Trailer for the new Demetri Martin show on Comedy Central. It's pretty disappointing if you ask me. The copy shop joke is a joke from the State. The two guys pulling into the same parking spot is the set-up from a pretty classic Seinfeld episode. It looks like it goes in a different direction, but it still seems weird to use that as a set-up when all you need is two non-fighting guys getting into a fight-type situation, which can happen anywhere.
Anyway, the show looks disappointing. Demetri Martin is really funny even though his schtick gets tiresome. Especially as it gets more twee, which is the direction the show seems to be going in.

Looks like Demetri is an FOT. Good for him.

Demetri Martin doesn't make me laugh at all, though he seems like a nice enough fellow.
I'll be tuning in for H. Jon Benjamin, who can't not make me laugh, no matter how mediocre the show he's appearing on.

Looks like Demetri is an FOT ripping off Tom. Good for Let's get him.
I don't really mean that, but it's fun to be unnecessarily defensive about this kind of thing.

The best thing about Martin is that he grew up in Toms River! Which means nothing to any of you.
Not sure about the comedy.
-
Isn't Tom's River the place in Jersey with the Little League champs a while back? I'm sad/confused that I know this.
-
Tom's River is also the town next to the town I'm from. It's like *I'm* getting my own show.

About as one-note as one-note humor can be.

''That's a nice body, You work out? I can tell.''

For me, Jon Benjamin doesn't have to have material that's remotely funny. Him just reading a grocery list would make me crack up.

His whole cutesy art-student shtick drives me insane. There are some funny people involved in the show though.

One time I happened to be walking behind Demetri Martin on Hudson St. when Will Arnett rode up on a bicycle, popped a wheelie, and then opened his mouth so that Demetri Martin could feed him a french fry. They were both wearing sunglasses. Cool!
Also, Tom's River is weirdosville.
-
Demetri Martin isn't my favorite, but I think he's a good joke writer and if you see him do an extended set, strangely you begin to his (or his onstage persona's) worldview. Which is really difficult for a one-liner comic.

HAHA! I was thinking the same thing.

My only question: how did Will Arnett ask? In my head, all I can think of is him with his deep voice saying something like "Feed me some fry, mophead".

Please 'splain. (I'm from Brick which in my opinion outweirds Toms River.)

I am not kidding when I say that I received a PR spam e-mail at my work address about this show from Comedy Central and the guy who sent it was named Steve Albani. I like how this makes it seem like it's being publicized by a fake Steve Albini.

yeah, Brick is a freak machine.

I beg youse guys for your insights into my native land.
My theory is that since the only "culture" anywhere nearby is the Point Pleasant and Seaside boardwalks, and because the entire economy is sustained by people selling slices of pizza and chiropractic services to each other, kids there have to turn inward, or go into the woods or swamps, to stay sane. And they fail.
Also, guido central.

Sorry everyone, to go back to the main point here..
But I feel like Mr. Martin knows the fight setup is a Seinfeld gag. I think he's paying homage to a show that he grew up with. I don;t think it's something to hold against the guy.
I did find the copy shop joke lame. I agree there.

Somebody help me with this math problem...
Zach Galifianakis + Eugene Mirman - (funny) x Zach Braff = ?

This guy?

Have you guys been watching this show? I'm not too impressed, though it's always nice to see our old pal Jon Benjamin on the gold and silver screen.
-
Same here, Samir. I'm not onboard anymore.
-
I cannot look at Demetri Martin without thinking that his whole life was written and directed by Wes Anderson.
-
I agree with Samir and Jon.
I also want to add that I think Demetri's problem is relying too heavily on style, over crafting decent jokes. It feels like a Chappelles Show with all the goodness scraped out of it.
-
Saw it last night for the first time and liked it better than I thought I would. I think the presence of Jon Benjamin helps quite a bit. But I don't know how many times I'd tune in in the future; a little Demetri Martin goes a long way for me.

I haven't seen it, but I've inheirited a dislike for Demetri Martin ever since the time he invited my friend Danielle to hang out with him a few years ago after one of the Twinkle (I think?) shows, and ended up being really flakey and lame.
