I've been working my way forward in the archives and was wondering what episodes people are listening to.
I am downloading Road House in preparation to watch the one from July 20, 2004: Tom Does A One Man Version Of The Entire Movie Road House! Also, An Unfair Record Review Of The New Wilco Album.
How about you which was the last archive you listened to? Alternate question what is one of your favorites?
-
Right I'm listening to Nov. 21st, 2006
-
I just got to 2002 working my way up from the beginning. Just heard the debut of PBR. And Michael Jackson going Punk. And Hasu (sp?) Kid stuff. Freaking gold I tells ya! Dec 2001 and Jan 2002 are REALLY good.
-
and was wondering what episodes people are listening to....
I must say, Alvaro, that since you mentioned the debut of Spike on the 02/03/04 episode, I went there, and I was howling during the lovely toblerone stuff, but disturbed by Spike's initial calls. It was painfully ironic when Tom at one point was like "This guy is my favourite caller now, honestly, I think he's my favourite caller..."
When it comes to the archives, I was being fairly methodical about a year ago, but later on I started to get a lot more sporadic, jumping around amongst the hot streaks, and i think it's served me fairly well.
-
the one where Marky Ramone reads his erotic literature is one of my faves. It's in the description.
-
I just listened to Tom's on air kidney stone episode. Despite all the music, it's still a towering win.
-
The XFL spectacular (2/27/01).
-
The XFL spectacular (2/27/01).
Seconded.
"And I was... violated with the butt end of my Tommy Gun."
I'm don't know about Sam Seder's other work, but Gerald Perlmutter was freaking hilarious.
-
i started at the bottom, and I'm working my way towards the top. I listen to the current show when it goes up, of course, but I'm about halfway there, around May of '05. My wife is a good sport.
-
Update: Watched Road House with the Tomentary and it was great. Highly recommended.
-
Not to get off topic but does anyone know what episode introduces the Mickey Dolenz rivalry?

Tom first told the story of getting snubbed by Dolenz at the 2:21 mark of the 3/25/06 program.
-
Personal Faves...
1) Jimmy Crespo
2) Deltoid Airlines
3) Rambocky
These are ones I play for people to wet their beak, five minutes before they become fans for life...
-

Thanks much Omar!

Seconded. "This stuff's got no heart! It's Wilco!"

One of the best parts by far.

Finally bit the bullet and decided to work my way forward, after skipping around for a while. Listening to Yanks v. Mets from 2000 (which is bringing back some ugly memories from that time).
Quick question: This is the earliest one available on the archives, but it's not the first Best Show, right? Because Hot Rockin Ronnie makes an appearance, as does PBR. Just curious, because I'm a weird completist about stuff I dig (and The Best Show is no exception).
-
My three biggest requests about the archive are:
1. Do the pre-archive shows exist in any format? Surely our resident tech FOTs could put together MP3s from wax cylinders or whatever.
The pre-archive shows contain at LEAST one Hot Rockin' Ronny call and one Todd Phillips call.
2. Can we put up the un-archived shows minus the Stereolaffs material? This seems like the type of thing that one of the audio program experts could do in an hour or two.
3. Could we somehow make available the unedited versions of the early Stereolaffs stuff? Make people prove they've bought the CDs in order to get them, whatever. One of the early shows has some "lost material" from the Gorch call, and it's hilarious.
The issue, I think, is that only Tom has this stuff, and he's clearly got a lot to do with focusing on what's going on now and the show at present.

This is a great summary of my feelings buffcoat.

I second (or third) all of that. And concur that I'd rather not bug Tom about any of this stuff; just hoping that some wise FOT out there can enlighten us.

If any of buffcoat's suggestions are a possibility, I hereby volunteer my services to assist with the converting of said shows into a useful digital format.
-
yeah, i do some audio editing too. if needed, i can help.
-
I'm currently listening to August 24th, 2004 now. There's an interview with Bernie Cullin the author of some book about being lazy and Tom is doing a morning zoo type voice. He keeps doing this ridiculous fake laugh and getting racist emails. Good stuff.
-
This thread reminds me of every single patchouli-reeking, meandering, sub-literate Grateful Dead taper forum in the known universe and I don't like it.
I love it!
-
Just been listening to Yankees Vs Mets myself, and the election 2000 show. Who are the guys in the studio on Y vs M? Are all those early shows 'just' comedy, with few/no callers or music? I'm surprised by the quality of these shows, given Tom's occasional disdain for them on air, and its a very daring format.

As far as I can remember:
Mets fan is Jon Benjamin
Yankees fan is Matt Walsh

Yes. PBR and Hot Rockin' Ronny also call.
-
Petey's birthday party with Wurster's Petey from the future.
There's also an episode with Jon Benjamin using a voice modulator and yelling at Petey.
Hoopstridomis with Benjamin as the prophet who predicts NBA games.
More recently, the Bernie Toupin call is part of a great show.

I love it!
I've never been so embarrassed and humiliated.
And yet, I must continue:
I'm listening to September 14, 2004's episode where he GOMPs a Rock Critic. It's a good episode. The one before it was the Medical Marijuana first jam. Which was great too.

I pulled up that episode in an attempt to find that rock critic call and fast-forwarded right to the point where I heard Tom finish a call with Laurie. I had no idea she was calling way back then.
-
I just listened to March 6, 2001: Hot Rockin' Ronny Versus Tom, And Weatherman Cliff Petterson Explains "The Storm of the Century."
Really funny!
-
I love the April 22, 2008 edition of The Best Show. Scharpling + Wurster + Tompkins = luscious liquid gold. Like A great book, or A fine wine that only gets better with age. I listen to this at least once A week.
Also, March 1, 2005. Mike Sajak, total genius! Cheers
-
I love the April 22, 2008 edition of The Best Show.... I listen to this at least once A week.
Yes! This episode was impeccable. I'd say I might listen to how Paul became PBP biweekly. It's phenominal.
I also recently listened to the "Best Show Morning Zoo" on the December 5th, 2006 installment, and I must say that I was in shock..... having listened to The Millionaire's call from the week before, this "morning zoo" version of the call was frightening. It is also time-appropriate, because if TBSOWFMU was TBS"NOT on WFMU", the Wurster calls we know and love would become some horrible disfiguration of what they are now, all thanks to corporate-douche-baggery. It served as a warning for me, and that's (part of) why I pledged.

Working my way forward through the archives and I just listened to this one, the "George Benson's White Son" call, and the "Flying the Erotic Skies" call. Love Jon Benjamin. Wish he'd call in again for ol' time's sake.
Question: Does the first Gorch appearance predate the first archived show? Because I was listening to the first marathon shows in 2001, and they play a Gorch clip.
-
I wonder if there's a site that could help answer that.
-
Buffcoat's gonna quit the internet and take his highly useful blog (http://buffcoat.blogspot.com/) with him if youse guys keep ignoring it.
-
I can't remember if its an official CD or something I got from the old vault, but I can't remember which call is the original president baseball call. I've checked buffcoat's site.
-
I wonder if there's a site that could help answer that.
Sorry. I will consult the site first in the future before bothering the forum with such trifles.

But I hope the site is helpful!

You need Omar to go back in time and summarize all the early shows.
I do know that there was actually a reference to "President Football" in one of the very early calls (PBR? HRR?) that I heard last month on my iPod. I should have written it down - I knew it would come in handy.
-
You need Omar to go back in time and summarize all the early shows.
I was also thinking about this recently. But, I thought of Omar's status as scrivener/monk reserved him to remain in his line of work, beautifully crafting the large lump of clay that is the Best Show. I can imagine an apprentice scrivener attempting to don the robes working alongside Omar, renvisioning and recapitulating through typeface the shows past...potentially starting from Omar's beginnings and moving backward.
All I'm saying is that the responsibility of recapping all the unrecapped shows doesn't have to placed solely on Omar's shoulders. But then we run into a problem: who can do what Omar does as good as Omar does?
-

I love your site! Thanks to all the old school FOT's, for educating all us newer FOT slobs. Speaking for myself, the slob part anyway. You've all been very cool. Cheers!

I can imagine a late-period Omar who takes on an apprentice, shows him how it's done, and then signs his name to the apprentice's work.

This is a very likely scenario. I need to groom my H-Man!
Scrivening note: a combined recap of the two marathon shows is in progress, an epic slated for publication in early 2010.

Okay, now that I have consulted your most helpful site, and seen that the first Gorch call show is not available in the archives, is there any place where the whole show is available? I bought the album with The Gorch on it, but I'd love to hear the unexpurgated version.
-
There's a thread about this also going on.
Unfortunately, right now, the uncut versions of the old calls (and the entire shows they came from) are the single most important missing pieces of the Newbridgiverse.

Postal Slap fight off of the S&W cd Art of the Slap. It's in response to Cheyney throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game. Here's a link to the album: http://www.stereolaffs.com/slap.php They talk about it not even a minute after the audio sample clip (http://www.stereolaffs.com/audio/slap/postalsample.mp3) cuts off.
The album is worth the price for the Andy from Lake Newbridge call alone.
Hope that was what you were looking for.
-
I think PBR might mention President Baseball during the Yankees vs. Mets call (the first show in the archives), but I'm not sure.

I listened to that one not too long ago, and I believe you're right.
-
Postal Slap fight off of the S&W cd Art of the Slap. ....The album is worth the price for the Andy from Lake Newbridge call alone.
I love that call. My brother bought the CD and showed me the Andy from Lake Newbridge call telling me at the start that a carp was on the phone. It made the call more enjoyable when you knew from the beginning, and just as good on the 4th or 5th listen as well.
-
I just listened to the Listener Appreciation show from early 2001. Ho. Lee. Shit.
I can't believe how much abuse Tom took on this show. The stuff with Todd and Claude Billups is hysterical, but my god, people seriously hated him and the show back then. They seemed to think he was pulling some kind of "fraud" with the Wurster calls, and they were really angry about it. It was seriously upsetting to hear.
-
...It was seriously upsetting hilarious to hear.
...for me anyway.
-
working my way through in order; i just started the roadhouse show.
a few eps before that, though, i heard a call from .... a 14-year-old H-Man? i can't remember the date or time; it was maybe 6/22/04.
anyhow. weird?
-
I think my favourite archive show so far is the first movie quotes one (June 28, 2005). Tom's suggestion to have a buzzer for the bad AFI quotes is just hilarious. I also checked out several movies after listening to this (Rock And Roll High School, for one), as well as re-evaluating some other classics.
-
I'm listening to 04/11/09. It's the first show after Bush won the reelection. It's a Patriot Zone episode hosted by Tom Sharp. Jason from England is in the studio also. Great episode.
-
That "04/11/09" date confused me so hard, for so long. I feel dumb now...
I'm on the episode with Neil Pollack, December 5, 2000.
I'm having a lot of fun hearing callers think they're really smart and claiming that the Wurster callers are pulling Tom's leg in these early shows. As if they got it and he didn't, and they were helping him out.
-
7/15/03 - Dr. Udo Erasmus is the guest. The Dr. is legit and Tom seems genuinely interested in what he has to say, but then PBR and Cpt. Jack call in and hilarity ensues.
-

PBR asking Dr. Erasmus whether it's OK to smoke is great. You can hear Tom totally losing it in the background.
-
Dec 23/08 is a a huge W
Tom's bit on Jamie Kennedy's Son of the Mask had me in stitches
-
I know this is cliche by now and old wet newspaper but, the Shoppin For a Coffin show. Hands down.
I've turned on at least 3 friends to TBS that had no idea that talk radio was anything but Rush Limbaugh and hardwarestore ads.
-

Love that too. Especially Tom's "disguised voice" voice.
-
The XFL episode. Has to be a hall of famer, so funny.
-
i'm in august 2004. i think i just heard laurie from miami? (her name was laurie. she was from miami.)
also, 8/17/04, the living colour fan who doesn't want to hear about politics - he just wants to rock! real (i think) and very very funny.
-
January 20, 2009-Where Tom spends the better part of an hour going off on The Police and that Elvis Costello talk show.
-
03-06-2001 - HRR and a Drunken Weatherman. This is amazing stuff.
-
I just FINALLY listened to the Danielson Family Bachelor Party (Oct. 10, 2006) episode and it's terrific. The Pudge call (was this the first Pudge call?) had me cackling. Plus you get a handful of wurster calls.
Also, during the smash or trash segment with Dearest Lovely or whatever it was, was that you, Laurie from Miami, who called and said it was a smash and was the first person to mention sleater kinney?
-
7/31/2001 - Tom gets royally screwed over by Perry Farrell.
The last twenty minutes are brilliant - Tom in full-on furious mode, and great calls from Wurster, Earles, and Terre T.
To top it all off, the best Wursterism ever: Rich Hall Will Hit Y'All.
-
Listener Appreciation 2001
It's like the turning point between Tom being a little self-conscious and semi-ingratiating and then Tom being Tom as we know him and love him...
Three calls in a row:
guy complaining about a Wurster call being a hoax and eating on the phone - "Don't eat on the phone you pig!"
lady asks if Tom would ever do his show naked, but has radio on really loud, sounds like a tunnel - "AAAAAAAARGH I CAN'T TALK TO YOU EITHER!!! BRRNNNNNNNNGHGHGHG!"
guy asks if an earlier caller actually owns a tractor - "I don't know..."
straight into a song, with no comment.
Beautiful.
-
"Is Wayne Gretzky more or less talented than Orson Welles?"
-
Just listened to the last episode of 2004. Tom is auditioning a new Captain Jack actor because he "fired" the old actor who used to play him.
-
Listening to 2006.3.14 post-marathon show where Tom's reading this Salon.com article about the Abercrombie & Fitch CEO. It's a great rant. This should be considered for the Gems podcast.
-
That picture makes Goatse look like a Renoir.
-
...Tom's reading this Salon.com article about the Abercrombie & Fitch CEO. It's a great rant. This should be considered for the Gems podcast.
I sure hope so.... I don't see an archive of that.
-
November 19, 2002: Tom Calls Corey From The Corporate Rock Band Mother 13 To Even The Score, The Exciting Debut Of www.friendsoftom.com, Kevin Calls Up Yet Again, And The Premiere Of Tom's Alter Ego 'Doc Shock'.
Amazing episode, especially Doc Shock with the record of Shock Me turning on and off.
-
I am not going through all the episodes featuring Marky Ramone, in order.
There's one that has Marky call in twice, the second time so that he could judge a rap battle between Ted Leo and MC Steinberg.
Other judges include DJ Terre T, Tom "El Goodo" Scharpling, Timmy Von Trimble and Philly Boy Roy. As you can imagine, it's a solid gold listening experience.
Original air date: January 17th, 2006.
-
I don't mean this in a bad way, but going back as early as 2002 through 2004, I was really surprised how hilarious most of the shows were. I guess having come into the Best Show fold late I expected the earlier stuff to be more raw, but it's just as sharp.
-
I love this thread.
I've been listening to the music from October 16, 2007 on repeat for hours now. It's incredible.
-
I just listened to the January 17, 2006: MC Steinberg Battles Ted Leo. In preparation for my MC Steinberg diss track. Good episode. Leo has some serious flow.
-
I listened to the August 12, 2008 show this afternoon, and the H-Man's gomps near the end of the show may be among the best ever...
-

That's a best show classic. Wurster was amazing and TL's final track was classic. It doesn't get much better.
-
Slowly working my way forward through the archives. Right now, listening to 06/19/01 with Mr. Loophole.
I'm actually listening to each show twice; the second time I listen to it, I do a running log of bits, callers, music, etc. for handy reference later. Yes, I am that big of a dork.
-

Good for you. You should post this somewhere, I'm sure some of us would find some use for it.

Have definitely thought about doing that. Will try and clean it up and do so soon. I've done it for pretty much every available show from 2000 through June of 2001.
-
I think this is my favorite moment ever:
December 29, 2004
26:41 - 27:37
TOM SCREAMS!
-
Just got to the Teenage Girl show. I love how you can hear Tom regretting his decision more and more as the night goes on. Mike Show/Teenage Girl Show teamup would be amazing, but probably result in jailtime for anyone involved.
-
February 14, 2006. The show where Tom and Rick from Poster Children get into it. Good GOD. What a smug, sanctimonious prick that guy was.
-

Yeah, it's almost like it was somebody else pretending to be Rick from Poster Children.

Do they give out Oscars for radio show performances?
-
Tom's New Jersey Devil roll call from June 10 2003 is great - the Flames fans in my office were not happy with me playing that after they were kicked out of the play offs this week.
Trust me, it's hilarious even if you're not rubbing it in for people whose team is hitting the links...

Was that the guy who kept saying "pooh-pooh'd" and knocking the south?
What an asshole.

You're thinking Michael K from The Cynics. The Poster Children are a band with the worlds greatest actor playing the worlds biggest asshole on The Best Show.

Oh yeah, those guys. So the feud wasn't real?
-
Oh, the feud was real. Tom played around with it for awhile, fun was had. But then things got a little out of hand.
I still say she sounds like Cher.
-
@ buffcoat:
I'm listening to that show again and those guys make me want to cave my head in. They remind me of everyone I've ever met that's from a metropolitan area. The worst part was when they both did that laugh when Tom asked them if they celebrated Valentines day.
-
long ago i started a project to chop out the best bits from each episode of the Best Show to make CDs out of for road trips. I abandoned it quickly after I realized I just like listening to the shows in full.
So I have my entire audio collection on my computer (music, comedy, radio shows, podcasts) on random and a snippet from the first post-9/11 show played where Tom talked to a kid who wanted to start a pirate radio station so he could play slipknot on it. After the clip was over, it went to David Cross's bit from Shut Up You Fucking Baby about seeing a flamboyant roller-blader the day after 9/11.
My point is, it was neat
Oh, and then immediately after that was my own fat voice doing appearing in some raw audio for a lame home-made comedy bit from 4 years ago, gross. Way to ruin everything, ME

26th June 2001 - the guy from Ye Olde Burger Barn talking about the batter butler.
Tom is in disbelief that the guy would want to dip a burger in batter... where I live, battered burgers and sausages are quite a delicacy.

Not listening to anything in the Archive, but today's Best Show Gems podcast is great beyond words.

It's funny you should mention that because I was wondering the same thing. It sure sounds like it.

listened to 2 that stuck out recently. One where the subject was "who goes in your hate pit" from late 2007. dave from knoxville, who usually sounds like a pretty smart dude, calls up and says some jbjab about gary shandling having not done anything worthwhile since 1990. exsqueeze me? larry sanders ran until what, 1998? that's 8 years of AMAZING under shandling's belt post dave's cutoff. larry sanders is the predecessor for curb your enthusiasm, the office (hank kingsley is a prototype for david brent), arrested development, and 30 rock among others. dave also said he was disappointed in j-lo's lack of use of her talent? dave, what's the deal, man? out of sight? i guess she was good in that, but couldn't that role have been anyone else? honestly? the other episode i heard recently involved the discussion of nick cage's career-- which, sure; dude makes terrible movies. but most of them are simultaneously awful and amazing. face off? he says, "i take my face... off" in that stupid voice- god i love that stupid voice. and then con air, with that awful southern accent and he goes, "why didn't you just put down the bunneeh?" it's almost commendable how bad he is. like, you have to try really hard to achieve that level of stupid. the rock-- "i'm gonna take pleasure in guttin' you, boy." criterion released this one. Criterion Collection Presents The Rock. that is a real thing that exists. why? because nicholas cage is unparalleled in the field of acting. adaptation, sure. brilliant. but have you seen wicker man? it's even brillianter. mike said it best, he's his own genre and now i think he only takes movies in which the main character can see the future. nick cage is my favorite genre. plugs and all.

I say no. Vague similarities only.

I guess my hearing is going bad then. And at the ripe age of 25, no less.

Beautiful.
Grading finals. All alone up here in the office. Listening to this episode. WHAT THE FUCK.
I can't even believe this happened....can't believe it. That would make me snap, too.
Yesterday I listened to the first appearance of Stevie Blue. Wow. Just....wow.
WOW WOW WOW.
Working my way through this beast.

Listening to the Todd Palin show, the first episode I ever listened to and it still holds a special place in my heart. I don't think I was ever more confused and delighted than during that night.
