No underbites,

I couldn't help noticing (probably the intent of the thread, yes?) that all the filenames are in French.

Transport Tycoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_Tycoon) is a game in which you run your own transport company. Sounds kinda boring, but it's actually a lot of fun and quite addictive. I used to play it a lot as a kid and I just started playing it again this week in a Portuguese version. I'm working in Lisbon for a couple of months and this helps me learn the language a bit (in the same way I learned English from tv and computer games). If you search for it, I'm sure it's available for download on some abandonware sites.

Sarah, where was your desktop photo taken¿

It's a shot of Corfe Castle, in Dorset, where one of my zombie pals (i.e., a fellow who plays the same zombie game I do) went rock climbing last weekend.  He just happened to send me a link to all his vacation snaps just after I posted my appallingly dull original desktop here, and I liked that particular picture so much I decided to adopt it.  There were some other neat photos of sheer limestone cliffs rearing out of the water in dramatic fashion, but the one of the castle wowed me the most.

P.S. On behalf of the photographer, I thank you, Purple-Shirt.

P.P.S.  Scarlett Johansson looks far less drunk than the woman sprawling on Bruce's desktop.

Too embarassed to post my desktop as I'm so disorganised it is just filled with icons, most of which I have no clue as to their origin. I can reveal I have Annie Leibovitz's amazing picture of the Queen as my background.

It's all I have, in lieu of a girlfriend...sob :(  Mr. "Smells Like Festering Roadkill" pretty much hit it right on the money. I actually do use all those apps at least once a week, in all seriousness. I've actually purchased most of them, which is a strange phenomenon I've noticed ever since I switched my personal machines over to the Mac (I was a 100% warez d00d, back when I was Windows loooser). I'll leave you to guess which ones I'm still...err..."evaluating". :P

Oh and where can I send you the cease and desist notice for your FoT Forum signature? :P

(unless of course I'm so totally out of the loop with FoT Forum happenings that I didn't realize that you had that in your sig before I did, in which case I'll just go back to using inappropriately large JPEGs of my cats and my rice-rocket as my signature)

It was this episode that initially got me hooked on Louis.

I went in watching it, totally expecting a trainwreck, but at the end I found myself actually thinking to myself, "other than the fact that they are homo-hating lunatics who cause a lot of people who don't deserve it a LOT of emotional misery...the Phelps family members aren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be."

I'm amazed that Louis Theroux manages to sustain the trust of complete wackos like that for such long periods of time (even with all the rolling cameras and microphones) despite the fact that he constantly questions the sanity and beliefs of these very same people. His show about American neo-Nazi's is great...watching Louis get Tom Metzger to admit that he thinks he could get "10 times" more women to paw themselves than Denzel Washington could is a total hoot. And the scene where he shares popsicles with Tom in his kitchen reminded me of the cognitive dissonance I experienced when I first saw Ozzy's egg cooking scene in Decline II. He's absolutely brilliant.

Hey Dorvid switch to Transmisson instead of that memory hog Azureus. Plus its got a cooler icon instead of a blue frog. Its the gear shift thing on my desktop. Plus Transmission is a mac built.

Wish I transfered my version of fetch over also from my old computer but I really dont use FTP anymore.

Transmission is a great app, other than the fact that it's banned on virtually every bittorrent tracker that's worth a damn.

So there's still a good reason to keep Azureus around if you're a Mac dweeb.

just sayin'

Thanks for the heads-up about Transmission.

Fetch has a free trial period that seems to never actually end.
After a few months, they make you wait a minute or so before "extending" your trial, but that's it.
Wacky.  I'm assuming it's slower than the paid version, though.

Actually the newest build is now widely accepted (Dimeadozen, Oink, UKnova) since they worked out the problems. Azureus was the biggest waste of time for any torrent user. I used to use Tomato but they does not work so well in the seeding on the new intel macs for some weird reason.

a uTorrent clone for Mac has been the holy grail for quite some time now. Nothing quite comes close yet, sadly.

Title: Re: Post Your Desktop
Post by: Jason on May 14, 2007, 05:31:25 PM
I switched from Azureus to uTorrent and never looked back.

As for Louis Theroux, Louis and the Nazis is without a doubt his finest work. I've seriously watched it maybe ten times, if you can't find to download it's on youtube but it's pretty blurry and out of synch.
There's some of his other work to stream here -
http://www.tv-links.co.uk/show.do/1/1376
some of it is pretty Anglo-centric, especially the celebrity stuff.
In a weird way I think he's similar to Sacha Baron Cohen in the way he makes people bare themsleves, but where Cohen gets people to drop their guard by subterfuge Theroux is just a nice intelligent guy who cuts the more probing questions with genuine interest in the lives of his subjects.

Hey! Some of us use it to steal apps and comic books. And, to be fair, I buy apps I want to support, and I buy comics that are really good. The rest I just download and read occasionally. Like, oh god, when Liefeld took over Teen Titans? OOOOUUUUCH. That was so bad. I could not buy that shit, but I wanted to read it, yeah? It was painful. How does that man still get work?

I wouldn't mind an invite to a torrent site if anybody is willing to throw one my way. :)

And I have eight. If I see Stereolaffs products uploaded, there's going to be trouble.  >:(

There are actually two Scharpling and Wurster "Unreleased" albums on OiNK right now.  They are basically just stuff that is available from the archive, but presented in a convenient, edited format.

ewww...looks like all of S&W's "commercial" CD releases are being shared there (everything except for TAOTS).

Time to summon Roderick J. Martinez.

But what kind of FWD scumbag do you have to be to download (much less upload) the Stereolaffs stuff?  You're not ripping off Ahmet Ertugun, here.

I think it goes against my contract to post pictures of my desktop. I know we're not supposed to take photos in here -- corporate espionage fears?

Ugh. I need a new job.

They are actually Photoshops (me on vacation at some resort and my wife at the Great Wall) to pretend like we've been somewhere. Just for us, I haven't posted them anywhere! We've been married almost 5 years and we still haven't been able to take a honeymoon.  :-[ But at least we have our Photoshops!

ChrisF: what are almost all of your icons?

I like to keep my icons small and out of the way, but from left to right on my dock i have: webkit, netnewswire, camino, adium, xpad, textedit, marsedit, graphic converter, skitch, illustrator, photoshop, nestopia, transmission, itunes, quicktime, vlc, delicious library, xee, appdelete and system prefs. and then my apps folder and all the minimized windows that usually clutter up my desktop.

on the menu bar i have skitch, iscrobbler, caffeine and applescript (im the only person i know who writes and uses them).

on the right it's just a bunch of folders and aliases.

It's actually graffiti, I guess. If it was painted on paper and then pasted onto public property, does that still count as graffiti?

It's been months since I finally gave in and changed my desktop from the default OS X space thing. But I miss it! The planetarium at the museum where I work is run off an iMac- when we bring kids in at a time other than one of the public shows, the computer is usually being projected on the dome and the background always seems very fitting.
