Title: Inappropriate Walk Up Music
Post by: scratchbomb on March 06, 2009, 02:36:41 PM
This is totally self-pimping of my own site, but I figured this might interest FOTs, as it is spiritually similar to the music-related topics Tom throws out from time to time.

I'm currently doing a series of daily posts on my site (Scratchbomb.com) wherein I list three songs that would be inappropriate as walk-up music for a major league batter.

These aren't necessarily bad songs per se (though that certainly helps). Just ones that you can't imagine a pro athlete choosing for their walk-up music.

Here's today's post:

http://scratchbomb.com/2009/03/inappropriate-walk-up-music-030609.html (http://scratchbomb.com/2009/03/inappropriate-walk-up-music-030609.html)

Peep at your leisure, and by all means contribute ideas here and in the comments.

Gary Glitter's song Rock & Roll Part 2 gets played all the time in major sports venues. And these folks are really committed to the idea that it's inappropriate as walk-up music, or anything else in connection with sporting events.

I hadn't seen that before, but I do find that song's continued use at all sporting events puzzling. I mean, ths guy is a convicted pedophile. And also, the song is supremely stupid.

Believe it or not, I have thought quite a bit about this subject, for many years!

I have always felt that "Dust In the Wind" would be incredibly unsettling to everyone involved. The diverting effect of sports temporarily wiped away...all in earshot reminded of the existential truths about life. Does this next pitch matter? Not really.  Ultimately, we will all die.

Exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for! Thank you, I will use this and give credit accordingly.

"Paradise by the Dashboard Light" jumped into mind for me. But now I think might work for hit leaders like Pete Rose or Josh Hamilton (I only know Reds/Former Reds).

I've always thought I'd have the entire Ring Cycle play each at bat if I made it to the bigs.

Mike Mussina used to refuse to throw his first pitch until the Yankee Stadium PA played all 10 Shostakovic symphonies.

I want "The loner" to play if I ever make it to the big time, or "the Cutter" and I would be nicknamed the cutter

Lionel Richie's Three Times a Lady would probably earn a few catcalls.

Love reading the posts, I'll throw out a few suggestions.

Xiu Xiu "Fabulous Muscles"
"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"
Rupert Holmes "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)"

I'm also hoping that some speedster adopts Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car".

I totally forgot that Xiu Xiu existed, and how fey and annoying that guy's voice is. Definitely gonna use that and the Pina Colada Song (because it gives me an excuse to use a clip of Joel and the Bots discussing the song on MST3K).

Jimmy Buffet's Margaritville might be inappropriately laid back as would be just about anything by Snoop Dogg, no?

Man, I'd love a subtly altered broadcast of a game with these songs edited in.

Problem with that being they almost never show the walk up or have enough of the field mic'd so that you can hear the music... save for a closer (ugh, no pun intended) like Mariano, who they always show running out to the mound along to Enter Sandman.

That said, I'd really like someone to hack the cart machine so that when he came out "the Entertainer" would play the way it does on an ice cream truck.

Any song by the troika of Steve Albini-led bands. "Jordan, Minnesota," "Cables," and "Prayer to God," in particular.

Gary Glitter isn't high art but last I checked there are a lot of musicians, artists, writers, etc. who did pretty bad things and I wouldn't want their work banned. I think I'd be upset if the only way I could hear Phil Spector's work was to dig into my own collection.
