Help creating a podcast
« on: September 13, 2008, 01:10:54 AM »
Hey all you FOTs out there.  Yes, this is the real "H-Man," requesting your help in his time of need.  As you may know, I have a college radio show, and I'd like to try and make it into a podcast.  So, if any of you has any expertise in the area of podcast creation and distribution, please let me know via this thread.  That'd be awesome.  Thank you.

Tape your show radio show and compress it to mp3 format.

Then have someone set you up a web domain and install WordPress. Then install the PodPress plugin. This allows you to attach the mp3s to your posts, with all the proper podcasting specs built right in. People with feedreaders can now subscribe. (All a true podcast really is is a media file wrapped in an RSS/XML feed).

As for iTunes users, go to Apple.com and set up an account and they if they approve your show, they'll give you a chunk of code to put in the sidebar of your blog. This enables easy one-click subscribtion for iTunes users. Even if your account is turned down, people can still subscribe by going to "Advanced->Subscribe to Podcast" and entering your RSS address.

damn.  that sounds feasable, but i'm horrible with technology lingo, except for some of the basics.  i have three previously recorded shows, and i put them on hotlinkfiles.com, and when i put the URLs in the itunes thing, it doesn't work.

iTunes needs an actual feed format (RSS) to detect the mp3s and understand that they are part of a series. All WordPress blogs come with RSS, and the PodPress plugin will do the rest. Have you got a domain, or a friend with any web experience?

I think you can do it for free with Blogger, at least: http://google.about.com/od/googleblogging/ss/podblogger.htm

is your show all talk? if there is any music in it, you'll need to remove the music from the podcast, or get podsafe music. you might already know that, but since you're new to podcasting, i just thought i'd mention it before you had the RIAA breathing down your neck.

damn, that hurts things a bit.  the majority of the show is music, with talking mixed in between.  well, thanks for the help so far.
