Title: Fredericks Podcast
Post by: fonpr on July 25, 2010, 11:43:20 PM
Taking Tom's advice I did it.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

http://fredericksnprcast.podbean.com/

If you enjoy what you hear, I'd appreciate it if you'd the spread word .

It's a little edgier than what I'm used to, but I can't help but love it. I'm sure you could organize actual call-ins, what with your fot following. Maybe choose two or three guests and arrange a time slot beforehand? However, if anything gets in the way of pure, unadulterated Fredericks (and Fredericks alter-ego), cast it aside.
Also you should consider feeding that child more often.

Thanks Mr C and Auntie C.

I have committed myself to at least one show per month.

I have every intention of sticking to the schedule.  I took notes during Tom's critiques of podcasts - no crappy mics and no extended absences.

Your encouragement is very heartening.

Thanks again for you support.

You may want to try a different browser, Steve.  Safari didn't work for me at first.  Firefox worked like a charm.

If you still have trouble hearing it let me know and I'll put it up some other way.

I listened to this on the subway this morning. I think it's that audio frequency that all the kids are getting high with now, because it melted my brain.

Better than at least 85% of the other podcasts out there! And thank you for keeping it brief.

Consider the gauntlet THROWN DOWN, Paul F. Tompkins.

So THIS is what would happen if Radiolab was produced in New Port Richey?  ;)

I just started it, and yes, it's definitely different than the type of podcast I'm used to, but that's not a bad thing.  I like the comments on the NPR story; I wouldn't mind hearing more of that.

I give you a huge amount of credit for not starting your first podcast with "well it's my first podcast, i'm not exactly sure what to do here," etc.  You go right into the material.  I like that.

I appreciate your persistence, Stevie B.

To the rest of you guys: Thanks for the feedback!
I hope you you don't mind but I'll probably capture some of the comments from here and post them on the blog.
Hopefully they'll act as enticements for those who may wander over into my neck of the cyberspace.

Let me know if you a problem with me doing this.

Here's a blurb for you to use, Fredericks: "This man is dangerously disturbed and should be locked up."

Kind of like how on the first Velvet Underground album cover they put all the negative quotes, to give themselves that "outlaw" edge.  I think Norman Mailer ran some print ads for one of his novels using the same idea.

Do you think I should label it NSFW?

I too like Negativland a great deal.  So does Buffcoat, allegedly.

He himself made the allegation that's why I say "allegedly".

Fredericks,

I wouldn't call it NSFW. It was our local firewall authorities who decided your podcast (or, more specifically, podbean) was something they wanted to block.

Well, I'm off to watch some youTube videos now...

It is, and I don't know why precisely, but I think it has to do with the second and sometimes third voice repeating what's on top of the mix, and those repetitions being processed in different ways, echoey, reverbed, etc.

It's a good association from me. I love that song.

To me, it calls to mind that call a couple years back when Tom put Fredericks on some kind of recursive echoing loop and an awestruck Fredericks could only stammer out "This is weird radio!!" into a heartlessly reverberant void.

... and that show featured this clip from "Delocated":

http://video.adultswim.com/delocated/napping-sounds-with-jon.html (http://video.adultswim.com/delocated/napping-sounds-with-jon.html)

It occurred to me that Jon's spooky call-and-response voice multitracking is sorta similar to the Fredericks Mind Thing. Tom asserted that FONPRs podcast is without precedent, and I tend to agree ... but these "napping sounds" are an eerie analogue, of sorts.

P.S. That's Steve Albini at the beginning of the video.

Have you ever listened to Ken Nordine's Word Jazz? Your conversations with yourself remind me a bit of himi.

Yes and yes, Spalding.

I have loved Nordine's work for decades.  I still vaguely remember his voice from commercials when I was a kid.

I've read several reviews of the book and it sounds interesting.  I understand sinkholes play an integral role.

Fredericks, I cannot get enough of your Podcast. I listened to 5 of em in a row yesterday, and it put me in a fantastically fuzzy head space. It is the perfect backdrop for assembling modular office furniture.

My betrothed ran into my office last night thinking I had left the TV and computer on at the same time. She then froze and listened to the better part of an episode, and said that she wasn't sure what this (your podcast) was, but that it was much better than the Mort Maron's and Comedy and Everyone Else that I normally have playing. She made me put a couple episodes on her iPod, as she said your voice is nice break from the grade school music teacher voices that she OD's on with NPR.

Hi Fredericks,

I stumbled upon this while I was looking for your website just now and it made me laugh:

Also, you might want to embed the Mind Thing logo / album art in your podcast files so they show up on people's iPods and whatnot. It should be pretty easy to do, I think you can use iTunes.

Anyways, love the podcast, keep it up dude!

Cheers,
John.

Fredericks,
To what extent would you say you're influenced by the likes of Negativland/ "Over the Edge", the radio program "Puzzling Evidence" (or any other Curch of the Subgenius type programming -- yes, I mean that word in both ways: as a radio program and programming the individual), or some of Ken Nordine's work? I hear strong similarities in all of these to what you're doing.

I have addressed some of these topics previously, but you're a newb.

I described my podcast to Tom as a cross between NegativLand and Firesign Theater.

Have loved Nordine since I was a kid and he was doing commercials

I adore Word Jazz.

I like Negativland quite a bit as well.

Over the Edge and Puzzling Evidence are too scrambled and incoherent for my taste.  Five minutes and my brain tires.

I like Mr Dobbs but I haven't given him any money.

I will listen to Ivan Stang.

As far as his followers go, I've met a few, got along well but not smashingly.

You can't spell Fredericks without dfk; or you could, but if you did, it would be reerics, which sounds like a minor character in a Camus novel, or a skin disease.

And thanks for asking.
