Pretty sure this was in response to Mike's inquiry about the number of phone lines.
[2/18/2014 10:25:45 PM] Tom Scharpling: No idea yet, Mike.
"Criss did not indicate whether he would attend the induction; Frehley said he is unsure whether he’ll be there."I've said it before and I'll say it again, the only why Ace and Peter get anywhere near the stage for the Hall of Fame induction is if they've disguised themelves as (or in Peter's case, is currently working as) waiters at the Hall of Fame ceremony location.
Frehley then went on to say that after the induction he would further be unsure of whether he had been there.
. .the only way Ace and Peter get anywhere near the stage for the Hall of Fame induction is if they've disguised themelves as waiters . .
Since we are wishing on things to happen on the new Best Show:
I wish for a complete (or abridged) reading of "Still Foolin' 'Em" by the master of the dark arts (of racism) Billy Crystal.
Just recently saw that it also has been published as an audiobook.
Maybe there is some material for the sound collages in that.
Let's find "Lamaaahhhr Giddraay" and see if he can dig it. He's probably on the "turlet".Since we are wishing on things to happen on the new Best Show:

Didn't Tom mention on twitter (or something?) that the comments on Mike's skype thing weren't from him (Tom)?

If only Tor weren't banned. He could untangle this mess.
Any of you cats notice that there's a new-old episode that was recently added to the bottom of the iTunes podcast feed for the Best Show? It's the November 25, 2008 episode. Or maybe I'm just a lucky duck and encountered some beneficial glitch!
So...that new Tom tweet has me feeling really great about The Best Show coming back soon. What more does this guy gotta do to prove there is a huge audience for his work? What, a critically-acclaimed show wasn't enough? 13 years running an internationally-listened to radio show wasn't enough? Out of a small, independent radio station? Without the big money backing afforded to the Seacrests of the planet?
Somehow, someone was convinced to produce The Animal, Paul Blart, Mad TV, Brickleberry, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Midnite...the list of comedy dreck goes on for days. And yet something with a PROVEN track record gets shut down? And why? Because it wasn't based off of some podcast? So you're telling me if Tom rents a couple of rooms in someone's building like Scott Aukerman, IFC is good to go? Look, I'm not knocking Comedy Bang Bang. I like it. I listen to it all the time. But it's inferior comedy to the Best Show. And moreover, it should (and is) more difficult to translate that level of improv-based comedy to a TV set than Tom's comedy.
I miss Tuesdays. Life is hard. The Best Show made it a little more tolerable. It was more than just a respite from the ordinary. The show made you think. It exercised comedy muscles in ways that other programs can't, or don't. I guess life isn't always fair.
Never said The Best Show was the only thing I did, it's just something I enjoy a lot. Is this not the Forum to discuss the Best Show? Go read a book. Ha. Okay poster with over 340 posts. It's not like this is my personal blog. It's literally the only place I've ever discussed the Best Show.
And "upset Tom is not working" is not how I phrased anything. I'm annoyed it can't be monetized. Tom can do whatever he wants.
Somehow, someone was convinced to produce The Animal, Paul Blart, Mad TV, Brickleberry, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Midnite...the list of comedy dreck goes on for days. Are you seriously questioning why someone would have produced PAUL BLART: MALL COP? Kevin James was the star of a top-five sitcom at the time. Leno's "Tonight Show" was a license to print money for NBC for two decades. "@Midnight" was initially picked up for a one-month trial, is insanely cheap to produce, and gets huge ratings.

You're kind of all over the place here, son. I've read your post a couple times and can't figure out what you actually want. The Best Show to return to the radio or be a podcast? Tom to have a TV show? So quit being jerks.
Not sure what Vance is up to these days, but I'd be more than happy to do a talkin' Hawkwind podcast with him.
A few weeks old, but it was good to hear Julie Klausner and Jake Fogelnest bemoan the ending of the best show/talk about how its ridiculous that the best show cant find a new home. This was on HOW WAS YOUR WEEK 2/28.

Here's the latest via Tom's facebook...
I just want to do the show again. Is that so hard? Apparently it is. Any and all NYC/NJ based people will access to studios with phone lines/equipment please drop me a line. Serious people only, thanks.

Right, Kormodd?

I could just picture McLuhan listening to The Best Show on eight different types of radio sets, and then explaining how each set provided a listening experience that was radically different from those provided by the others.

#BringBackTheBestShow trended so much world over today. It was so amazing getting to see all the FoTs making these amazing in jokes about the show, showing Tom support. I loved it. It felt like a Tuesday.
TVLand tried to hijack it:
TVLand @tvland 5h
#BringBackTheBestShow Guess everyone heard we're bringing back #ThreesCompany this weekend! Knock on our door Saturday AM for a marathon!
But I responded in defense:
@NotLibValance 3h
@tvland this is @scharpling 's tag, you wad. I'm switching to SHOUT Classix! for reruns of Archie Bunker's place now. #BringBackTheBestShow

I'm not sure what a twitter flurry can do for getting the show back on the air, but it never hurts to show support for something that you like. I'm sure it's a nightmare of hoop jumping getting The Best Show back on the air.
If it says you're already subscribed it most likely means you signed up for the FOT mailing list at some point. If you didn't let me know and I'll figure it out.
Tom.
Did Tom have a change of heart or was it not his idea to end the show in the first place?
Did Tom have a change of heart or was it not his idea to end the show in the first place?
my understanding is that he just wanted to get paid to do the show. WFMU is a listener supported station.
not only do Tom & Jon (and even AP Mike) not get paid for doing the show there, they can't discuss any other projects they are working on. I think Tom is looking for a way to get paid a living wage.

Okay, who in NJ can help me with a T1 line? THE PROCESS BEGINS. #BestShow2014
I want to see the best show come back with Larry Da Perv and Spike playing the roles of Horatio and Marcellus in Hamlet, and Mike playing Bernardo. Tom is the ghost. Philly Boy Roy is the prince.

If you joined us for Frederick's Skype thing, you'd know all about it!
Mike or Tom will read this and they can tell you....or some braver soul than I! All good news though
Someone provide some details, please, otherwise what's the point of this thread (which started with such details!)

Well it's been 2 weeks and no one has provided any details so maybe you can? And don't say I should joined the skype thing because that's not feasible when you live in Europe and have a job.

I'm guessing all those shitty podcast networks (and they are all shitty, based on the product I've heard) are run by guys with egos, who don't want Tom coming in and displacing their existing number 1 flagship show (which they host themselves) and then them having no creative input to the now flagship show on their network.
As for radio, I'd bet it comes down to advertisers. The network, will want to have some degree of creative oversight due to the demands of their advertisers and/or they don't understand what's funny either.
So long story short, a paid DIY Best Show is good with me.

Or you could send it to Massa's....Mike will be able to call him so that he knows to come to Bayonne and pick up the check.Send it to Mike.

I hope Tom comes up with a fundraising idea like the Boat Party thing on MaxFun but his is a hot Coors truck and it only costs $50 all the Coors you can drink and a ride across state lines, from Jersey to Weirdowood.Mike could be peddling around one of those amphibious vehicles, that look like a duck, handing out warm Coors Light.
What about Earwolf?
I do not know what Tom thinks about them, but couldn't they hook Tom up? Jake Fogelnest can influence them and Tom does not have to broadcast from California.
I never used either website, nor do I know about the issues. What are the issues with those websites / sponsors? What about Earwolf?

Tom (and every right-minded person) hates the Stamps.com/sex toy website stuff.
my best guess is that tom does not want to relinquish any ownership portion in the show to another entity which i assume rules out earkitten and dorkist. not sure how much maxfun could do for tom at this point.
I never used either website, nor do I know about the issues. What are the issues with those websites / sponsors? It's not the sponsors specifically, but the fact that each show begins with an endorsement and is regularly interrupted by them.
If I started doing commercials in whatever the future version of the show is, they would be entertaining. Nothing has been settled, but realize that I didn't make five cents off The Best Show for 13 years. If we're gonna do it for real, we're gonna do it for real.
Don't worry, it will be better than ever.
Tom.

Can you imagine Scharpling unironically saying the words, "we'll get back to that in a minute, but right now I want to tell you guys about Snus."
As a listener I was really spoiled by the WMFU Best Show experience. Even though I grew up in a world where all radio and television came with commercial interruptions, after Best Show, I've become very impatient with podcast endorsements.
I'd put up with a Squarespace or Adam and Eve spot from Tom, though, just because of the spiritual debt I owe him- but I somehow don't see that being in the cards.
not sure how much maxfun could do for tom at this point.
I'm pretty sure that garbage talk will be discouraged. I'd actually prefer it that way. With you there, BGZ.
I could adjust to swearing, having no general aversion to it in life, but The Best Show is possibly one of those cases where constraints in that area, rather than having hindered it, have helped shape its tone and humour, inspiring a creativity with language that makes the show funnier.
i feel like my friend is in surgery and no one will tell me anything :(
Is it time to mobilize Scharpling's Army?
I knew nothing could keep Kid Jersey down for the count. :DAmen to that.
From Tom's facebook:
A call to everyone: if you've got any old Scharpling & Wurster/Best Show items that we might not have - photos, old tapes we might've given you, any sort of oddity or rarity - please let us know. There is a project underway and we want to make it as complete as possible. Details will come soon.
But in the meantime, if you have ANYTHING we might not have or you know anyone who might have stuff we might not have, please shoot an email to bestshow2014email@gmail.com or drop me a line in the comments.
Thanks!
From Jon's facebook:
People! There is a very exciting Scharpling & Wurster project in the works and we are looking for any S&W ephemera you might have (artwork, photos, etc,). We'd love for this to be as complete as possible and we'd appreciate any and all help. You can contact us here or via: bestshow2014email@gmail.com
Thanks!
Tom & Jon
Points for the use of the word ephemera.
Oh, I believe we keep score here. I'm trying to think of an analogy here. If the Best Show is the Community Party, FOT.com is printing Pravada.Commonist?
That's all I got. History nerds can only do so much.

The account has been dark for 2+ days now...and its Tuesday. So, maybe no Mike's Skype Thing tonight?
This is what the "send mobile alerts for Tweets" option was created for. What's the word?
The account has been dark for 2+ days now...and its Tuesday.I'd say a Twitter account would have to show no activity for more than 2 days to be considered dark. I'd say at least a week or two.
THE DARKNESS IS IMMINENT. ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL FOLLOW. WILL THEY BE GOOD OR BAD ANNOUNCEMENTS? YOU WILL FIND OUT WHEN THEY ARE ANNOUNCED.

Hmmm... Will the Best Show be back on the air before December 17?Mike thinks so. Or so he told the Skype crew.

I'm fairly certain this is what Tom's day is like--no joke: he wakes up at a decent hour and literally works all day. The midnight twitter seems to be really consistent over the last few weeks.
We are all in the same anxious boat. I will say this: I have good money on the show being back on before November. I don't there's a chance that Tom waits until 2015. If for nothing else, it's not a time where people spend money, having just thrashed their bank accounts with vacations, presents, etc. He's a smart dude. I bet he gets in before we realize how much money we have to spend in the holidays.
I know the holidays aren't a big book-buying time.

The theory that this is the dark time is interesting. Tom hates @Midnight. He has also mentioned that the unfunny half wits will be destroyed upon the Best Show's return. Maybe this is supposed to be what it's like when the anti-Best Show people rule.
A Twitter user asked Tom if we are in "the dark period" that he previously spoke of. His answer was, of course, "Points!!!!"
If the unfunny and halfwits rule, and if the catchphrase of these gremlins is "POINTS", Tom could still be advancing the darkness of his account by adopting their ways. Perhaps "darkness" isn't, like, total absence of communication. Rather, perhaps it's the Dark Ages of Comedy, which is completely fucking embodied by @Midnight. That's it. We are in the dark ages and Tom will be our fucking Charlemagne, reuniting the Best Show Empire and trampling underfoot the head of the snake of snoozey, nap-wave comedy.
A Twitter user asked Tom if we are in "the dark period" that he previously spoke of. His answer was, of course, "Points!!!!"
Alright. Here's what we've got so far:
1) The last non-POINTS!!!!! tweet was 9/9
2) On 9/8 Tom said that the account would "go dark"
3) In responding to whether we were in the Dark Period, Tom responded POINTS!!!!!!!!
4) The 14th anniversary of the Best Show is on 10/10 (WFMU doesn't have the first two archived)
5) Which is almost exactly a month away from the 9/9 tweet.
So, my guess is that the show comes back the week after 10/10. I also suppose we'll hear about it at least a week in advance.

Tom Scharpling In Conversation with Chris Gethard
Tom Scharpling is a comedian, television writer, producer and radio host. Though perhaps known best as the host of WFMU’s The Best Show, which began in 2000 and aired its final program in December of last year, Scharpling has also directed videos for New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Aimee Mann, Ben Gibbard, Titus Andronicus and Wild Flag. Scharpling, who joins CMJ as one of the most prominent and distinguished figures in modern music commentary, will be placed in conversation with Chris Gethard. Gethard, comedian, actor, writer and host of The Chris Gethard Show will join Tom for what promises to be a memorable collaboration.
We also know that Tom's friend and collaborator Chris Gethard may or may not be ending his public accesss show. We'll be finding out on the 24th. If Geth shows up on MNN, the show continues. If he's not on your NYC TVs or the webstream, TCGS is over.
Gethard tweeted this on 8/14:QuoteI've spent enough time licking my wounds and I'm now officially out for revenge." - unironic line in an email i just sent to @scharpling
I'm a college student heavily involved with my campus' radio station. We subscribe to CMJ which does an annual festival/conference. One of the events/panels is this:QuoteTom Scharpling In Conversation with Chris Gethard

I don't know if Gethard will be involved with the next iteration with the Best Show however we're all itching for more Tom so even if this ISN'T RELATED to TBS, it's good info to know.
As of now (can't be sure when, exactly) all of the "POINTS!!!" tweets have been deleted from Tom's account. Hmmm... Darker...
So this is technically off-topic because I don't think it has anything to do with the return of the Best Show, but what is that "I'm Gonna Party ("With The Dumbest Watch In History") tweet references?
With all this talk that Scharpling's account has gone dark, we're all ignoring the real story here: that Gary the Squirrel's account has been dark since August 24. :'(

Squirrels have low intelligence and they don't know which way to go when cars are coming. I was very sad to hit a squirrel recently. It had already run through my lane, but when I passed it jumped back into my lane and I hit it. Knowing that danger was coming, it might have thought it best to go back the way it came.

My understanding is the show will be on Tuesdays and will take calls realtime. That's fantastic news. Now to watch the POINTS!!! and wait patiently for good.....and bad announcements.
It does seem to make sense that the announcement will come on the day of the Best Show anniversary in October. We'll see!
I'm gonna DIE!Sadly, true.
Four nights, twelve hours sleep. This WILL kill me.

Where'd you see that?
I can't stop checking this page. I am beyond excited.

I think our long, national nightmare is almost over.
I would not have used a comma there, but I like it.
Could be that the announcement will be next Friday. Any clues from the Real Estate show? Or a set list from Tom's DJ set?
"imminent"

Supposedly there's an announcement of a new season of Twin Peaks coming next week. Twin Peaks and The Best Show returning in the same week? I can't wait!
Oh, I wanna take this time - and I mean this sincerely - and this comes from me and everyone involved, but I want to thank everybody for supporting this thread.

this just made me think of pete holmes' "just the worst" laugh and garrison keilor's whistle-laden erotica. yuck.

FWIW, Tom made reference on Facebook in a post about Inherent Vice that he will have more to say about the movie in December. Another hint?

Would it be implausible for Terre's show to return via the new Best Show or the new Best Show's website?
Terre's hiatus from the CBC started in June, and she said she'd be out for at least five months. So that leaves her return to around November/December. Tom's announcement comes Friday which would leave things perfectly for a BS return around then as well. Not to mention it takes Terre's job of the CBC and monetizes it in a way as well.
Like I said, take this with a grain of salt, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it makes perfect sense to me.
My 4 year old kid keeps asking when Tom Scharpling is coming back. Wait'll I tell him!!!What are you going to tell him?
i've already begun pawing myself in anticipation

Shades, do you think he'll try to incite racial tension?
Sounds like hes going to have a some kind of similar set up as that Anthony Cumia Show thing, minus the cameras maybe.
Speaking of sound collages, here's a sample piece from the one I'm working on now. Hopefully it gets everyone as pumped up as I am for the new show! This is great!!!

Saw this, and was very glad to see it confirmed that the show will stream live and take calls.
I'm mostly curious as to how Tom plans on monetizing the show. For some reason, I can't picture him reading Adam and Eve dot com ads on the air, but that's the only model I've ever seen for non-subscription podcasts.
It looks like the Best Show's return has been shifted to 2015:

AND there will probably be some LIVE touring shows. And its still 3 hours. AND I can't wait.
Question: how will he incorporate music like on the old radio show, what with rights, royalties, etc.? Will it be more like the old podcast w/ music absent?

Probably something similar to the WFMU thing where he could play the music on the show but chop that from the podcasts.
Tom was kind enough to call into my college radio show last night...
Tom was kind enough to call into my college radio show last night. We talked for about 45 minutes about the new Best Show and other stuff. I haven't listened to the Todd Barry episode yet, but he had mostly similar things to say from what you guys are reporting. December, Brendon McDonald, ads. He told me that he had received offers from podcast networks, radio, etc but none of them felt right. I also asked him if there was any plan to have more than The Best Show (like a Best Show network with multiple shows) and he said there is no plan right now, he is busy making The Best Show great.

When I get back from Thanksgiving, I will get the recording and share it with anyone who is interested. It was so damn generous of Tom to call into my dumb show. I am more excited than ever for the return!
Awesome. I prolly won't be able to listen live, but do you record your shows?
I'm guessing the show isn't on tonight, so is it starting on December 9 or December 16?

No, there are callers, I believe...
The show ended on Dec 18 at midnight. It'd be kind of fitting if it came back almost an entire year later on the 16th.
Personally (and I realize my opinion on this means absolutely nothing), I would like to see a less frequent format, maybe once or twice a month. Plus not having the show every week would mean when the show did air, it would be extra special.

So people are assuming that the new show will be on Tuesdays again. Has this been announced? And do we know that it will still be weekly?

Thanks Omar. Did he also mention what time it would air? Still 9-midnight ET? I seem to remember Tom not being happy when WFMU changed the schedule to 9-12 from 8-11 pm, so maybe he will want to do the new show earlier?
I know, I wasn't happy when they switched to 9 P.M..

Tom said on that same podcast that it will start at 9pm and will go until whenever he feels like finishing. He said he doesn't ever see it going less than three hours, but he's open to shows longer than three hours.

Think I seriously consider Tom's visit to this week's The Chris Gethard Show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onrHBN1cNFc) as his best The Best Show promotional appearance so far.

I've listened to quite a few episodes of the Kreative Kontrol podcast, generally because I like his taste in interview subjects. I have to say though that I don't like him as an interviewer. He has a way of asking questions, that sounds slightly insulting or even gossipy, and I don't think that he intends it that way....But it comes across. For example, when he was asking Tom about the business model for the show, and he was talking about being confused by it after Tom explained it.... It felt slightly disrespectful. I think don't think he meant any harm by it, but it doesn't present him in the best light.
I felt the same way about his conversations with Duane Denison (or David Wm. Sims) from the Jesus Lizard when book came out. Denison got very testy during the interview and at one point sort of cut the interview off by telling him that he had "things to do". Sims started the interview fairly pleasant and happy to talk....by the end was giving very short answers and you could just tell he was tired of the questions.
Again, I'm not saying Mr. Khanna has any malice in his questions. But in my opinion he walks a tightrope with being disrespectful to his interview subjects and occasionally loses his balance a bit.

I think Khanna tries to stoke old controversies to get reactions. The Duane Dennison interview was probably the most uncomfortable instance, but I've heard him do this in other interviews as well (for example, asking Albini about Courtney Love). I feel bad for the interviewees since it's usually a pleasant chat up to the point that he does this.

Interesting. I've never met Vish but his interview with Joel RL Phelps is fantastic (episode #70) and I thought his question to Tom about "the dissemination of free cultural content" was excellent.
Does the questioning about Chris Gethard's show / the space-time continuum at the end of the conversation fit what you're talking about?

Whoever left that review that mentions Jake Fogelnest, thats hilarious.
Daniel, I think this interview was great in that Tom seemed completely at ease. It was almost like a excerpt of the Best Show, when he talks to a better caller and riffs on things. In these lead-up interviews, I'm not looking so much for inside info on the Best Show, but more just a taste of Tom before the Big Event, and you definitely brought that, so you should be proud of that. I would think anyone not familiar with the Best Show will be intrigued and want to tune into the BS after hearing this. Congratulations on a great interview!

Listened to this yesterday and it was really uncomfortable to sit through. Him wanting to get Tom to go "on the record" about not being at the Sleater-Kinney performance was unbelievably awkward and pointless.

Will the show have a music portion when streamed live? I assume there won't be music in the podcast form.

I bet it'll be like the WFMU show/podcast, where music gets chopped out for the podcast. Shame, though; I prefer listening to the podcast on my own time, but love the music. Listening to downloaded full shows with the songs intact over the last year has really turned me onto some good music.
Tom has been quoted as saying that the show won't be pure shore trash filth, but there will be less restraint on the guests and music when it comes to bad language. I hope Tom plays more uncensored Hip Hop as a result of having no FCC oversight. I think that using curse words will just be another tool in Tom's belt and if he's dropping an F-bomb there will be hilarious consequences.

Will the show have a music portion when streamed live? I assume there won't be music in the podcast form.

I always thought that the reason the music was removed from the podcast had something (legally? financially?) to do with the fact that WFMU is a real radio station and those songs were broadcast over the airwaves and were now/then being "re-broadcast" digitally. Or maybe it was that the archives are purposefully not *easily* downloadable and that makes some sort of difference?
I guess we'll have this question answered at latest tomorrow.
I may have missed this in one of the recent Tom interviews, but is the show abandoning its "hard-G" rating?
Not sure if this has been discussed in the previous 33 pages of this thread, but I feel a bit, say, apprehensive about the interaction with callers. I know the vast majority of WFMU Best Show listeners would have been rusted on fans, but the confused callers that were berated or embarrassed were a real highlight. That will happen far less with the new version of the show. Is Tom really over the crappy callers? I thought that deep down they were appreciated on the odd occasion.

Coco is one of my favorites! I thought it was going to be Spike for sure.
Stream keeps dying on me. Anyone else? :'(

I wonder if Spike will call? He refused to call in for the last few WFMU shows, didn't he?

I kept getting some weird page with a cartoon alligator every time I went to Thebestshow.net last night.
So I listened last night but the first half hour was unstable. Is there a sooper-sekrit archive, like wfmu had, that keeps the music intact? I cannot always stay up and I like to re-listen at work on Wednesday but the itunes version has no tunes. :-\
I am so happy the show is back! Life can now go back to normal. It has been a long year without Tom telling me what is and is not worthy of my entertainment dollar.
the itunes version has no tunes. :-\
Tom finally talks on Mike's Skype Thing.
We were just doing our usual Mike Skype thing when Tom Scharpling shows up and talks not texts. Later, he pots us down and ruins the show.

The Best Show probably casts a far wider net, so I'm confident there will be some call-in gems.

Have you tried to call in Fredricks? This is your season.
Livestream isn't being used anymore. Working on an Android option. Should be in place by the next show or the one after that. Hang tight.
Working on TuneIn as well.
