On the back of the success of the last gathering.....
On tuesday the 5th of June on the roof garden of the Iron Monkey like minded FOTs and Best Show listeners will once again gather in order to drink, chat and listen to the Best Show which will be played over the bar's sound system.
Tom Scharpling will once again make a personal appearance but this time he will be accompanied by none other than Jon Wurster.
So, it's The Iron Monkey at 97 Greene Street, two short blocks from the Exchange Place Path station and a stones throw from the WFMU studios.
Click here for map. (http://www.google.com/maps?q=97+Greene+St,+Jersey+City,+NJ+07302,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title)
Listening party 8-11pm
Personal appearance by Scharpling and Wurster at 11pm.

aw, crap.
Are t's b's invited, or just the dudes?
-
We should have a superchunk pool party fot meetup.
-
I'm in
-
YES.
-
does this mean a rare in-studio wurster appearance on the 5th?
edit: and a warning call from the gorch tonight?
I was/am giddy anticipating next week's show
-
Ouch! I wish I'd known about this one before going to last week's.
If I drove up from DC again just for this, it might creep Tom out a bit, and my next contest entry will likely be pushing that envelope as it is. :)
It's sure to be a hall-of-fame event, though. Have fun, fots! Drink a malted!
Edit: Screw it, I'll probably go.
-
That's it. I'm coming.
Please recommend accomodations in the Jersey City/Newark area for Tuesday nite.
-
Cripes!!
-
Maybe some kind Jersy City FOTs could offer some floorspace, I would if I didn't live in one room.
I checked a couple of nearby hotels but there doesn't appear to be any availability, if you are going to book a room it might be wise to post here and see if anyone else wants in so you can split the cost and share rooms.
Also if anyone is driving in maybe you could post here to see if you could pick somebody up on the way, you'd feel good about yourself and you might get some gas money.
There were about 25 people last time, I'm certain we can double those numbers this time especially if we pool our resources in terms of transport and accomodation.
-
I briefly considered coming up but I've got a meeting the next day. Oh well, I'll be able to intensely focus on the Gorch and stare raptly at the computer speakers.
I'll be in Jersey City the last two days of June though, if anyone wants to meet up then. No, there's no special events, no listening party and no celebrities involved... but there will be plenty of strained conversation!
-
You know, I actually checked out airfares. The cheapest that turned up last night was almost $500, with the trip lasting six hours. And that doesn't include the two hours to Bangor. By bus, it would cost only $85, but the trip each way would take thirteen hours (again, not including the trip to Bangor).
If that weren't enough to discourage me, there's the fact that I'd probably seize up with shock the instant I stepped off the plane/bus, since the largest town I've been to since 1997 (not 1999, as I misremembered last night) has a population of less than 6,000. Some friendly FOT would thus have to have to act as my Virgil from start to finish for me to function at all.
So, all in all, not too practicable. Guess I'll just slum it in the chat with all the other deprived souls.
-
Yes, if someone wants to split a hotel room, lemme know. I would forever be indebted to anyone offering floorspace, but my flight leaves from EWR at 6:15A on Wednesday, thus making me less than an ideal guest.
I'll be Amtraking across PA on Tuesday. This is exciting.

I found a departing flight for $174.00 and a returning flight for $59.00. I'd do it if it were $59.00 both ways. Also, I'm already taking off three days in June, and I'm pretty sure someone in my advisory group has that week off.
Curses. Foiled again. :'(
-
Wow, Sarah, you are a Shut-In's Shut-In. Is there a magazine that does profiles of that sort of thing?
Since 1996, I've been to 13 of the 14 largest cities in the US (stupid San Antonio) and 37 of the top 50.
-
I can't believe I'm really so unusual--although perhaps I am unique among FOT in this regard (or at least among frequent FOT posters/chatters).
I also must note that I'm more precisely a stick-in-the-mud than a shut-in. I do still venture outside from time to time. For now.
-
Laurie keep looking.
Really, I can't stress how much of a one off this. After the last meet-up the tentative plan was to have another one towards the end of the summer but unique circumstances dictated next tuedsay.
-
Even though it would only set me back about $1,000 (what, you're not made of money?), I probably won't make it.
I am jealous though.
-
I'm still on the fence; a ride-along buddy/gas-chipper-inner would make it more feasible.
Or perhaps there's someone rolling through Northern Virginia who could pick me up? I'm half a mile off of 95.
I can't afford a hotel so I'd either be returning that night or staying at the Chateau Lombardi.
-
Unfortunately, flights to Newark and La Guardia are ridiculous. Philly's OK but is a 90 minute to 2 hour drive, and I gotta be back at work.
You all have a great time, though.
Reminds me of the time I was going to see Wurster do comedy at the Cat's Cradle - I got sick about 4 hours before. I was on the floor in agony still saying, "I think we can make the show - he never does standup!," but the throwing up got in the way.
-
I have a feeling my boss will say NO if I ask for two more days off next month, especially since one of my co-workers will also be off on Wednesday of that week (and possibly Tuesday, as she has jury duty on Monday).
WAH. I'll call Triple A, see if I can't get a roundtrip price of around $100. If someone can hook me up with couchspace for Tuesday night, and my boss will say yes to Tuesday and (maybe part of) Wednesday off, I will be good to go. I might be able to get her to say yes if I agree to come in on Wednesday from, like, 1 pm-7 pm, depending on when my return flight comes in.
-
Wurster do comedy
I did not know this! Any recordings or whatnot?!
-
Friggin' figures. I'm flying back home on the 8th to decommission my Baltimore rowhouse. Oh well, next time.
You in attendance: pictures please.
-
B,
I think he only did 10 minutes or so. There's an account elsewhere on the net where he talks about doing standup - apparently he kept changing his appearance (shaving off his beard between sets, etc.) and the audience completely didn't get what he was doing.
He's also done a couple of bits on the Conan O'Brien show, but I've never seen those either.

MY BOSS SAID OKAY! YAY!
I need to figure out where I'm staying before I book any plane tickets. If some generous FOT wants to let me stay at their house overnight on Tuesday, please speak now. I don't need a bed or even a futon. I'll take a couch, gladly. I will be leaving on an early, early flight out of Newark on Wednesday, if everything goes according to plan, so, uh, what Josh said. Don't worry, I'll make taxi arrangements or something, and I'll try to be quiet as I exit.
-
Wow, good show. I may be able to pick you up from the airport at least.
-
Wow, good show. I may be able to pick you up from the airport at least.
Thanks, that would be great. Based on the flights I looked at yesterday, I would probably get in by around noon-ish...
I'm going to call AAA today and see what I can do re: flights. I don't want to spend more than $200-250MAX, so we'll see what can be done with that. God, I hope I didn't wait too long and they're all booked. Shouldn't be too hard, as I only need one seat.
Josh, or anyone else traveling and staying over night, let me know if you have a place to stay. If I get my flight sorted and everything else figured out, I may wind up booking a room at the Hyatt right by the Iron Monkey for convenience. Hotels.com has a cheaper rate than the one on Hyatt's official website, and maybe I can get a better deal elsewhere... If someone wants to shack up with me and knock a quarter of the room rate (that's $57.25) my way, that would be fine. Please private message meeeee.
This is still just a maybe. I'll know more later tonight or tomorrow.
CRAP: Now both the departing and returning flights are $174... I'll see what AAA can do for me. Still, I can afford it. I just got my tax refund back, so it's still possible.
-
There's also a Doubletree and a Candlewood suites very close by although they didn't have availability last time I checked, might be worth checking anyway.
Also the Holland motor lodge - http://www.hollandmotorlodge.com/
I'd gladly let everyone crash on the floor of my tiny apartment if I was on my own or if I'd moved into my new house sooner.
-
Hey kiddies: I checked with Grimlocka and she ok'd a limited FOT sleepover.
Here's the problem(s):
1. We can fit one person (on a foldout couch.)
2. We are not too far from the Iron Monkey, but far enough that you will need to get a ride/take a cab to our place. I have a two-seat hybrid which precludes guests from sitting anywhere but on the stick shift, which I discourage heartily. If an FOT can offer a ride to you to my apartment (which is right by the Holland tunnel on Manila Ave) that would rock.
3. We have two cats. If you are allergic, they will make you sneeze.
4. We're close (10 minute walk) to PATH train, so if you need to go back to airport/whatever, you can do it pretty easily, if you allow for a lot of time. There's also a $25 cab back to EWR. A1 taxi.
5. We both have work on Wednesday, so will need to throw you out end our sleepover early AM.
And that's it.
I don't know who to pick, and I hate not to pick everyone, so I guess I'll let you all fight it out.
Perhaps a dance-off is in order? Or an Acrowar challenge to the death?
Grimlock
PS: Those with Star Wars jammies take precedent.
-
Plane tickets PURCHASED! Am I CRAZY? MAYBE!
I'm so hardcore, I should put X's in front of my name!
-
OK, I can let people stay with me as long as they don't mind either the couch or a tent in the garden. I can take a fair amount and you won't get kicked out in the morning, not to diminish the kindness of Grimlock's offer, I'm just saying.
-
i can drive anyone from the iron monkey to another place in jersey city, if needed.
-
I might be able to arrange a couch for somebody. But I'm in Brooklyn. So maybe you should just sleep in Jasons garden. I am doing this solely to diminish Grimlock's offer.

-
this will be fun.
-
I am coming from Union and can give anyone a ride in the general area that needs it.
Also, I can drive people around the Jersey City area afterwards.
-
I was thinking of bringing a portable-type radio on Tuesday because last time it was way too difficult to hear TBS through that tiny speaker. Would doing so be socially damaging or would anyone want this?
-
well, i'm planning on attending the meet-up tomorrow and i just wanted to say i can't wait to meet everyone!
-
I'm glad so many people are coming. I just bought some name tags because it was so hard to remember evrybody's name last time, even harder to correlate those names with their forum peronas.
As for the radio, the feed in the bar was streamed over the internet, if you bring a radio it's going to be really out of synch with the PA. Bring it if you want but, seeing as it will probably be raining, I think we should try and take over the main bar area on the roof where there are more speakers and we won't have to contend with that crappy fountain/copper urinal thing.
-
I'm thinking about showing up in one of my patented last-minute changes of mind. Are all the local FOT spots (FOT squats) filled up at this point?
-
Nobody has taken me up on my offer. I think the rain will mean a tent is unfeasible but if you don't mind the couch or floor you're welcome at mine, and that goes for everyone.
-
I'm going to try my best to go! I enjoyed meeting people at the last one.
-
Associate Producer Mike, will you be partaking in a pre-Best Show dinner at the Flamingo? Are we invited to join you? I've never eaten in a real Jersey diner!

ahem... that's a BALTIMORE diner in that photo, my lady...
i'm just sayin. carry on.
-
I just found out that I can afford a couch to someone, so if you don't mind/want to take a ride to Brooklyn with me, then I can give someone space to sleep. I'd actually like to. It'll be a fun time.
P.S.: Do they let kids under 21 in? Because if they don't, my friend is going to be standing outside all night, waiting for me...
-
Last call for a riding-buddy or to be someone's riding-buddy?
That it seems there would be a couch for me up there somewhere is very encouraging, but the weather and my ridiculous fiscal priorities are still giving me doubts about making the trip. I might try to catch a bus. About how long would it take to get from Penn Station to the Iron Monkey on public transit during rush-hour in a thunderstorm?
-
You have to come. It's real easy from Penn Station. Penn Station New York is the 33rd st station on this map.
http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/map.html
If your bus stops at Penn Newark then all the better.
Still, I'd just drive.

Actually, Penn Station NY is on 8th Avenue and the 33rd Street PATH is on 6th Avenue. You have to exit the train station and walk two blocks east to catch the PATH. And if you're taking the bus, that will bring you to the Port Authority Bus Station, which is at 42nd & 8th. So you'd have to either walk down to the PATH at 33rd & 6th, or take the A, C or E train (in the basement of Port Authority) downdown to the Chambers Street/World Trade Center stop and take the PATH from there. Both the Newark and Hoboken Trains stop at Exchange Place.
Still, it's easy and the trains run every 5 minutes or so during rush hour.

Yeah, I'll probably be at the Flamingo before the show. Everyone is welcome to join although I would hardly recommend The Flamingo as the ultimate Jersey diner experience. It suits my purposes though (it's cheap and it's very close to the radio station).
-
Waaaah! I can't go. I got work at 6am the morning after. I would be incredibly tired. I was gonna bring a set of metal chains and leather jackets for the chain fight between Tom and da Gorch. I'll try to get off for Wednesday (doubtful).
Have a fun time everyone!
-
I shall be at the I-Ron Monkey this evening as well. Good times WILL be had by all.
-
I will be there in spirit. Have fun, everybody! And I want photos, dammit!
If anybody wants to call me and talk, I'd love to hear from the group. :)

Tonight is the time for you to gather together at the Iron Monkey and celebrate those things that you like and think are fun!
Sorry I can't be there!
-
Now I'm bitter - I can't go. And this is one of those damn things that everyone would say that it was great even if it wasn't. Which it will be, anyway. Ah, well. Have fun. I'll try to get up there eventually.
-
The stock for tonight is about to rise...
MC Steinberg will be in attendance!
-
Now I feel better.
-
i hope he knows its 21 and over
-
It was fun fun fun, until daddy took the t-bird away.
-
jealous!
-
Last night was amazing, seriously. I'd say there were at least 75 people there by the end and every single one of them was super nice.
Thanks to everyone who made the effort to get there, especially Josh and Laurie who came all the way from Florida, David/Dorvid who came from Washington and Susannah and her two gentleman companions who came from Philly.
My head hurts.
-
I had a blast and it was great meeting people. Like Jason said, everyone was very cool and made it a fun night.
That said, I am changing my name on here because I don't want to face the prospect of another night wearing a name tag that says "p. nut chew."
-
My head hurts.
I bet Laurie's does, too.
-
We drank the Yuengling tap dry!
-
No Jason...thank you! It was a blast :)
-
I gotta say, we're some good looking people. I'd do it again.
-
This thread really needs pictures and not the ones Jason left on my phone.

I mentioned aspecialthing to Sr. Wurster and, without missing a beat, he reached into his bag and gave this comedy-nerd something truly special - the fucking Gorch script!
Also, Tom's autograph contained an asterisk!
The photos I took turned out lousy (thanks for these, Susannah!), so this post may seem to just be all about me and my comedy fan-boy tendencies.
That's not true, though. The main reason I made the drive up again was to get to know the rest of you guys.
I'm constantly taken aback by the little cross-section of humanity this show seems to attract.
It was such a pleasant atmosphere and such a fine group of folks; truly a night to remember.
THANK YOU, JERSEY! ;D
-
I am so, so jealous. Damn all your eyes.
Would it be possible to add captions to the pictures so I can know who's who?
Finally, I love the suspicious sidelong glance in this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/arcuradio/533822386/in/set-72157600320358015) one. Reminds me of the look my dogs get when they think I'm going to take a toy away from them.
Oh, and this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/arcuradio/533825000/in/set-72157600320358015) one! The boyz look so noble: stoic, staunch, they stand prepared to fight for the good guys.

Which one of these is the REAL Grateful Dead fan?

Would it be possible to add captions to the pictures so I can know who's who?
I'm starting to add notes but I'm bad with names. Everyone, please go to the Flickr page (http://www.flickr.com/groups/friendsoftom/). I think other people (as long as you're a Flickr member, although maybe you have to join the FOT group) can add notes to the photos. Help me! Identify thy attractive selves!!!

It looks and sounds like the BEST of times (see what I did there?). What a turnout!

Ha ha! You got my number, buffcoat. FYI, I got "off the bus" after Brent Mydland joined the band.
-
I've got "Skeletons in the Closet" on CD and "Touch of Grey" on mp3 myself.
But the break for me with the Dead came in about 1994, when the Deadheads descended on Chapel Hill. The only time I ever saw people selling plastic-wrapped BOWLS OF SALAD on Franklin Street.

I'm jealous! Looks like it was an awesome time. Next time I'm anywhere near New Jersey I'm at least forcing Jason to drink with me.

I think you can pretty safely replace "forcing Jason to drink with me" to "finding where Jason happens to be drinking at that time".

Some of those people clearly aren't posting. Are they lurkers, or, Dear God, do they choose not to be involved in the message board?
-
But, but . . . how could this be possible? Wait . . . what's this sound I hear? I think it might be my world crumbing.
-
I smiled the entire time, looking at those pictures! It looks like you all had a fantastic time. Why don't you all hop a plane to Spokane and take the listening party on the road? :D
I like the big crowd picture, where Tom is sticking out of the middle smiling. Cracks me up!
-
Oh, I was talking to Brett for about a minute and I didn't know he was the M.C. Steinberg until right now.
The Gorch painting was amazing.
Tom called me "The Pride of Union" and made my night.

I'm done adding notes to my photos from the meet-up (http://www.flickr.com/photos/arcuradio/sets/72157600320358015/). If you recognize someone I didn't identify, please add a note to the proper photo.

Everyone I met was so nice. I was so happy that I went. Big thanks to my grandparents for scheduling their wedding anniversary on the best possible weekend, which allowed this trip to happen.
It was great to meet No Underbites, Jason, TRocks, Susannah, Grimlock, Dorvid, and the other posters from the board. Tom, Ms. Barberie, Jon, and APMike were amazingly gracious. Sorry to Andy from Pittsburgh for telling you that you know nothing about football after you suggested that Chris Gardocki wasn't bad last year (I'm right though; he was 3rd from last in punting average in 2006). Hope everyone enjoyed the gobs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoopie_pie) and sorry my camera's flash is so goddamn bright.
-
I forgot to thank Josh for the truly comprehensive photo collection, the kick-ass DVD, and the GOBS.
Also, Jason and Megan for hosting me, Ms.B and Therese for the swag and kind words, and Susannah for my Tom/Jon photos.
Why haven't we heard from Laurie yet?
The picture w/ her, Josh, Tom, and Jon is very sweet.
-
I slept 12 hours last night!
-
Thanks again to everybody who came out and make it such an awesome night! Jon and I were both very touched by the show of support from youse all.
An especially special thanks to Jason who put it all together. You are one in a million, sir.
Tom.
