For those of you unfamiliar with the duo, Scharpling and Wurster are essentially the Jerky Boys for the indie-snob sect. A series of elaborate staged calls between Monk writer Tom Scharpling and Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster, New Hope for the Ape-Eared parodies everyone from major-label alternative acts to audiophiles in a way that only discriminating music aficionados can truly appreciate.

Also, it's "set," not "sect."  Great that they're getting the mention, but ew boy indeed.

Also, the only thing TBSOWFMU has in common with the Jerky Boys is that it involves a phone.  Besides the obvious reason, that's a terrible comparison.

Yep, you heard that right. I laughed when I heard that announced.
Didn't stay tuned to hear it though. Especially after they played the entire Saul Steinberg skit on air.

I felt like I was back in 1993. Or whenever that was popular.

I actually turned WFMU off for a while on Saturday because I couldn't stand listening to the head Jerky Boy anymore.  He reminded me of a slightly more irascible (though less mush-mouthed--I'll give him that) Stevie Blue.  I hate that he has seen any success at all.

The Jerky Boys' first CD came out in 1992.  I know because I actually acquired a copy for free from the college radio station where I was volunteering that summer.  I tried to listen to it then but couldn't make it through the whole thing.  Didn't chuck it, because I find it hard to throw CDs and such away.  Ten years later, some young fellow who was visiting saw it, cooed over it, and, much to his joy, went home with it in his pocket.  And I was most pleased finally to get the thing out of my house.

I know that Michael Shelley likes to interview people from the margins of the music industry, which is one of the reasons I listen to his podcast, but a Jerky Boy?  Ew brother.
