Title: The Return of The Best Show
Post by: Kormodd on February 20, 2014, 01:37:48 PM
Since these messages were read aloud in Mike's Skype Thing, which Fredericks will soon release a recording of, I assume it's okay to post this:

Tom Scharpling: What am I, supposed to do the show on Skype?
[2/18/2014 10:02:27 PM] Tom Scharpling: I'm setting it up.
[2/18/2014 10:02:28 PM] Tom Scharpling: Having meetings.
[2/18/2014 10:02:35 PM] Tom Scharpling: We're making it happen.
[2/18/2014 10:02:39 PM] Tom Scharpling: Had two calls today.
[2/18/2014 10:02:43 PM] Tom Scharpling: WE WILL BE BACK.
[2/18/2014 10:02:46 PM] Tom Scharpling: TOM
[2/18/2014 10:02:48 PM] Tom Scharpling: JON
[2/18/2014 10:02:49 PM] Tom Scharpling: GARY
[2/18/2014 10:02:54 PM] Tom Scharpling: And....
[2/18/2014 10:02:57 PM] Tom Scharpling: VANCE
[2/18/2014 10:02:59 PM] Tom Scharpling: And.....
[2/18/2014 10:03:05 PM] Tom Scharpling: The rest!
[2/18/2014 10:03:25 PM] Tom Scharpling: Even "AP Mike" will be back.

[2/18/2014 10:12:23 PM] Tom Scharpling: Mike has literally been drinking this whole time. That's why he's not talking.

[2/18/2014 10:24:51 PM] Tom Scharpling: Sign up for the mailing list. Updates will come there.
[2/18/2014 10:25:08 PM] Tom Scharpling: Some interesting possibilities.
[2/18/2014 10:25:14 PM] Tom Scharpling: You haven't seen anything!
[2/18/2014 10:25:24 PM] Tom Scharpling: I will start the mailings in the next 10 days.
[2/18/2014 10:25:27 PM] Tom Scharpling: Four a day.
[2/18/2014 10:25:36 PM] Tom Scharpling: No, one a week.
[2/18/2014 10:25:45 PM] Tom Scharpling: No idea yet, Mike.
[2/18/2014 10:25:59 PM] Tom Scharpling: We are going to do THE SAME SHOW

[2/18/2014 10:25:45 PM] Tom Scharpling: No idea yet, Mike.

Pretty sure this was in response to Mike's inquiry about the number of phone lines.

He was promised a stethoscope mic... and a pompadour.

I really hope Tom is back on a mic for Kiss's induction into the Rock-n-Roll HOF in April.

"Criss did not indicate whether he would attend the induction; Frehley said he is unsure whether he’ll be there."

Frehley then went on to say that after the induction he would further be unsure of whether he had been there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the only why Ace and Peter get anywhere near the stage for the Hall of Fame induction is if they've disguised themelves as (or in Peter's case, is currently working as) waiters at the Hall of Fame ceremony location.

Can someone pony up the cash to pay the Unmasked cover artist to draw this scene as a part two of the original album cover?

Since we are wishing on things to happen on the new Best Show:

I wish for a complete (or abridged) reading of "Still Foolin' 'Em" by the master of the dark arts (of racism) Billy Crystal.
Just recently saw that it also has been published as an audiobook.
Maybe there is some material for the sound collages in that.

Any of you cats notice that there's a new-old episode that was recently added to the bottom of the iTunes podcast feed for the Best Show? It's the November 25, 2008 episode. Or maybe I'm just a lucky duck and encountered some beneficial glitch!

So...that new Tom tweet has me feeling really great about The Best Show coming back soon.  What more does this guy gotta do to prove there is a huge audience for his work?  What, a critically-acclaimed show wasn't enough?  13 years running an internationally-listened to radio show wasn't enough?  Out of a small, independent radio station?  Without the big money backing afforded to the Seacrests of the planet?

Somehow, someone was convinced to produce The Animal, Paul Blart, Mad TV, Brickleberry, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Midnite...the list of comedy dreck goes on for days.  And yet something with a PROVEN track record gets shut down?  And why?  Because it wasn't based off of some podcast?  So you're telling me if Tom rents a couple of rooms in someone's building like Scott Aukerman, IFC is good to go?  Look, I'm not knocking Comedy Bang Bang.  I like it.  I listen to it all the time.  But it's inferior comedy to the Best Show.  And moreover, it should (and is) more difficult to translate that level of improv-based comedy to a TV set than Tom's comedy.

I miss Tuesdays.  Life is hard.  The Best Show made it a little more tolerable.  It was more than just a respite from the ordinary.  The show made you think.  It exercised comedy muscles in ways that other programs can't, or don't.  I guess life isn't always fair.

Never said The Best Show was the only thing I did, it's just something I enjoy a lot.  Is this not the Forum to discuss the Best Show?  Go read a book.  Ha.  Okay poster with over 340 posts.  It's not like this is my personal blog.  It's literally the only place I've ever discussed the Best Show.

And "upset Tom is not working" is not how I phrased anything.  I'm annoyed it can't be monetized.  Tom can do whatever he wants.

You're kind of all over the place here, son. I've read your post a couple times and can't figure out what you actually want. The Best Show to return to the radio or be a podcast? Tom to have a TV show? The Best Show to be a TV show?

Somehow, someone was convinced to produce The Animal, Paul Blart, Mad TV, Brickleberry, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Midnite...the list of comedy dreck goes on for days.
Are you seriously questioning why someone would have produced PAUL BLART: MALL COP? Kevin James was the star of a top-five sitcom at the time. Leno's "Tonight Show" was a license to print money for NBC for two decades. "@Midnight" was initially picked up for a one-month trial, is insanely cheap to produce, and gets huge ratings.

He is clearly just venting his feelings about the best show.  I don't think it really merits mocking him or being generally cruel.  We are all aware that the money frequently goes to business minded projects that seem financially solvent, shows like Big Bang Theory and the Mall Cop movie.  So quit being jerks.

Hopefully the right people took notice. Because today proved that there are A LOT OF US that want the Best Show back.

I'm not sure what a twitter flurry can do for getting the show back on the air, but it never hurts to show support for something that you like.  I'm sure it's a nightmare of hoop jumping getting The Best Show back on the air.

#BringBackTheBestShow trended so much world over today. It was so amazing getting to see all the FoTs making these amazing in jokes about the show, showing Tom support. I loved it. It felt like a Tuesday.

TVLand tried to hijack it:

TVLand ‏@tvland  5h
#BringBackTheBestShow Guess everyone heard we're bringing back #ThreesCompany this weekend! Knock on our door Saturday AM for a marathon!

But I responded in defense:

It tells potential employers that there is a massive fanbase for the show.

my understanding is that he just wanted to get paid to do the show.  WFMU is a listener supported station.
not only do Tom & Jon (and even AP Mike) not get paid for doing the show there, they can't discuss any other projects they are working on.  I think Tom is looking for a way to get paid a living wage.

Unless you count the endorsement deals from Coors.

I want to see the best show come back with Larry Da Perv and Spike playing the roles of Horatio and Marcellus in Hamlet, and Mike playing Bernardo.  Tom is the ghost.  Philly Boy Roy is the prince.

I've signed up for mobile alerts when tom tweets to catch the announcement of the return of the best show.  I honestly don't know whether that's sad or not, and it's made me question whether the best show is my favorite thing of all time.

Music and comedy have been coequals in my life. I still remember hearing it for the first time. It was like finding el dorado.

Still, the mobile alerts thing...probably pathetic. I'll take the licks where the licks are due.

right there with you.  the extent to which i enjoy the best show has made everything else a VERY distant second.  when jake fogelnest or julie klausner make references to the best show in a very easy way, where you can tell its just a part of the normal thought process, i find that pretty validating.  I think i was thinking of the brian stack interview on HWYW.  being a giant fan could always be interpreted as pathetic.  the key is to not be nuts.  and not make people who arent fans listen to you naming every trent l strauss movie.

First of all, big thanks to Fredericks for uploading AP Mike's Skype Thing every week.  The biggest thing you need to know is that Tom is trying to make his own studio.  He's going to do this completely solo.  This explains his asking for help with T1 lines a few weeks back.  If you want more details, you'll have to listen to the Fredericks' Mind Thing podcast in the link he provided.

Ya, I listened to a few of the skype things. Mike said Tom had been shopping around podcast/radio providers but got frustrated with the lack of creative control he would have in those settings. Now he is building his own studio to ensure total freedom. Things should be up and running relatively soon.

Not too many details were given but it sounds good to me! I would speculate that it might be some kind of pay-service for listeners? It really baffles my mind that no one would give Tom a platform to do whatever he wants. It would be a big deal for anyone to put him on, I feel. The DIY approach is pretty badass, though. The Best Show for life.

I'm guessing all those shitty podcast networks (and they are all shitty, based on the product I've heard) are run by guys with egos, who don't want Tom coming in and displacing their existing number 1 flagship show (which they host themselves) and then them having no creative input to the now flagship show on their network.

As for radio, I'd bet it comes down to advertisers. The network, will want to have some degree of creative oversight due to the demands of their advertisers and/or they don't understand what's funny either.

So long story short, a paid DIY Best Show is good with me.

Espeically when a station like WFMU is the at the top, The Best Show was a true free form radio show, and the station that has no equals (ok maybe KFJC).  where to go from there?  NPR, and their bounty of fracking and monsanto money? (the best show on npr, coming up after the thistle and shamrock and before hearts of space!)  satellite radio?  we all know what happened to tom the last time he tried that (toilet talk...)

I am sure people can donate equipment to him. Then, he just uploads it iTunes. Even at Earwolf, not all the shows have sponsors. Some shows are sponsored by the listeners. Just so you know, I wanted to interview him for a pretty well-respected site. He said he wants to lay low until The Best Show is back. So, that means that he's working on it. Now, that's a beautiful thing!

It's not the sponsors specifically, but the fact that each show begins with an endorsement and is regularly interrupted by them.

Can you imagine Scharpling unironically saying the words, "we'll get back to that in a minute, but right now I want to tell you guys about Snus."

As a listener I was really spoiled by the WMFU Best Show experience. Even though I grew up in a world where all radio and television came with commercial interruptions, after Best Show, I've become very impatient with podcast endorsements.

I'd put up with a Squarespace or Adam and Eve spot from Tom, though, just because of the spiritual debt I owe him- but I somehow don't see that being in the cards.

I want to make it abundantly clear that this is not a post to gossip. Many of you here legitimately care about Tom and are worried about what happened recently.

This is also stuff that has already been discussed in public. I don't know tom. I don't know people that know tom. The only reason I'm posting this here is because some of you won't know otherwise and might be really concerned.

The good news is that all this stuff has nothing to do with the stuff that truly matters, like health or family, whatever. The bad news is that all of the equipment that was going to be used to bring back the best show has been stolen.

That's the deal. All the progress made has been completely set back. There hasn't been any comments about if this is really the end or what. That's literally all anyone knows.

One last thing. According to tom, this isn't about money. So don't anyone go make a rouge Kickstarter page to get things back on track.
Title: Re: The Return of The Best Show

Here it is in a nutshell.

The house that I was hoping to do The Best Show out of - which has been a completely safe and secure place for ages - was broken into over the weekend. All the equipment I had for the show - which was not everything, but was a lot of stuff - got taken.

I am pretty dispirited right now. Trying to figure out where I'm gonna do the show from. Not sure whether I can trust this location anymore. So yeah, I'm back at square one. It really sucks and I'm mentally and physically exhausted from dealing with all this shitty stupidity.

But I'll be damned if I'm gonna let some shitty thief derail The Best Show. Fuck that. We might be back at square one but we'll just start over.

And this isn't an issue of money right now. So please - PLEASE! - nobody start anything to generate money. It won't make the show come back any faster. It's a question of security and safety and picking up the pieces. And don't worry; there will be plenty of chances to throw your money at Best Show 2014.

Thanks for all the kind words I've gotten. It lets me know that I'm doing the right thing by getting up off the mat and getting this thing back on track and any other cliches I can think of.

Onward and upward --

Tom.

From Tom's facebook:

A call to everyone: if you've got any old Scharpling & Wurster/Best Show items that we might not have - photos, old tapes we might've given you, any sort of oddity or rarity - please let us know. There is a project underway and we want to make it as complete as possible. Details will come soon.
But in the meantime, if you have ANYTHING we might not have or you know anyone who might have stuff we might not have, please shoot an email to bestshow2014email@gmail.com or drop me a line in the comments.
Thanks!

From Jon's facebook:

People! There is a very exciting Scharpling & Wurster project in the works and we are looking for any S&W ephemera you might have (artwork, photos, etc,). We'd love for this to be as complete as possible and we'd appreciate any and all help. You can contact us here or via: bestshow2014email@gmail.com
Thanks!
Tom & Jon

Points for the use of the word ephemera.

It's worse than you think.  I also spelled "Pravda" wrong.  Pravada (sic) sounds like a Prada and state-sponsored publication collaboration.

I know; it was a little presumptious of me. I'm just excited for the Best Show's return. I keep checking his Twitter bio to make sure "Professional chump steamroller preparing to CRUSH YOU ALL IN 2014." hasn't been changed to "Professional chump steamroller preparing to CRUSH YOU ALL IN 2015." That gives me hope: knowing that it will happen sometime this year.

I and I only listened to the last few months of the best show. I can't imagine what it was like for those of you who were listening to it for YEARS.

We are all in the same anxious boat.  I will say this: I have good money on the show being back on before November.  I don't there's a chance that Tom waits until 2015.  If for nothing else, it's not a time where people spend money, having just thrashed their bank accounts with vacations, presents, etc.  He's a smart dude.  I bet he gets in before we realize how much money we have to spend in the holidays.

Also a worthy point to consider: what's this price structure gonna look like?  Per month? Annual? Per show? I seriously hope Tom charges more than Maron. I was seriously subscribed to his podcast for 6 months and I completely forgot about it.  It was that little of a change in my bank account.  It was even set to auto-renew every month.

I know that this has been prematurely observed on this string a couple of times before, but- you guys, I think that Tom's era of 'twitter darkness' may indeed be upon us... It's been 3 days since the last 'tweet', and a hilarious last tweet, to boot. Just sayin' The 'Space Champions' hinting at something related to a holiday released 'Best Show' book type of possibility- are you guys leaking some sort of insider scoop material with all this? It would definitely seem likely, based on Tom's recent call on the FOT boards etc. for Best Show materials and past ephemera, that he is probably workin' on something like that in my opinion...

Looking forward to the Best Show of Tomorrow

I've noticed that he's been really active on Facebook recently.  I think that this is the Dark Period.  We have evidence supporting why there would be anything on his Twitter--which was needed because he said the account would "go dark".  And now we have evidence that he is doing things on other forms of social media that he's not doing on twitter.

If the unfunny and halfwits rule, and if the catchphrase of these gremlins is "POINTS", Tom could still be advancing the darkness of his account by adopting their ways.  Perhaps "darkness" isn't, like, total absence of communication.  Rather, perhaps it's the Dark Ages of Comedy, which is completely fucking embodied by @Midnight.  That's it.  We are in the dark ages and Tom will be our fucking Charlemagne, reuniting the Best Show Empire and trampling underfoot the head  of the snake of snoozey, nap-wave comedy.

Yeah, I had my doubts if "darkness" meant inactivity too. It seemed to cause FOTs to think if Tom didn't tweet for one day that meant it was happening, only to be disappointed when he'd post a tweet. Let's face it, Tom's tweets are pretty amazing, especially when he's calling out bullshit as he sees it.

Alright.  Here's what we've got so far:

1) The last non-POINTS!!!!! tweet was 9/9

2) On 9/8 Tom said that the account would "go dark"

3) In responding to whether we were in the Dark Period, Tom responded POINTS!!!!!!!!

4) The 14th anniversary of the Best Show is on 10/10 (WFMU doesn't have the first two archived)

5) Which is almost exactly a month away from the 9/9 tweet.

So, my guess is that the show comes back the week after 10/10.  I also suppose we'll hear about it at least a week in advance.

Tom Scharpling is a comedian, television writer, producer and radio host. Though perhaps known best as the host of WFMU’s The Best Show, which began in 2000 and aired its final program in December of last year, Scharpling has also directed videos for New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Aimee Mann, Ben Gibbard, Titus Andronicus and Wild Flag. Scharpling, who joins CMJ as one of the most prominent and distinguished figures in modern music commentary, will be placed in conversation with Chris Gethard. Gethard, comedian, actor, writer and host of The Chris Gethard Show will join Tom for what promises to be a memorable collaboration.

No date/time has been announced however CMJ happens October 21-25.

I don't know if Gethard will be involved with the next iteration with the Best Show however we're all itching for more Tom so even if this ISN'T RELATED to TBS, it's good info to know.

We also know that Tom's friend and collaborator Chris Gethard may or may not be ending his public accesss show. We'll be finding out on the 24th. If Geth shows up on MNN, the show continues. If he's not on your NYC TVs or the webstream, TCGS is over.

Gethard tweeted this on 8/14:
Quote
I've spent enough time licking my wounds and I'm now officially out for revenge." - unironic line in an email i just sent to @scharpling

I'm a college student heavily involved with my campus' radio station. We subscribe to CMJ which does an annual festival/conference. One of the events/panels is this:

I will say this much--I think it's impossible that Tom does this without having a Best Show announcement to coincide with the interview OR the Best Show is already back, and it'll be used as a promotional tool.  I have a strong intuition that it's the latter.

Tom hasn't done any podcast/public forum since the Best Show went off the air.  I'm sure he's had more than enough opportunities to help CG promo stuff in recent months.  If it was just a favor to CG, I feel like it would've already happened.  I mean, wouldn't it make more sense, if this was just to promote CG, to do it when the pilot was being filmed?  Or when CG filmed his comedy central special?  And if it was just to keep Tom's name in the public's mind, wouldn't he have just done another episode of the Marc and Tom show?  All pure speculation, but I think it's well-founded.

"At some "POINTS!!!" this account goes dark." Only Tom could make this transition/waiting perio so funny. Everyone (including myself) focused on the darkness part when it was the word point that was the clue. That's genius. So eventually one of these "Points!!!!" will lead to announcements!! Very exciting!

This thread is awesome. I love all the theories and over-analysis of tweets. Anyway, I have a feeling it won't be subscription based, just because of how frustrated Tom gets with having only regular callers.

Apple's iWatch.

I'm now thinking that the announcement will come initially from JW and Tom will respond: "POINTS!" and only those obsessively checking will see it from Tom's end.

Squirrels have low intelligence and they don't know which way to go when cars are coming. I was very sad to hit a squirrel recently. It had already run through my lane, but when I passed it jumped back into my lane and I hit it. Knowing that danger was coming, it might have thought it best to go back the way it came.

I very much look forward to hearing you and Tom banter.  I know that might sound sarcastic online, but it's not.  And that last sentence isn't sarcastic either.  Or that one.

On another note, Scotland votes NO to leave the United Kingdom.  Will let me be the first to vote NO for all of the podtrash and comedy central shows.  I'm declaring allegiance to Best Show 2014.

I really hope there is a way to listen to it as a live call-in show.

I know a lot of podcasters take calls when they are recording, but their audience can't listen to it until after the podcast drops.

One of the things I liked about the Best Show is that listeners could hear Tom talk about a topic and then get the inclination to call in. It made the show more organic, if I'm using that term correctly, which I'm probably not.

I fell in love in the first segment of a 2008 show download
on a mp3 audio recording, sliding over towards a Newbridge road
and listening a little on a long commute - no music block in the middle.
Show was well-aged and unconcerned -
It didn't take much to slip headphones on ear, and let out the chumps
but the beautiful mp3 files where we observed comic feats
have been replaced by two podcast freaks
and a break layer, show shift, and long rest
between me and the show I love best
which is sensible, and more fiscally responsible perhaps -
umpteen FOTSs restrained by hiatus straps.

I don't want to start rumors but...

Would it be implausible for Terre's show to return via the new Best Show or the new Best Show's website?

Terre's hiatus from the CBC started in June, and she said she'd be out for at least five months. So that leaves her return to around November/December. Tom's announcement comes Friday which would leave things perfectly for a BS return around then as well. Not to mention it takes Terre's job of the CBC and monetizes it in a way as well.

Like I said, take this with a grain of salt, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it makes perfect sense to me.

Ditto to this, nrt4.

I remember thinking something along these lines during CBC's penultimate show, the one before the record fair with Tom. (My timeline on that might be jumbled). I think it is reasonable to assume that DJ Terre T is involved in this new chapter and plausible that some form of CBC might resume. At this point, I'm happy not taking too many salt grains with exciting speculations. It makes sense to me as well.

I know there's a few people putting together NB maps, but has anyone taken on the daunting task of a complete NB timeline?  With the return of Twin Peaks, I can't help but wonder what events are supposed to happen in the future or what threats have yet to be fulfilled.

I was grasping at straws down at ol' speculation ranch, when I spotted this page on the earwolf website the other day: http://www.earwolf.com/radio/ (http://www.earwolf.com/radio/)

Earwolf is in the first stages of rolling out Earwolf Radio: a 24/7 stream of fun times, archived treasures, and, eventually, live programming for your listening enjoyment.

I doubt this is it but there is a greater than 0 chance that it might be!

Jake Fogelnest hasn't done a Fogelnest Files for a long time, maybe Tom's going to be on satellite radio by way of Jake's help?  One can only hope for classy Blue Note style pictures of Tom and a Art Bell's Dark Matter & Best Show crossover.

Art Bell doesn't do Dark Matter anymore :(

Because his typical audience didn't have XM and a small amount of his fans actually bought XM because of him. He asked them to stream it for free online but they said no.

Last I heard Art Bell is going to a 24/7 TuneIn internet radio station once his XM contract is actually over.

Tom used to occasionally say a band was "on fire".  Tom is also starting his own web based show.  The name of Glenn Beck's web-based network is The Blaze.  Was Tom planting the seeds to take the reigns from Beck?  The answer seems pretty obvious.

Title: Re: The Return of The Best Show
Post by: The Gentleman Gh0st on October 13, 2014, 04:53:39 PM
That set looks great.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went with a model where they have premium content behind a paywall.  For example you could stream the audio broadcast live for all and release it as a free podcast, but keep the video feed behind a password that we could pay a monthly fee to have access to - perhaps along with additional content.

I've been thinking about this a fair bit - it's easy to go off on flights of fancy and try and speculate about what is and never could be.  I do realize that all of these things take a lot of work to do well so I'm glad to be simply armchair quarterbacking it and will be pleased with whatever comes about.

Never Not Funny has gone with this freemium model and I assume they are doing well enough, and to my mind they don't have the reach of Tom's mighty hand.  Freemium is something I spent a bunch of time looking at as I work(ed) as a game designer for mobile (read: mostly cruddy) games.  It's the best way of generating income if you have premium content and a pre-existing audience.

These models work within existent podcast networks (VPN, feral, earwoof etc), or as an independent stand-alone (Shout Network!).

What's exiting about a Shout Network scenario is the possibility of bringing in some other shows done by preeminent FOTs.  How Was Your Week or The Fogelnest files*, for example.  Maybe a return to Low Times with more of a performance angle.  Terre's show, of course, would fit that perfectly.  But now you need more than just a room with mics and a couple cams, you need proper stage space etc...  This kind of Newbridge Peach Pit After Dark scenario would also be a logistical monster to deal with... on top of whatever web or app based system you'd have to create to manage people's accounts.  No wonder this has taken such time to work on!  And where would this Shout Network actually be based?  LA?  NY?  Bayonne?

Again, I'd be happy to hear Tom read the phone book on a low bandwidth mp3 file so it's all upside here.  Heck, if the new Best Show is a much less involved operation then that leaves more time for Tom to direct stuff, I'd love to see him do a feature length film let alone a million more awesome rock videos.

*Fogelnest Files might have to be retooled if he brought it back and to the Shout Network, as I'm not sure what the earwolf contracts are like.

I hope that Tom will take on Lost On the River: The New Basement Tapes when the show returns.  This one hits on a number of Best Show sore spots. T-Bone Burnett produces; Elvis Costello and members of Mumford and Sons contribute; the songs are based on unseen Dylan lyrics; and the whole thing is an attempt to replicate the Basement Tapes, perhaps the most overrated project in rock history.  It's tailor-made for a third-hour Best Show rant.  It's only missing a Tom Waits vocal.

Love it when Tom takes on things that people like largely because, "as a smart person, I'm supposed to like this, right?"  (Tom Waits, that Dylan I'm Not There movie, etc.) T-Bone Burnett and Elvis Costello are pretty perfect for that category.

Tom said on the new Todd Barry Podcast episode that the Best Show will be back on the air before December ends. There will be advertising - not subscription based.

No paywall. No subscriptions. Advertising based. Brendon McDonald, Marc Maron's producer who lives in NYC is helping Tom out with some things but a lot of it Tom is doing himself.

AND there will probably be some LIVE touring shows. And its still 3 hours. AND I can't wait.
Question: how will he incorporate music like on the old radio show, what with rights, royalties, etc.? Will it be more like the old podcast w/ music absent?

Probably something similar to the WFMU thing where he could play the music on the show but chop that from the podcasts.

But his show will still be live, which means that he would be broadcasting songs, over the internet and on a commercial show with advertisers, etc. I believe he will have to follow the same rights and royalties rules as any other broadcaster. Can't use songs in one's commercial activity without paying the artists. WFMU had those bases covered obviously, but I think this will be a big difference.

Don't get me wrong - I could never listen live in the past, so I've always been a podcast listener. Sometimes I'd get bummed that I didn't get to hear the music, but I was always in it for the Mirth and Mayhem!

Tom was kind enough to call into my college radio show last night. We talked for about 45 minutes about the new Best Show and other stuff. I haven't listened to the Todd Barry episode yet, but he had mostly similar things to say from what you guys are reporting. December, Brendon McDonald, ads. He told me that he had received offers from podcast networks, radio, etc but none of them felt right. I also asked him if there was any plan to have more than The Best Show (like a Best Show network with multiple shows) and he said there is no plan right now, he is busy making The Best Show great.

When I get back from Thanksgiving, I will get the recording and share it with anyone who is interested. It was so damn generous of Tom to call into my dumb show. I am more excited than ever for the return!

I feel like he could get permission from several labels to play their stuff. Merge, Matador, Goner, Burger, are a few that come to mind. Then again music licensing is more complicated than that so we'll see.

Tom was kind enough to call into my college radio show last night...

Cool to see Tom doing this! He might be doing mine soon too!

Yes, this! Forgot to mention these points from the Todd Barry podcast:
that he had a decent offer from public broadcasting, but he was worried about control of his own show;
that he had a decent offer from a podcast network, but they didn't have the infrastructure (studio and ability to allow live callers).

This sounds awesome. I was hoping it would be by subscription, I guess because I wanted a way to pay a few bucks for something I love. When I heard the Todd Barry interview, it all made sense. For the show to be what it is, you need the freeloading weirdos to call in. If it was just folks who paid money because they love the show, we wouldn't get Tom trying to navigate through the anarchy that made the WFMU show so great.

Nice, put it on my work calendar to listen live.

Tom is also going to be on Jon Solomon's show on WPRB, 7-9pm EST Wednesday 12/3/14. He's also taking questions on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/comedyminusone/status/538711308745846785

Jon made a great call towards the end of the previous Best Show, bringing up a bunch of old topics...you could hear that Tom was ready to hang up, but he was being too good, and then he figured out who it was. I just remember Kevin Durant's movie coming up during the call.

Tom called into my radio show today. (https://soundcloud.com/wmul-fm/tom-scharpling-interview-nathan-thomas)I'll admit that this is a pretty edited version of what actually went down. In all the nerves of talking to Tom, I built a delay (I know tom is a 15+ year professional of radio and he wouldn't curse, but station policy says I had to) but I forgot to set it so my speakers would play the non-delayed feed so between his dialogue, and mine, there would be an odd pause. So this isn't "as authentic as it was on air," it's been edited. It's a better listen this way.

While editing it to the pause I realized that Tom caught on at some point and began, I guess you could say filling in blank space. The dude is so friendly. We talked before we went on the air, and he's just so nice, and he helped kind of ease the pre-interview nerves, although you can hear it in my voice, then you can hear me holding in laughter. I hope I can one day be a 'quality caller.'

You know how Tom use to name peoples cats? He named my radio show in the same fashion. TRAMPLED UNDER FOOT WITH NATHAN THOMAS.

Tom said on Todd Barry's podcast that the show will stream live with callers first & also be a podcast. He said callers are one of his most favorite parts of the show and he could not imagine doing it without them.

So people are assuming that the new show will be on Tuesdays again. Has this been announced? And do we know that it will still be weekly?

Personally (and I realize my opinion on this means absolutely nothing), I would like to see a less frequent format, maybe once or twice a month. I found that most Tuesdays I was either unable to listen, or there were distractions in my house that caused me to miss things, so I had to go back and listen to the podcast. With a new show every week it was easy to get way behind with the podcasts. Plus not having the show every week would mean when the show did air, it would be extra special.

i listened to tom on that mike and the girl (?) show yesterday and there was no real news about the return of the show.

i didn't really enjoy the show that much. it was a guy trying to be 'edgy' and a girl laughing at it all. seemed like a podcast version of howard stern. if anyone is on the fence about listening to it i'd say go 'head and skip it. but those extra clicks gotta help tom out a little bit somehow so maybe click it.

I'm about to sit back and listen to some pre-#BestShow2014 Hype!!  Tom was on a WPRB's radio show hosted by Jon Solomon for a 2 hour (!) talk today, which has been archived here: http://keepingscoreathome.com/?p=2467 (http://keepingscoreathome.com/?p=2467)

via Solomon's twitter: https://twitter.com/comedyminusone/status/540351142962929664 (https://twitter.com/comedyminusone/status/540351142962929664)

Loving this so far, because it sounds more like Tom on the Best Show in how he's speaking and his digressions.

Anyone have a nonflash version of this interview?

"The connection to www.keepingscoreathome.com was interrupted."

I've got this error on Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. I guess since other people haven't had problems, it's something on my end. Weird.

Anyways, it was a great interview and I'm glad I listened live. The two hours went by quick.

The Best Show with Tom Scharpling is already the number 10 most popular audio podcast on iTunes, believe it or not (at least in Canada). Sounds like a good place to start!! (See attachment - not sure how to embed)

PS: It is already number 4 in the comedy section.

I've listened to quite a few episodes of the Kreative Kontrol podcast, generally because I like his taste in interview subjects.  I have to say though that I don't like him as an interviewer.  He has a way of asking questions, that sounds slightly insulting or even gossipy, and I don't think that he intends it that way....But it comes across.  For example, when he was asking Tom about the business model for the show, and he was talking about being confused by it after Tom explained it.... It felt slightly disrespectful.  I think don't think he meant any harm by it, but it doesn't present him in the best light.

I felt the same way about his conversations with Duane Denison (or David Wm. Sims) from the Jesus Lizard when book came out.  Denison got very testy during the interview and at one point sort of cut the interview off by telling him that he had "things to do".  Sims started the interview fairly pleasant and happy to talk....by the end was giving very short answers and you could just tell he was tired of the questions.

Again, I'm not saying Mr. Khanna has any malice in his questions.  But in my opinion he walks a tightrope with being disrespectful to his interview subjects and occasionally loses his balance a bit.

Interesting. I've never met Vish but his interview with Joel RL Phelps is fantastic (episode #70) and I thought his question to Tom about "the dissemination of free cultural content" was excellent.

Does the questioning about Chris Gethard's show / the space-time continuum at the end of the conversation fit what you're talking about?

I think Khanna tries to stoke old controversies to get reactions. The Duane Dennison interview was probably the most uncomfortable instance, but I've heard him do this in other interviews as well (for example, asking Albini about Courtney Love). I feel bad for the interviewees since it's usually a pleasant chat up to the point that he does this.

Yeah, I'm not sure what it's about.  I'm not sure it's even on purpose.  I think he's trying to ask some challenging questions and he doesn't let it go when it becomes obvious that it's not a subject that the person enjoys talking about.

Listen to the last 10-15 mins of the Duane Denison interview.  Or the Steve Albini one that Spalding referenced.  It's just clear that it's a line of questioning that is uncomfortable.

And by slightly disrespectful you mean extremely disrespectful?  I wanted to smack that guy through my car stereo.  Here's the difference he couldn't wrap his head around: Tom having a globe spanning audience and him having a low rent podcast heard by 12 people.

Hey guys, I finally got around to uploading my November 25th interview with Tom from my college radio show. It is a little embarrassing for me to hear now - this was my first ever interview (usually just a music show) and I was nervous/giddy to be talking to the man himself. There are many things listening back I wish I had asked but it is what it is, so please be gentle.

Daniel, I think this interview was great in that Tom seemed completely at ease. It was almost like a excerpt of the Best Show, when he talks to a better caller and riffs on things. In these lead-up interviews, I'm not looking so much for inside info on the Best Show, but more just a taste of Tom before the Big Event, and you definitely brought that, so you should be proud of that. I would think anyone not familiar with the Best Show will be intrigued and want to tune into the BS after hearing this. Congratulations on a great interview!

I hope there's not going to be any buffering issues with the first episode, remember during the marathons Tom would have to tell people to listen on their radio if at all possible,  because WFMU couldn't handle all the people that were listening.

It seems like fate that the show is coming back one day shy of a year since it ended.

I would love it if Tom played some of those same songs from the final WFMU show - All Going Out Together, El Goodo, etc. They made us sad last year, but this year they take on a new context.

I am so excited. The Vance poster is amazing and the coloring in the combined poster looks really cool.

Does anyone know if the new Best Show will be downloadable anywhere after it airs?

You can already start subscribing to it in iTunes, and I think the Libsyn RSS feed link was posted earlier in the thread.

Will the show have a music portion when streamed live?  I assume there won't be music in the podcast form.

Tom said on a few podcasts that he was working on the music issue, but I assume it's been cleared up since he played a bunch of songs on the Test Show.

I bet it'll be like the WFMU show/podcast, where music gets chopped out for the podcast. Shame, though; I prefer listening to the podcast on my own time, but love the music. Listening to downloaded full shows with the songs intact over the last year has really turned me onto some good music.

A 2010 episode of The Best Show on WFMU has been declared by Slate to be the 11th best podcast episode of all time

I'm hoping for a call from Stevie Blue, that would be fantastic.

And I know this may be taboo, but I wouldn't mind Louie the Liverpudlian to call in either. While he who must not be named certainly has a screw loose, I always enjoyed Tom screaming at him to "LET ME TALK!!!".

And while we're talking throwbacks, how about a real throwback with the Anti-Hasu kid. Maybe I've just been listening to the older shows too much, but that's just me.

And one more thing... Is there any question that the first JW call is going to be PBR?

I always thought that the reason the music was removed from the podcast had something (legally? financially?) to do with the fact that WFMU is a real radio station and those songs were broadcast over the airwaves and were now/then being "re-broadcast" digitally.   Or maybe it was that the archives are purposefully not *easily* downloadable and that makes some sort of difference?

I guess we'll have this question answered at latest tomorrow.

I may have missed this in one of the recent Tom interviews, but is the show abandoning its "hard-G" rating?

Tom has been quoted as saying that the show won't be pure shore trash filth, but there will be less restraint on the guests and music when it comes to bad language.  I hope Tom plays more uncensored Hip Hop as a result of having no FCC oversight.  I think that using curse words will just be another tool in Tom's belt and if he's dropping an F-bomb there will be hilarious consequences.

It'll be nice to have that restriction lifted from the music, but I've always felt it's funnier to hear mild profanity in a no-profanity environment than excessive profanity in a regularly profane environment (Howard Stern isn't as transgressive when the FCC isn't breathing down his neck).

Same goes with the time restriction. Tom could go all night if he wanted, but I'd rather see three planned-out hours than four loose ones.

The Best Show (independent version) would have to get the same license that other "non-interactive" online radio shows get.  It's set by law, and is higher than what normal radio stations pay.  It's the same as what Pandora pays, basically.  (Pandora is considered "non-interactive", vs. something like Spotify.) This license wouldn't include downloads, which would need a separate license.

Not sure if this has been discussed in the previous 33 pages of this thread, but I feel a bit, say, apprehensive about the interaction with callers. I know the vast majority of WFMU Best Show  listeners would have been rusted on fans, but the confused callers that were berated or embarrassed were a real highlight. That will happen far less with the new version of the show. Is Tom really over the crappy callers? I thought that deep down they were appreciated on the odd occasion.

He said in some interviews that he feel that the idea of "scanning the dial" and calling a show that you were unaware of is a lot less common, and that the wait for the Best Show call queue is upwards of 40 minutes and no one is going to have that patience for something they're unaware of.

Last night was awesome...and I know so many people worked so hard to get it going (and as a first time listener in "real time", I can't share my appreciation enough for how helpful the folks on the chat were with everyone's various technical difficulties, etc).

...but I gotta say-- even with one "WFMU" slip or whatever-- Tom didn't miss...a...beat. You would think there would be some occasional clunkiness or something (a year away, a new studio, weird equipment issues...). But he was totally a creature at home in his environment.

It really backs up all of the times he's said in interviews, "I know I'm good at this, so I should just do this".

So glad it's back.

On Tuesday, I attempted to listen to the show on my mobile device, a 2013 Moto X running Android 4.4.4. The only way I could figure out to listen was through the player in the device's browser (standard issue Chrome 39.0.2171.93). Because it was playing through the device's browser, there was no way for it to continue playing in the background, so in effect I could not use the device for any other purpose as changing apps or even tabs within Chrome stopped the stream. In addition, if the device's screen turned off, the stream stopped.

Am I missing something?

Download the Livestream app. Search for Tom Scharpling; that's the account the episodes originate from. You'll be able to listen live; Livestream runs in the background so you can do other stuff on your phone while you're listening.

Livestream isn't being used anymore. Working on an Android option. Should be in place by the next show or the one after that. Hang tight.

Thanks. Merry Christmas, mod.
Are the Mods still at odds with Rockers?

Have you tried to call in Fredricks? This is your season.

For Android, I installed an app called "RTSP Player" and copied the stream link (rtsp://54.173.32.221:1935/live/myStream) as a "new camera" and it worked.

How are you streaming on TuneIn? Subscribing to the Best Show channel gives me archived episodes, but no live streaming.
