Title: Is Favorite FMU DJs a topic yet?
Post by: Paul DeLouisiana on May 09, 2011, 09:09:08 AM
Well now it is! Who else do you guys listen to?

Best Show at the top of course. I listen to the bulk of my weekly FMU intake at my desk at work using the smartphone app which is the best. I start the day off with some Michael Shelley, Dave the Spazz or Downtown Soulville. Sometimes I'll listen to some Todd O Phonic Todd or Ira K archives. Then I switch it over to some Seven Second Delay or Dusty Show archives for a little talk and callin action. Then I finish the day off with a Best Show archive. Been doing this for a year or so and it has yet to get old. Oh also I listen to Cherry Blossom Clinic on Saturday.

The Best Show was my gateway drug to Evan Funk Davies (back when his show followed Tom's, and Tom would always make outrageous claims about what Evan had in store).

Michael Shelley is a more recent discovery for me, his show's pretty great. I like visiting his alternative universe where all his favorite songs are "guaranteed #1 hits".

In addition to TBS and Best Show Gems, I listen pretty religiously to Downtown Soulville, The Cherry Blossom Clinic, Mudd Up, The Evan "Funk" Davies Show, The Dusty Show, and Too Much Information. I go back and forth with Seven Second Delay, thinking of quitting it again. I listened to Sinner's Crossroads for a long time, but hit a wall with gospel music for some reason -- thinking of going back to it, though. I used to listen to The Speakeasy and a little thing called The Acousmatic Theater Hour when they were on the schedule. Also a fan of Brian Turner, Liz Berg, Talk's Cheap, Reggae Schoolroom, and Sound and Safe, though I usually just listen to those in the car.

I listen to EFD and Joe Belock religiously.

Choking on Cufflinks was another favorite show. Anyone know if it's ever coming back in any form?

Choking on Cufflinks was another favorite show.

I discovered that one about a month before it went off the schedule.  I'd never given it a thought because I absolutely hated the name.

Packaging is important!

GAYLORD.

Three of my childhood heroes:

Bill Kelly, who was a key factor in developing my taste in music. I still remember the first time I heard "Another Girl, Another Planet" from his show.

Glen Jones, whose Labor Day record-setting marathon was one of the most fun things I've ever listened to in my life. I talked rasslin' with him on the air for a bit at 4 am.

Chris T., the erstwhile host of Aerial View. I spent my middle school years pranking the hell out of him until that resulted in some troubles (to be discussed at a later time). But then later on in high school and college I seriously listened to him and called in on occasion.

The fucking gum chewing drives me insane.

SSD took me a while to get to but seriously it was because it was only an hour long and I felt like it went by too fast to enjoy, like adult swim shows. I've recently come around to both. I think Andy Breckman is hilarious.

I agree that Andy's hilarious, which is why I loved the show for a year and a half even though he doesn't seem to try and he repeats the same jokes over and over. But I'm not crazy about the UCB shows on the radio -- they're probably really fun live, and clearly he likes them better than being in the studio, but I get more entertainment from hearing him suffer.

The show has always had occasional flashes of brilliance, though, like when Andy kept calling the front desk at Ken's hotel at SXSW. That was fantastic.

Joe Belock and Choking on Cufflinks are/were good, too.

Greggulator, Chris T. is on the air again, Fridays after Downtown Soulville.

Yeh that was the best. I often liken the interplay to Scharpling & Wurster or at least a classic comedian/straight man routine.

I'm pretty sure I remember that, unless it was some other little punk I'm thinking of.  "God," I thought, "what a little punk."

I've been among the 7SD faithful forever, but I'm just about this close to giving up on the live shows. The studio shows are so much funnier, and Andy's joy in getting to coast during the live shows is all too evident. Lame to complain about entertainment you're getting for free, I know.

I don't know if I'd be quite as into it now if he were still on, but I was never happier listening to WFMU than I used to be listening to The Hound while puttering around the house on a relaxing Saturday afternoon. Strange to think I used to have to set up a tape recorder to catch it if I wanted to be doing something else that day.

I find it a little frustrating. The occasional flashes of brilliance are absolutely there, which is why I haven't actually given up yet- but according to iTunes I haven't listened in months. I think it would be great if I were a radio listener, which doesn't require the same commitment to Listening To Something as a podcast.

The most recent studio 7SD had some sustained hilarity toward the end, when Andy discovered a new way to annoy Ken by misleading callers as to whether they were on the air or on hold.  This illustrates my point that when the show really pins the laff meter, it is usually borne of Andy's desperation to pull some entertainment value out of the wreckage, which never happens on stage.

Love Monica, and her premiums are some of the best.

Therese's show is fun and kind of the perfect FMU show to listen to at work.

Nickel & Dime Radio was my gateway to the Best Show, when it used to follow.

Also Give the Drummer Some, Sinner's Crossroads, Downtown Soulville, Shrunken Planet, obviously the CBC, and several more.

Ditto. Monica is an awesome human being, and I listen to her premiums more than I do any other DJ's.

I like many of those already mentioned but Bryce, Inflatable Squirrel Carcass, Daniel Blumin, and Pseu Braun are also personal favorites.  I still frequently listen to the Night People archives.

I have started listening to Airborne Event with Dan Bodah because it is one when I am driving home from karate class. I really like it. A lot.
