It had some cool bits, but overall a letdown.  Crispin Glover was great.

I'm actually a big fan of the Beowulf story, but that movie was a bit of a let down.

I didn't like Jolie one bit. To me, one of the starngest things about that film was that Grendel's Mom struts around in high heels. I know that isn't Jolie's fault, but it still bugged me.

My favorite Beowulf movie? 13th Warrior!

really? I thought her voice acting was very interesting
Shes got a great sound. The sexy imagery I figure was just the cost of them trying to sell the flick.

I wouldn't mind a whole movie of her being a villainess

I thought Grendel's mom was supposed to be a grunting dog-lady.

That's what I thought. I still remember almost retching at the description of her in the poem.
Oh, Hollywood.

Hollywood man
you GOT to sell the thing
I can't hate on that.

I only care about that stuff when it gets in the way of the story and let's be honest is the real story THAT great? Or more notable for historical reasons?

But I always thought that one of the few interesting things about the story was that there was a wretched, abject matriarch behind the monster.  And she was worse than the first monster!

I'd say definitely most notable for historic reasons, which begs the question, why bother basing a movie on it at all?

I think it still works with her as a evil seductress
in fact I like the idea better because of the dissonance of something very appealing with something evil. It seems so simple to portray something evil as repulsive.  Isn't that MORE of a complex and nuanced storytelling device?
