20 dollars too low? I was just going based on other gift exchanges I had done... lemme know.
-
Done! 20 sounds good.
-

I don't see a reason in this case to impose a limit, considering we don't work together and this isn't mandatory. If there is another reason beyond those however, I can accept that.
-
I think the rule last year was "don't be a shithead"
-
Good point. No limit. No shitheads.
-
No shitheads.
Uh oh, I may want to reconsider my participation.
-
16 people so far :)

-
Yes yes YES! I am so excited about this. This is one of the few things I like about the holidays.
-
I am in, though I fear both of my links from last year have voluntarily left the game. Laurie was my Secret Santa, I was TL's.
-
I can't wait! I love sending things in the mail.
Whoever gets me, I want a bottle of tequila. The kind with a worm in it.
-
I just want my SS to take that "no price limit" ruling to heart.
-
I'm interested but suck at getting cool gifts. Especially for strangers! Oh what to do!
-
Sign up! Sign up!
-
It's easy, snograg: just get your Santee something you'd like or hate yourself. No middle ground.
-
this years SS theme:taxidermy.
-
I'm in!
-
Alright, I'm in. On our roadtrip from Pitt to Seattle last week, I had archived a bunch of old shows to listen to along the way, and one of them was I believe the xmas episode from last year. Tom spoke of Secret Santa'ing and my girlfriend (a new convert) was all excited at the idea of participating this year. So whoever I get will be getting two times the gifting power* for the price of one!
*this may mean that someone will get two trucknutz instead of one though.
-
*this may mean that someone will get two trucknutz instead of one though.
I would love owning a single truck nut.
-
Count me in please.
-
I just signed up. Why not, right? Y'all seem like good people.
I don't post often, so ... uh ... I like music I can't readily find (though I'm good at finding stuff) so foreign or non-local-to-me tunes - new wave and "garage/post-punk" especially.
I read a lot (when I'm not in school) - Larry Brown, Harry Crews, Thomas Wolfe, Will Self, Oscar Wilde, Martin Amis, etc ... that type of stuff. Anything interesting, really. Non-fiction is rad, too. Gimme something I've never even thought about.
I'm a printmaker and book/paper-maker. If you're my pick, you'll most likely get something handmade with a non-handmade product incorporated in the total package. Them's the rules/breaks. Hey - I'm a non-traditional student. Gotta make do. And it makes me happy to make things like that.
Anything else I'm missing?
-
Done.
Am moving to NY from o/seas just before Christmas so I would love something that helps me blend in like an A-Z or a I heart NY t-shirt.
-
Respectfully, and with not a single speck of ill-will directed at those who have already done so...
I think asking for specific stuff is kind of going against the flow of the whole Secret Santa vibe.
Your friend 4-ever,
dfk
-
Oh I asked posters who hadn't been here long to post some interests :)
-
Yeah, sorry - I don't post all that often so peeps may just know that I'm from Nebraska - so they may assume that I'm really dull and don't know much about anything, which is most certainly not the case! That's everyone else from Nebraska. :P
You don't have to send me those things specifically.
Just sayin' ....
-

that can definitely be arranged. Somehow.
-

Taxidermy rocks. I'm definitely in.

let's just be sensitive to those who requested no meat in the mail...
-
I really hope I get Fido. It would be a lot of fun to mail something to someone that is three blocks away.

Maybe people (in a separate thread?) could post the name of a person or two on the board that could vet the gift ideas, so the gifter could PM those people if needed? I'm just worried about, say, a vegetarian getting a jerky-of-the-month club membership. Or a calculus problem-of-the-month getting sent to someone other than, say, a DFK.

i am worried that Grote will get a full pair of truck nuts.
-
He definitely will if I pull his name. In fact, I think it's a safe bet at this point he's pretty much guaranteed at least one set of em now no matter who pulls him.
Lucky s.o.b.
-
It's good to have a backup.
-
if I get someone from nebraska, they'll get either 1)corn 2) overalls or 3)dairy queen gift certificates.
I've been to nebraska. these items are really the only things of interest for those people. anyone who says any different is a liar.

I know it's terrible quality but I was bored at work and wanted to use Photoshop. Been a LONG time since I was somewhat good at it.
-
I spent the night in North Platte NE a few weeks back, and they also had a Domino's pizza. Just one, and only the one, but boy were they proud of it. It was actually the first restaurant my hotel listed for ordering food in the little local fare packets they leave on the dresser, and I'd bet if pressed, they'd even say it was "eye-talian" food too.

Don't judge a town by the parts of it next to the interstate.
Also, I hear that Lincoln is an okay town.
I guess I'm in, also.
-
I also once bought some of ... uh ... "Bryce's favorite" in Ogallala, during a stopover when I was taking the Greyhound cross country.

Never mind.

I'm psyched for this.

Hey guys, I think I'm going to have to back out of this. I lost my job today and I don't think I'll have the money even for a little gift.
-
:(

I'm with Emily, Gilly. You're a great guy. Give me your address.
-
Hey, I appreciate it guys. This does suck big time especially during the Christmas season but I hope to land back on my feet soon. I have a few contacts that I hope can get me there but I have to wait and see. Fingers crossed.
-
I'm sorry, Gilly.
-
Gilly I'm so sorry to hear that! How awful. :(
-
31 people!
-
31 people?
Hmm...who's the odd one out NOT getting a gift?
-
I'll work it out, don't worry...

Sounds like that schooling is paying off.
-
exactly.
-
Gilly, that sucks, I m sorry. I ll send you a present too. I can t wait for my Truck Nutz, though. Last summer I actually had a team of interns print and distribute a series of Truck Nutz photos to the cast and crew of the play we were working on.
-
I've applied everywhere and there's nothing. I even applied to do overnight stock at Walmart. :'( There are zero jobs available and all the seasonal jobs are long gone if there were any to begin with.
-
Don't take it personally... this job market is bad anyway, and most companies don't hire in the 4th quarter even if the economy is booming.
-
hopefully after the black friday rush these chains will start hiring (at least) seasonal help. When does your wife get out of school?
-
Hopefully. She graduates in May so there's light at the end of the tunnel. I'm just hoping I can find something to pay rent until then.
-
2 more days to sign up before everybody gets matched up! Bumpy bump.

good. I was starting to run out of space in my fridge to store these bottles of my own urine. We can ship early, right?
-
Oh sure. But everyone should wait til xmas to open their gifts... or at least your recipient should... some things get better the longer they ferment.
-
i hope i get
Martin Dave emma angstrom Sarah Spoony Andy...i dont know. im too excited/anxious.
-
(She picked me first, you guys.)
-
She didn't list me there, since we are the same person.
-
She I didn't list me myself there, since we are the same person.
-
am I missing out? have the santa's been given?
-
Nope. I'll pick the names out of a "hat" (basket/bucket) and send out the matches tonight after the show.

Why not a box? Or a bag? Or an orange crate?
-
or a Hate Pit.

A (wo)man can be an artist... in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good she is at it. Erika's art is Secret Santaing. She's about to paint her masterpiece.

It's my Chanukah basket.
Got a problem with that, Hitler?
-

Got a problem with that, Hitler?
*I* don't have a problem with it. But Our Lord might.
-
I'm not trying to be anti-semitic, but if it's not too late I suggest this as your modern equivalent to the basket thing: http://www.random.org/lists/
It's truly 100% random!
-
it also can't be. don't make me explain the math.
-
Ok I used the basket and I'd say that was pretty fucking random. I emailed everyone their matches. Let me know if you didn't get yours or if you have questions and happy shopping!
-
it also can't be. don't make me explain the math.
I definitely won't make you explain math that I wouldn't understand, but maybe someone can still explain this to me: Do we let our secret santee know who we are when we send our presents? I know we keep it secret at least until then, but I don't know if I need to hide my identity on sending. Forgive this stupid, insolent question.
-
When I did this last year, I revealed my identity when I sent my package. It makes sense to me that you want the person to know who sent them the gift - otherwise they won't know who to thank and will post on this thread saying "Thanks to whoever sent me this nice stuff."
-
Whoever gets my gift (I'm looking at you, [redacted]!) will know it's from me. The human-sized box with air holes, with a big "UTLANDSPAKET" stamp on it, will be a dead giveaway.
-
How do we learn our Santee's shirt size? Let the stalking begin.
-
what if erika just sent her name to everyone. that would be a funny joke.
-
Wait, that was a joke?

I never did find out who sent me a dead, stuffed mouse with wings sewn onto it.

me. I forgot about that one.

I see Andy didn't take his Adderall today..
-
My mommy screamed when I opened up that present on Christmas Day. :'(
-
Quick question. Did anyone get Spike?
-
nah. no spike this year.
-
what if erika just sent her Spike's address to everyone. that would be a funny joke.
I was wondering why my Santee has an address of 143 Dungeon Way...
-
I think the rule last year was "don't be a shithead"
I kinda broke that rule (although it wasn't completely my fault) but I'm making up for it this year.
I made the mistake of ordering something online and having it shipped directly to the person. I figured everything was fine until I got an email in mid-January telling me that the order never shipped and they were refunding me. I think it was shitheads.com. Should have known better.
So if you didn't get anything last year I'm probably the shithead that didn't send it to you. I've banished myself to my own personal hate pit and will be re-sending an even better gift this year.
-
So you're sending something to last year's Santee as well as this year's? It would only be proper.
-
I had something really awesome picked out before getting my assignee, only to find out that it is inappropriate for them. Damn it!
But I've got it sussed out now. Going to be sent out a week from today.
-
Taking the Baron's advice I had some Fundies custom made. One side says "Helloooooo..." and the other side has my Santee's name.
-
I'm sending a variety of pickled products (eggs, okra, pigs feet, etc...)
-
And, based on Andy's previous post, we all know what they're pickled in.
-
I'm sending mine out next week. With any luck it will arrive in time for the Big Day, but you never know with ocean liners these days.
-
My recipient should open mine whenever they get it or at least within a day. It will include something somewhat perishable. I'll try to send it as close to xmas as I can.
-
I've drawn a complete and total blank for mine, although I have a few ideas that still might pan out.
THIS IS HARD, SANTA.
-
Wow I got mine today. That was quick, Santa. But I don't know who you are on the boards. Perhaps you really are Gene Simmons?
I'm floored. The poetry of his writing is second to none. This book also comes with a velvet elastic closure, and a satin ribbon to mark my place. Classsssssy.
-
Am I allowed to ask the person whose name I got what they would like or am I supposed to send my gift anonymously?
-
Am I allowed to ask the person whose name I got what they would like or am I supposed to send my gift anonymously?
They should find out who you are when they get your gift.
-
Oh, I probably should have put my actual name in the gift note. Glad you like the book, Beth. I didn't know it was going to have a ribbon bookmark. That's awesome.
-
I didn't identify myself, but my Santee will be able to figure out who I am without too much trouble if s/he so chooses.
-
I did identify myself, but I'm pretty sure my person already knows who has his/her name.
My person can feel free to open the package at any time. Nothing perishable or time-sensitive inside, but I don't mind if he/she doesn't want to wait.
-
I'm too am stumped what to get my Santee. They posted what they would actually like but I feel like something more is in order...I forgot how anxious i get when trying to pick out a good gift!
-
Oh, I probably should have put my actual name in the gift note. Glad you like the book, Beth. I didn't know it was going to have a ribbon bookmark. That's awesome.
It is! And I say, who better to write about prostitution from a semi-feminist perspective than Gene Simmons? Am I right, people?
The intro goes something like this:
One day, long ago, two Neanderthals were nestled together in their cave, a chick and a dude. The chick said to the dude, "I want you to go out into the freezing cold and risk your life hunting for me, while I stay in this nice warm cave. But don't worry, I've got something to give you in return----sex!" So the dude hunted, then came back and banged his chick, and it made her feel powerful, or something.
I'm paraphrasing, of course, but it's not too far off from how he writes.
POETRY.
-
I almost forgot to call in gay today and not buy anything.
My little elf, your presents are gift wrapped and ready to be shipped as soon as I'm done striking today.
-
Holy s-hit, only two weeks to go! I gotta get on this.
-
I did identify myself, but I'm pretty sure my person already knows who has his/her name.
My person can feel free to open the package at any time. Nothing perishable or time-sensitive inside, but I don't mind if he/she doesn't want to wait.
I didn't wait. Thank you so much for the cool package!
I got LOADS of new music to listen to, a journal booky-thing, a bacon air freshener and a new book to read. :)
You're an excellent Santa, MOS.
-
I am scared to death s/he will be small, and I will send too large, or worse, they will be large, and I will send too small. I am literally terrified with fear. And they like music way hipper than me, so my options are dwindling. DAMN YOU SECRET SANTA AND YOUR SECRETS YOU KEEP FROM THOSE WHO WOULD COURT YOU
-
And they like music way hipper than me, so my options are dwindling.
Ah, you're talking about me then. Medium for small-leaning shirt brands like American Apparel, small for most brands.
I'll be happy to send you my suit measurements if you wish.
-

Oh good, I hope you enjoy it. An All-Ohio music extravaganza awaits!
-
I just want to make a public statement that my Santee MAY get their gift a little late. Took me longer to get on this than I wanted to and shipping on the items isn't helping. So if you don't have anything come the 25th fret not. It will be there! (Possible) Apologies in advance!
-
Shipped!
-

i ran into this as well, dfk. hence, i refused to send any music or clothes (which was what i really wanted to get my secret santa) because i feared i would get the wrong size or send music they already had or would hate.
-
I think a mix cd or something would be a nice gesture. Regardless if they like the music or not, I think it's a cool idea to give a mix kind of either giving the santee an idea of what you are into, or just a good "theme" mix. I'll probably throw one in for my santee just because i like making mixes and the potential idea of introducing somebody to some new music.
-
Books are always wonderful gifts.
-
true. i always go pillaging through amazon.com during the christmas season for books. im THE book giver and no one has complained yet.
although, my secret santee didn't throw me a bone in the secret santa helper thread so they are getting rogue gifts made by yours truly that im crossing my fingers theyll enjoy. :)
-

or possibly :-[
it could go either way.
-
WFMU merch is a nice way to go too. Everyone here likes FMU and it gives money to the station!
Also, everyone likes stickers. (If you don't, I feel sorry for you.)
-
Got to say, I'm not a fan of them.
I gave my Santee a big box full of miscellaneous stuff some of which, at least, s/he may enjoy. At the very least, all the bubble wrap will be fun to play with.
-
Oh man. I love little stickers I can stick on my lighters so no one steals them.
Wait. Maybe I'm too old for this shit. (probably not)
-
stickers are for queers.
-
I do love playing with bubble wrap.
-
my secret santa is screwed.
-
Your Santa or your Santee?
-
santee. I'm working on it, but I've been busy and can't come up with any ideas. looks like I'll end up priority overnighting.
-
I am now officially terrified, and wish I had stayed out of the game, because I fear a massive failure-to-deliver-the-goods coming on.
-
Try to think regional. For instance, Kentucky Santas might like to let their recipient know how lucky they've been gettin.'
-
i researched my santee: i googled them, looking for blogs, myspace, etc. i even spent hours sifting through old posts on threads looking for clues. its creepy, but it gets the gears turning; i still didnt come out ahead, but the receiver of my gifts will hopefully not be disappointed.
PS i want to see pictures of gifts already received and opened.
-
Shipped!
Now it's up to the postman (http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=293605f5205626476bh7.jpg) to deliver it on time.
Also, I totally blew my Santa cover, but that's alright, right? Had to put "from:" on it, next to the contents declaration ("drugs, value (street) $5,000").
-
I shipped mine the other day, but I accidentally forgot to disclose to the post office that there is indeed both liquid and fragile material in my package, so .. hopefully they won't x-ray it and think it's some kind of hazardous homegrown device & then delay delivery.
So, hopefully you'll get it soon, but if you don't - that's why.
-
I hope I get mine out in time! I have 2 final critiques this Monday & Tuesday then I will have more time to devote to good anonymous gifting. It's hard when I can't find much on my Santee either. Maybe I'll try the creepy Googling and MySpacing idea ....
-
... and wouldn't you know it - it worked!
-
im 2/3 of the way through ONE of the gifts im sending my secret santa FOT. at this point, i dont even care if they like it, i dig it no matter what.
-
Got mine today - thanks, Chris L - you're my favorite Marylander!
-
Apparently I received my gift at home. Looking forward to opening that up when I get back in a week.
-
Yesterday I got my idea for what to send.....today mine arrived from Brooklyn. Am I supposed to open it?
-
I believe it's up to you, Dave.
-
Yesterday I got my idea for what to send.....today mine arrived from Brooklyn. Am I supposed to open it?
I suppose that depends on how much you want a kickball filled with cocaine.
-
I would save it till Christmas.
that way you only have to resist the temptation for one week before you can have a ballin' new years with champagne and cocaine!
(did i use ballin' correctly, Sarah?)
-
The idea that someone would send cocaine as a secret santa gift amuses me to no end.

I used to fill a little baggie with powdered sugar and put it in my Mom's stocking. Christmas rails!

You're welcome. Hope you like it. Oh, and suck on that, Edgar Allan Poe.
-
I'm sending mine out Monday, sorry I took so long Santee!
Same here - mine's going out monday or tuesday!
-
I sent mine this past Wednesday. You will hopefully get it by the 18th or 19th, Secret Santee.
-
Mine is going out later this week, but I think my Santee will be forgiving when they see what I've cooked up.
-
Mine is going out later this week, but I think my Santee will be forgiving when they see what I've cooked up.
Fixed?!
-
Mine will also be going out Monday or Tuesday.
-
I'm waiting on one thing to come, but my Santee should have it either way well before the 25th. OR ELSE.
-
i got home today after being away for a month, and i just couldn't help it - i opened mine early. yesno is a fantastic secret santa with bizarre, wonderful taste in books.
mine's going out tuesday! i swear!
-
I am just waiting for mine to come in the mail and then need to send from England so may be just before or a little late. sorry!!!
-
I hope people are announcing right away that they've received their presents even if they've decided not to open them till later. I will worry until I read confirmation here from my Santee.
-
I'd like to remind my Santee to open their gift as soon as they receive it. Please please. There are some time-sensitive things in there.
And it will be mailing out tomorrow.
-
ive been trying to figure out how long it will take to send my gift (2/3 of it will be sent tomorrow), however, the final piece of what im sending my santee will arrive after the 24th: ETA unknown.
sorry.
-
I sent mine this past Wednesday. You will hopefully get it by the 18th or 19th, Secret Santee.
Try the 15th. Weee!
I refuse to open it though until the 25th. We were so excited to get it, the gf and I bought a big ol' tree this year, despite the fact we said we weren't going to buy gifts for ourselves since we bought a big ticket item in November blah blah. So your box is the king of the tree skirt this year, can't wait to do all them rails!

So you're stuffing his package under your skirt. That's where the box is kept.
-
I'm sending mine by the end of the week--money was a bit tight at the beginning of the month. I think it'll get there by Christmas, but if it's a couple days late nobody panic.
-
I received mine. Thanks Santa!
Dear Santee,
I'M WORKING ON IT.
Sorry, the holidays are so tense.
dfk
-
My li'l elf should get his or her presents by the end of tomorrow.
-
I got my package today and, for the second year running, Samir was my Secret Santa. Yay for me!
I got cool stuff, and I'm posting pictures to prove it.
A DVD of a Paul Merton TV series
(No picture. It's a DVD-R. Use your imagination.)
A collection of weird comic art:

A book of Kanye West etiquette suggestions:

And the crown jewel is this piece of sartorial majesty:

Sorry for the crappy photography but I had to return the rug to the Stooges when I was finished.
Thanks Samir!
-
thanks for the evidence MoS. ive been anticipating seeing what everyone got. not enough photos around here.
-
I'm amazed it got there so fast, MOS. Mailed it on Saturday afternoon. Glad you dig!
Though disappointed that I couldn't send you the beef chart (http://www.angus.org/pubs/lit/pr_lit_detail.html?qrystring1=%22%25X%2FK%0A) I'd ordered.
-
I so want that beef chart.

You will have to fight me for it.

Why does "beef chart" sound so dirty?

Why does "beef chart" sound so dirty? (don't judge)

probably thanks to those apes out there who refer to their junk as various form of beef/meat.
-
I received the items from my Secret Santa yesterday!
A glass fish wine decanter, which is fantastic:

A lava lamp (in a style I have not seen before, too):

A native american magnet, two incense burners, an anthology of noir novels by David Goodis and the book War Of The Newts by Karel Capek (both of which I look forward to reading) and a DVD of Roadhouse with Tom's own commentary!
Thank you very much, whoever had my name, but I didn't see on the package or insert who you are!
-
I didn't post a photo before, but here is the book that Chris L. sent me:

What, no mention of the bubble wrap, wwwes?
-
Wow, Wes got a LOT of swag!
I'm constantly second guessing my gift choices for my santee. I'm a terrible gift giver to people I know, let alone strangers!
-
im a great gift giver. (im bragging)
-
What, no mention of the bubble wrap, wwwes?
Did I fail to notice novelty bubble wrap?
And thank you, Sarah, if you are my anonymous benefactor.
-
No, I just used your present as a chance to get rid of all the bubble wrap I had hanging around. It doubled well as wrapping paper, I thought. And you're very welcome. To tell the truth, I envisioned you chucking almost everything once you were amused by it.
-
if you gave away all your bubble wrap, how are you staying warm this winter?
also, I just decided on a present today, but my present is going to rape all of your presents.
-
You can never have too much bubble wrap. Never know when it will be useful. On an additional note, my package went out today, and I hope hope hope that it does not break.

Did my Secret Santee get a delivery today?
-
Did my Secret Santee get a delivery today?
Got it yesterday! Thanks! But I haven't opened it yet - I'm experimenting with delayed gratification, though I can't promise I'll wait until the 25th.
Still haven't sent mine off... be patient, santee.
-
You can open the box. I wrapped everything. You know, provided it didn't get destroyed in transportation or torn open by customs officials or something.
-
I just got my gifts FOR my santee yesterday. Going to try my hardest to send them tomorrow. I feel like I need to add more stuff but I am out of ideas! Wait...I just got one! TO THE MALL!
-
I sent my gift out yesterday. My santee should get it in the next few days.
it's not really wrapped in a traditional sense but I don't think it will ruin any christmas day surprise
-
I liked buying my secret santa gift because I actually had to put some thought into it.
I have 7 nieces and nephews, which means first of all that all grownups are SOL.
And because there is no way in hell I can get proper gifts they will actually like (since they're all at ages where their interests change wildly year to year, and most of them live in another state so I don't know what those interests are) this year it was just Amazon gift cards x 7. Boring and unthoughtful, but it means they might actually get something they like out of it.
-
I had a last minute idea too, and it turned out great. I'm still waiting on one thing to come in the mail though before I send mine out - damn your eyes media mail - HOPEFULLY TOMORROW.
Santa is gonna be on blast this weekend getting this to my Santee. :(
-
my santee should receive my gift within a week, HOWEVER, the final third wont come until muuuch later...no thanks to where i ordered it from.
in the end, i hope you appreciate it nonetheless.
-
Just got mine today from "A Friend of Tom" from Knoxville. Dave, I'm looking your way...but I could be wrong?
I am going to wait until Christmas to open. But whoever sent to me, thanks.
And again, to my santee: it's coming it's coming!

Alas, it is not me. I am unnerved to know that there is another in Knoxville who has not made contact, though. It makes me worry more about that truck with the Monkees bumper sticker that keeps parking in my cul-de-sac.
-
im more anxious to know who my secret santa is than what they sent.
-
Thanks, Susannah! This compilation is great and I'm looking forward to reading the book. You covered basically the only two things I like- indie comedy and garage rock quite well.

The Andrew Earles sidebar in this sounds great.
-
I must say thank you to my Santa. I haven't unwrapped the gifts but a whopping FIVE GIFTS is WAY more than I expected. Who could the other Knoxvillian be?
-
Many thanks to Colin for the Sisters EP! I didn't have a physical copy of it, which is always nice to have. Also, I looooooove colored vinyl. And the picture on the inside sleeve makes me happy. And the copy on the back of the EP makes me giggle like a schoolgirl. <333333
I'm not so good at delayed gratification. Clearly.

I'm glad you liked it!!
I get so nerve wracked over these things but admittedly you're an easier FOT to shop for plus I always assume people want records, I know I do.
and of course, you're very very welcome.
-
Oh God, my Santee will hate me. How could I have thought she would like 13 hours of Hank Williams music. What's WRONG with me.
-

Man now I REALLY wish that package from Knoxville was from you, Dave.
-
Grrr, still waiting on that ONE thing to get here before sending mine out. I may have to adjust the plan today some though in order to drop it off in time (Luckily my person lives on the west coast too, so I should still be able to get it to her/him in time regardless). Sorry Santee. :(
-
I'm too am waiting for something I ordered. It should be here by Monday. Sorry santee. I'm doing my best. You might get it a day or two after xmas. :-[
-
The gift I was putting together is now complete and will go out today. I can say without humility that it is awesome.
-
Many thanks, GeeOff75, for the DVD of easily the greatest movie ever made: Mr. Brooks! Now I'm all set for Tom's version!
I just sent my gift off to a FOT in a certain Appalachian city. I hope it gets there in time.
-
I'll get mine sent off Monday latest. Grrr. Way later than planned.
-
i finally got something small i was waiting for in the mail today to complete the gift - my stuff will be off bright and early monday morning - so should arrive shortly after x-mas i am thinking.
-
Mine is in the air! Should land by Tuesday.
-
same here.
-
If anyone still needs some hints....

Steak gift card!
-
So I received a package today from Forrest in Manhattan and, turns out,
IT'S THE BEST FUCKING SECRET SANTA GIFT EVER.
An explanation:
Supertramp's Breakfast in America LP as autographed by Tom Scharpling, Paul F. Tompkins, Fred Armisen, and Todd Barry:

Either Todd or Fred's signature; not sure. 9/11 joke?
"Best of luck!"
Thanks very much, Forrest, for an excellent gift!
Also thank you to Tom, Paul, Fred, and Todd for lending their signatures! Amazing gift!
-
The gift I was putting together is now complete and will go out today. I can say without humility that it is awesome.
Wow. You were not kidding. Well done.
-
holy moley Forrest!
now that's what a gift should be!
-
OK, that's it, everybody should just give up. What a great gift!
-
OK, that's it, everybody should just give up. What a great gift!
I'm not gonna get mine sent out till monday, but now I just want to throw it in the street. Oh my god!
-
Should I feel bad about chuckling at the encircled World Trade Towers and the accompanying "Uh-oh!"???
-
Dear Santee,
Now, thanks to Forrest, when my package arrives on Tuesday, please just throw it into the river unopened.
That bastard.

Copy, paste, to my santee.
-
Should I feel bad about chuckling at the encircled World Trade Towers and the accompanying "Uh-oh!"???
Nope.
Also, too, let this be a warning to all you slow coaches: next year, get your gifts out early so that you're less likely to be trumped by selfish bastards like Forrest. Oh, their gifts will still outshine yours, but only in retrospect. I'm feeling pretty damn smug right now, knowing that mine at least was delivered days ago.
-
Wow, eff you Forrest. Tom, lock the thread, it's over.
-
mine's better.
-
(http://i42.tinypic.com/2yuiskn.jpg)?
-
Got most of my shopping done for grant from burbank.
(whoops, sorry. Wrong WFMU secret santa circle.)
-
Should I feel bad about chuckling at the encircled World Trade Towers and the accompanying "Uh-oh!"???
I read this recently at Spiked magazine. New to me at least.
Knock knock.
-Who's there?
9/11.
-9/11 who?
YOU SAID YOU'D NEVER FORGET.
-

This also works as a pickup line.

The first girl I meet who isn't offended by this immediately, I am going to marry her.

i got a call at work saying my box was returned to me, "Undeliverable as Addressed" or some such noise. when i get home i'll have to see what happened and send it overnite tomorrow morning. everything that could have gone wrong with my gifts, has.
but i say, chin up!
and...im crossing my fingers that when my santee gets their gifts, they will outshine Forrest's. maybe?

I'm under about another half foot of snow this morning, with more on its way. I'd normally never dare to use this as any kind of excuse, but it's a widely known fact that Seattle doesn't know what to do when there is even an inch of snow, let alone 12.
So considering I got no mail delivery or pickup on Saturday, I'm kinda thinking today won't be any better. My Santee apparently has really shitty luck, given that they pulled me this year, arg. :(
-
On the plus side, your front yard looks magical and Christmassy.
-
Mine is sent. It is nothing compared to other gifts, I'm sure. But I tried my best...
-
somehow i knew, in my heart of hearts, that dfk was my secret santa. thanks, buddy. :'(
and on the box it came in...

thanks, dave!!!!! youre the best.

I forgot about Joe Bob Briggs.
-
Dear Iam,
You probably noticed it's all of my music from A to, uhhhhhh, B. I am a little ashamed to say that I had intended to send you the entire contents of my hard drive music collection, but I just ran out of time. So you are about 75 CDs short.
Did I remember to put the Sedaris book in? Did you already have it? I am sorry that none of it was signed by Patton Oswalt, Ted Leo, or Ben Gibbard, but I am assuming the writing on the huge facsimile of my Friends of Tom card is from The Kid himself.
Happy Holidays to you and all FsOT everywhere!

no, this is fantastic: the CDs are awesome, and i would have taken 75 more. i dont have the sedaris book, but ive owned it many times before. it always manages to get lost and because ive owned it so many times, i can never bring myself to spend the money on another one.
the whole package was great. thanks again, dkf.
PS and the algebra on the box=brilliant.
-
just got mine! all the way from Sweden! thanks so much Martin!
a cool John Hodgeman chart of world knowledge
a funky James Brown Christmas cd
a dvd of a film called Crime Wave
an awesome card game called Spank The Monkey, which i'm going to force my family to play tomorrow night
and a framed picture of my true love, WFMU
I'll post pictures of the loot later
thank you again Martin!!
-
Perfect, just in time! Enjoy!

I am home alone for the next couple of days, so I went ahead and opened mine, from Emily (I think there's only one, but if not, it's Emily A.) I got (these are facsimiles as I don't own a camera):
I got the Peanut Butter ones, and afk and efk sucked up all the rest like Harry Knowles at an open nachos bar
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee183/gaughin/drinking-bird.jpg)
How we pass time down south while we're waiting for the cable to be run to get us those two network signals
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee183/gaughin/Wallace.jpg)
Since I know that Emily's not stalking me, this turns out to be the greatest coincidence ever. I had been carrying this very book around in my car, the public library's version, and I never found the time to read it, and had renewed it the maximum number of times, which meant that I couldn't even reserve it again for 3 months. I grudgingly turned it in a week ago Monday; now it arrives in a package to fill my Christmastime with infinite warmth. I have read 100 pages already, it's a geek's dream! Thank you, Emily.
To all FOTs, past, present, and future; I hope every day in the coming year is as good as the holidays are supposed to be.
Your pal,
dfk
-
holy god i am not good at this. Next year I will apply the lessons i learned this year to get really awesome gifts catered toward an FoT. If my SS this year wants more I am totally willing to add another gift or two.
-
I just got mine: a pickled cat fetus.
i'll post pics in a minute.
-
Awww Dave! I'm so happy to hear that story about the book :-) Makes me so happy - such a nice Christmas story. Glad you like it! The bird relates to the book because it will drink for infinity (or as long as the conditions are appropriate)
Happy Christmas!

John K - Perfect! Thanks! Nothing like opening a package and seeing Tom's giant sunglasses staring back at you... And from the front of the Road House no less. And the 7SD DVD - Awesome. Donated to the Kid last year, but the budget wouldn't allow for another show. 7SD would've been second on my list.
Snogrog - Hey, I'm the other Knox-FOT. Hope you like the gifts!
Dave from Knoxville - Greetings from the West Side! Sorry I didn't give you a shout earlier. I'm awful at message boards. As my 11 post count can attest to. Gotta say our fair city couldn't ask for better representation. You're good people. And how did I miss the David Byrne show? Awful.
-
What condiments will you serve it with, Andy?
-
Me too. It bums me out. But when you get this gift, Santee, I think you will love it.
It's another crappy day already, I think I've got another 2 inches since 4am. Yay.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008554976_roads24m.html Reading this a few minutes ago made my hate-filled heart happy though. Good job Seattle, good job.

holy god i am not good at this.
i hear you on that. i brought my gift to the post office yesterday to overnite and had to leave because my lunch was over before i got to the front of the line. im overniting it today. itll be expensive but i believe my santee is deserving.
on a happier note, im more anxious for my SS to receive the finale thats scheduled to be shipped to them on december 30th. this will be the piece that i believe is worth the wait.
-
Merry Christmas everrrryone! I would've taken part in this, but I've just noticed it! I think I have a habit of not taking any notice of stickies, defeating their purpose. Anyways, appy olidays. You're all lovely.

HOLY SMOKES -
two wicked awesome wind up toys, a fantastic tie with a donkey on it, and 6 cds in a fabulous homemade case with apparently nosferatu(?) on it! i have listened to the french new wave disc and love love love it. I am going to borrow a digital camera so I can post pictures of how awesome everything was - so thoughtful and great it brought tears to my eyes!
Thank you SO much Courtney.
-Best Show For Life!,

Yeah that's a Nosferatu print - the red ink I used for the prints smears like a bitch, so sorry 'bout that.
I got my present yesterday from someone in Brooklyn (they didn't include their name!):

Great work! I hope that's a didgeridoo and not some kind of bong..
Actually, it's supposed to be a straw, you know, for... I'm awful at snowmanning obviously.
As for Secret Santa business, I opened my box up from AM Thomas a little bit ago, and it's a bunch of super great stuff, including warm mittens my cat wants to eat, and the autographed pic of Tom from the 2006 marathon framed (which I didn't have, but now do, and love a lot already).
I'll get pics in the morning, but I just wanted to say thanks for a bunch of awesome stuff, and you're a way better Secret Santa than me! :)

PHOTOGRAPHY!

Just in time for Boxing Day I have received a wonderful package. I'm so glad I got Beth as a Secret Santa and not one of you other dopes!
Old-timey books (19-teens era copies of Treasure Island and The Republic.)
And a fake old-timey book: Curious Pleasures by Erasmus St. Jude Croom. This latter book is rather filthy so I am going to have to run it by Father Bill to see if I can be allowed to keep it. If not, expect a visit from the postal inspectors. Shame on you, Beth.
Not to mention a doodle, on whose reverse side is a lovely note, a flower, and TWINE!
Really, Beth, thank you. Those books are just the kind of thing I'm into.
-
Package safely received today, erika. And thank you so much! As a glutton with an aversion to stuff, I love food presents the most. These are perfect.
I don't have a digital camera, so a list will have to suffice:
1. a tin containing two kinds of homemade cookies (what are they, erika? I detect almond flavoring, and they're very short, but beyond that I can't say)
2. a package of "Maryland Mix" mixed nuts
3. a jar of Mellow Mango Chutney
4. a jar of orange marmalade (I love marmalade)
5. a jar of pumpkin butter
6. a jar of Triple Crown Preserves (strawberries, raspberries, cherries)
The last four are from a place called Weber's Farm, and they all are made with a minimum of extras (only the chutney has any preservatives in it), just the kind of thing I like to get at my sister's little store.
Also included was a card featuring a painting of a cat who looks very much like one of mine. I also welcome all the tissue paper--my supply of wrapping paper is small--and the chance to read the funnies, which I haven't looked at for years.
Thank you, thank you, erika. It is a lovely present, and I will enjoy it to the last bite. And happy New Year to you, too!
-
Oh yay! Sorry it was a little late - consider it a Secret Chanukah Harry present ;)
Those cookies (I hope they weren't too stale) are a simple butter cookie made with brown and white sugar and I filled some of them with cherry, blackberry, mixed berry and apricot preserves.
Here's the ingredients, baked at 375 for 9-11 minutes:
1.5 sticks unsalted butter
2 egg yolks
1 3/4 cups flour
1/4 cups white sugar, 1/4 cups brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp almond extract
Weber's Farm was always where we went to get pumpkins as a kid and I'm addicted to that "Triple Crown" preserves I included. It's a nice small farm in what is now the suburbs with a year-long farm store. They celebrated their 100th year anniversary this year and I'm hoping they'll be open for another 100 so I always try to shop there. You can even get your turkeys there at Thanksgiving. Great place.
I'm so glad you liked it. It was fun to put together!!
-
Well, I was right about the short and the almond parts. And don't worry: though they are a teensy bit stale, I'll just freshen them up in the oven.

I loved Catching the Big Fish; that was the greatest coffee break ever.
No, but seriously, I did love it. I read it three times.

Forgive my late appreciation! I was so happy to see that I got Kim Kelly as my Secret Santa because she's:
1) got good taste in comic books
2) smart & nice
3) ludicrously wealthy
Thanks so much, Laurie! You sent me two perfect gifts - the things you don't even really know you want until you see them. Dave Gibbons' "Watching the Watchmen"
and the animated Justice League movie, "The New Frontier."
A friend had just been talking up the Watchmen book to me, and it's about as good as he'd said. A beautiful book. Even my non-comics-reading mother-in-law was impressed by it. I haven't watched "The New Frontier" yet, but am really looking forward to it.
My wife was worried that my Secret Santa would show her up, and it was very close! Kim Kelly is my friend.
-
Nice haul! That New Frontier movie was surprisingly good - there're even some curses!
-
Okay, so I'm worried that my gift isn't going to get to my santee for another few days - I sent it out on i think the 17th or the 16th (i got the flu and there were some complications with the thing and blah blah blah) - and I feel really really really bad.
So if you haven't got your package yet, it might be because i am your secret santa and also a doofus.
-
Nice haul! That New Frontier movie was surprisingly good - there're even some curses!
The book is even better! Highly recommended.
-
Thanks again, Ben. You rule.
Not pictured is an awesome cowboy Christmas tin full of delicious homemade cookies.
Sorry these pics are so gigantic. But it's totally worth it for the detail on the last one...

I think I WIN!
Thanks to Andy -- after a long and weird holiday trip that included a dead cat and a buck knife (separately) I returned to find my Secret Santa.
First, a fantastic box.
Second, wrapped in a local paper with important news about a classy establishment called "Tangerine Apparel" which is conveniently located next to "Freddy's Frozen Custard" and is currently "redefining pretty".
FINALLY, an original ANDY ARTWORK! This skull cat captures the essence of my devilish beasties. THANKS ANDY!

Thanks Geeoff - I bought those stickers cause Neil Hamburger told me too - they are meant for random acts of vandalism. Sorry it all arrived after x-mas.
-
Sorry it all arrived after x-mas.
I believe it was either famed Russian Ober-Procurator of the Holy Synod Konstantin Pobedonostsev or Vanessa Williams who advised that it is best to "save the best for last."
-
...it is best to "save the best for last."
this reminds me- andy, your 2nd package arrived in fort worth, tx early this morning. im crossing my fingers it gets to you by the end of the day. if not, its got to be guaranteed for tomorrow.
-
I finally sent mine today. How long do you think good cheer will carry you for, Joe?
-
So - unless I missed it, of course - it's never been revealed who sent me my Def Leppard license plate frame thingy etc al...
Step up, son!
Thanks!
-
Andy, as of 730am this morning, your 2nd package was on a fedex truck in OKC for delivery.
-
Step up, son!
Oh, that was me. Hope you liked/weren't offended by it.
-
I love the gifts!
I just wanted to know who sent it. I really am going to put the license plate frame on my car. It's rad.
Thanks!

A message from former boarder/current FOT Susannah to her Secret Santa:
Thanks so much to my Secret Santa, who (as far as I can tell) chose
not to reveal him/herself! I've been wanting to read "The Gift" for a
while, and loved the recent New Yorker profile on Lewis Hyde. Happy
New Year!
Susannah xo
-
holy shit. I'm going to wait to reveal what I got from my secret santa until I have time to do it justice, but I think I can safely say that I'm the lucky winner this year. iamBaron went WAY above and beyond. ridiculously above and beyond.
Thank you so much.
-
So wait, you're the one who actually got some trucknutz is what you're saying?
<-- Jealous.
-
I got a gift today from the only other person who I know will be at the FOT Seattle meet-up aside from Trembling Eagle, Erechoveraker! You sir are the tops. This bounty of Best Show related goodness includes: a copy of Al Goldstein's I, Goldstein, a Ghostface mix CD as inspired by TBSOWFMU and a WFMU pledge shirt!
Now I'm wearing the shirt, while listening to the CD and reading the book. BEST SHOW HOLIDAY TRIFECTA! Thank you Erech!
-
Aw gee, glad you liked it. That sucks you only got it today though, it should have been there on Monday...
Though I'm still waiting on UPS to deliver something since the 18th, pre-snow madness. Yay Seattle storms!
FOTMAS!

I am reading the book that was included in my Secret Santa stash, David Foster Wallace's Everything and More. Given what we now know about Mr Foster, this passage makes me sad.
"G. F. L. P. Cantor is the most important mathematician of the nineteenth century and a figure of great complexity and pathos. He was in and out of mental hospitals for much of his later adulthood and died in a sanitarium in Halle in 1918. K. Godel, the most important mathematician of the 20th century, also died as the result of mental illness. L. Boltzmann, the most important physicist of the 19th century, committed suicide. And so on. Historians and pop scholars tend to spend a lot of time on Cantor's psychiatric problems and on whether and how they were connected to his work on the mathematics of infinity."
-
Blotzman was going to be the answer to a premonitory Match wits with Mike idea I was going to propose when I finally had it all figured out.
RE: INFINITY AND INSANITY I'm still hung up on imaginary numbers (since sophomore year in high school}. Square root of -1.
We exist in a world of great complexity and it appears to be mathematically based just like this machine I using to communicate. Like something a robot would create.
Did you ever wonder why prodigies exist in math and music but not poetry?
-

This has been killing me.

Me too. It bums me out. But when you get this gift, Santee, I think you will love it.
No problem, RegJoe. Thanks for all the great swag, including the original Truck Nutz art! My wife is totally alarmed by it, so I think I'm going to stash it and use it as an prize of some kind for the next play I work on (which might actually be in Seattle). Like, every week someone else in the cast gets the Truck Nutz award for some reason. Last summer at the O'Neill I turned Truck Nutz into a fun meme/joke that I beat to death, and I'm happy to be able to keep it up.
Nat X will enjoy the company of my other action figures. Hopefully he will try to raise the consciousness of my only other African-American action figure, which is the Job I bought from a Christian toy company.
I'm not legally allowed to own cock rings, so I snuck them into the pharmacy section at the Brooklyn Target, where I'm sure they'll confuse and amuse the hapless employees.
The best prize, however, is the illustrated letter. You sure can drawl good Joe!1!!
-
I got a hardback book of my favorite thread from the Forum: "Pictures You Took"
It's a 32 page books of pictures culled from that thread and quotes from the Best Show and the Forum. I've been meaning to take pics for posting, but life has gotten a little hectic.

it is. I'll post pics soon, I promise.

I'm glad the homemade truck nutz made it through, Grote! I'm sorry I alarmed your wife, but I HAD to do it. Sometimes you get what you axe for. Its kind of hilarious to think that the employees of the Brooklyn Target will forever be perplexed by the double-re-gifted cock rings that nobody in the world wants. Good work!
-
double-re-gifted cock rings
This phrase is so wrong.
But if it's the Target at Atlantic, then it is right at home and no one will notice it.

whoa!! i havent checked my email in almost a week and just found out you LOVED my gift. im blushing. im really glad you liked it. seriously. im humbled.
i'll make life easy for you and post a link to the book: http://www.blurb.com/books/511545

You're assuming there will be a show next year. How many "you don't know how close this is to being over" messages have we received? I am listening to each show as if it is the last.

andy, im interested in seeing what the book looks like in reality since the only copy ive ever seen is what it looks like on a computer screen- definitely not the same.
-
we've been hearing that the show was going to end for 8 years, rookies.

yeah, but Tom's latest twitter update about Q3 2009 not coming soon enough troubles me...

This phrase is so wrong.
But if it's the Target at Atlantic, then it is right at home and no one will notice it.
I know it's dangerously close to pranking the working man, but (1) that Target is a hellhole, and (2) when I was an employee at K-Mart in 1988, I would have been delighted to find some unplaceable cock rings.
-

At the cardboard factory, that's when they ship out all the pending long-term orders and can credit the books.

Wow, that book is pretty super-amazing.
Some really cool gifts all around this year guys, way to make me feel like a dummy! :)
-
Mine went out today!! Sorry about the delay Santee, it wasn't my fault I swear!!!!
-
im really proud you guys like Andy's book. i was anxious about it. seriously, im humbled.
and if you havent had a chance to see it, there is a special thanks to Tom, Omar/Recidivism.org, and the FOT on the board. seriously, you guys made the book*; i merely put it in a medium.
*all photos in the book were credited with the corresponding FOT handle. (for the record, Martin took the cake.)

I suspect your avatar is indicative of what really happened.
-
I also got a great gift from Snogrog today (although it arrived before christmas, not getting it till today is on me). I am now all set for NY and the mr brooks movie night. Can't wait. Snogrog, check your uni email.
-
Thank you Spoony for the very cool pinhole camera. I look forward to contributing something artsy (or at least fartsy) to the next Pictures You Took book. I'll feel like a regular William Igglesstein! Nice job!

on an unrelated note, i watched a William Eggleston doc last nite.

I really can't wait to see them. I imagine there will be some trial and error, but sometimes you have to BLEED FOR IT.* I hope you could read my palsy-handwriting.
By the way, Emma was no slouching in the Secret Santa department AT ALL. It was funny, sweet, and tied into Saul Rubineck.

Fuck you, Santa.

Fuck you, Santa.
Uh oh!
-
Fuck you, Santa.
How dare you, Martin's Santa!
-
anyone else that didn't get something? who wants to pitch in to get Martin some pickled herring?
-
i was crossing my fingers that i would get Martin- i got Andy instead. he was a real snore to shop for and probably ungrateful.*
Martin, if you give a shit, send me your address. regardless of presents, everyone likes getting personal mail.
note: im only kidding, everyone!
-
I've been promised it's on its way.
It has been suggested that my present was "a life lesson: learning to cope with dissapointment, and being let down by others". I can see that.
-
I am happy to report that my gift has now arrived. I am now going through a book of deliciously offensive cartoons and a USB that is so chock full of goodies that I don't know where to begin. My Secret Santa had circumstances that were beyond his control and completely understandable, and I salute him for following through during difficult times.
Thank you very much, Bryan! I really appreciate everything!
As for Martin, this seems like a cosmic injustice. I will be intersted to see how things play out.
-
Forrest, I'm glad you're enjoying. I'm a little surprised that it took a full month to get to you (NYC is only a 10-hour drive from here), but whattaya gonna do?
-
I heard julie's sending martin topless pics for his secret santa gift.
-
no, julie already sent me that for new year's.
